Chapter 7: The Crook and Cranny

A normal filler chapter, I might post 1 or 2 more of these before we get to the juicy stuff. Hope you guys enjoy nonetheless, Carter Out!

---------------

About some time has passed since my hangout with Sayaka, and currently, Makoto and I were searching around the school. We were in the dorm's hallway as we examined the metal plates.

Apollo: Makoto, I thought about something earlier that I want to try out.

Makoto: What is it?

Apollo: Did you take Chemistry class during Dusk High?

Makoto: Erm, no. I took Biology and Physics.

Apollo: Well shit, because I have an idea to burn this metal plating into liquid. From there, we can see the outside.

Makoto: Oh, that's a good idea.

Apollo: Yea, but I need to know what metal this is. Don't want to try and burn the school down within.

I went over to the metal and tried knocking on it. It emitted no sound, so I assumed that the particles inside the metal were hard. It's like diamond in a sense, and those have really high melting points. It'll take the center of the earth to burn that ore down. But, I doubt this school has the budget to buy those ores.

Apollo: If only I memorized the periodic table and the melting/boiling points of metals...

I looked over at Makoto.

Apollo: Is there some sort of Chemistry textbook we can use around here? It is a school after all.

Makoto: Why not search the school store? There's bound to be something in there.

Apollo: Oh, you're right. Let's go.

Walking to the school store, my mind was brainstorming with ideas to get out of this school. We pass by several students minding their own business as we arrived at the school store. Once we arrived there, I started to go through the items it has.

Apollo: Let's see here... Spare clothes, notebooks, pens that I'll take, towels, ah here they are!

Revealing a set of books in the corner, I searched through them all to see if there was a Chemistry textbook I could use.

Apollo: Math...Physics... Ah, here it is!

Revealing a Chemistry book, I unwrapped the plastic around it and started to open the pages. However, this book was way off what I would expect from a Chemistry book. It was full of pictures of Monokuma posing, which was something I did NOT wanted to see.

Apollo: Eh!? What kind of-?

Makoto: What's wrong?

Apollo: Makoto, come take a look here.

Makoto comes over and I flip through the pages. All of those pages was Monokuma posing, to which Makoto has the same reaction as me.

Makoto: Eh!? What kind of-?

Apollo: Exactly my point.

Flipping through the pages until the last one, a note lies there.

Apollo: A note?

I tore it off the book and read it.

From Mr. Monokuma:

"Whoever is reading this, I recommend you stop trying to find ways to escape. As I said, you can try, but you will NOT find a way out of here! Go and start thinking of some murder plan if you wanna get out!  I've thought of a million things to safeguard any escape, so just be a good boy or girl and accept your life here, dammit!"

"Although, I'll do admit that you are a smart one for trying to think outside the box. However, even so, you can't burn those metal plates down. Those are fire-proof and can't be destroyed whatsoever. You might be a tricky one to bring down with despair."

I crumpled up the paper and tore it to pieces.

Makoto: Hey, I didn't get to read it.

Apollo: It's not worth your time to. It's just Monokuma teasing us.

Makoto: He...knew that someone would try it?

Apollo: Apparently. That bear's a smart one.

Makoto: He is our headmaster, after all...

Apollo: Tch, I'm not giving up nonetheless. C'mon, let's go try and find some ways out.

Makoto: R-Right!

Leaving the school store, we went back to the Main Hall to think of new plans. As we arrived there though, we were met with 2 familiar faces.

Aoi: Oh, you two!

Sakura: Greetings.

Makoto: Oh! Hina and Sakura!

Apollo: What're you two up to?

Aoi: Same as you, I guess.

Sakura: We're trying to think of a way to get to the higher floors. There might be more clues up there.

Apollo: Like a trapdoor that'll lead us to the roof?

Aoi: Something like that.

Makoto: There might be a switch around here that we don't know of. I'm gonna search for it.

Apollo: Actually, I already searched around here last night and found nothing. Maybe you can go find something I didn't?

Makoto: Erm, sure. It doesn't hurt to try.

