15. To See Yourself Become the Villain

"Mr. Reese, what's more valuable, one life, or a hundred?"

"I guess it would depend on the life."

"Ok. Let's say it's your life. Is it worth more than the lives of several hundred others?"

"Of course not."

"I'm glad you feel that way. Because I've put a bomb in one of the city's hospitals. It's going off in sixty minutes unless someone kills you."

"Who is this?"

"I had a vision. Of a world without Batman. The Mob ground out a little profit and the police tried to shut them down, one block at a time. And it was so boring. I've had a change of heart. I don't want Mr. Reese spoiling everything, but why should I have all the fun? Let's give someone else a chance. If Coleman Reese isn't dead in sixty minutes, then I blow up a hospital. Of course, you could just kill yourself, Mr., Reese. But that would be the noble thing to do. And you're a lawyer."

Gordon turned to one of the uniformed cops. "Call in every officer, tell them to head to their nearest hospital and start evac and search, call the transit authority, school board, prisons - get every available bus down to a hospital. The priority is Gotham general. Wheel everybody out of that place right now. My hunch is that's where the bomb is."

"Why?" One of them asked.

"That's where Harvey Dent is."

(Y/N) finished buttoning his suit and went to walk out the door as Natasha suddenly went to follow him.

"No, no. I need you here, checking Gordon's men and their families."

Natasha nodded. "Looking for?"

"Hospital admissions."

"Will you be taking the Batpod, (Y/N)?"

"Middle of the day, Nat? Not very subtle."

"The Lamborghini then?"

(Y/N) smirked slightly as the elevator closed.

Natasha smiled to herself. "Much more subtle."

—-

(Y/N)'s car pulled past a television station, chaos around it as Gordon tried to escort Reese out of the building.

"I saw O'Brian and Richards," he spoke into his earpiece

Natasha was on the other end. "Nothing on them, no immediate family members admitted to a Gotham hospital."

(Y/N) continued trailing the police van from a distance, "I see Burns and Zachary. And a patrolman I don't know."

"Burns is clean," Natasha confirmed. "Zachary..."

"There's at least one I don't know. Send the information to Gordon."

Inside the police van, Gordon felt his phone buzz. He quickly looked at the message. Erikson, Berg.

Gordon looked up at the uniformed cop across from him. The name tag on it said Berg.

"Berg, isn't it?" Gordon asked.

"Commissioner?" The young cop replied.

"You ok, son?" Gordon watched as Berg fiddled with his shotgun. "I'm gonna need your weapon, son."

"What? Why? Because my wife's in the hospital?"

"Yeah. That would be why."

An impact jolted the van. Berg suddenly turned on Reese, but Gordon grabbed the barrel of the shotgun, forcing it upwards. Berg fired into the ceiling, and Gordon smashed the younger cop on the head with his sidearm, knocking him out cold.

Gordon stepped out to see a pickup truck at the intersection, with a Lamborghini stuck between them. He saw (Y/N) step out of the Lamborghini. "You ok, Mr. (L/N)?"

(Y/N) looked at him, "Call me (Y/N). I think so."

"That was a brave thing, you did."

"Trying to catch the light?"

"You weren't protecting the van?"

(Y/N) looked at the police van as though seeing it for the first time. "Why? Who's in it?" He saw Reese exit from the van and nod in thanks.

"You don't watch a whole lot of news, do you, Mr. (L/N)?" Gordon asked.

(Y/N) shrugged. "It can get a little intense. Think I should go to the hospital?"

"Not today, I wouldn't."

Natasha suddenly chimed in on (Y/N)'s earpiece. "Real smooth, man."

Harvey suddenly woke from his hospital bed at the sound of gunshots in the room. He saw a female nurse - or so he thought. The nurse removed her mask and a wig, revealing the Joker in a hospital gown.

"I don't want there to be any hard feelings between us, Harvey," the Joker said. "When you and, uh..."

"RACHEL!" Harvey shouted.

"...When you and Rachel were being abducted, I was sitting in Gordon's cage. Now, I didn't rig those charges."

"Your men. Your plan," Harvey said, his burnt face not hurting nearly as much as his heart.

"Do I really look like a guy with a plan? I don't have a plan. The mob has plans, the cops have plans. You know what I am, Harvey? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do if I caught one! I just do things. I'm just the wrench in the gears. I hate plans. Yours, theirs. Everyone's. Maroni has plans. Gordon has plans. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I'm not a schemer, I show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know I'm telling the truth. It's the schemers who put you where you are. You were a schemer. You had plans. Look where it got you. I just did what I do best. I took your plan, and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plan is horrifying! If I tell the press that tomorrow a gangbanger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics. Because it's all a part of the plan. But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everybody loses their minds!" The Joker held out a pistol to Harvey. "Introduce a little anarchy, you upset the established order and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. And you know the thing about chaos, Harvey? It's fair."

Harvey looked down at the weapon, taking it in his hands and pressing it to the Joker's forehead, he 5en pulled out his coin.

He showed the Joker the good side. "You live." He flipped the coin over. "You die."

The Joker smiled. "Now you're talking."

The Joker walked through the hospital hall. He pulled a detonator out of his pocket and pushed the button, strolling along as the rooms next to him exploded.

He walked outside and continued to walk as the windows shattered.

He looked back and saw the hospital wasn't obliterated, he raised his arms in confusion, then began pressing buttons at random. Then the hospital blew to the ground, consumed by a fiery inferno.
