Karlie

“Then why can’t you just forget about the rest?” Taylor begged. As I stood there with my head buried in her chest, a million thoughts raced through my mind. When I left my apartment today I was positive that I was going to break up with her, but now I couldn’t help but think I was making a mistake. Maybe it would be best to forget about all of it?

“I don’t know,” I muttered breathlessly. I could feel my cheeks flush and I pulled away just that my eyes could meet hers. They glistened their beautiful shade of ocean blue, but they were squinted in worry. “I have no idea what I want anymore. I know that I want you, but I don’t want all of the drama and uneasy feelings that comes with being in a relationship with you.” I said. Taylor let out a deep sigh as she placed her hands on my shoulders. She moved closer to me, her face now just inches from mine.

“Karlie, I get why you feel this way.” She cooed softly. “But is it not enough for me to say that I need you? The only person I want to be with is you, and we both know that we’re meant for each other. Please.” Taylor begged. Her bottom lip quivered and I knew that another onset of tears was about to come on. As much as I wanted to believe her Taylor’s words only made me more confused than I was before. I definitely wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make a decision right now, and I wanted to avoid making one that I would regret. My chest tightened and my breaths became shorter as an overwhelming feeling washed over me. I tried to calm myself down by inhaling deeply but it hadn’t helped.

“I just need some time to think,” I fumbled nervously. I felt Taylor’s hands gently slide down my arms and she interlocked her fingers with mine. “But don’t say that I’m the only person you want to be with when you know it’s not true.” I added, pursing my lips with uncertainty.

“No, it’s true!” She argued. Her hands squeezed mine and she took a deep breath. “You’re not getting it. I. Want. You. If I didn’t, do you really think I would be trying so desperately to get you back?” She asked. Her eyes softened and her head turned, waiting for me to answer.

“That’s the thing Taylor,” I started. “You keep telling me that you’re trying to get me back, but you haven’t done anything to prove it. Talk is easy. You can say whatever you want, but when it comes time to act on it, you haven’t done anything.” I explained.

“I would, but you haven’t given me the chance. We were together for barely over a week until we broke up again, and that’s not really a lot of time for me to do anything, you know.” She refuted. Taylor took her bottom lip between her teeth and began to chew it anxiously. I could tell that she was dancing around what she really wanted to say in an attempt to avoid pissing me off, but I didn’t care.

“Well then, maybe it’s a sign,” I concluded, shrugging my shoulders. Another stray tear fell down my cheek and Taylor’s hand rose instinctively to wipe it away. However, I quickly brushed my thumb under my eye, denying her such opportunity. “If we can’t even go a week without fighting, how are we going to do anything else?” I pondered.

“What? No, that’s not what I meant by that.” She explained. Her eyes flicked up to the seeing in a half-hearted attempt to roll them, but they eventually found mine once more. “All that I was trying to tell you was that I didn’t the time to show you how much you mean to me. I had wanted to start by thanking you for take me back that night at my place, but you wouldn’t hear it. I can show you that I want this, but you have to let me.” She pleaded. I could hear the desperation in her voice as she spoke the last few words. I nodded my head slowly as I let my thoughts wander: She had a point, but I wasn’t sure if it was worth the risk. If we did work things out, I was almost positive that I couldn’t handle another break up if there were one. Contrarily, when things were good between the two of us I had never felt happier. Even if there were more problems in the future, the best times that we had together would always overshadow the bad. Maybe the reward would be worth the risk after all?

The silence between us became awkward and tense as Taylor stood in front of me, anxiously awaiting a reply. I shot her a worried glance and squeezed her hand gently.

“Okay,” I said slowly, a deep sigh escaping my lips. “One chance, Taylor. I can’t give you anything else.” I managed. Taylor cracked a small smile, and a sigh of relief washed through her. Before I knew it, her arms were wrapped around me, pulling me in once more.

“Karlie, thank you,” She breathed into my ear. “I won’t let you down.”

“I hope not.” I whispered gently. As Taylor pulled away her cheek brushed against mine, and I immediately could feel the heat begin to rise to my face. Thankfully, she raised her hands to cup my cheeks, hiding any redness that my cheeks had emitted.

“I won’t, I promise, Karls.” Her eyes softened as she looked into mine, and she flashed an adorable crooked smile. I hoped she was right, but for now, I was content with being in her arms again.

“I should really head out,” I said, changing the subject. “I stayed longer than I thought I was going to, and I have an interview shortly.” Taylor nodded her head, but her face fell to the floor.

“Well, I’m glad that you stayed,” She said. “If you want, call me when you’re done and we can do something. Are you free over the next few days?” Taylor asked, looking up at me again.

“Yeah. I’m pretty sure I don’t have anything for the next week.” I replied, trying to remember what my schedule was for the upcoming few days. She lit up at my response, and she grinned excitedly.

“Awesome! I can’t wait.” Her mood had shifted quickly, and it made me wonder what had come to her mind.

“You don’t have to sound that excited,” I chuckled as I walked over to her front door. “It’s just some time off.” I added. Taylor followed me through her apartment as she shook her head.

“It’s not just some time off. I’m going to plan something.” She giggled.

“Really? What would that be?” I asked, curious.

“I’m not telling you!” She scolded. “You should get to your interview, I have some things to figure out.” Taylor said.

“Alright, alright.” I said, rolling my eyes. “I’ll call you in a bit.” I reached for the doorknob and gave it a twist, then pulled the door open.

“Sounds good,” She mumbled. “And thank you, again.” She said, just above a whisper.

“Don’t mention it.” I said, flashing Taylor a knowing smile, and a light giggle to match. She returned my grin and I quickly turned and walked down the hallway.