Makoto starts searching around the room, while I was staring at the big metal bars that blocked the stairwell to the second floor.

Apollo: What do you two think is up there?

Aoi: I hope there's a pool! And a way to escape, of course.

Sakura: It will probably be more facilities that we can access.

Apollo: Hmm...

Shaking the metal bars for any sort of hints, I couldn't get much other than the fact that it's super tight. No sharp thing can cut through this.

Apollo: Sakura, is it possible that you can make this thing budge?

Sakura: I tried, and no success.

Well, that plan foiled.

Before long, Makoto approaches us, a sad look on his face.

Makoto: Nope, didn't find anything.

Apollo: That stinks. Let's try to find other clues then. I'll leave you two to try solve this.

Aoi: Leave it to us!

Sakura: Not much can be done, but I'm sure we can find something out.

Makoto: Well, we'll see you later.

So with that, Makoto and I continued to search around the school.

Before long, we'd arrived at the kitchen in the Dining Hall.

Makoto: So this is the kitchen, huh?

Apollo: Yep.

Makoto goes around the room to see its design. He then opens the fridge and sees the matrimony of food stuffed inside it.

Makoto: So it's true.

Apollo: Enough food for all 16 of us. Don't know how long that'll last though.

Makoto: ...

He then looks around and suddenly snaps to attention as he points at the knives on the wall.

Makoto: That's...a bit out in the open.

Apollo: Let's move the knives away. We don't want anyone to grab one and stab someone with it.

Makoto: Yea, you're right.

I walk towards the knives and put them inside a drawer. Makoto does the same.

Apollo: Hey Makoto, you better not stab me in the back, you hear me?

Makoto: What!? Of course I won't!

Apollo: Good. I wouldn't want my bestie to be my murderer.

Makoto: Jeez... Why would you say that?

Apollo: Paranoia, that's all. Anyone can kill us at any moment, so I'll have to keep my guard up, even if they are my closest friends.

Makoto: Apollo... I wouldn't dare lay a hand on you. I swear on my life.

Apollo: Same here, but... (Sigh) It can't hurt to be on guard all the time.

Makoto: I guess so...

Apollo: Even you, Sayaka...

So with that, we left the kitchen and continued searching around the school.

And after a few hours, the two of us had already explored the entirety of the first floor. Makoto looked exhausted, so we went back to the dorms.

Apollo: Jeez, you look dead.

Makoto: I...didn't really get much sleep.

Apollo: Really? I slept fine last night.

Makoto: How!? Aren't you uncomfortable in this situation?

Apollo: I am, and that's what worries me. But, if I can't get good rest, then I can't focus the next day.

Makoto: I guess that's true... (Sigh) I'll go take a nap. Call me for dinner, will you?

Apollo: Sure. I'm gonna go around to see any more clues then.

Makoto: Right.

Makoto unlocks his door and closes it, to which I sigh and start thinking about what to do next.

Apollo: Let's see... I should try and ask others for what they've found.

With that in mind, I went around to search for other students that I haven't interacted yet to see what they've found. 1st person I bumped into was Taka, who was simply walking in a circle by the dorm hallway.

Apollo: Hey Taka!

Kiyotaka: Hmm? Oh! Good evening Apollo!

It's already evening? Sheesh...

Apollo: Umm... I just wanna ask about what you've found so far. I'm accumulating what everyone's found so far.

Kiyotaka: Ah, I see! Well, I shall tell you on what I have found so far!

Apollo: Mkay, let's hear it.

Kiyotaka: What I found is...

He points his finger up and exclaims.

Kiyotaka: There are 2 toilets outside our own rooms! One beside the gym and one beside the incinerator!

Apollo: Right...

Kiyotaka: That's all I have to report! Until next time!

Kiyotaka proceeds to start walking back in circles, so with a blank look on my face, I went back to my room and grabbed my notepad before proceeding onwards. With the pen I got from the store, I started to write down what Taka reported. I also listed down the facts I knew of and what Hina and Sakura's report was.

*Taka - 2 toilets. 1 beside Incinerator, 1 beside Gym.

