Chapter 38 - All Roads Lead to the Same Place

After spending time with Charmaine and Charlene, the series' author welcomes the next set of guests. Another pair of twins who are prominent across the Manuel Novicio Lacuesta University campus.

Rachel Arianne and Reagan Aldrich Madrigal are best known for their athletic skills and upbeat personality. They compete in various sports events and won awards. Another thing unique about them is that they are best friends with the Flower Four (commonly dubbed F4), composed of seniors Andi Garduce, Lei Belleza, Brei Mendoza and Hazel Salonga. Because for two particular reasons, Rachel and Andi are in a relationship while Reagan succeeds as a new F4 leader.

Manita created a local take on the popular Asian drama Boys Over Flowers as a portmanteau of her romantic moments with four handsome childhood friends Gunkan, Natee, Arthit and Pluem, whom she calls her very own F4.

Manita and Rachel share the same characteristics common for ordinary students in a high school story. Manita remembers how she received a red card that was placed in Rachel's old locker.

"Sorry," she humorously rants. "Visitors by appointment only."

"I was just here," Rachel wondered. "Remember, I invited you and your friends to my cafe."

"Oh my gosh. Are you the famous swimmer Rachel Madrigal? What a grand privilege."

"You guessed it right," she positively agrees.

"Apologies for the delay," Mind then asks. "What year are you in now?"

"Fifth-year college. I'm about to graduate in a few weeks,"

"What degree?" she again asks.

"Technical Engineering," Rachel mentions her degree.

"I'm senior. Final year of high school. I will graduate tomorrow afternoon."

"Daebak," she gladly congratulates. "Congrats on your graduation. Chukahaeja."

"Kamsahamneda," Mind thankfully replies.

"School life in M.N.L. University is awesome. Do you have wonderful memories of this school?"

"A lot," she briefly said. "My high school life is a rocky road of bumps and broken concrete."

"What do you mean 'broken concrete'?" Rachel curiously asks.

"Like what happened between me and my uncle when he was put to jail,"

******

The day comes for the court to decide the results of the twin sisters' estafa case against their uncle Roderick. Many witnesses attended and testified against him including Kaew, Roderick's own daughter, and Olan, his former advisor who now sides with the common law. Therefore, he is sentenced to twenty years of imprisonment.

At the Central District prison, Aurora convinces her husband to change but he refuses to abide.

"Yeobo," she amply said. "We just wanna let you know that we'll be here for you."

"Appa," their daughter Kaew requests.

"What are you talking about?" he lays his frustration. "You're the one who put me to jail. You betrayed me."

"Roderick," his spouse convinces him. "You have to understand. I did this because I want you to change."

"How dare you say that! After all I have done to salvage my name, my work, my reputation, just to give you both a deserved life? And what would you gain from it in exchange? To have me jailed for twenty years. To rot me in this prison to die."

"Eomma..." Kaew gently bids.

"You wasted my life," Roderick blames everything on her. "You destroyed our family. How could you do this to your own husband. This is all your fault!"

"Geurae," Aurora then admits. "It's all my fault."

"Then why am I here? Why not you?"

"Because I repented for all my sins," she confesses her wrongdoings. "I don't see you're realizing that. Yes, you're right. You did everything to provide for us. But at what cost? Kaew saw both her parents doing bad things. Is this what you want? To let her grow up thinking that doing wrong is right? I can't live with the thought that this is the life you want us to give her. I would rather be poor and selfish than to be a bad parent."

Thus, Aurora and Kaew leave the visiting room in tears. However, some inmates are not friendly to Roderick and made a living hell out of him. Accompanied by Paquito, Manita visits her uncle.

"What sense, the both of you," he vents his frustration towards them. "When I got imprisoned here in this prison, you got the nerve to visit."

"Mind asked me to accompany her," Paquito informs. "She has something to explain."

"Why are you here? To cheer in the face of one's misery? Finally, you got what you wanted. Enjoy whatever you want, that's great. Your twin sister, why isn't she here with you?"

"Joesonghamnida," Mind apologizes. "I'm really sorry it has come to this."

"Sorry?" Roderick chuckles at the expanse. "You're here to apologize? It's too late, I'm already in jail. My family has been destroyed. You got your money back. What else more do you want?"

"Anniya. I'm sorry because this had to happen. Everyone was involved in this. I'm sorry because they have to suffer. And despite everything you did, your wife and daughter still love you."

"You have no sense of respect," he frankly replies. "After I accepted you in my family, this is the gratitude you want to express?"

"Don't get me wrong, ahjeossi," Mind then explains. "Thank you very much. Thank you for taking everything away from me. If you have not done this, I wouldn't find out who my real family is. I wouldn't have learned to value the people most important to me. I hope someday you may come to realize that. In this prison, you must learn to not push people away and not to blame others for your wrongdoings."

