Twenty - Two

To be in love, what does it truly mean to be in love. Scott always thought he knew the full extent of love but he didn't. There was no doubt he had loved persons before but with Elijah it was different. Everything was different. From the touches to the kisses and the loved fill words said to each other. They all made him overflow with emotions, made him yearn for Elijah every second they're apart.

To think Scott would be able to love again, even to this extent. He chuckled to himself at the thought that Maddie pulling her invisible cupids arrow might've worked. It was foolish but there was no explanation as to why Scott felt undeniable in love with Elijah. Truthfully, he didn't need a reason. He loved Elijah and that's all he needed to know. He loved Elijah's smile, the way he wore his glasses, how cute he was when he got nervous around Scott and even the way he ate his ice cream-- eating around the edges and leaving the middle intact-- it was cute. Scott loved everything about Elijah, even the little things.

In the moment he wanted to feel his embrace. The way he held him in his arms yesterday. Promising Scott he would love and protect him. There was no reason for him not to believe Elijah. He was betrayed in the past before but what's love without risk? And he trusted Elijah and he loves him. Scott felt like a load had been lifted off his shoulders when he spoke of the incident for the first time. As if he wings were grown back, allowing him freedom and the will to love again. Like the words had hold back his ability to evolved into something more than himself. Elijah, he was grateful for him. With every gentle kiss and touch, wiping away his pain filled tears and assuring him. With every moment he spent with Elijah he healed his wounds and helped him find his broken pieces.

Love does wonders. Scott was glad he came home. No, he was glad Elijah did give up years ago. To love someone for years on end, Scott had never experienced anything like that. Unrequited, just the thought made him ache at how he allowed Elijah to go through so many years of pain. Love is never easy, but it's those difficulties that makes it worth the while. Scott got up from his bed and headed for the door. As much as he would love to lounge on his bed and have endless conversations with Elijah. He had to be downstairs and he had to have an important conversation Maddie.

Mikey said if he needed answers he had to ask his younger sister. It was the first thing he attempted but that didn't end well. There was so much Scott didn't know. About Mikey, about his own sister he's known for years and he was still learning about Elijah. Scott thought about how he would talk with Maddie as he descended the stairs. They were all in the living room as usual. Gianna nested in David's arm and Maddie playing with Simon.

They all looked up at him when he entered the room after grabbing an apple from the kitchen. He sat beside Maddie, playing with Simon who stretched after his apple. As much as Maddie wanted to ignore her older brother there was so much she could actually do. They news was being watched and for once the were talking about something other than someone dying. That didn't make it all go away, it was still there. The evil force waiting for reckon.

"Whose that?" Scott asked, taking a bite of his apple and looking at the familiar news anchor. Its been pulling at him that he knew her but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

"Hannah" his mother said. "That one girl who you stuck gum in her hair back in middle school"

Scott stared long and hard at her. How could he not recognize Hannah Sawyer? Her brown hair was much taller. She had cut it after Scott made a nasty mess of her hair with gum. Hannah had maintained that look throughout highschool. Scott thought it was because of her change in surname. She was no longer a Sawyer but Grayson. Her wedding ring in view.

Scott complimented how beautiful she had become. He wasn't going to lie when he thought that he hadn't expect for her to already be married. It made Scott wonder wonder about marriage. Was he up for it? If Elijah proposed to him would he say yes? Forget the question a together, he was moving to fast. They just started dating.

"Scott" his father called. Coming back to reality, Scott saw everyone looking at him. "Is everything okay? I mean you're in a really good mood and that's great but--"

"I'm fine dad" Scott chuckled, finishing off the red treat.

"You look more than fine to me" Gianna smiled at her son, crossing her arms and raising a curious brow. "Did something happen?"

A lot had happened. He'd met up with Mikey, he poured his heart out to Elijah and they formed a new relationship. Over the span of a day, Scott life had changed extremely. "Well" he said sheepishly, fiddling with his thumbs. Blushing just thinking about Elijah. "Me and Elijah we started ummm...dating"

Gianna jumped from her seat, clasping her hands over her smile. Scott had said it, he said that they were dating and it made it even more real. It felt good when he said the words, made him feel even more elated to know that Elijah was all his.

"Mom have you seen Simon's bottle" Maddie said, looking around as Simon was about to cry.

"Hold on honey" Gianna said, trying to contain her excitement she got from Scott's words. "When did this happen"

"Yesterday"

Gianna turned to her husband and said, "did you hear that?" David was just as excited and equally shocked as his wife.

"Mom--"

"I knew that Elijah guy was the right one" David pointed at Scott as if to prove himself right. "You should invite him over for dinner"

"That would be great" Gianna chirped, settling herself back in the sofa.

