Chapter 20: Missed Opportunities and Childhood memories

23rd May 2021 - Monaco GP

The Monaco Grand Prix was regarded to be the fanciest and one of the most exciting races of the season.

Well, Kit wasn't feeling very excited nor fancy. Her sprained wrist meant she wasn't allowed to participate in the race (in fear of her injury becoming worse) and Nicholas Latifi would be replacing her this weekend.

As much as she wanted to stay in bed, Kit did still have to show up at the racetrack. Media duties apparently still existed even when you weren't racing.

She rolled on her side, grabbing her glasses and putting them on before getting up. Kit walked over to her suit case and fumbled through it trying to find her work clothes. She really should have laid them out last night but then again when does she ever do that.

She quickly found the last item she needed (which was her socks) and turned to look back at the bed. Pierre seemed to still be fast asleep which gave Kit an opportunity to use the shower first.

Once Kit had showered, She gently woke Pierre up. When he was awake or at least awake enough that he wouldn't fall back asleep again, Kit headed out to the Kitchen. It was there that Kit caught Charles on a phone call that he was undeniably frustrated about.

"What do you mean?" He asked, running a hand through his hair.

Kit leaned on the counter next to the kettle, not turning it on though, in favour of not scaring Charles.

"Okay thank you. Thank you to the team, I'll see you later." Charles said ending the phone call and my god he looked so sad.

"Fuck!" He snapped throwing his phone onto the couch. He gripped his hair tightly before he started pacing the living room.

"Charles?" Kit said softly and his head snapped up. He stared at her for a few seconds before shaking his head.

"Hi Kit, you saw that didn't you?" Charles asked nervously, pausing his pacing.

"uh yeah, are you okay?" Kit was genuinely concerned Charles wasn't the type of guy to get fazed by things often.

"No." Charles sighed, "I fucked up massively yesterday and broke the gearbox, so I can't race."

Kit was slightly shocked by this info, she knew he had crashed in qualifying but she didn't know it was that bad.

"It's my home race and I was meant to be starting Pole, guess the Monaco curse is a real thing." Charles laughed but it was a bitter sound.

"Well this isn't any condolences but at least we can be sad together, I'm not racing either." Kit told him.

A small smile grew on his face, "maybe we could convince Pierre to not race either."

"What!" Pierre exclaimed, poking his head out of the guest room. "Calamar just because your not racing, who says I can't."

"Right, Sorry." Charles turned serious before they all burst out laughing.

Kit was glad they could take Charles' mind off his DNS even if it was only for a few minutes.

After Charles had told Pierre about his misfortune they preceded to finish getting ready to head to the track.

They decided to walk to the track as Charles' only lived a few minutes away. Unfortunately they underestimated how many fans were roaming the streets and quickly got surrounded.

It then took then longer than it should've to reach the circuit as they were taking photos and signing autographs along the way.

After checking in Kit left the boys first with a wave, as Williams were at the start of the Pitlane.

Kit waved to a few of her Mechanics plus Luke before dumping her bag in her Driver's room.

She then made her way to the hospitality where she was meeting George for Breakfast.

They hadn't spent some time together in a while and Kit thought it was a good idea to catch up with her teammate.

When she got to hospitality Kit immediately went over to the counter to pick what she wanted for Breakfast. In the end she chose, 2 hash browns, some bacon and a couple pastries.

Once she gathered her food Kit made her way over to the table George was sitting at, scrolling on his phone.

"Howdy partner." She greeted plonking her plate on the table, "ready for today?"

George looked up from his phone and sat it on the table, "I guess, I am kinda have to be when you left me without back up." He joked.

"Well sorry, maybe you can actually be the lead driver for once instead of me scoring all the points." Kit sarcastically remarked, digging into her food.

"Maybe I will." George drank some of his coffee, which made Kit immediately realise she had forgotten to grab a cup of coffee herself.

"God dang it." She muttered to herself.

"What's wrong?" George wondered.

"I forgot to grab coffee." Kit explained.

"So? Just go grab one now." George shrugged.

"I can't, it don't feel right grabbing one now." Kit protested.

"Alright then."

They continued talking through out their breakfast, trying to forget about racing and talk about different things, even though they were at the track right now.

Kit had just finished the last of her bacon when her phone pinged she wiped her hands on a napkin and looked at the notification. It was a message from Charles asking where she was and if she wanted to meet up.

Kit quickly replied yes and turned her focus back to George. "Breakfast was lovely but I'm afraid I have to go now." George told her.

"Alright mate, thanks for catching up with me." Kit thanked him as she pushed her chair in. "I'll see ya later."

They shared a quick hug and then went their separate ways. George was heading back into the garage and Kit was on her way to find Charles.

On the way Kit sent another message to Charles asking him exactly where he was. While she was typing Kit did her usual trick of not watching where she was going and ran into someone.

