LI. Goodbye

So many are dead. Blood soaks the ground, bodies lay twisted at all angles, the gruesome aftermath of a battlefield. The images are horrible, but what I see next beats them all. I cover my mouth in a gasp, shock freezing me in my place.

"Sky?....Oh shuck." Minho says, when he catches my line of sight.

Laying in the middle of the path, blood soaking through the center of her shirt, is Kate. My heart breaks for Clint, who sits with her head in his lap, sobbing uncontrollably. I snap out of my daze and rush to her side, kneeling in the blood pooling beside her. "I never told you this, but I love you, I always did." Clint sobs brushing her hair away from her face.

"I loved you too." She croaks, coughing violently as she struggles to breathe, blood gurgles from a large hole in her stomach. She doesn't have much time.

"Kate, Kate I'm here." I whisper, ignoring Clint's sobs.

"Sky?" She asks, her voice cracking as she attempts to speak.

"Ya it's me, I'm here." I whisper, choking back my own sobs.

"Sky you made it." She whispers, relief filling her voice. "I'm..so..glad." She coughs out. I'm sickened that she's happy for me, when she lays dying on the ground. I can already see the light fading from her eyes.

"No Kate please." I beg, squeezing her hand tightly, willing her to be alright.

"It's ok Sky, you'll be fine." She whispers. I feel awful, here Kate is dying, and she's trying to comfort me.

"No I won't, not with out you." I whisper, tears starting to fall over my cheeks. "Kate you've got to be ok." She coughs again and her eyes behind to close. "No, no, no" I whisper softly, bending down closer to her. She opens her eyes again, looking straight into mine.

"Skylar, get them out and keep them safe." She says, her voice grasping one last bit of strength. "Promise me."

"I ca-"

"Promise me!" She yells, sending her into a fit of coughing.

"I promise!" I say back, tears now freely running down my cheeks. "I promise."

"Good." She smiles, and then closes her eyes, her hand going limp in mine.

"NO!" I scream clenching my fists in rage, "NO! Do something?!" I yell at Clint. "No, no." I say again, my voice softening.

"Sky, he can't, she's gone." Minho whispers, kneeling beside me.

"She can't be." I whisper, wrapping my fingers around her wrist. There is no pulse. "No." I whisper again, trying to wrap my mind around what just happened.

"WHY!!" I scream, my voice echoing off the stone walls, and eerie sound in the deadly silence. "Why?"'

"Sky, we've got to go." Minho says, pulling me to my feet. I try to wiggle out of his grasp, to go back to her, but I can't, the fighting has left me exhausted and he is too strong.

"But....but..but." I stammer, reaching down towards her.

"I know, but Skylar we have to go, Kate would want you to." Minho says softly, pulling me towards the edge. Thinking of Kate's last words, I sniff and quit fighting, letting him carry me towards the hole. I notice a few others trying to drag Clint away, but he refuses. I don't even have the energy to persuade him to come. I hope the others can convince him. As bad as I want to stay with her, I will not waste Kate's death. She died for a reason, and I will not let her die in vain.

"We have to jump." Minho says setting me down.  I nod silently and stand beside him. "You first." He tells me, not taking the chance that I'll turn around. Shaking, I take one long look back, seeing the carnage they lays lifelessly around me, and I think back to every memory held within these walls, they are all I know. I remember nothing before them. Everything I remember  has been inside these walls, they are familiar, they are home, they are where my friends and I worked, where we played, and laughed, where we lived. Where we replaced our forgotten memories with new ones. Not anymore. I tell myself. This is not home anymore. With one last look, I let it all go, Goodbye Glade.....Goodbye Maze.....Goodbye Kate......and then I jump.

I fall through the opening hitting the ground hard. I scramble quickly out of the way, just in time to avoid being crushed by Minho, who jumped in after me. Already my head is starting to spin, I must've hit it when I fell, or perhaps it's the massive amounts of blood seeming to leak from every inch of my body. Who knows?

Soon Minho is followed by two other boys, the two who had been trying to get Clint.

"Clint?" I ask them tiredly. The shake their heads sadly, keeping their eyes aimed at the floor. "Shouldn't we force him to come?"

"I wouldn't want to be." Minho says quietly, keeping one hand against my back to steady me. Kate and Clint had never even technically been together, and I can't imagine what it would have been like if Minho or I had died. I shiver, chills running down my spine. My skin is cold and sweaty. Maybe I'm already dead.

"He threatened to kill himself if we tried." One of the boys whispers. "Said he wasn't leaving her."

Horrified by it all, I walk to the side of the room, bending over before throwing up in the corner. Then I collapse in a heap on the floor, my body shaking violently.

"Sky?" Minho says, rushing over to my side, but his voice is muffled, like I'm trapped underwater. "Sky?" I feel him pick me up, and carry me back to the group, laying me on the floor in front of him. I'm starting to think I'm going into shock.

"Hey are you ok?" He asks, kneeling beside me and trying to figure if there's a real problem or if I'm just upset.

"I'm c..c...c...cold." I manage to get out through the chattering of my teeth. "Think...I'm..going..into..shock." I whisper.

"Shuck it." Minho says, reaching around in his backpack till he finds what he's looking for. He wraps his jacket around me, then pulls me back into his lap, trying to warm me up. I shiver again as my head starts to drift to the side, my eye lids drooping heavily. "No, you need to stay awake." He tells me, starting to wrap a bandage around the most serious of my wounds.
I open my eyes again, picking my head up straight before letting it loll to the side again. "So tired." I reply starting to close my eyes.

"Skylar, I said stay awake, now do it." He commands, but his voice is shaky. Sighing I pick my head back up, but it feels heavy and numb, like someone stuffed my head with cotton balls made of lead. For what feels like hours, I fight desperately to stay awake,only vaguely hearing people talk, shadows shifting around the room. More bandages being applied. Slowly I begin to warm up, the drowsy feeling receding from my mind until I can think almost clearly. I open my eyes all the way, and look up at Minho, I know we need to get moving.

"Feeling better." I cough weakly, starting to stand up. Minho doesn't look like he believes me, but stands up anyways, keeping his hands around my waist in case I decide to collapse again. We don't have time to lose, and he knows that.

"I'll say it, there's thirty of us, that means we lost twenty-two." Newt says, after performing a head count. He stands near the computer, Thomas and Teresa at his sides. I almost puke again, we lost twenty-two? Too many, way too many.

"Almost half of us died." Thomas says, shaking his head in disbelief.

"Ya but half of us shucking lived."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Said goodbye, turned around
and you were gone, gone, gone
Faded into the setting sun,
Slipped away
But I'll see you again, woah, woah
This is not where it ends
I will carry, you with me
Oh, till I see you again