"Guard. Bring me to my cell."

"This is the only way you can change," Paquito then convinces her. "To forgive your own niece."

However, Roderick refuses to listen and goes back to his prison cell. After visiting her uncle, Manita and Paquito approach Naomi, who decides to wait outside rather than going inside.

"Mind," she wonders.

"I wanted to mock him, seongsaengnim," the young girl bursts into tears. "Finally, he will pay for all the sins he has done to me. But why? In the end, I still get hurt?"

"I know in your heart that whatever happens, he is still your relative,"

"Why is he always like that?" she emotionally thought. "In the end, he doesn't want to admit his mistakes. How can I forgive someone like that?"

"There are many radical people in this world," Paquito gives an advice. "They chose to be blind to the truth without realizing their flaws. Anger is not the solution. It is mercy and compassion."

"That's exactly what my twin sister would say. But where is Meen now? I thought we're all in this fight together. Do you know something?"

"Mind," Naomi gently answers.

"Harabeojji," she insists. "Tell me. I can take it. Just tell me the truth."

"My child," Paquito gently reminds her. "You must calm down. Regina and Burnham are most worried for you. We also worry for you, too."

"But you have to understand the truth," Naomi also reminds.

"What happened to my twin?" Mind simply asks.

"Mind," she finally explains. "This is something very concerning. Meen has a lupus and she is confined at the hospital in a state of coma."

"Lupus?"

"Burnham and Regina are there to stay beside her," Paquito then confirms. "They will not leave her until she fully recovers."

"Is she in a state of coma?" Mind wonders.

"Mind," Naomi gently answers. "Do not worry too much."

"What hospital? The Royal Beaumont? I have to go visit her."

The couple decides to accompany Manita to the hospital to visit her twin sister Meennara.

"Kami-sama," the young girl requests. "You wouldn't let anything bad happen to her, right?"

Quietly they enters her room and the attending nurse provide them garments. Upon approaching her twin sister, Manita quietly grieves for her.

"Mind," Regina gently calls.

"I want to talk to Meen's doctor," she amply said.

"I'll call him right away," Burnham agrees.

The physician confirms that failure in the kidneys caused a huge effect on Meennara's system and requires the process of dialysis.

"Is it necessary for her to go through dialysis to recover?" the young girl asks.

"We will resume her dialysis only if she awakes," he added. "But while still unconscious, we are giving her the necessary medication."

"How long will she be in that state?"

"I really can't say," the physician sadly confirms. "Hopefully, her system may respond to the medicine's effects so she can recover."

Manita quietly watches the nurse attend to her twin sister Meennara.

"Mind," Naomi warmly said. "If you need anything, we're right here. It's alright to cry so that you will express the pain you feel. To warm up your soul and find inner peace of mind."

"I don't wanna cry anymore," she wipes off her tears. "I shouldn't weep because if I do, it means I'm losing myself. I won't give up yet, sensei. Because I know in my heart that my twin sister can survive. We will get through this. I know Meen will fight. Me too. I will not give up on her."

Thus, Manita requests God through prayer to help her twin sibling recover from her illness.

"God," she quietly asks. "I remember my prayer when my father was dying. You answered my prayer by giving me my dear sister. Please don't take her away from me. I know in my heart that you will heal her. I will wait for the time when she finally sees the light in her eyes. I will share her every good news I have."

"I remembered a tragedy in Korea that claimed the lives of young dreamers," the author recounts her experiences. "It reminded me of my father's last moments. I prayed to God hoping He will still save him. But at the last minute before my prayer is answered, he said a few words and breathed his last. That was a life-changing event for me."

(NOTE: Manita refers to the 2014 Sewol ferry incident that claimed the lives of around 300 passengers including 250 high school students.)

Meanwhile, Arthit invites his friend Pluem to review for the final exams.

"Eomma," he requests his mother. "Can I invite my friend to review?"

"Sure," Lorielle truly accepts. "Anything I will do for my baby."

"Don't call me baby. I'm a grown up now."

"But deep inside, you're still my favorite child," she humbly adds. "As do all your siblings."

"Annyeong, eomeoni," Pluem simply greets.

"You boys are kicking for the finals?"

"Of course," he gladly informs. "It's our last kick-off for the school year. Moving-up is next week."

"My dear," Lorielle replies. "How I love to see my two favorite boys march the stage. Have you decided where to study next school year?"

"Me and Pluem decide to continue there," her son Arthit confirms. "We'll study together until we graduate high school."

"You mean two years of senior high?"

"That's right," he simply adds.

"A good answer," his mother advises. "When you achieve the higher ranks, your classmates and teachers will be proud of you. At the end of the day, all sacrifices will be paid worth."

At the hospital's serving room, Manita and her guardians have a dinner.

"Atty. Espiritu's already convicted," Burnham informs the news.