*Hina and Sakura - Stairwell to F2, gate blocking the way. Gate too strong, no switch (?)

Sayaka was still in her room since afternoon, so I'm gonna assume she's asleep. An idol's gotta keep a fresh face, after all.

So with that, I left the dorms to search for more clues. I walked towards the incinerator. There, I found Hifumi, who was...going through some trash? That's odd. Nonetheless, I called him out.

Apollo: Yo Hifumi!

Hifumi looked shocked to be called out, and he falls straight into the trash can. I sweatdropped at this.

Hifumi: I'm okay...

Hifumi climbs out the garbage bag and walks over to me, the absolute unit's stomach bouncing back and forth.

Hifumi: Hello Mr. Man of Culture, what has brought you here today? Are you here to talk about more about fanfiction?

Apollo: Not this time. I just want to accumulate data, that's all.

Hifumi: D-Data? For what?

Apollo: I'm listing down what everyone has found so far.

Hifumi: O-Oh... W-Well, there's not much I found here, hehehe...

He seemed nervous, so I narrow my eyes at him in suspicion.

Apollo: What are you hiding, Mr. Ultimate Fanfic Creator?

Hifumi: NOTHING!!! NOTHING AT ALL!!!

Apollo: That reaction tells me otherwise. Fine then, I'll just go tell everyone that you're looking through girl's trash.

Hifumi: EEEEEK! HOW DID YOU KNOW!?

Apollo: Heh, don't you know? I'm psychic.

Hifumi: Say what!?

Apollo: Just kiddin'. I can see it right behind you.

I point behind the unit towards the feminine-looking objects that are exposed in the garbage bag, to which Hifumi suddenly darts and snatches the bag away before throwing it away out of my sight.

Hifumi: You saw nothing!

Apollo: (To myself, writing down on the notepad) Hifumi, dash, searching through girl's trash...

Hifumi then got on his knees and begged towards me.

Hifumi: Please! I'll do anything as long as you don't tell anyone!

Apollo: Anything?

Hifumi: Yes!!!

Apollo: Alright then. I order you to try and find actual clues instead of looking through girl's rubbish.

Hifumi: T-That's it?

Apollo: I need clues, and there's nothing I want at the moment. Plus, I hate a master-servant vibe, it creeps me out.

Hifumi: B-But that's one of my favorite categories...

Apollo: I heard that, you know?

Hifumi: Eek! I'm sorry! I'll start looking for clues now!

Hifumi starts looking through the room, to which I roll my eyes and left him to do his thing. From there, I start making my way to wherever my consciousness took me, and before long I found myself inside the laundry. In there, I met the Ultimate Fashionista minding her own business.

Not wanting to interrupt, I started searching around the room on my own, to which she suddenly clears her throat to grab my attention.

Junko: You know, it's rude to not say hello.

Apollo: S-Sorry, you looked as if you were thinking to yourself, so I didn't want to interrupt.

Junko: It's fine, really. So, what'd you come here for?

Apollo: I'm just gathering data as I go, whether from people or some anomalies I forgot to check when I was exploring with Makoto.

Junko: Oh, I see.

Apollo: Now that you're here, I'm wondering whether you have anything new that you can report. I'll write it down in this notepad and I can share it if we have another meeting like yesterday.

Junko: Oh, right. Well, other than some junk, I didn't find much other than the fact that these metal plates are totally indestructible. I tried pulling to see if it would budge, no luck.

Apollo: You? Sorry, but you seem...rather weak to think about pulling those plates off.

Junko: Excuse me? You don't think I exercise?

Apollo: Oh, I do. But I thought that bulking your arms would ruin some fashion designs. Like a cute girl type vibe, it'll destroy it entirely.

Junko: No, you got it all wrong! I do exercise my arms from time to time, but it doesn't grow outwards because it's just muscle! You're thinking about fat!

Apollo: I...guess so. Sorry if that offended you.

Junko: None taken!

I then write down on the notepad, even though I knew that those plates were indestructible since this morning.

