Chapter 44

We were back in our room five minutes later and had been left alone for the time since things morning until the staff would come in with our dinner once it was ready. Carter had been silent the whole way back to our room. I knew that he was lost in thought and until he was done thinking about his mother's request to be royalty again, I had decided to leave him alone. Maybe by the time dinner got here Carter would be ready to talk about what happened with his mother.

I was curious to know what he was thinking and to also express my thoughts. While I waited for my husband to get out of his head and dinner to arrive, I headed to the closet to change. I was ready to be in some comfy clothes and just relax in a chair after a long and tiring day. It'd also be nice to walk around barefoot too.

My feet were tired of the tennis shoes and heels I had to switch between throughout the day. Heels were for when we met up with someone. And the tennis shoes were for sightseeing and all the walking I had to do while visiting various locations. There was no way I was going to walk around in high heels all day long when I didn't need to.

After I had changed into a t-shirt and some leggings, I headed out of the closet and found that my husband was on the phone, sitting at the large table where we ate our meals. Carter had apparently come out of his thoughts and had decided on calling someone. Who, I wasn't sure of yet, but I walked over and sat down next to him, ready to listen to his side of the conversation and figure out who he had called.

"She wants to be royalty again, Dad," Carter said looking over at me. I gave him a smile and he gave me one back. He directed his attention back to fully listening to his father and was silent for a few minutes. I wasn't surprised that he had called his father. He was probably the person who could best answer questions that Carter had about his mother.

"No, she said royalty. She mentioned that she knew that she couldn't be queen anymore, but I don't really believe that she has given up on that goal. Maybe she thinks that she can somehow become queen for the second time after she's become royalty again. I don't know for sure. That woman is hard to figure out sometimes," Carter said frustrated. I reached over to take a hold of his hand, not letting go after I had squeezed it. There was some silence as Carter listened to his father's response.

I definitely thought that there was a possibility that Julia was still trying to become queen again even though she said that wasn't her goal anymore. She could be very well lying about that to try and make us think that she just wanted to be royalty again. But if Julia really wanted us to believe that she didn't want to be queen again, she was going to have to try harder to make us believe her. Julia has lied way too many times for anyone to ever believe that she could be telling the truth right now.

She didn't seem to understand that you couldn't just go from lying all the time and then start telling the truth and automatically have everyone believe you're being truthful. It just doesn't work like that, but that's what Julia thought.

"Can I put you on speaker phone? Morgan's here now," Carter asked his father bringing my attention back to my husband. The reply must have been yes because Carter pressed the speaker button and then set the phone done into front of both of us.

"Hello? Morgan?" I heard Carter's father say.

"Hello Peter, how are you doing today?" I responded as I leaned into Carter. He responded by leaning back into me too. I felt him kiss the side of my head. After he pulled away, I laid my head down on his shoulder and left it there for awhile.

"Well, I'm stressed about what Carter has told me about his mother like usual, but otherwise I'm doing fine. I guess I should have known that Julia wasn't ever going to give up her quest to be in power again. That's got to be what this whole becoming royalty again is about," Peter said sighing. I'm sure he's a lot less stressed now that he's no longer married to Julia. It must have been exhausting to deal with her all the time. It's just one of the reasons why he didn't stand up to her for so long. He knew it would be such a battle.

"We know the feeling. She makes us stressed out whenever we have to deal with her. Can she become royalty again without having to marry a royal?" I asked him curious to know if he knew the answer.

I was pretty sure that Julia couldn't be royalty ever again unless she married someone else who was royalty. Or if she remarried Peter again, but I don't think that's ever going to happen because Peter knew better now. He had spent enough years already being married to Julia and he wasn't ever going to put himself in that position again especially when it took him so long to get out of that position for the first time.

Julia didn't really have that many other options when it came to marrying someone else who was royalty so Peter was really the only option. But Julia didn't seem to want to take the most obvious route to becoming royalty again. She wanted to become royalty in a different way, without marrying.

"I don't think so. Or else I'm sure there would be plenty of people trying to do what Julia is trying to do, but maybe she's hoping that since she's been royalty before that the government will make an exception for her," Peter responded. That would just be like her too, thinking that she'll get a free pass because of who she used to be.