"Mmmm," the young girl nods.

"Mind," Regina simply asks. "Gwaenchana?"

"Arasseo,"

"Your sister will recover soon," Burnham faithfully promises. "The doctor said that her system is going well. I believe that God makes miracles."

"Geurae," his spouse agrees. "There's a chance that Meen will wake up anytime given she has utmost faith in God. Maybe later or tomorrow."

"I'm positive that my twinnie will recover," Mind positively said.

"The doctor confirms that we're waiting for her condition to stabilize. Afterwards, we'll plan on earning funds for her kidney transplant."

"Me and Regina are listed recipients in the N.K.T.I," Burnham then explains. "But there are others who are happy to provide. When your sister wakes up, we'll decide who will be a potential donor."

(NOTE: National Kidney Transplant Institute)

"I know you've been taking care of Meen," Mind expresses gratitude. "Kamsahamneda, Burnham abeoji, Regina eomeoni. Now that I know about this, I will be the one to take care of her."

While Natee reviews for the final exams and Tetsuya settling family payments, Shiro comes playing, making noise to disturb them.

"Shiro," Tetsuya reminds him. "Can you minimize playing? You're disturbing us."

"I'm not yet graduating," he replies. "Natee has a exam tomorrow. Ours is next week."

"If mother's not around, you don't wanna study. Don't you have homework to complete?"

"Aigoo," Natee frankly replies. "You two are disturbing me. I'll scold you to eomma."

"Fine," Shiro then listens. "What time will eomma come home?"

"Why would you ask? So that you will continue play?"

"Anniya," he answers. "Because she and appa left this morning. Why is eomma still not here?"

"They'll arrive home later," Tetsuya simply said. "I received word, they're still at the hospital."

"Wae geurae? Why are they at the hospital?"

"Settle down," he then explains. "There's nothing bad to mom. We should not worry for her."

"What are they doing there?" Natee wonders.

"They're staying. They accompanied Mind to the hospital. They went to visit because Mind's twin sister Meen was rushed to the hospital."

"Mworago?" Natee surprisingly asks. "What's her illness?"

"She has lupus," Tetsuya confirms. "It's a normal illness but she'll recover soon. When she recovers, eomma and appa will come home."

******

The next morning, Manita reads some pages on lupus and thought of a brilliant idea.

"Abeoji, eomeoni," she happily confirms. "There's a possibility Meen's sickness will be managed. As soon as she wakes up, I'll help her so that her disease will not worsen."

"Eodisseo numanya?" Regina calls as she is about to leave.

"Ora! I have found the perfect solution to help my dear sister. Shinzou wo sasageyo!"

(NOTE: It's a popular catchphrase used in the hit Japanese manga series Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). It means 'ready to go for battle')

Going back to her sister's room, the F4 (Gunkan, Natee, Arthit and Pluem) informed Manita through text messages that they have a final exam.

"Do you want us to inform Ms. Maneja to give you special dates for the final exams so that you won't have hassle tomorrow?" they texted.

"You know," Mind shares a wonderful story. "I read an article that if you make coma patients listen to their favorite song, they will wake up with smiling faces. So I'm thinking I should make you listen to our favorite song."

She plays a comfortable song called 365 Nichi no Kamihikouki (365 Days of Paper Airplanes) by P-Pop girl group MNL48 (Manila Forty-Eight).

Tumingin sa langit ng umaga / Sa araw kung tawagin ay ngayon / Umaasang malalagpasan ng may ngiti / Tahimik na hinihiling

"I know you're listening to this song, eonnie," "Even if you choose not to speak, I know you can feel that I'm always here for you.

Kung minsan pumapatak ang ulan / Ngunit luha ay umaapaw / Mga araw na 'di umaayon sa'ting plano / Bukas, pagsisipagan ko

"Do you believe in miracles? Because I do. You are a miracle given to me by God. You're my twin sister. My family. My answered prayer.

Pangarap na'king inaasam / May isa pang ako na malaya / Nagagawa lahat aking ninanais / Ito ang aking hangarin

"I know that soon you will wake up and I know when you wake up, you'll check on me. I assure you, eonnie, that I will focus on my studies.

"After the finals, you will be my only priority. Remember me, dear sister. You used to tell me that you will take care of me. Now, let me be the one. I'll take care of you. I promise."

"Sige, lumipad ka," she sings the final lyrics. "Subukang lumipad. Sige, lumipad ka. Subukang lumipad. Sige, lumipad ka. Subukang lumipad."

After spending time with her twin sister, Manita decides to study for the final exams.

"Seongsaengnim," she humbly said. "I have to go home now. I need to study for the finals."

"Mind," Naomi replies. "I'll ask your advisers to give you a special schedule."

"No need. This is what my sister wants. For me to focus on my studies. I don't want Meen to be disappointed if I failed her."

