Chapter 3: Niter

Due to lack of info on Fallout pre-war Naval and Air Force equipment, I'll be making some creative liberties. Also, if something too lore-breaking occurs, I apologize. But do keep in mind that Bethesda themselves sometimes ruin the lore of Fallout so uh...I guess I'm just being consistent]

Calender Year 1639,
May 12th, 7 a.m.

New Mariposa Naval Base

It has been almost four months since the Enclave Oil Rig has been transported to the new world. Due to the Qua-Toyne leasing some land to the Americans, they were finally able to settle down and build a small Naval base. Pre-fabricated stuff and equipment provided by the Garden of Eden Creation Kit(G.E.C.K.) was somewhat helpful for the construction of some of the buildings, it wasn't the miracle tool most expected it to be. Trade with both the Qua-Toynians and Quilans has given them all the resources they would need. The new dollar system was set up to work as currency for trade. Likewise, it was a good thing that Qua-Toynian is very similar to early modern English, making it understandable to the most if not all American people here in the New World. Quilan, on the other hand, was a completely different beast, it was thanks to the Qua-Toynians that diplomacy and trade was easily conducted.

There was a reason why this particular area was leased to the Americans by the Qua-Toynians: it was an abandoned fishing village, which was also a place of immense bloodshed.

20 years ago, the Lourians had invaded this place. Due to a high non-human population, the village was completely exterminated. Till this day, none of the Qua-Toynians would resettle this place, especially because of the proximity of its location to the Lourian border.

However, the Americans would take whatever they could get, even if they were now settling on what is a dark memory for the Qua-Toynians, they at least have running water and electricity, barracks, and another place to dock their ships. There is a concrete wall surrounding the base(except for the opening to the sea of course). The walls are designed like a Star Fort so overlapping fields of fire could be used. However, the walls aren't nearly as thick as true Star Fortresses and would probably be taken down by any artillery worth their weight.

Within the few months the Americans were there, they did divert some percent of the Enclave Oil Rig's production capacity to produce some consumer goods which were sold to Qua-Toyne and Quilla. These started to slowly improve the quality of life in those two regions. Ironically, it was the ballpoint that was highly popular. They were very popular among those who had to do administrative work. It was far better than ink and quill as it was a self-contained writing device. Torchlights and other things helped as well.

"Amazing things, these Americans have. I wouldn't be surprised if they have actually surpassed the living standards of some superpowers in the past. It's a shame that weapons export is forbidden," remarked a Qua-Toynian government official.

Kingdom of Louria, royal capital Jin Hark, Castle Hark, royal council

"My liege, the preparations for the invasion of Qua-Toyne is complete."

A man in silver armor knelt in front of the king and gave his report. He was a black-bearded man in his thirties and muscled to the point that it was noticeable even through his armor. This was General Patajin.

"We will be facing two nations, could we win?" so asked Hark XXXIV Louria, the 34th King of the Lourian Kingdom.

"One of them used to have walls we couldn't breach at one point, but with our newer weapons, it would be a cakewalk; the other can't even farm on their own land. If Qua-Toyne falls, Quila will starve to death anyway. Besides, they're full of inferior demihumans, they couldn't possibly win." General Patajin chuckled at that last point.

Still, there is something bugging King Hark.

"What about this group of people, the "Americans"?" King Hark asked hus chancellor.

"They're kind of an enclave state, my liege. They barely have 8000 people and they don't have wyverns. However, rumour has it that they have mechanical flying aircraft, beyond that, not a whole lot is known,"

King Hark thinks about it for a while. If the rumours are true, it would be wise to steer clear of them. However, for such a small group to have developed it on their own is clearly nonsense. As a result, King Hark decided to ignore that rumour. Besides, even if the mentions are true, 8000 men should be easy to deal with.

"General, outline your invasion plan."

"Yes sir, as you know, we currently have 80 thousand men in our army. The troops have been trained in our new method of warfare. We possess 700 wyverns throughout the Kingdom. Naval wise, we have a definitive naval advantage over the enemy.

Right beyond the border is the town of Gim. 20 years ago, we avoided the town because of how well fortified the town was. Their centuries-old walls holding strong for a long time. However...I believe our weapons technology have finally rendered their infernal walls useless. With our new weapons, we would easily march into Qua-Toyne.

The king smiled, he remembered when the new Arquebuses were first created by local gunsmiths. Due to being part of the coalition of uncivilised nations that tried to take down Parpaldia many years ago, they weren't really allowed to import Parpaldian magic cannons. However, they did manage to smuggle some black powder through some trade ships and had managed to create some firearms. Their Arquebuses are still very primitive when compared to the Parpaldian counterparts, but they are sufficient against Qua-Toynia and Quila. Even more impressive is the new bombard. With how powerful it is, even Qua-Toynia's best walls couldn't stop it.

