Chapter 15: Paddle Surfing and Pranks

"Paddle surfing?" I asked while trying to get the last bit of mayo out of the jar for the sandwiches I was making for everyone.

"Yeah, it looks super fun," Bethany replied from where she was sitting across the counter.

"What happened to real surfing?" I asked.

"You should try something new," she suggested.

"I should train but sure," I replied, finishing another sandwich. Bethany smiled.

After the competition, everyone came over to my house. Ryan and Johnny were watching television on the couch with Sophie while Alana and Brody were whispering to each other on the other couch.

"What up people?" a voice asked walking through the front door. It was Blake. Older brothers were obnoxious most of the time, but compared to the normal older brothers mine were obnoxious all of the time. "I hear that we got a winna in the house!"

"Just don't," I said, my nose scrunched up.

"Little sis you rocked it," Spencer said, rubbing the top of my head and effectively messing up my hair. I glared at him.

"Aw thanks, sis," he said grabbing a sandwich.

"Hey!" I said swatting at his hand but he had already taken it and walked down the hall to his room.

"Your brother's so funny," Bethany said smiling, still looking in the direction he had walked.

"More like annoying," I replied while cutting a tomato. "Now, I have to make one more."

"It's fine. I'm not that hungry," she replied.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah."

I topped off the last sandwich and announced to everyone, "Sandwiches are ready!"

They all swarmed over and put them on their plates then we all headed out onto the deck. The waves looked perfect today and the sun was shining bright and high. It was the perfect setting; I had just moved on in the competition and me and my friends plus Sophie were sitting on my deck eating on a picturesque day with perfect waves rolling in behind us.

~

Paddle surfing was interesting. For starters, it was less work than surfing because we had to stick to the smaller waves in fear of toppling over. I had to admit, it was very relaxing especially after a day of competition. It worked my arm muscles, but I was going to stick to regular surfing. The waves looked so nice farther out but I promised Bethany I would try something new for once.

We paddle surfed for an hour before Sophie complained so much that it drove us all crazy. She went back to Bethany's place, Johnny had to go home for family stuff as did Brody and Alana. Bethany had gone into the house for a snack and was frantically running back to the water.

Ryan and I were both laughing, wondering what that was about while we watched from our boards.

"Maybe she ate one of those spicy peppers my brothers are always putting in our fridge to fool people," I wondered out loud.

The trick had worked on me once and it was horrible. The peppers looked exactly like normal ones except they were 1000 times hotter. I put it in my mouth and spit it out in the first five seconds because my mouth felt like it was going to burn off. To make matters worse, Spencer got it on video and now I had to relive that moment a million times over.

Even though Spencer had gotten some pretty bad things of me on video over the years — the pepper thing, me falling into a mud puddle in front of a cute guy after my shoes were tied together, my awkward hand sunburn on my stomach, me slipping on butter they put on the floor — he got some good stuff too. He had videos of me and all of my friends having fun, me surfing (actually, he got a lot of me surfing), me driving and not crashing, me signing up for the competition, me during my surprise birthday party. I think he even captured some of us down at ANS.

Now that I thought of it, I should watch those videos later. I missed ANS so much and Spencer had all of the videos on our Apple TV so I could chill on the couch and watch.

"Okay, those peppers were super spicy," Ryan defended. "I can usually take spicy foods but that was a one-time thing."

I turned to look over at him. He was sitting up on his board as opposed to me who was laying down on my stomach with my chin resting on my arms. I was confused for a second then I remembered and my face turned into a huge smile.

Ryan had fallen for that trick because I forgot to tell him what my brothers did sometimes and you could tell the peppers by the slight color difference. It didn't kick in for him until 10 seconds after he had eaten the whole thing. Once it did, he chugged a whole pitcher of milk to get the burn out and was running around our house because "his mouth was on fire." The best part was Spencer filmed it and I needed to watch that too.

"Thank you for reminding me, Ryan," I said, smirking. He hit his hand to his forehead, wishing he had kept the comment to himself.

Bethany got back into the water and paddled over to us.

"What happened? Peppers, caterpillars, colored gum — did they put butter on the floor again?" I questioned.

"None of those, but it was really embarrassing."

"What was it?" Ryan and I both asked with excitement.

"I'll tell you later."

"Aw," I replied. "Well, speaking of that, we should prank them while Blake's here. I've been pranked way too many times in my life than one person should ever be pranked."

Both of their eyes lit up.

I rubbed my hands together and said, "I think I've got a plan."

~

I really think my parents pranked people a lot when they were kids because in our family there was a lot of it going on. I used to get pranked at least twice a week when I was younger and my brothers had more free time. It started to slow down once we had friends, sports, and things to do then Blake left so Spencer didn't have his partner in crime.

Pranking worked out pretty well because whenever one of us got mad, we wouldn't fight, we would just prank each other back and everything evened out. This was probably the best and most thought-out prank I had ever pulled, with the help of Ryan and Bethany. I was ready to get my brothers back for the years I had endured.

