Chapter 2: Seraphina

Seraphina exhaled. Sweat beaded her face as she laid in her bedroom in the Kang Complex. She had survived another day. Another day of espionage. Another day of being the famous Ethan Kang's apprentice. Another day of life itself.

But what life am I living, she thought. What was the meaning of her life if she wasn't living it as her own? Sometimes she just wanted to quit this job, quit this fake identity. She blamed Parinjaier for taking away her teenhood.

She had lived in Parinjaier for most of her life, a life that was much more enjoyable than this one. And she would never forget the day it all started...

Dear Seraphina Price and family,

You have been nominated to take a series of academic tests for gifted children. Only the brightest take part. These assessments must be taken by July 16th, 2132. This assessment will appear on your dashboard tomorrow.

Regards,

Parinjaier Department of Information

Seraphina, of course, took the test. A week later, she got another letter:

Dear Seraphina Price and Family,

This is strictly confidential. As you have passed the first part of the test, we will move on to the next phase, which will be interviewing. You do not need to prepare anything. We will be at your home at 7:30 tomorrow morning.

Regards,

Parinjaier Department of Information

Seraphina barely remembered the interview and other assessments. After that, more officials had met with her. They told her about their plan: they were looking for spies of certain descriptions, one of which was a 12-year-old girl. They made her an offer: work as a spy for them. She and her family would be ensured the best living quality and security, and her father (who had a rare but fatal disease) would be cured, free of charge. It was an offer she couldn't refuse.

After that, she had special spy training classes after school, where she learned self-defense, weaponry, and intelligence gathering skills, along with other things.

It was a few months later when they launched an attack on a wealthy neighborhood in Xanythar. The plan was to destroy critical Xanythar infrastructure and sneak in as many spies as possible.

Parinjaier bombed the power system used to light the city and power the communications, and permanently crippled the identification systems using an incredibly powerful E.M.P, allowing the spies to enter the nation unnoticed. She then took her place by a dumpster, as a whimpering-crying young girl. Of course, she didn't expect Ethan Kang himself to stumble upon her.

So here she was, six years later, still spying for the Parinjaier government. Things were getting riskier. Everywhere she went, haunting images would pass through her mind: them figuring out she was a spy, dragging her away from Ethan; being held in a cell and tortured mercilessly until death; and, if she was alive, Parinjaier disowning her when they found out she had failed. Her family would be mocked and ridiculed for having a defecto daughter.

She was living on the tip of a knife. Ethan seemed to suspect something was up.  When she was meeting with the board members, everything felt too tense, too rehearsed. The board members were hiding something from her and Ethan, Project Whiteout, they called it, and Sera couldn't afford to let Ethan know. Her job was to gather information, and Sera certainly didn't want to be Ethan's criminal accomplice.

She would have to tell Parinjaier about Project Whiteout, along with the sudden arming of Xanythar.

    Seraphina logged onto Ethan's computer and typed the board meeting file into the keyboard; Project Whiteout, 2130/02/10. Suddenly, a prompt flashed across the screen;

ACCESS DENIED

Seraphina groaned in frustration, snapping the computer shut. She wasn't going to get clearance for the project anytime soon. She was going to have to do some real spy work.