*Junko - Plates are indestructible, can't be pulled off.

Apollo: Right, thanks for that.

Junko: Wait!

Apollo: Huh?

Junko: Before you go... I want to ask you something.

Apollo: What is it?

Junko looks down on the ground before looking at me.

Junko: The other night, you held me back from punching that ugly-smelly writer, even though you didn't like her too. Why did you hold me back?

Apollo: Well, I made a mistake of letting her words get to me. I'm a chill person, but if anyone talks shit to my friends, especially Makoto and Sayaka, then...

I clench my fist.

Apollo: I get all angry inside and I can't hold it in. I just see red and...

Junko: And what?

Apollo: I'd get out of control. I'd go bonkers. Makoto knew this, so the instant I stood up to face Toko, he pulled me down to keep me under control.

Junko: I...see. So you held me back to avoid doing what you did?

Apollo: Yea, I guess you can say it that way.

Junko: You...

Apollo: I-I know I interfered. I know you wanted to punch her, it was wrong of me to get in your path. I'm sorry.

Junko: What? No! I wanted to thank you for snapping my senses!

Apollo: Wha...?

Junko: If you didn't do that, I would've punched her real good. A fight would start, and I might get a bruise or something. That'll ruin my look. Then I'd get in trouble and gain a bad reputation.

Apollo: I see...

Junko: So, thank you for that, I guess.

Apollo: N-No problem.

Junko: Also, by the way, I completely dig you being with Sayaka.

She gives me that wide teasy grin, to which I blush.

Apollo: H-Hey!

Junko: You two are so cute together! I'm sure everyone agrees with me on that!

Apollo: Junko, no.

Junko: Junko, yes~! Are you in a relationship with her? Is that why you two are so close?

Apollo: No, we're just friends from middle school, that's all.

Junko: Oh c'mon, don't be shy. Even if you two were from middle school, then why isn't Makoto acting the same way to her, hmm?

Apollo: M-Maybe he's not interested in her- Oh wait.

Junko: AHA! I knew it! You like her, don't you!?

Apollo: Junko!

Junko: Aww, I can imagine you two being a couple! Ahh, that'll be such goals~!

Apollo: ... I'm leaving.

Leaving the laundry to let Junko fantasize about my future with Sayaka, I decided to forget about all that and went to wherever my consciousness would lead me next. Passing the dorms, I found myself at the dining hall, and as I open the doors there, I met Mondo and Chihiro minding their own business.

Apollo: Oi you two!

Mondo: ...What's up?

Chihiro: Oh, hey Apollo...

Apollo: You two find anything new yet?

Mondo: Bah, nothing much. We basically found all the fuckin' things from yesterday.

The gangster sighs before slamming his hands on the table.

Mondo: This fucking sucks! I want to get the hell out of here!

Chihiro: M-Me too... We really are stuck in here...

Apollo: Oh calm down you two, it'll be alright.

Mondo: Alright my ass! Unless you pull an escape route out of your fucking ass, then we're still stuck here! Nothing will be fuckin' gained!

Apollo: I'm sure if we keep our heads up, we'll find a way out eventually. We'll just gotta wait till then.

Mondo: What are you, a fucking pastor!? The other day, you punched the fuck out of me, and you're acting the innocent one now!? Pussy!

Apollo: Jeez... Just tell me what you two know so I can get out of here.

Mondo: Fine! We found nothing! So there!

Chihiro: Actually, I did find something earlier.

Apollo: Oh?

Chihiro: I-It's more of a thought...

Apollo: Let's hear it. I'm interested in what the Ultimate Programmer thought up of.

Chihiro: Uh, okay...

Chihiro lets out a deep breath before continuing.

Chihiro: I was thinking that... the people who put us in this position has to be someone bizarre, someone...abnormal. So I was thinking... Could that person be a certain murderous fiend who takes delight in killing?

Apollo: A certain murderous fiend... Any ideas?

Chihiro: Well...maybe. I mean,  I...can't really be certain, but...

Mondo: Just say your mind, it'll probably be a waste of fucking time anyway.