Bethany was waiting inside while Ryan and I were standing by the front door waiting for Blake and Spencer to come home from surfing. When they pulled up, I was so excited for this to all unfold and on video that Ryan had to calm me down. I didn't want to blow the entire thing or drop the apples I was holding.

"Hey guys, how was surfing?" I asked as they walked up.

"Great," Blake replied.

"Apples! My favorite," Spencer said grabbing one off the plate I was holding. I had planned it perfectly; he loved apples and surfing made you hungry.

"Oreos?" Ryan offered Blake.

"I shouldn't, they're terrible for you." I was starting to frown when Blake said, "Ah what the hell. Give me one."

We tried not to smile as we waited for the realizations to occur. It only took five seconds before they were spitting out the "apple" and "Oreo" into the bushes.

"What was in that?" Blake yelled while spitting out his "Oreo."

"At least you didn't just bite into an onion!" Spencer complained.

Ryan and I couldn't help but grin widely. They looked at us, questioning why we were so pleased. They looked back at each other then Blake reached for an Oreo and Ryan wasn't fast enough to keep it away from him.

He examined it closely and licked it again.

"Gah, it's toothpaste!" he yelled.

Spencer began laughing hysterically while Blake scowled at him, "Move! I need to get some water to wash this down."

Blake opened the door and Spencer kept laughing while he followed. Ryan and I trailed behind them, smiling at each other.

Blake stopped at the doorway and Spencer crashed into him.

"What the hell?" Spencer asked.

"Look."

"Hello boys," Bethany greeted from a kitchen counter stool.

We had filled the entire living room and kitchen with white cups that were facing up so there was nowhere to step and placed red cups spelling "haha."

"What is happening Hannah?" Spencer asked.

I shrugged my shoulders nonchalantly. He still hadn't noticed we were all filming with our phones discreetly placed in our front shirt pockets.

"How the hell are we going to get through this?" Blake asked.

"I have no idea..." Spencer replied running his fingers through his hair.

"Hey, Blake! Here's a coupon for that expensive board shop you've been looking for," I said sweetly, holding it up for him. "You know the coupon you haven't been able to find."

"Seriously?!" Blake said, grabbing it eagerly.

He furrowed his brows in confusion of how he would get through the cups. Blake looked like he thought of an idea. He tried to step on one to get through but instead slipped on one and tumbled over. We all laughed so hard.

He tried to get up but kept falling.

"Screw this," he said. He stayed on the floor and cleared a path through the cups with his arms.

I hadn't realized this coupon to the new board shop was so important. Maybe because he was on a college student budget now. I had found it the other day when I was going through some magazines. I was going to give it to him but realized it was perfect for this situation.

"I don't want to know what this is all about but he cleared them out of my way and I gotta shower," Spencer said walking down the hall.

"Are you kidding me?!" I heard Blake yell from his room.

I ran down the hallway to his room and found him trying to cut the coupon out of the page because he was terrible at tearing. I crossed my arms with a smirk and leaned against the doorway.

"This is not funny Hannah!" Blake said waving the scissors in front of my face that were zip-tied. "Where are the other scissors?"

"You mean these?" I asked, holding up the four other pairs of scissors we had in our house that all had zip ties on them. "And Blake, it is kind of funny."

He looked at me like he was going to explode.

"Hannah!" I heard Spencer yell.

I walked down the hall and saw him come out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist.

"Yes, brother?" I asked innocently.

"Cut the crap."

"What?" Blake asked.

"Just smell me," Spencer said.

"What?" Blake replied, backing away. "No, dude."

"Just do it," Spencer said, shoving his body into Blake.

Blake sniffed and said, "You smell like popcorn mixed with...ew."

"Yeah, she replaced my soap with butter and my deodorant with cream cheese. Not a great mix is it?" Spencer asked ready to explode as well.

They both looked extremely pissed off and I slowly backed away down the hall toward the family room until I bumped into Ryan's chest.

"Hey guys, there's something on your windshield. I think some kid just egged your car," Ryan said.

Both of my brother's eyes widened and they ran out to the driveway. When we got outside there was a nice egg splattered right in the middle of the windshield like Ryan had said.

"Now, who would do such a thing?" I asked appalled.

"Damn kids," Blake said looking at it.

"Well, are you gonna do something about it?" Ryan asked.

"Like what?" Blake asked.

"Use the windshield wiper to get it off."

"Good idea," Blake said, getting in the car and expecting the windshield wipers on to get rid of the egg mess on his car but a nice rainbow of colored clay appeared instead.

"What the...?" Spencer asked blankly as he looked at the car that now had a huge rainbow on the front windshield.

They both turned to look at us. Ryan, Bethany, and I both smiled. At the same time, they put two fingers to their eyes and back at ours before saying, "I'd watch out if I were you."