Before Scott decide on replying to his excited parents. He noticed Maddie walking out the room with a crying Simon and heading up the stairs. He ran a hand through his hair. He came to talk about Maddie but it ended up being about him again. Scott excused himself and ran up the stairs two at a time. Maddie had already made it to her room, the door closing before Scott could make it. He knew she was upset and he didn't meant for that to happen. Scott knocked on her door a few times but he only got a series of sounded movements from behind the door and Simon crying.

"Maddie" Scott knocked a few more times again.

"Go away" Maddie shouted from the other side. Scott could hear the breaking in her voice. She was on the verge of crying.

"Maddie please let me in" Scott pleaded, knocking continuously on the door. "I need to talk to you"

The door flung open suddenly, making Scott stumble backwards. "Please go away" Maddie said, her voice was low as she wiped away a tear, Simon's bottle in her hand.

Simon erupted into another series of crying. Maddie slipped back inside and went to her son. Scott took the opportunity to slip his way inside, closing the door behind him. His younger sister cradling her son in her arms, feeding him as she tried to hold back her tears. Scott had never seen his sister broken to such a point. She was always cheerful, making silly jokes and being Scott's wing woman. She hid behind all of that, hiding her own problems and catering to Scott's.

He failed to notice-- they all failed to notice. Gianna, David and Scott didn't see the mask she wore crumbling to pieces. But Scott was going to make it right. He wasn't going to let his younger sister shoulder all her burdens by herself. She didn't allow Scott to do that even when she had her own weight to carry. Scott waited until she was finished feeding his nephew, burping him and placing him in his crib when he eventually fell asleep.

Maddie sat on her bed, burying her head in her hands. Scott sat beside her, rubbing his hand in comforting circles in her back. "Maddie you know you can always talk to me"

"There's nothing to talk about" Maddie sniffles, forcing a laugh after. "I'm just moody, girls get like that when they're--"

"No more excuses" Scott cut her off. He's already seen it all. There was no more point in her making excuses anymore. Scott wasn't going to leave her just like that. Even if she didn't say anything now there was always tomorrow and the next day. He was going to make sure his sister was okay.
"Is it difficult for you to tell me?" Scott hid the hurt that followed those words. They were the Finnegan siblings, they shared everything, did everything together. Twins some would say.

"Don't do this Scott"

"We tell each other everything" he continued.

Maddie stood before Scott tears flowing down her cheeks. She tried wiping them away but they kept flowing uncontrollable. "No we don't. We're not kids anymore Scott we don't tell each other anything" she said between sobs. "I'm always the one listening, being the cheerful little sister but what about me?"

Scott didn't know how to reply. She was right, Maddie always listened to him, give him advice even when it was a stupid one. Then what about Maddie? Who gave her stupid advice and listened to her?

"You're my brother and I love you. I know the accident was traumatizing for you and you needed all of us" Maddie continued, Scott felt his heart sink at the sight of a crying Maddie. "I helped you. I helped you so much that I would do it all over again but Scott.....no one helped me. Mom and Dad always choose you, they forgot about me and I tried to understand"

Scott pulled her towards him, wanting to embrace her and tell her it was okay. They ignored her just moments ago to listen to Scott about his relationship. He couldn't deny it.

"I tried to understand that you were still recovering" she pulled away from Scott's hold. "So I dealt with that Scott. But recently I can't. I feel like I'm just noise in the background. Like I'm just the girl with a child, the girl that messed up"

"Maddie please don't think of yourself like that. You're more than that"

"Then what am I suppose to think Scott" Maddie shouted, throwing her hands up in the air. "Its always been about you, even now. I'm tired. Then---" she finally stopped, looking at the still sleeping Simon.

"Is it Mikey?" Scott asked, wiping away a tear from the corner of his eye.

"Why do you always bring up Mikey"

"I spoke with him" And this time it was the truth. No lie to get a reaction from her. "He told me if I wanted answers I should ask you"

"Why would you do that" Maddie fell to the floor, Scott thought she couldn't cry anymore at this point. She rubbed her hands on her thighs up and down. "Why did you do that Scott!"

Scott didn't understand. How was Mikey involved in any of this. He slid off the bed and sat beside Maddie on the floor. "Is he hurting you Maddie?"

"He's --" whatever Maddie wanted to say couldn't leave her lips. Scott would walk right out the front door, find Mikey and god forbids do something bad to him. He wasn't one for violence but if he was hurting Maddie he couldn't forgive him. "You should leave"

"He's what Maddie" Scott ignore her statement. "He's what!?" He repeated, this time more determined.

"He's Simons father!" And just like that, the words she's held inside for so long poured out along with the rest off her tears.