Chihiro: Oh, okay... Well, have you heard about Genocide Jack?

Apollo: Genocide Jack!? The serial killer all over the news and internet!? Of course I do!

Chihiro: He's obviously some kind of super crazy killer, so I thought that maybe...

Apollo: He's the one behind this? That's... a good thing to keep in mind. Thanks a lot Chihiro, that's gonna help a lot.

Chihiro: R-Really? It's just a thought...

Apollo: But it makes a lot of sense! It's a good possibility.

Chihiro: W-Well in that case, then I'm glad. Hehe!

Mondo: Hmph, it's just a fuckin' thought... Nothin' special...

Writing on my notepad, I listed down new information.

*Mondo - Nothing.

*Chihiro - Has an idea that the person keeping us here is Genocide Jack (?) Very important to keep in mind.

Apollo: Genocide Jack, huh? Interesting...

With that in mind, I left the Dining Hall to search for more. So far, the only ones that are supposedly left are Leon, Kyoko, Byakuya, Toko, Makoto, Sayaka, and Hiro. Makoto and Sayaka are asleep, Byakuya is probably doing Byakuya things, so is Kyoko. That leaves Hiro, Toko, and Leon. Hiro is a bit dumb, so he might not be much help. Toko and I had a bad start, so Leon might help. I dunno where he is though, so that's gonna suck.

Unfortunately for me, for the next hour and a half, I spotted no one. Not a single person that I had already met. That just leaves Hifumi, then that's it I guess.

So with that, I went over to the incinerator, only to see Hifumi is...not there.

Apollo: Well, that sucks.

I look around to see that the incinerator rooms been moved and scattered around, so I suppose that Hifumi's actually been searching for clues, so that's good. I guess it'll have to come down to dinner time where we can share information.

And as if the god of time would have it, I looked up at the time to see that it was 7 PM. That's where dinner time started last night, so I decided to head back to the dorms to wake Sayaka and Makoto up.

As I arrived at the rooms, I see that Leon and Toko had just come out from their own rooms, so that answered the question where they had went. Rolling my eyes, I made a mental note to myself that people do camp in their rooms. No Byakuya or Kyoko though, but that's expected.

Walking to Makoto's door, I knocked loudly so he could hear it. I could then hear a muffled noise come from inside, which I expect is Makoto starting to wake up. Instantaneously, I rang Sayaka's doorbell to alert her, and I could also hear a muffled sound come from inside.

And at the same time, both doors swung open, revealing a sleepy Makoto and a fresh Sayaka.

Apollo: Hello Makoto, and you too Sayaka.

Makoto: (Sleepily) Ugh... Hi...

Sayaka: Hello Apollo! I just had the most relaxing afternoon nap of my life! It must've had to do with our time spent this morning, no doubt about it.

Apollo: Hehe, glad to hear it Sayaka.

Makoto: (Sleepily) And I had the worst nap ever... I feel so sleepy and stiff...

Sayaka: Are you alright, Makoto? Maybe you're sick.

Makoto: (Yawns) I-It's alright, I'm used to feeling like this. Before Hope's Peak, Biology homework or exams would keep me up late, so I'm used to waking up like this...

Under Makoto's right black eye, I could see eye bags as well.

Apollo: (Chuckles) You have 2 dents now!

I point to his black eye, then to his eyebags, to which Sayaka lets out a chuckle.

Sayaka: Heehee, you look like someone who just had a failed make-up session!

Apollo: Oh my god, he really does!

Sayaka and I laugh at Makoto, who simply sighs and walks away.

Apollo: Hey, don't take it personally! C'mon!

Letting out a sigh, I unlocked my door to place my notepad and pen back, before heading towards the Dining Hall, Sayaka right behind me.

---------------

During dinner, not much was going on. We had a meeting, but it wasn't as productive as yesterday for obvious reasons. I didn't feel like using my notepad since there wasn't any data from half the students, so I felt like I had no need to bring the notepad with me.