"She would need the full support of the government right? Not just the ones that are on her side and would say yes," Carter asked.

"Right, but it's never been done before so I don't think anyone would agree to it. Even the ones who are on her side. They would like her to be in power again and that's not going to happen. I think we'd have a war if she came into power again. The people won't suffer through her reigning again and everyone in this country knows that," Peter said.

"So, you think even if the people on her side thought that she could get her power back they still wouldn't help her do it?" Carter asked.

"No, they've seen the reaction to you being king and how much more positivity is coming from the people. They know it would be a very bad decision to go back to Julia being queen. I know they're sometimes still hard to deal with, but in the end they want the best for this country. If there's someone in the government who still wants to go back to the old ways despite the threat of a war starting then they're doing a good job of hiding it. I know you've been able to get rid of those who have been very vocal in the past about where their loyalties really lie, but there still could be people like that in the government. I just don't think they're willing to risk anything right now to have Julia back as queen," Peter replied.

There were definitely still people out there who wanted Julia, or someone like her, back in power. And while there were some of those people who are actively trying to find a way to get Julia back into power, nothing they do is going to work. There are too many people who are against having someone like Julia back in power. I don't think that everyone in the country was ever going to agree on who is in power.

With so many different people in the country, there were too many different opinions and a lot of people in this country who are set in their opinions. Not everyone can change their opinions easily, either because they're just too stubborn or they're so set in their ideas that they can't see anyone else's.

Carter would have to screw up pretty badly for the majority of the country to change their mind about having him as king. And I knew that Carter would ever do something that would in danger anyone in this country. He would never do anything illegal. Carter would never do something that would benefit him over everyone else in the country. He wants what's best for this country and he wants to make sure that everyone is living a comfortable life by being paid well for doing whatever they want to do with their life.

And I know no matter what the challenges he faces while being king, he's going to do his best to make decisions that improve the lives of the people of this country. Julia was all about doing things that helped out just her and people like her. She didn't want to help people who were below her.

"I have my suspicions about a couple of people in the government still, but until I have proof and reasons to fire them they'll stay where they are," Carter responded. He sounded like he wished he could get rid of them now so he didn't have to deal with people who fought him on passing things that helped out the people who needed it the most.

"You're much better at this job than I could ever be. I'm very proud of you," Peter said. I looked over at Carter after lifting my head off of his shoulder and saw that he was smiling. It probably made him feel good to hear that his dad was proud of him and that he thought Carter was a better king than he was.

"I think you should still talk to the government about this so your mother knows you did what she asked. Hearing you say no to her being royalty again, along with the government turning down her request, will lessen her hope of coming back into power," Peter said as I got up from my chair and went over to grab the pad of paper and pen that were sitting on the coffee table.

I went back over to sit down next to my husband and wrote a question for Carter on it. I pushed it towards Carter when I was done. He had already been watching me so he looked down at the pad of paper when it was close to him. After reading the question he nodded his head and then said, "Dad, there's something Morgan and I want to talk to you about, but I think it's something we should do in person. Would you come over to our house the day after we come back?"

"Of course, what time should I be there?" he asked us.

"Anytime. I'll be doing the cooking since we don't want anyone overhearing this subject right now," I said. I knew I wanted Carter's father to come over as soon as possible so that we could have plenty of time to talk about whether or not Julia had done something illegal while she had been the queen and there's a possibility that Peter could have some knowledge about that or he could know how we could find some proof.

Three days later we were back on the train and heading back home. I was glad all my royal duties were over for now and was looking forward to getting a little break as well as being back in my own bed. However, I wasn't going to spend my break from my royal duties, which was only going to last two weeks, doing nothing. I was going to work with Carter to search the palace while he was busy with his job. I knew it was a long shot that there would be proof that Julia had done something illegal hiding somewhere in the palace, but there was still the rule book to find as well. And that had to be somewhere in the palace.

"What are you cooking for dinner when Dad comes over?" Carter asked me as we were sitting in the living room car. I had been reading a book but was now taking a break from it and looking out the window instead.

