Prologue

The hum of machinery filled the empty laboratory. A single woman sat in an otherwise empty room, the computer screen in front of her providing more illumination than the flickering lights overhead. She pulled out two containers and placed them into one of the machines. After some clicks and whirs, a third, smaller container, maybe the diameter of one's smallest finger, pops out. The woman gently takes it and places it in an opening in yet another machine, which after some more mechanical humming, lets out a sort of ding, and a screen near the control panel reads "FERTILIZED." She smiles and takes the small capsule as it emerges from the machine. She pulls out an empty container that may have once held wireless earbuds and slips the capsule inside. She drops the container into her purse, turns off the machines, shuts off the old lightbulb, and locks the door behind her, making her way out of the facility and into the warm June night.

- .... . / ..-. .. .-. ... -

The woman briskly walks through the door to a somewhat-large house, and immediately makes for the basement. Upon descending the stairs, she sees the large test-tube-like machine, with a few other machines around it. She opens the earbud-container and places the capsule into an opening. After a few moments, a small hatch closes, and the glass tube begins to fill with a clear liquid, too thick to be water. The woman gives a smile, but the joy that should have come with it was absent from her eyes. She turns, and returns above ground, before heading to bed. In the basement, the machine continued to hum its monotone song, and would continue to do so for the next year.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER: SIX

It has proven too difficult to create life from scratch on my own. I have tried using one of my own eggs and a modified human sperm cell to create a subject more organically, however, only time will tell if I have succeeded with this method.

The incubation period will take one year. If this fails, it will be a major setback. If it succeeds, this could lead to a massive scientific breakthrough. If it succeeds, humanity will have the power to engineer life itself, and be able to both revive extinct species, and create new ones. We are at the dawn of a new age, if this experiment proves beneficial. But for now, all we can do is hope, and take the gamble fate has offered us.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER: SIX

The creature seems to be developing smoothly. Using a human embryo as reference, it seems to be a male. There are several small bumps along its back, either side of the spinal column. One of its eyes seems to be smaller than the other, which will surely cause problems later on.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER: SIX

Tomorrow is the day I remove Experiment Six from suspension. Tomorrow is the day I will see if my efforts have come to fruition. The creature now resembles a three-month old human infant. Perhaps I have finally succeeded.
