Valentine Wingmen

POV: Saiki Kusuo

T: So Kusuo,

Kokomi has been looking at me with anticipation and sparkling eyes.

T: Do you know what day it is?

S: It's Monday.

T: Well it is Monday. Wait it's not just Monday!

T: It's Valentine's Day!

S: Oh, I guess it is.

T: Are you excited to get chocolates from me?

S: I would be lying if I said I wasn't.

T: I'm worried though,

S: About what?

T: You think you'd get chocolates other girls today ever since your stunt?

S: I prefer not to, especially the fact that the whole point of that stunt was to declare myself as your boyfriend.

When we finally arrived at the lockers, I opened mine and a stream of chocolates poured from my locker and fell to the ground.

S: Good grief.

I looked to Kokomi and she was clearly panicking from the bold display of my sudden rise in popularity. I looked at the stack of chocolates and noticed something.

S: Kokomi,

T: Yeah?

S: Look at this,

I crouched down and pick up one of the chocolates.

S: All the chocolates are small wrappers. All of these are friendly chocolates more than anything. None of these chocolates look expensive and have a romantic undertone either.

T: Hm,

Kokomi still looks unsure.

S: Do you think the other girls would want to make a move on me after knowing I'm your boyfriend?

T: I guess not.

During our conversation, we were greeted by Hairo.

H: Oh, good morning, Saiki, Teruhashi.

We turn to him holding two big bags filled with chocolates. Kokomi looks surprised at the amount while I've seen it before. I turned to her and continued,

S: See, I'm not the odd one in this situation. Hairo gets that much every year.

H: That's a lot of chocolates Saiki, you want to borrow one of my bags?

How resourceful.

When we both sat down in our class, we were approached by Yumehara this time.

Y: Good morning Kokomi, Saiki.

T: Good morning Chiyo.

Y: Uhm, I need you guys' help.

T: Oh, sure, what is it?

Why am I involved?

Y:...there's actually someone I want to give my chocolates to,

T: Is it Kaidou-

Y: Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! He might hear you!

T: Sorry. Are you too nervous?

Y: There's that, but I'm also scared that something will go wrong like last time.

T: What happened last time?

I remembered what happened last time.

Y: It all became a big misunderstanding and nothing came of it.

T: Oh my, that's not good.

Yumehara who was talking to Kokomi the whole time looked to me while I was watching them disinterestedly.

Y: What should I do, Saiki? You're Kaidou's friend after all.

I stared at her and respond,

S: I saw what you did with Kaidou last year,

Yumehara keeps eye contact in surprise and is looking forward to my answer.

S: And it was not good.

Y: What makes you say that?

S: Making Kaidou out of all people to go on a treasure hunt with a vague letter and clues? It would work if it was someone that was smart enough to solve it and take it on surface value, not the idiot with Eighth Grade Syndrome who loves to overthink everything. I know you're fond of the romantic shoujo fantasies, but it is not going to work on Kaidou.

Y: H-hey that's not nice, Kaidou would've figured it out!

I raised an eyebrow in doubt and continued,

S: If he did, the misunderstanding wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Yumehara turned silent and frowned from my answer. I sighed and gave her an actual answer.

S: A "simpler" person requires a simpler method. Just give him the chocolate yourself, and you decide what to do from there. Any romantic gesture has charm to it, that's why it's a romantic gesture.

Y:...You're probably right.

T: That's a surprisingly good answer from you, Kusuo.

S: I don't even know why she's asking me, I'm never interested in these kind of things.

Y: Really? I thought you'd be a more romantic person.

I was confused by her assumption, even Kokomi was surprised.

T: I wish he was more romantic,

S: I try.

T: But what makes you say that, Chiyo?

Y: Saiki challenging the entire school to prove his love for Kokomi? How was that NOT romantic!

I froze and Kokomi notice my shock.

T: You just realised?

S: I never thought that people would see it that way, I just remembered that day being annoying. That might explain the chocolates better.

Y: Yeah, all the girls see you as a romantic icon.

That sounds troublesome. I noticed that Kokomi almost laughed when I was called that.

T: Didn't know you were like that, Romance icon Saiki Kusuo.

S: Never say that again.

At the end of the school day,

We were both about to leave but we were confronted by Kaidou.

K: Teruhashi!

I look at him in mild annoyance, blocking the way for us to leave.

K: You said there was a girl who likes me, I want to know who!

T: Uhm, Kaidou, that's not something that I can just tell you.

Kaidou realises that he just asked a very embarrasing question and lowers his volume.

K:...I'm sorry, it's just that you two have been idolised lately as the Super Couple of the School, especially when it's Valentine's Day. So I got a bit jealous.

Kaidou observed that we're looking behind him and he turned around to see Yumehara in front of him, shyly holding a heart-shaped box of chocolates.

K: Oh, Yumehara-san, I didn't see you there.

Yumehara doesn't respond because she's still nervous.

K: Yumehara-san?

Y: Kaidou-kun!

K: Yes?!

Yumehara forcefully hands him the box of chocolates.

Y: Here!

K: Uh, thanks Yumehara-san, this is a lot for friendly chocolates.

Y:...It's not friendly chocolates.

Y: What?

K: I..I like you, Kaidou-kun.

Kaidou's face slowly turned bright red and he started stuttering.

K: I...I...I...I...I...I

I held Kokomi's hand and we both walked past them.

S: I think this is our cue to leave.

T: Wha-wait,

When we left those two alone, Kokomi properly responded,

T: I wanted to see what he's going to say!

S: His Eight Grade Syndrome also applies to his reaction on romance. If we were there he would be too nervous to respond to her.

Instead of complaining, she kept quiet and stared at me while we're walking out of school.

S: What is it?

T: You're actually a very thoughtful friend.

S: I don't want this "will they won't they" relationship to bother me anymore.

T:...Tsundere.

S: What's that supposed to mean?

T: Oh, I almost forgot.

Kokomi lets go of my hand and pulls out a fancy pink and green box of chocolates from her bag for me. I accepted her chocolates and looked at it for a second.

S:...Did you buy this?

T: Of course not, I made it myself.

S: Because the box looks very well made to be...handmade.

T: I went a bit all out, since it's the last Valentine's Day of our school lives.

I held her by her waist to bring her closer to me.

S: I love it.

T: T-thank you.

While we continued walking, Kokomi started to wonder,

T: I wonder if we're going to celebrate Valentines after we graduate.

POV: Teruhashi Kokomi

T: I wonder if we're going to celebrate Valentines after we graduate.

I just randomly started to ask Kusuo about the future, but Kusuo oddly started to feel distant and detached from me, not even answering my question at first.

T: Kusuo?

S: Hm? Yeah,...when we graduate...

This is actually the first time he didn't give me an actual straight answer. I don't think he's troubled by anything today. Usually, if he doesn't tell me something, it's usually uneccessary for me to know to begin with. But this is about our future, what awaits for us, is there something that he's worried about for our future?

Is there something he's not telling me?
