Chapter 36 - Checkmate

"Actually, I have something for you." she said, reaching down into her pocket.

I scratched the back of my neck. "For me?"

She pulled out a necklace, holding it up so that the silver pendant sparkled in the lamp light. When I didn't move, she took my hand in hers and laid it in my palm.

Taking a closer look, the pendant had the face of a lion on it.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"I made it."

My head shot up. She... made this for me? Why on earth would she do such a thing? I didn't deserve it. I owed her. Not the other way around.

"When did you have time to do this?" was the only thing I could ask.

She gave me that bashful, beautiful smile of hers. "I've spent a lot of time in my room the last couple days, remember?"

Yes. Thanks to me. Thanks to my lies, you've been trapped in your room, scared to death.

Oh, Y/N... I don't deserve this.

But that sweet look in her eyes made it impossible to give it back. I hung it around my neck.

"It looks good on you," she said. "I'm glad."

I couldn't help but touch the pendant. It was cool. Soothing. And the lion on it gave me some strange feeling of courage that I couldn't describe. It was ridiculous. It was just a plain little necklace. It wasn't anything special.

But then again... it was incredibly special in every way.

"Why did you do this for me?" I asked. I could feel my voice starting to shake.

She shrugged, dropping her eyes to the side and moving her hair behind her ear. "You've always been nice to me. You let me stay in your home and took time to teach me everything you know. You even took poison for me. The least I can do is a silly necklace."

She didn't even realize what she was saying. If she only knew what this gesture actually meant to me.

I couldn't speak for a moment. I couldn't find any words. All I knew was that I wanted to show her how much it meant to me. I wanted to tell her how my feelings had grown for her in such a short time. But if I told her all that, I would have to tell her what I did.

And I'd lose her forever.

I got to one knee, not positive if the next words out of my own mouth would be an apology or a proposal. She shifted in her chair.

"It's not silly." I said, looking up into her eyes. "Not to me. I want you to know that I've been honored to have you as my guest, honored to have you as a friend, and if you decide to marry me... I'll be honored to have you as my wife."

I took her hand in mine and brought it to my lips. The taste was sweeter than I deserved.

Consider this my apology, Y/N...

I couldn't say anything else. The weight in my chest had began to suffocate me. I had to leave.

I got twenty feet down the hallway before I had to make a turn and hide myself from sight. Even in this darkness, I could still see the lion glistening.

I grabbed my knees, trying to breathe. Never once had a woman given me such a personal gift. My own mother wouldn't even acknowledge my birthday.

And yet the woman I had asked Yoongi to get rid of had gone through the trouble of giving me a piece of her heart.

I slid down the wall, clutching my knees.

What have I done?