"Why would she be upset?" she curiously asks.

"If she wakes up and finds that I skipped the finals, she'll be very upset," Mind thought. "I know she's doesn't want me to be absent. She does the same, she wants to study school, too."

"Mind, if you don't feel like going, it's alright. You don't have to force yourself."

"I can, seongsaengnim," she humbly decides. "I must go now. Take the final exams so that I will prove to eonnie that I'm still at my top. And to tell her that I never lose hope in my studies."

"If that's what you want, then your uncle will accompany you," Naomi then agrees.

"Kamsahamneda. Don't worry, I know that my dear sister will wake up. God will do everything to wake her up."

Once again, the four boys compete each other who will be part of the final exam rankings.

"Minna!" Gunkan officially declares. "As of today, I'll be part of the Senbatsu list."

"The Top 16 students?" Arthit wonders.

"Of course. And I'll be placed next to where Mind should be. Anyone else volunteer?"

"I'm game for it," Pluem confidently agrees. "We'll go head-to-head for the Top 3 rank."

"I bet you would,"

"If I aced up in major subjects, I'll take that high spot ahead of you," Arthit also brags.

"Dream high, province boy," Pluem cheers for his friend.

"Gentlemen," Natee humbly requests. "If you must agree, I'm the most deserving guy. I'll be at Top 2 lest Mind becomes a Center again."

"You proved your chance already," his friend Gunkan replies. "Give chance to others."

"I'm gonna make it equals then,"

"As you say so," he accepts his challenge. "May the best man win."

The four boys turn to competition and set their eyes on the highest rank of the list.

Meanwhile, present-day, Manita inquires Rachel for advice on love life and commitment.

"I have problems with love live," she humbly asks. "Can you help me?"

"Geurae," Rachel accepts. "I'm around to help. What is it?"

"I've four guys who have a crush on me,"

"You have a crush on four boys?" she curiously thought.

"Mmmm," Mind positively nods.

"They look like F4, right?"

"Sort of," she then describes. "They're also my childhood friends."

"It must be hard getting tugged between them," Rachel wonders.

"But I don't want to fall in love yet. I want to study college and fulfill my parents' wishes,"

"Same feelings," she recalls her experiences. "You looked like me when I studied here on my first day. Everything was whack until I met the F4. I despise them at first but now I understand their stories well. They may look cool, handsome, arrogant but deep inside, they have a passionate heart."

"Geurae," Mind humbly agrees. "They changed me and, in turn, I definitely changed them."

******

One evening, June and her friends visit Natee, offering advanced congratulatory gifts.

"Here's a tip for our last customer," they gladly offer. "We delivered many as soon as possible."

"Thanks," he expresses gratitude.

"Is Mind around?"

"It's been two days I haven't seen her," her friend Nam-joon asks. "Did you two quarrel again?"

"Anniya," Natee denies.

"Noona is in the hospital," his brother Shiro confirms. "Eomma, appa will stay with her."

"Wae geurae?" Bo-young then asks.

"She's sick,"

"Dear heavens," Namjoon reacts surprisingly. "What sickness does she have?"

"That's a joke," his friend answers. "We all got sick before but eventually feel well."

"Aigoo, Boyoung-ah. Now is not the time to say any jokes. Mind will get upset."

Naomi turns puzzled when Manita asks God for a special request to help Meennara recover.

"Yeobo," she wonders. "Mind spoke again of God. That He will be the one to awake her sister."

"What are you then afraid off?" Paquito asks.

"What if Meen does not wake up? What if her illness worsens? You know if one has lupus, they cannot recover."

"Yeobo," he replies. "Your way of thinking is beyond the line."

"But we know that nothing good always happens in life," Naomi simply explains. "It's better to be aware than expect the worst. I don't want the kid to expect but in the end, get disappointed."

"Don't speak like that,"

"I'm sorry but this is too much of the bad things happening to her," Naomi further adds. "God is not that merciless to give her another problem."

The couple went to pick up Manita.

"I'll go ahead," the young girl bids.

"Geurae," Regina then agrees. "Are you sure it's alright I cannot accompany you home?"

"Anniya. I'll stay at home to review for the finals. I'll come back soon as exams are over."

"We'll be the ones to accompany Mind," Naomi humbly agrees.

"I'll take her to school then come here to take care of Meen," Paquito also requests.

"Arasseo," Regina bids the young girl. "Take care of yourself."

"I put my number on speed dial," Mind simply advises. "If there's emergency, just press one."

"Don't worry, Mind," Burnham agrees. "We'll call you immediately."

"Inform me if you have an update on eonnie, or if there's improvement,"

"I'll take note," her aunt Regina said.

Manita departs home with Paquito and Naomi while Burnham and Regina stay behind. At home, June and her friends come to visit.

"Annyeongsumnida," Mind simply greets.

