Trunk

A young girl just finished with a long day of classes and studying in the library at her university sits on her bed, typing up her homework on her laptop. Her hair sits on top of her head in a messy bun to keep it out of her face

The room to her door opens. She assumes it is her roommate coming home from her day of classes as well but looks up just to make sure. She does a double take and realizes that the person entering her dorm is not who she expected it to be.

"Jason?"She asks. "What are you doing here?" She looks at the time on her laptop.

9:38pm

Her boyfriend never comes over this late in the evening. He is usually doing his homework at this hour as well. They are both very concerned about their studies.

She can see the beads of sweat rolling down his forehead. He is worried about something.

She sets the laptop on the bed beside her and leans forward off the wall. "I need you to get in the car." He says, standing stiff in the doorway.

"Jas, I cant go out tonight. I have too much homew-" She stops here setnence as Jason pulls out a gun fron the pocket of his hoodie.

"I said, get in the goddamned car." His hand shakes around the gun.

Without hesitation, Ella stands and exits her dorm room, not even looking at her boyfriend as she passes by him.

She walks down the flight of stairs and out the front door. He follows closely behind her.

She walks towards his car. It's the rusty old one right in the front of the lot. He parked it as close as he could.

She places her hand on the passenger side door, waiting for him to come over and unlock it so she can get in.

Instead, he sticks the key in the trunk and pops it open. "Not there." He says, motioning her to get in the trunk.

Ella walks around to the trunk of the car. She takes note of the rope and duct tape in there. She looks at Jason, pleading with her eyes for him to not do what she thinks he is doing.

"Jason please." She whispers, her voice cracking as she fights back tears. She can't believe this is happening to her right now.

"I'm sorry El, I have no choice. Either you get in yourself or I'll have to force you." He taps the gun against her arm, reminding her that he still has it.

Ella places her hands on the bumper of the car and crawls in the trunk, finally succumbing to her emotions and breaking down in tears. She curls up in the trunk and shakes with fear as he bends down inside. He plants a soft kiss on her cheek and slams the trunk shut, leaving her in there to cry.

The car begins to move. Slowly at first then speeding up rapidly enough to slam Ella's body against the wall of the trunk. This causes her to cry even harder and louder.

She has absolutely no idea what is going on right now. Jason has these outbursts every once and a while. Ella has always been able to handle him when he is like this. She isn't sure if she is going to be able to do it this time. Something else is at play here: the gun.

This terrifies her even more. She knows she can talk Jason out of whatever this is but she doesn't know how she is going to control the gun he has.

Before too much time has passed, Jason parks the car and opens the trunk. Moonlight spills into the car and Ella shields her face.

He helps her out and guides her to a drop-off.

"You are going to throw me off?" She asks, digging her heels in the clay-like dirt. "Jason don't do this, please." She begs him as he continues to push her to the edge. She fights him as best as she can.

"I have to Ella. They are going to kill my family if I don't." Jason cries as he continues trying to get her closer to the edge.

"You can fight this Jason. They can't touch your family. They aren't real." Ella tries to get Jason to understand. "Please, just take your medication. Please!" She shouts as she slips and falls even closer to the edge. She quickly stands up and faces Jason. "You are stronger than them and you know it. I know it too."

She grabs onto Jason's arms. She wants to make sure he can not use the gun. But she also wants to make sure that he can hear her when she is speaking. She needs him to know that he is not alone. He has never been alone and he never will be.

Jason's rage returns and he shoves Ella backwards, close enough to the edge that with one more push, she will be falling. "I've always loved you but they don't." Jason holds her just barely on the ledge.

In a last effort to save her life, Ella quickly turns her body around, whipping Jason into the spot she was just standing. He stumbles backwards, falling off the edge of the cliff. Ella screams and runs to the edge to catch him.

She never meant to make him fall off.

Below, Jason lays on the ground. The fall is too high for anyone to possibly survive. Ella has no doubt that she has just killed her boyfriend.