"We will first start by using our spies to take down their magic comms lines. If they are taken out, Gim could no longer communicate with the rest of Qua-Toyne, slowing down future reinforcements from coming in. Following that, we will use our larger wyvern force to gain air superiority. With the air cleared of Qua-Toynian wyverns, we would be able to march into Gim with our ground troops without much opposition. Due to them not having faced our newest firearms and tactics, we would definitely be able to do a lot of damage."

"Is that so...hehehe Ahahahahahahahaha, at long last, after seven years of planning, we can finally grow our power further and put and end demihuman scum!"

Cheers rang out. The royal castle became filled with boisterous celebration.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Central Calendar year 1639, May 13th, morning, near the border of Louria and Qua Toyne

Kingdom of Louria, eastern subjugation army command tent

With how long the Lourian military had been drilling near the border, the Qua-Toynians were naturally going to have a fairly large garrison there. And with how loud they were with guns, it is assumed that the Qua-Toynions had brought a lot of cavalry, which is exactly what they want.

B-class General Pandour was leading the advance force of more than twelve thousand to take over Gim. 10000 of which are infantry, 2000 are cavalry. The infantry are divided into 4 Tercos, 2500 men each(1400 in central pike formation, 60 arquebusiers each on both left and right side of the pike formation. Then an additional 245 each in four sleeves which operate semi-independently from the central formations). And all these are not counting the 500 wyvern riders to control the air or the special siege weapons crew.

Pandour smiled widely as he surveyed his troops. Wyverns are expensive, even if Quila and Qua-Toyne were to somehow coordinate to use all their wyverns in one area, they wouldn't even reach half of the numbers brought by Qua-Toyne in this battle alone.

"Will looting be allowed in Gim sir?"

Lieutenant General Adem called out to him. He was a ruthless knight. Rowlia had conquered numerous small countries in its zealous expansion, and the rumors of his exploits in occupied territories were unspeakable. However, those countries were majority human. This one, however, wasn't. Looting will also improve troop morale. The strategic benefits of higher morale is...tempting.

"Usually I would advise against it, but just this once, I'll allow it."

"Understood"

Adem bowed, a smile can be seen on his face.

"Looting in Gim is allowed, do as you like. It's fine if you want to have fun with girls, but don't forget to dispose of them when you're done. Leave no survivors. Communicate this to the rest of the army."

""Yes sir!""

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Gim

Black smoke appeared out in various directions surrounding Gim. General Staal of the Gim garrison had an uneasy feeling and sent out scouts to see the source of the smoke.

All the magical comm lines had been completely destroyed. Due to being at a lower level of technology, their magical comms require such lines in order to communicate with further away regions. With this, Gim is effectively cut off from communicatimg with the rest of Qua-Toyne.

"So...the Lourians strike at last," sighed General Staal. His sweat dripping down his forhead. Indeed, the Qua-Toynian kingdom had prepared for this eventuality, but a coordinated strike like this means that Louria had better comms tech, perhapd imported from Parpaldia. However, now is not the time to ponder about where the enemy got their tech from.

"Send messengers out to warn other towns and villages! Tell them to send reinforcements! Also, I want the wyverns out looking for enemy troops, they can't be too far."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Airspace over Gim

Oknen Phriarsaes looks down, scanning around for any enemy troop formations.

Although he put on a brave face to inspire his wingmen, he is actually terrified of war with Louria. He was a kid when it happened. Although the Lourians avoided the walls of Gim out of fear, news of the massacres terrified him. And 20 years later, he is a grown man, and still as terrified as he was back then.

While consumed by thoughts, he saw it: large troop formations, directly west of the town.

"Oknen to HQ, enemy troops sighted 10km west of Gim,"

Then he saw it: a large formation of flying things, and then he saw something glowing up.

It was a huge formation of enemy wyverns, and it's now too late for Oknen to take evasive maneuvers.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Captain of the Western Knight Order, Moiji felt uneasy, all of their wyverns in Gim were wiped out. Even if most of the enemies were levies with at best weeks or months of training, the lack of air cover means that the enemy could pick off their knights and men-at-arms until they could be taken down by enough peasants.

He knew the battle had to be fast. Lacking air cover is bad enough, the capture of one of the Lourian arquebuses less than a month ago showed how advanced their technology has become. If the cavalry does not pick off their gunners fast enough, their infantry would be completely shredded. He had no idea how many guns the enemy has, but if his cavalry can reach then while they're reloading, they stand a chance.

He thought about his 9000 men. 5000 infantry, 4000 cavalry. The 5000 was a 70/15/15 split between pikemen, archers and swordsmen; the 4000 cavalry was a mix of light and heavy cavalry. Using archers, he could start whittling down enemy troops, pikemen for when the enemy brings out cavalry, and cavalry for taking our their Arquebusiers.

Then he saw it, the enemy marching in formation. It was an odd formation. It was more...detached and divided than what he was execting. No time for worries now, he thought.

Captain Moiji ordered the infantry to slowly advance forward. He knew the guns would have a deadly effect on the infantry, but he needed the fire to be drawn out so his cavalry could mow down the gunners.