As I said, dinner went fine. Sayaka and I teased each other, I messed with Makoto, and thankfully I got to no altercations with anyone. From the 2nd day, I could tell who I was alright with, who I'm neutral with, and the people who hated me. In fact, I'll make the list right now, cuz why not?

Alrights:
-Makoto
-Sayaka
-Junko
-Hifumi (?)
-Hina

-Sakura

Neutral:
-Hiro

-Taka
-Celeste (?)
-Kyoko (?)
-Leon
-Chihiro

Dislikes:
-Toko
-Byakuya
-Mondo

By my chart, I've had a good 2 days of making friends so far. I'll just hope I'll get to understand Mondo better, and I might try and reconcile things with Toko. I won't even try with Byakuya, I've already accepted that he'll be better than me anyway.

So with that, dinner time ends and so does our meeting. Not much new information was exchanged other than some topics, but those topics weren't that interesting either. So with that, we all went back to our dorm rooms or continued exploring. Personally, I went back to my dorm room with Sayaka and Makoto, because man was I dead tired!

Opening my dorm room, I immediately took off my hoodie and joggers and washed them. After that, I placed my clothes on the table and turned on the lamp so it could dry, and in my undershirt and underwear, I brushed my teeth to end the night.

However, as I was brushing my teeth, my doorbell rang. And boy was I surprised when I heard that, I nearly choked on my toothbrush when it rang.

Apollo: Crmng!

I wanted to say coming, but crmng came out instead. I quickly washed my mouth and went to open the door. As soon as I was about to, however, I realized I was in my underwear, so with a curse, I grabbed my wet joggers and wore them. It felt really uncomfortable, but whatever. It's better than standing with my underwear out.

So, I opened the door, and standing in the doorway was Sayaka.

Sayaka: Hey Apoll-Oh...

She seems to have noticed my undershirt, so I let out a nervous laugh.

Sayaka: Did I catch you at a bad time?

Apollo: If you can handle looking at my undershirt, then not really.

Sayaka: Okay!

Sayaka enters my room and I close the door.

Apollo: So, what are you doing here?

Sayaka: I just wanted to chat for a while! I already slept, so I'm full of energy!

Apollo: I see. What do you want to talk about?

Sayaka: Hmm, anything really. Let's think about the past, shall we?

---------------

Sayaka and I proceeded to talk about random stuff for about an hour and a half, to which after that I suddenly felt very sleepy. Sayaka seems to have noticed, because she pokes my hip to keep me awake.

Sayaka: Sleepy?

Apollo: Mhm...

Sayaka: Well, should we call it a day then?

Apollo: Mmm...

No words came from my mouth. I was dead tired.

Sayaka: Say, Apollo... Do you mind if I stay by your side a bit longer?

Apollo: Hmm?

Sayaka: I don't want to sleep yet, so I want to stay here for a bit.

Apollo: Sure...

Sayaka proceeds to sit at the left side on the bed, so I positioned myself at the other side at the bed. I laid down, closed my eyes, and went to sleep.

And that's how Day 2 ended. Not much success was made in terms of escaping, but I did get closer to these students more, especially Sayaka. So, I guess that it's been somewhat alright.

Sayaka: Good night, Apollo.

Apollo: Good night, Sayaka.

As I tried to fall asleep, I remembered what Sayaka and I talked about this morning at the gym. About Sayaka's dream and such. She would do so much for her dream, no, she did anything to achieve her dream, and some weren't pleasant. What did she mean by that? I could only hope it wasn't anything dirty or something like that.

She carried so much on her shoulders, and here is me, with no future in sight. Her dream is about to crumble, and she can't do anything about it. That has to feel like shit. I feel bad for her, and I want to support her any way I can.

But, the only way out of here, according to Monokuma, is by killing each other. I don't approve, obviously, but if Sayaka wants to, then I'll be stuck with 2 choices. I help Sayaka out, or I try and change her mind. But, it's not my right to change her mind, but then again, killing isn't good...

Gah, I don't know anymore. I should worry until tomorrow morning to think about that.

And with that, I was lights out. This ends Day 2, and soon later will begin the start of Day 3.