"I'm not sure yet. I'm sure the fridge will be stocked when we get home so maybe I'll make whatever the chef had planned for that night. I don't know if you've told him that we wouldn't need him to cook dinner that day," I responded while looking over at my husband.

"I let Katharine know that we wouldn't need a cook that day so she could tell the cook. He probably knows by now. Next time I see her I'll ask her to have to cook call me so I can ask him what he had planned for dinner. Unless he left out the recipe for that night," Carter said.

"He might have done that, but you can still talk to Katharine about it and see if she knows anything else. Otherwise you will have to call him and find out what he had planned," I replied smiling at him.

Carter nodded his head while smiling back at me and then was silent again. He picked up the book he had been reading, which had been sitting on his lap open to the page he had been reading. I went back to looking out the window, not quite ready to go back to reading my book just yet.

About an hour and a half later, I was back to reading my book and just about ready to finish the last few pages of it when Katharine came into the living room car. Both Carter and I stopped reading and looked up at Katharine, who had walked over to where we were sitting and was waiting for our attention to be on her. It wasn't hard for us to hear when someone came into the car. The doors were loud every time you opened them.

I'm sure the only way that you might not hear someone coming in is if you had the TV up loud or had headphones in and the volume up loud enough. But neither of those things were happening at the moment so it was very easy to hear the door to the cars open and close.

"Are you two ready to eat lunch?" Katharine asked us once she saw that both of us were looking at her. I didn't close my book just yet since I'm sure that lunch hadn't been started yet.

"Yeah I am," Carter said looking over at me to see what my response would be. I had been watching him to see what he was going to say even though I was sure it was going to be a yes. It was just after noon and we had eaten an early breakfast so he was bound to be hungry enough to each lunch by now just like I was.

"I'm ready to eat lunch too," I responded looking from Carter back to Katharine.

"Alright I'll let the kitchen staff know and I'll come back when lunch is ready," Katharine said starting to turn around and starting to head back over to the car door, but Carter stopped her.

"One more thing Katharine, we wanted to know if the chef at home had dinner planned for the day after we arrived home. Morgan was probably just going to make it herself instead of coming up with something new to make," Carter said before Katharine could get too far out of the car.

"I think he was going to save that meal for another day, but I can tell him that you still want that meal for the day after you arrive back home," Katharine replied after thinking about her answer for a few seconds. She probably needed to remember what had been said between her and the chef when she had talked to him about dinner we would be having the day after we came home.

"That would be great. Thank you," Carter responded smiling at her. She gave him a smile back and then a nod before turning around again.

Katharine left the car and I went back to reading since I was eager to finish the rest of my book even though I didn't have anything else to read until we got back home. All the other books I had brought with me had been finished. There were a couple more I had left at home that were waiting to be read, but I figured I didn't need to bring all of them with me. I had brought four with me to read whenever I had the chance.

Since I knew that we were going to be busy during most of the trip I didn't want to bring too many books. I wasn't sure how many books I was going to be able to finish while we were gone. Most of the reading I had done had been on the train. It was when I had the most time to sit down and read. Although I had been able to read a couple times while we had been in our hotel room and were either done for the day or waiting to leave.

Almost another hour later Katharine came back into the car and let us know that lunch was ready. I had finished my book not too long after she had come the first time to ask us about lunch so I had decided to write while the car was still quiet. Carter was still reading his book and hadn't showed any sign of stopping. He would probably go back to reading it once we had finished eating lunch.

I think he was enjoying the book he was reading and wanted to finish it before he got too busy and would have to wait until he had some free time to be able to read it again. Carter didn't always get read as often as he liked since he was working pretty often. He usually only brought one book with him when we went on vacation.

After I had finished writing down my last thought, I saved the document I was writing in and then closed the lid of the laptop. As long as Carter went back to reading when we came back to the car, then I would go back to writing. I hadn't gotten much writing done while we had been away since I didn't get many chances to write. Most of the time when I wrote, I liked quiet. The only noise I really liked in the background while I wrote was music, which I would put on whenever I didn't want it to be silent while I wrote.