Sure enough, a loud thundering volley was heard. He knew that they would be reloading now and ordered immediately charged out his cavalry. However, he didn't notice the first line of gunners retreating back, allowing the second line to march forward. As a result, the second volley came in much faster than he expected.

It was carnage, many of his heavy cavalry were shredded in the headon charge, but the light cavalry, coming from the flanks, should make contact anytime now. That should sweep the sleeves of men away and give them a morale loss.

Then he noted that for the companies on the flanks, the sleeves of men, along with the gunners on the flanks of the pikemen, started retreating into the pike formation, which expanded outward. Despite seeming to act independently, the enemy companies have a lot more cohesion than expected.

He instantly knew what was coming next, due to how dense the pike formations were, the light cavalry didn't have enough momentum to break them.

He was correct, the light cavalry crashed into the pike formation and suffered heavy casualties. Those who managed to maneuver away from the pikes were shot at from some other formations who did not have their gunners retreat into the pike formations, resulting in more casualties.

Then came the wyverns. Fireballs rained down on the remaining infantry, resulting in a mass route from those who are still alive. It was absolutely hopeless.

Captaim Moiji had lost half his men. The enemy lose some men, mostly due to arrows, but they lost far more than he did. Troop morale was dropping badly.

Then the wyverns came in. Fireballs rained down from the sky, killing even more of his men. Hopeless, many of the survivors began to route. Even captain Moiji, one who was trying to hold this army fled with them.

Due to the enemy using their cavalry to run down the survivors, barely a quarter of Moiji's force made it back to Gim. Moiji was not one of them.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"The cavalry unit have finally regrouped with us, sir."

General Pandour was pleased with the outcome, it wasn't even a battle, it was a slaughter. With the troops near Gim shattered, it was not time to be idle, but rather time to bring down Gim.

"Order the troops to continue marching, we will begin sieging today!"

"Yes sir!"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Gim, 1300 hours

"They wiped out three quarters of them?!!"

General Staal was surprised. Even if they had numerical supremacy, they shouldn't have lost that many men in just two hours. He realized what this means.

"Bastards will be marching right towards us."

There was no way troops deployed this close to the town of Gim could just go around it. They would have their supply lines destroyed. As a result, they would definitely be sieging down Gim.

That thought filled him with confidence. The walls of Gim were designed to withstand the heaviest trebuchets man can build. A frontal assault on the walls of Gim was suicidal, and even if wyverns drop bombs, there were enough mages here to put out the fires. The stocks are full enough to withstand a year-long siege, more than enough time for someone to relieve the siege.

In theory, it should be capable of holding out. However, the defeat of the troops earlier on shattered Staal's confidence.

"Check the fortifications! I don't want any weak spots for the enemy to exploit!"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Walls of Gim

On the walls, a random soldier looks over the horizon. Any time now, the enemy might appear over the horizon. Most of the men are on high alert. The soldier looks down at his Handgonne and inspects it. Sure, this thing had short range and all, but the awe-inspiring sound was just...beautiful.

He looked back to the horizon, then he noted many dots in the sky.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Gim

"General! 75 enemy wyverns incoming!"

General Staal looks out of the window. He saw the huge swarm coming in. Expecting them to dive, instead, something small seemed to be dropped from them, and they don't seem like fireballs.

Explosions started appearing across the town. They weren't fireballs at all, they were small bombs.

"Fuck! Townsfolk morale will drop!"

As expected by the Generals, the fires were easily put out by mages, but the damage to morale was already done, people are already panicking. Some people no longer have a roof over their heads tonight...the most pressing concern however is the grain stores.

"Check the stores to see if they're still fine!"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Walls of Gim

The Qua-Toynian soldier on the wall sees the troops coming in, they came within a certain distance to the walls and then stopped

Damn it, just too far to reach with my Handgonne. He thought.

The troops outside the fort started forming a long line. Then saw the muzzle flashes. He ducked for cover.

He was lucky, but his comrades weren't, some heeled over and lay dead.

Shit, they have far more range than me. The soldier thought, he dared not peek out, in case a stray ball hits him.

Then he saw some people wheeling out something from a tower. It looked like a cart from that distance but he knew what it was. He saw the crew light the fuse while trying to stsy behind cover.

He then heard th whoosing sound that indicated the weapon being fired

. . . . . . . . . . . .

Besieging force outside Gim

Lieutenant General Adem flinched, seeing the weird weapon just wheeled in firing. And then, the arquebusiers around him starting falling, pierced by some arrows with what seems like black powder rockets attached to it.

"Fall back! Assaulting like this would be suicide!" He ordered.

The Lourian troops withdrew further from the walls, instead of scaling the walls, they would wait for the new siege weapons to arrive. Adem silently vowed to treat the people of this settlement as badly as he could.

The number of Lourian Arquebusiers killed wasn't too bad as of yet, but Louria would not to launch any more assaults on the walls of Gim for another two days.
