Chapter Two

Serena walked back to the warzone the newborn vampires had cooked up, tears dried to her cheeks and her knuckles aching from how tight her fists were balled up. The sounds of screams and yells took their place in the woman's ears again as she stepped down onto pavement, not bothering to use her enhanced speed. The stench of blood and ash that lingered in the Seattle air was enough to make Serena's nose burn. A fire was ignited inside of her, of hunger and desire. All the blood being spilled was starting to become too hard to resist for the female vampire, especially with all the dead bodies that lined the streets.

A familiar female voice snapped Serena out of her thoughts, her senses focusing on something other than human blood. It only took a moment for Serena to register that the voice belonged to Victoria and the redhead wasn't too far away. She was in an alleyway with Riley, their backs towards the onlooker as they looked at a photograph. Serena's dry eyes caught a flash of the photograph, noticing two people standing side by side. A brunette female stood a few inches shorter than the man beside her, who was looking down at her with proud eyes. Serena concentrated all of her energy on the photo, remembering every detail of the two subjects' faces. The man had golden coloured eyes with a strong jaw and pale skin. Ghostly pale, just like Serena's.

A sudden twitch of energy traveled through the woman, causing her to squeeze her eyes shut. She exhaled a shaky breath before running away from Victoria, Riley, and the alley. The photograph was embedded in her brain, and she needed to find the two people in it.

Serena felt like she had been running for weeks. She was thirsty, exhausted, and her feet ached with every long stride she took. In actuality, it had only been a few hours since the woman had left Seattle without looking back. She hadn't fed in over twelve hours and her strength was slowly starting to dwindle away. Colours of blue and orange started to paint themselves above the evergreen trees as the sun woke up and rose in the sky. Serena willed herself to slow down, enjoying the view. For a split second, she felt at peace. A hollow feeling had embedded itself in her chest but as she watched the large ball of light, the hole was filled.

The smell of iron snapped Serena out of her bliss. She turned back to the path, senses going wild as she inhaled deeply. The woman's brain was screaming at her as the metallic stench of blood was carried past by the calm wind.

Serena squeezed her eyes shut, seeing the photograph of the two people in her mind again. Air whistled in her ears and her black hair was pulled away from her face as she picked up speed, running away from the source of food as fast as her legs would carry her. The trees were a blur of green as Serena ran, her feet deciding the route. The female didn't know where she was going. She was trusting herself to head in the right direction, towards the people in Victoria's photograph.

Some vampires have special abilities. They had them as humans, but get heightened when the transition from man to monster occurs. Serena was capable of photographic memory. She could look at something, encapture it in her brain, then go find it without even knowing where it was. It was risky to go looking for something, but Serena had an eternity to travel. She didn't mind the adventure and lack of certainty that came with her talent. In cases like these, where she was running through a forest to warn two strangers of a potential attack that was being planned against them, Serena thought the trip was worth it.

Out in the distance, Serena's eyes focused on something that was rapidly approaching her. The trees began to thin out and a white house sat just beyond them. Wherever the female was heading, she suspected her arrival would be soon. Serena slowed down, hiding her body behind a tall, thick tree with aged bark. There was no one around but she couldn't risk getting caught. Just as Serena was about to make a break away from whoever's backyard she had ended up in, a silver Volvo came streaking into the driveway with the loud radio muffled by the closed windows.

Serena ducked behind the tree, most of her vision blocked by it's ashy green bark. She watched out of the corner of one eye as a man got out of the car, his blue shirt flush against his chest as the wind hit it. The sleeves were rolled up, revealing his pale as snow skin that seemed to shine under the fresh rays of morning light. Serena hadn't seen his face yet but the sound of a door closing shifted her attention. A brunette female came walking down the porch steps of the house, tucking her hair behind one ear. Serena smirked as she saw the girl's face, realizing she had ended up exactly where she needed to be. The man walked around his car, looking up suddenly at the tree that Serena was mostly hidden behind. The girl darted out of view, standing directly beside the tree so she wouldn't be seen. She managed to catch a glimpse of his face though and had his blonde hair and strong facial features permanently inked into her mind.

The female got into the Volvo after the door was opened for her, and the male walked back around the car. He stopped in the doorway of the driver's side, staring at the forest just beyond the house. Serena had moved in a way that she could still him but hoped he couldn't see her. She maintained focus, her breath catching in her throat as she swore she made eye contact with the stranger, his golden eyes squinting in response. Without a second glance, he got into the car. Serena watched as the pair drove away, moving out from behind the tree with the rough bark against her fingertips and a wide grin set on her face.

"Gotcha." Serena spoke into the peaceful silence of the backyard. She didn't know where she was or who those two people were in relation to Victoria. She just knew that she was running on the right road.