That was pretty much most of the time, but Carter and I hadn't gotten many quiet days while we had been gone so I had decided not to put on any music this time. Carter's phone rang as I stood up from the desk I had been sitting at. He told me that he would meet me in the dining room car after he had taken this call. I left the living room car just as he answered his phone.

When I got into the dining room car, I headed over to the table to sit down and served myself food not knowing how long Carter was going to be. He hadn't mentioned who was on the phone so I wasn't sure if the phone call was business related. If it was business related, then I might be waiting quite a while to each lunch so it was better that I just started without Carter. I knew my stomach wouldn't want to wait either. It was about fifteen minutes later when Carter came into the dining room. And by the look on his face, the phone call had been a good one.

"That was Ethan's second in charge. He was left to keep an eye on things at the palace," Carter said coming over to the table and sitting down across from me. "He told me that the rulebook has been found and it's being hand delivered to my father right now. Dad will look it over and let us know if he finds anything when he comes over for dinner."

"That's good news. I hope whoever found it isn't going to spread around the news of the rulebook being found. We don't need your mother finding out just yet that we have it," I replied.

"Oh no, everyone who was helping search for the rulebook was people I approved of. No one who is loyal to my mother was allowed to search for the rulebook or even knows that there were people looking for it," Carter said smiling. He was definitely happy about this news.

And I knew that he was going to be even happier if we found any evidence that proved his mother had broken the law while she had been queen. There wasn't anyone searching for proof right now though. I would be doing that all by myself when Carter went back to work in a couple of days. He was going to have a couple of days to settle in before he would head to the palace to go back to his daily routine.

I would be going along with him though until I found evidence or until I had exhausted every corner in the palace and had found nothing. But I didn't think I was going to find nothing. I knew there had to be something hidden that would prove that Julia had broken the law.

"Well now we can find out if there's something in there that will tell us what Julia is up to now and maybe you can get it updated so that it reflects current times and not whenever it was made, which I'm sure was quite some time ago. Probably long before your parents were even king and queen. Maybe even before your grandparents were king and queen," I responded smiling back at him. Carter would also be able to update himself on any rules that he didn't know about that were in place for a king and queen. He had never been able to read that book himself.

"I agree. I'm sure that book was written quite some time ago and needs updating. And hopefully when I show the rulebook to the government officials, everything will go in our favor," Carter said. That thought wiped away a little bit of the happiness he had been feeling.

The government officials would be stupid to not update that rulebook and follow any rules in there that didn't make sense to enforce anymore. If there was a rule in the book that said royalty couldn't marry a commoner, then that rule should have never been enforced no matter what time period it was, but I knew that there were still people who felt that only royalty should marrying royalty.

And one of those people included Julia, even though she didn't seem to understand that there weren't too many options among royalty for royalty too choose from. Not every royal was related, but that doesn't mean that royalty should only choose from royalty who they are not related to. There were plenty of other people to choose a potential spouse from.

"I'm sure things will go in our favor. The government officials have to know that you'll give up the throne just to stay married to me and they don't want to upset the people by losing a king that's popular among the people. Plus, you have more people on the government officials who are on your side than on your mother's right?" I asked him. Carter nodded his head, but didn't say anything. "Then there's also the fact that we might find evidence of your mother breaking the law and they certainly won't overlook that no matter if they're on her side or not. If they truly love their country, then they'll punish Julia for whatever she may have done."

"That's true. Maybe I'll wait to bring up the rulebook for awhile. As long as my mother doesn't know that we have it, then we don't have to worry about whatever she's planning," Carter replied nodding his again. I think what I had just said had made him feel better.

"I think that's a good idea. You do also have to talk to the government officials about your mother's request so that'll keep her occupied. Once she gets her request denied, then we can see what her next move is," I said. I went back to eating since I had stopped when Carter had come into the room.

"I agree," Carter responded before he started to dish the soup the chef had made into his bowl and then grabbed a roll from the basket sitting next to the large bowl filled with soup. There was probably way more in that bowl than Carter and I would eat, but I knew that the rest of it would be saved.

It would be either finished off by the staff on the train who hadn't had lunch yet or it would be sent to our house for us to finish off. Not everyone on the train ate meals at the same time since there were jobs that still needed to be tended too.