"Mind," Namjoon simply informs. "We heard that your twin sissy has an illness. So we rushed here to inform you. Eonnie gwaenchana?"

"She's under observation right now because she's in a coma,"

"Mworago?!" the two girls gasp in surprise. "What coma?"

"I didn't expect something bad like that happens," June surprisingly thought.

"You know," Bo-young then explains. "If you're busy taking care of Meen, then I'll manage your bakeshop and laundry."

"And if you need snacks to bring at the hospital, I'll provide. Promise, I made it safe and sound."

"Arasseo," Namjoon also requests. "If you need someone to guard the house, lemme do the honors. If bad guys break in, I have the power of Deku and Todoroki on my side."

(NOTE: Two main characters from the popular manga series Boku no Hero Academia.)

"You sure are eager," Paquito then replies. "I hear Naomi is reminding you to review for the final exams. Do you have finals at school?"

"Arasseo, harabeojji," Namjoon happily said.

"Calling him harabeojji as courtesy?" Natee thought. "Are you really this generous?"

"Geurae," Mind appreciates. "Thank you for coming. I really appreciate your offer to help but I have to review for the exams."

"Are you serious?" her friend June wonders. "Can you still review?"

"Of course, there's much time to prepare,"

"Is it because Meen's illness might worsen?" Bo-young again asks.

"Chinggus," Mind then replies. "I'm alright. I believe that eonnie will recover soon. So do not worry too much for us."

Going home, the three friends are worried for Manita especially that she has to take care of Meennara while reviewing for the final exams.

"Do you think she'll be okay?" Bo-young wonders. "If she said alright, then yes."

"Are you convinced?" her friend Nam-joon asks.

"If it was me, no. I passed through the first trial but the harder second, I'm not sure. Even if the landlady is strict, if something bad happens, I would moan really hard."

"We're strong if we press hard," June faithfully said. "Like a nail. No matter how sharp, it will be useless if you don't pound it with a hammer."

"What words of wisdom," Namjoon replies. "You visualize the hammer and nail story."

"In my opinion, Mind is a brave person. She has went through a lot so I know how she's ready to face bigger challenges."

Paquito supervises the two reviewing for the final exams. Manita patiently waits for Regina to confirm update on Meennara's treatment.

"Don't worry," he simply informs. "I'll tell Naomi you're reviewing patiently."

"I've listed the formulae you will need for review," Natee explains. "Seems you're texting Regina eomeoni for five minutes straight."

"I just wanna make sure eonnie's alright," Mind answers. "Specially when I'm not around there. Anyway, let's brainstorm."

"Aigoo, you're getting distracted again,"

"Regina answers messages fast," she adds. "But later, something bad happens to eonnie. I have to call eomeoni."

Manita tries to call Regina but does not reply.

"She's not answering," she becomes worried. "I have to go to the hospital now."

"Mind," Natee wonders as she is about to leave. "Ige mwo haneun geoya?"

"Harabeojji! I have to go back to the--"

The young girl receives a text from Regina.

"Apologies, Mind," she replies. "I put it on silent mode. But don't worry, your sister's alright."

Ermengarde arrives at the hospital to visit Meennara while at school, Manita rushes upstairs to the rooftop searching for God.

"Where are you?" she amply requests. "I know you're looking over her while I'm here at school. I'll come back at the hospital after this. Please guide my twin sister. I promise I'll do well in the finals so that I'll have good news to tell her."

The final exams commence and the school grounds are closed doors for the meantime. Students quietly answer their exam sheets in hopes of achieving a rank in the Top 48 list.

After a whole day of exams, everyone receives their papers full of marks and checks.

"Eonnie," Mind happily approaches.

"Eonnie," Kaew invites her. "Shall we have girls' bonding later?"

"Mianhae. I cannot come,"

"Why?" she wonders. "Exams are already finished. Is there something wrong?"

"Well..."

Manita explains to her cousin about Meennara's condition. Kaew gives a solemn prayer.

"I feel bad for your sister," she solemnly laments. "Hope she recovers soon."

"I'm willing to listen to your problems too, eonnie," Mind replies.

"My scores got lower. I keep thinking about appa. And I can't help but feel bad."

"I'm sorry," the young girl apologizes.

"It's not your fault," Kaew turns lonesome. "But what if I cannot be part of the moving-up?"

"Don't worry, you can still try again. I'm sure the professors will agree if you ask for a special project to make up for your scores."

"I guess," her cousin thought.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Mind wonders, looking at her expression.

"I do believe in you. You always fight and never lose hope even if bad things happen,"

"I get tired sometimes," she gives a powerful advice. "But seongsaengnim advise me before, it's not bad to get tired. You can gather strength but when you have enough, life goes on."

"But where do you get all that strength?" Kaew curiously asks. "Who gives you inspiration to continue in life?"

