Chapter 5

As Jessica drives, Spencer stares silently out the window for quite some time just looking at the scenery. He remembers the last trip he took like this to visit his sister. Of course that trip was under quite different circumstances, his mom hadn't just kicked him out, in fact, it was his mom who had been driving him out to see his sister for the summer. He remembers it like it was yesterday:

"How long am I able to stay out with Jess?" Spencers questions his mom trying to cut some of the silence to not make to trip so boring.

"I was thinking all summer if you wanted. Give you two some time together as you two used to be so close and I know how much you miss her." His mom replies while keeping her eyes on the road.

"Really? Thanks mom! You know, maybe I could move in with her? Ya know. Since we miss each other so much."

"Fat chance at that happening Abigail. You'll get too used to her treating you the wrong way then get hurt coming back home."

"You mean treating me the way I should be treated? As her brother because she actually accepts me."

"No I mean what I said, now not another word about you living there or i'll turn this car around right now!" Tina, Spencer's mom snaps.

"What are you thinking about over there?" Jessica questions, pulling Spencer from his memory of the last trip he took to see his sister.

"Nothing really, just thinking about the last time I came out here and then what happened today."

"Yeah I could imagine. Want to talk about it? It might make you feel better"

"Yeah I suppose it might." Spencer says.

"Well start talking." Jessica says with a slight chuckle.

"I'm just not quite sure where to begin."

"Well how about you start with tonight, it might be easiest"

"Yeah maybe. I just don't know how a mother could throw their own child to the curb and not think twice. I mean I get that she didn't accept what I was doing but at the same time I am her child. She didn't even show any remorse for what she just did, I saw her before I left, not even a tear or a hint of sadness anywhere on her body."

"Well Spencer, I can't speak for her but I just have to think there was some sadness somewhere, I mean, come on, you were the last kid at home after I moved out. She couldn't have wanted you to leave. I don't understand why she did it either, but she did and we have to look beyond that now. Look to the fact that you will never have to go back there, never have to be treated like that again."

"Yeah I guess so. I mean i'm not sad she kicked me out, i'm rather relieved because now I know my depression will get better because I won't have to live in a house where no one can stand me. Now I get to live somewhere with someone who truly loves me for me."

"See there you go, look for the positive."

"I've been trying, and honestly sis, the thought of moving in with you was what kept me going. Without that thought i'm sure I would be a lot worse off."

"Well we can put all the bad memories in the past now. Just look forward to being loved and cared for by me."

"Thank you sissy, I couldn't have asked for a better sister"

"Aww thank you Spencer. Did you still want to go to Wal-Mart tonight? If not we don't have to we can go another day."

"No, we can go. Maybe it will clear my mind the rest of the way" Spencer says as he looks up to see they are already at Walmart. "Wow I didn't think we had been driving for that long yet."

"It's amazing how fast time will fly when you're talking."

"Also how fast time will fly when you're just thinking looking out a car window."

"Yeah, you're right" Jessica answers pulling the car into a parking spot and placing it in park. "Ready?" she questions turning the car off.

"Yeah let's go" Spencer replies unlatching his seatbelt and opening his door, before stepping out.

The moment they step out of the car they can smell the grease from the fast food restaurant in the parking lot of Walmart. The Walmart here is a lot bigger than the one back home. As they begin to walk into the store Spencer mentally goes over the items he needs in his head. Toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, and a pack of socks because I forgot most of my socks.

"Okay Spence, what did you need?"

"I just needed some basic things like a toothbrush and such because I totally forgot them trying to get out of the house so quickly."

"Alright why don't you go look for your things and pick a few new outfits out and i'll go get what I need and then we can meet back up. Sound good?"

"You don't need to buy me clothes, I can look for a job and buy my own when I have the money."

"No I insist. Now I want you to go and pick out at least four outfits. Got it?"

"Fine if you insist." Spencer says heading off towards the pharmacy area of the store for his bathroom things he needed.

Spencer grabs the needed items from the pharmacy area of the store and puts them in the cart then starts to head off to the clothing section. As he arrives at the clothing section of the store he see something he's always wanted, boxers, he'd always been too scared to buy them living with his parents. He walks over to them and looks at the probably how an old person looks at technology, confused. He grabs a few different types in what he thinks is his size and throws them in his cart. Next, he walks down the same aslie and sees socks so he grabs just a random package of socks. The next thing he looks at are the pajama pants. He's never had a pair of mens pajama pants so he picks two out, one that has a lot of Nickelodeon characters on them and one that is Harry Potter themed. He tosses them into the cart then walks over to the pants. He selects a pair of black jeans, a pair of tan carpenter style pants, and a pair of normal blue jeans. Finally, he walks over to the shirts and picks out a Nirvana tee, a Panic at The Disco tee, a button down shirt and a plaid shirt. Once he places those in the cart he sees his sister walking towards him.

"Sorry, if I got too carried away I can put some things back." He says now realizing just how much is in his cart.

"No, no it's okay I know you didn't have this opportunity at home and I wanted you to go nuts and let me spoil you."

"Jess?" He questions nervously.

"Yes Spencer?"

"Would it be okay if I got a new pair of shoes. One, i've never owned a pair of mens shoes and two, my Vans are getting pretty worn down."

"Yes, go ahead. You may select two pairs."

"Oh my gosh thank you so much" He says practically running over to the shoe section. Once there he selects a pair of shoes that look similar to his Vans and also a pair of dress shoes. "Okay, I'm ready to go" he says walking back to Jessica.

They walk to the checkout and load the items on the belt and the woman scans each item and then tells them their total.

"That will be $394.16 please" the cashier says making Spencers jaw almost hit the floor.

"That will be debit please" Jessica says before smiling back at Spencer mouthing 'It's okay.'

The pair leave Walmart and make the short drive to Spencer's new home.