"Is running into me your speciality." Pierre joked as he stepped back and placed his hands on Kit's shoulders.

"Hmm I suppose yeah." Kit smiled, "but now that I have found you I'd like a coffee please."

Pierre rolled his eyes but agreed none the less. "You are lucky you ran into me, at the one time of day, I don't have anything planned."

"Sweet thank you! I'll take a mocha please." Kit cheered.

She followed Pierre over to the garage and stood leaning against the wall while she waited for him to return. Kit waved to a few fans who were already starting the queue up on balconies and in the pit lane.

Someone coughed behind her and Kit turned around to see Pierre holding her drink in his hands. "Here you are madam." He presented with a flourish.

"Thank you." Kit accepted the drink gratefully. She then stood on her tippy toes and kissed his cheek. Kit swore she heard screams from a few fangirls. "Text me later, what you want me to do." She gave him a salute and left to go find Charles.

She found him hiding in a corner of the Ferrari hospitality, sitting in a chair looking out the window. He seemed deep in thought so she sat down in the chair opposite him as quietly as she could.

Kit let him zone back into the world in his own time but he still jumped nonetheless when he finally realised that she was sitting across from him.

"Kit, hi! You scared me." Charles greeted.

"Of course I did." Kit rolled her eyes at him jokingly. "Now why were you so impatient for me to come see you, I have better things to do, like watch the Formula 2 race."

Well I brought board games and I needed someone to play with me." Charles reached down and grabbed the games off the shelf underneath the table. He had Uno, a pack of cards and connect four.

"I take back my previous statement." Kit said immediately after she realized what games he had, "you are going down Percival."

They played Uno first, a game in which Kit was not only highly good at but also highly competitive.

"Aha I win!" Charles cheered placing his last card down on the pile (a plus 4).

"Hey! That's cheating you can't place down an irregular card last." Kit called him out.

"Chill out Kitrina." Charles ruffled her hair up and she huffed.

She was about to retaliate when she noticed someone had turned the F2 feature race on and the race was about to start.

Kit immediately turned her full focus to the Tv as the lights began to go out.

"What do you want to play next Kit?" Charles asked.

"Shut up." Kit shushed him. She was staring at the tv intently as she fingers crossed, hoping her favourite drivers would make it through the first lap safely.

Kit let out a sigh of relief when the first lap was completed and then she focussed her attention back on Charles.

"Why do you care so much about Formula 2 anyway?" Charles wondered.

"Because it's the next group of people who could take my seat." Kit joked. "But nah seriously I only watch it for two drivers, just like how you only watch formula 3 for Arthur."

"Makes sense." Charles nodded,"who are the drivers you watch it for then?"

"Uh Oscar Piastri, obviously and Liam Lawson, they're both pretty talented."

"Have you met them before?" Charles wondered while he reached off to the side to grab the pack of cards.

"No, I have not."

"Well let's go exploring later and you can meet them." Charles smirked.

"Noooo." Kit whined, "do you know how embarrassing that would be to go up to them and explain that, I a formula driver supports the people that could take their seat."

"Okay yeah I see what you mean." Charles sympathized, "want to play Blackjack? Loser has to tell an embarrassing story from their childhood."

"Alrighty I am prepared to hear all your embarrassing stories." Kit challenged.

In the end, Kit had to tell more stories than Charles (although she reckoned his were funnier than hers). He especially laughed at the stories on how she broke her wrist ( she just really needed the toilet, okay?).

After playing Blackjack for a while ,the pair went to grab lunch from hospitality. Kit ordered her usual salad and Charles ordered a burger. They ate lunch quickly as they had to do media work and then be back at their respective garages in time for the race.

Kit watched the F1 race with mixed emotions. She was happy, sad and concerned.

She was happy she could still watch the race from the pitlane, sad that she had to watch from the pitlane and concerned that there was going to be a crash, this was Monaco after all.

Kit was staring at the data aimlessly when the sky sports camera guy came over to the Williams pitwall. She smiled and waved at the camera, trying to fake being completely happy when all she wanted to do was go back to bed.

In the end, Max won the Prestigious  Monaco race. As soon as he crossed the line, Kit ran to find Lily to ask her if she could go stand with the Redbull team. Lily seeing her best friend's excitement agreed and Kit ran off to Parc ferme. When she got there she was just going to stand behind the Red bull workers but a few ushered her to the front.

Max jumped out of the car and sat on top to pose for the camera's. The whole Red bull team erupted in cheers. He then climbed down and ran to the team.

He hugged a few team members before he found Kit. She wrapped him in a tight hug. "Your here Kit!" Max sounded surprised.

"Of course, I wasn't missing this." She removed her arms from around him to bonk him on the head. "I have to go now but I'll see you later."

Max nodded and then moved onto the next team members. Kit meanwhile turned around to head back to Williams.

She skipped down the Pitlane, happy that her day had gone better than expected.