"I pray," Mind briefly explains. "God gives me hope. The strength I need. That He will not leave me. That He will not leave my twin sister. Soon, everything will be alright."

"In that case, I should start praying, too,"

"What are you going to pray for?" she wonders.

"I'll pray that we'll march together on the moving-up stage," Kaew simply requests.

Meanwhile, Aurora visits her husband at the prison visiting rooms, bringing food and letters in hopes that he will change his mind.

******

Back to present-day, Rachel wears a traditional barong dress with purple ruffles.

"Put this on," she brought one for Mind.

"Ige mwoya?" the young girl wonders.

"It's a barong dress. Tailored from the best weavers of Batangas, where I was born,"

"Do you occasionally wear it?"

"I wore it when I was a maid at Andi's house," she recounts her experiences. "I also wore it with Reagan at our high school prom."

"Your prom was fantastic," Mind describes. "Unlike yours, mine's got little problems,"

"Small problems come in simple solutions. Why don't you try it?"

Thus, Manita puts on the barong dress and it perfectly fits her.

"Jalsaenggyeotta," Rachel then comments. (It means beautiful in Korea.)

"I look a bit like Maria Clara," she wonders.

"More of a beauty queen,"

"Who is this Reagan you're referring?" she asks.

"He's my fraternal twin brother," Rachel briefly explains. "A baseball player and a confident student. He recently graduated management and is having internship at Andi's office."

"Reagan calls Andi his favorite idol, isn't it?"

"He's the one who trained him," she added. "Now he is an F4 leader, too."

"I have many friends who call me Little Mind," Mind answers. "Plainly because I'm short, cute and pretty."

"Did you usually climb at the rooftop and shout? Funny that short girls are easy to annoy."

"Not always," she simply adds. "I take time to view the metropolis before going to classes."

******

Early afternoon, the F4 accompany Manita to check their exam scores.

"Shancai," Gunkan happily informs. "I just wanna show you my scores."

"Perfection, Ah Si," she positively comments.

"Kamsahamneda,"

"You're smart if you improve well," Mind remarks.

"It helps if it takes a push of effort," he replies.

"Can I see my results?" Arthit comes to check the rankings.

"What?" Pluem then asks. "Did you pass any major subjects?"

"I make my own luck,"

"You're excited to find out your rank," he simply adds. "But to be honest, I'm three spots ahead."

"Are you sure?" his friend Arthit asks.

"Sure. Logic plus memory equals strategy,"

"So can I accompany you home?" Gunkan asks a small request.

"I have to go to the hospital," Mind gently refuses.

"Why? What's wrong?"

"My eonnie's sick," Mind gently said.

"Well," Arthit said. "If kami-oshi Meen is sick, then perhaps we'll visit her."

"Arasseo,"

"By the way," Pluem then inquires. "Where's her room? The main building or the annex?"

"Too many questions," Mind simply answers. "It's in the main building, fourth floor, room eight."

"Noted. We'll come visit her."

(NOTE: Manita deciphers the three clues that hint to P-Pop girl idol group MNL48.)

Arriving home, Kaew notices her mother looking plain sad.

"Eomma," she wonders. "Wae geurae?"

"I went to visit your father,"

"What happened? Did he receive my letters?"

"We never lose faith in him," Aurora said. "It's his choice not to face us. I feel hard."

"Eomma," Kaew gently explains. "Did you know eonnie Meen is in coma? But despite that, Mind is able to take the final exams. And she got high grades. She is so awesome because after what happened to her parents and now her twinnie Meen, she never gave up on her dream. Maybe you shouldn't give up on appa."

At the hospital, Manita informs her twin sister Meennara the good news.

"Eonnie," she speaks in a gentle voice. "Mannaseo bangaweo yo? Our friends are waiting for you. They miss you very much. Jebal nae il-eona. Here, I got high grades. Are you proud of me? So please, my dear sister, wake up. I need you to be with me when I become batch representative."

(NOTE: Il-eona means wake up in Korean.)

Finally, Meennara moves a finger, confirming that she's already in good condition.

"Arienai itsuno," Mind was surprised. "Did you just move? I can't believe God listened to your prayer. Right, I'll tell you more good stories to wake you up."

Ermengarde notices the interaction between the twins and was touched with emotions.

"Seonjang-nim," the young girl notices him.

"Look at the light," he describes. "Until now, when I almost thought of scolding you."

"Abeoji also chased harabeojji away,"

"I wasted so much time with my children," Ermengarde simply recounts. "I haven't seen Burnham for a long time; you, Regina and Meen. That's why I worked hard to remember those lost times. But fate is an ever-changing rhythm. In the short times I've been with my grandchild, soon it will take her away from me."

"I know Meen is fighting," Mind gladly answers. "Just now, I told her that I got high scores in the finals and suddenly she moved her fingers."

"Meen's waking up?"

"She didn't wake up yet," she added. "But I know she's listening. I can feel it. All you have to do now is be positive and make her feel like we're right beside her, waiting for her to wake up."

"You are a good person, Mind," Ermengarde commends her humility. "Indeed I have seen it. I deeply regret for what I did to you before. It's good that you and Meen are identical twins because you are alike and are kind people. Forgive me, Mind. I was troubled by anger before."

"Seonjang-nim. That doesn't matter anymore. What matters is we're here for twinnie Meen."

Meanwhile, Atty. Garrett confirms that Mordhau is now in custody by the police. The couple excitingly share the wonderful news to Manita.

"Seongsaengnim, harabeojji," the young girl happily said. "Eonnie responded to my story and the doctor confirms that she'll recover in a few hours. This is a good sign."

"That's wonderful news," Naomi answers. "We also have something good to tell you."

"What is it?"

"Mordhau's now in chains," she then confirms.

"As the gods will," Mind gratefully remarks. "Finally he's gonna pay for what he did. When's the scheduled arraignment for his case?"

"According to byeonhosa-nim, tomorrow is his turnover to the Central District Jail so that they will continue the hearing."

"Can we go check now?" she eagerly requests.

"Mind--"

"I want to see him, seongsaengnim!" Mind again insists. "I want to tell him that he will no longer escape again. He's going to die in jail."

"Mworago?!" Naomi surprisingly asks. "What are you ranting? Do you think if Meen hears them, will she be pleased at what you did?"

"Mind," Paquito said. "Let me and Naomi handle this. It's not right to face Mordhau again."

"Better if you should rest at home," Burnham firmly advises. "There's no available space for you to sleep here. Regina will accompany you home. Me and father will stay behind to guard."

"Burnham said right," Ermengarde added. "I'm sure your twin is in good hands."

"Abeoji," the young girl wonders. "What if eonnie suddenly wakes up and I'm not around?"

"Exactly," he then advises. "Do you want her to wake up then you'll get sick? You're pressuring yourself. Follow what the elders tell you."

Paquito and Naomi accompany Manita home. However, waiting delays the inevitable.

"I'm leaving," he approaches the young girl. "You haven't bid me yet."

"Joesonghamnida," she apologizes. "Surely I miss eonnie very much. If she was here with me, she would know what to do with Mordhau."

"At least when she wakes up, you'll have good news to surprise her,"

"Not just that," Mind explains. "In times like these, she would know the right things to say. It will relieve my emotion and know what's positive."

Aurora and Kaew arrive to visit Manita.

"Eonnie," the young girl informs. "I told eomma what happened to Meen,"

"We came from the hospital but you went home," her mother explains. "If you need anything, we're just here for you. You can finally trust us. After all, we're still a family."

"Kamsahamneda, ahjeomma," Mind expresses gratitude. "I really appreciate the gesture."

One gentle evening, Manita decides to sleep in her twin sister's room.

"I checked your room," Regina gently enters. "There was nothing. Then I found you here."

"Eomeoni," she humbly requests. "Can I sleep here? Even for two nights only?"

"Geurae. As long as you want. But don't stay up late, you have school tomorrow."

Hours pass, it was the breakthrough of morning.

"I miss talking to you, dear sister," Mind laments in her thoughts. "I really wish you were here."

Students fill up their clearances during the last week of the school year.

"Eonnie," Kaew happily calls.

"Kaew," Mind simply thought. "Don't you have a clearance."

"I have a few signatures left then I'm all cleared. I hope I get high scores so they will allow me for moving-up. Eonnie, gwaenchana?"

"Arasseo," the young girl replies. "I haven't slept well last night."

"Why?" her cousin thought.

"I'm having a dream," Mind interprets her dream. "I was following the straight path. At the end of the road, Mordhau is waiting for me with an evil grin. I hate this feeling. Worse of all, I hate him."

"Maybe you just had a bad night. But things will be alright. That's what I keep telling myself."

"I really hope so," she quietly agrees. "Until I see him suffering because of what he did to my parents. I won't rest quietly until it happens."

"Eonnie," Kaew curiously asks. "If you're strongly eager about it, why don't you request seongsaengnim to accompany you? Or can I request eomma to come with you?"

"Thanks for the concern. But I know they'll refuse,"

Meanwhile, the F4 completed their clearances and submit to the faculty room.

"Guys," Naomi approaches them. "Do you know where Mind is?"

"I texted her but she does not reply," her son Natee informs.

"Aren't you supposed to go along and complete your clearances?"

"We fully marked our clearances and submit to the faculty," Arthit shows his clearance form.

"Did you complete all signatures?" Naomi then asks. "There's around thirty names."

"We went to every office," Pluem confirms. "There's a line of students waiting to sign their clearances so they put up time schedules."

"About Mind, have you seen her?"

"She must have went ahead," Natee guesses. "Probably she's working on the yearbook."

"Call her now," his mother urges. "Your father's waiting at the parking area."

"Arasseo,"

"Jisoo just texted," Gunkan informs his friends. "We have to work on for the yearbook."

"I thought you're going home," his friend wonders.

"No," Pluem then informs. "I'll stay behind. Haneul asked me to compose a poem to be recited for the moving-up ceremony."

"Would you go ahead? I'll check if Mind is around."

"We can worry her later," Arthit invites his friends. "My club-mates are assembling a collage of pictures. If you're willing to help, come."

"Arasseo," Natee then accepts. "I'll rendezvous with the guys."

Instead of going home, the F4 stay to co-operate with students for the yearbook. Manita, on the other hand, drives alone to the hospital.

"Who's with you?" Burnham simply asks.

"Myself only," the young girl said. "I drive my own car."

"Do you have a driver's license?"

"Ahjeossi taught me to drive," Mind simply recalls. "Anyway, how's my twin sister?"

"Still-water form," Burnham answers.

Manita enters her twin sister Meennara's room.

"Eonnie," she says a few words. "I know you promised that you'll be the one to handle our cases. But I promise, too, from now on, I'll be the one to take care of you. I will continue our fight. Ahjeossi is arrested, now all I have to do is deal with Mordhau. I'l make sure that he will pay and suffer for what he did to our family."

The young girl gathers courage to face Mordhau.

"Eodisseo?" they wonder. "Do you want to have snacks with us at the cafeteria?"

"I have somewhere to go," she bids for a while. "This is a special appointment."

"Do you want me to come?"

"Anni," Mind simply refuses. "I know how to drive. It's only a few minutes from here. I'll come back afterwards."

"Soll ma," Burnham calls as she departs. "Eodisseo numanya?!"

The young girl starts the engine of her car and drives to the Central District station.

"Yeoboseyo," Naomi then calls. "Did Mind just went there at the hospital?"

"She came just now," Burnham informs. "She drove herself by car,"

"Or maybe she wants to see her twin sister at the hospital," Paquito simply guesses.

"Can you contact to Mind?"

"Mind said she has an appointment," he wonders. "I don't know where she's going or what she'll do there. But she'll come back later."

"Send regards if you see her," Naomi replies.

"Yeobo, our van's missing,"

"Mwoya?" she surprisingly thought. "Did Mind just drive it on her own?"

"It'll be easy to track her through GPS," Paquito calls a taxi. "Let's go find her."

The couple went to the Central District station where Manita is looking for Mordhau. However, the police attendant refuses to let her pass without an adult's consent but she insists. Paquito and Naomi arrive to fetch her.

"Seongsaengnim," Mind was surprised. "Eotteokkhae?"

"Are you Ma'am Naomi Takahashi?" the attendant simply asks.

"I am," Naomi answers. "Thanks for your consideration. We're worried for this kid."

"She keeps annoying me that she wants to meet Mr. Velasco. I explained that we cannot assist minors without an adult's consent."

"Stubborn weed," she pulls the young girl's arm. "Come, we have much to talk at home."

"Ige mwohanya jishiya?" Mind frankly insists. "Seongsaengnim, I'm staying here to face Mordhau. I will not go unless I see him."

"Don't be so hard-headed,"

"I'm sorry but I will not leave until I see him," she replies.

"So you're forcing to do what you want?" Naomi then argues.

"Geurae. Which is one short minute with him."

"For what?" she openly asks. "What are you trying to do? You're wasting your own time."

"You don't understand," Mind explains the reason. "It's not you who lost a family."

"Geurae. But it doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want,"

"I just wanna talk to him," she yet again insists.

"And you forgot to bid Burnham before you left?" Naomi yells her frustration. "You said you'll only be here? Look what's happening to you. Who in this shitting earth taught you to lie?"

"Lie? You also lied to me about my twin sister."

"GEURAE!" she loudly snaps. "DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! I WILL NOT STOP YOU FROM DOING SO!"

Naomi decides to leave the young girl open space to think clearly.

"Harabeojji," she then insists. "I just wanna talk to Mordhau."

"Need is different from want," Paquito gives an advice. "Like what Naomi says, you cannot force to do everything you want. Even Mordhau's lawyer refuses anyone to visit. And even if you wait longer, they will not give what you want."

Upset that she is not given the chance to see Mordhau, Manita drives home but hopes that she will be given a second chance to check him.

"It's a rocky road," she narrated. "I started on my first day knowing that I'm now in the final stage of my journey. I hope that as I complete my duty as a modern-day prophet, many people will read my story. A story of how I changed people's lives."

Back to present-day, Manita arranges her final schedule before the high school graduation on Friday. She invites the last pair of guests to come.
