Chapter 22 • The Soul-center

A shiver ran down Eunha's spine as her wide eyes scanned her surroundings.
It had taken the group of now eight the rest of the day to arrive at the soul-center, or actually their last point of transport to the soul-center. Apparently the important building could be found in a cave surrounded by an enormous lake. They had to take a boat to get to the center and when saying boat, it was more of a big canoe really.

The small yet long thing was made of an old looking wood that curled up in a slightly higher point at the front. The outside was painted a pine green, though the original material could be seen in some places where the paint had come off,  while the sturdy benches were made an inky black colour.

They had to sit in that unstable looking thing with eight people and go out on the water. Water that looked so dark and ominous that Eunha feared even dipping the tip of one finger in would end up in her being dragged to the bottom of the lake; that was if there even was a bottom. For all she knew the cold darkness went on forever.

The fear that rushed through Eunha's small form, like chaotic bees zooming around in alarm, must have shown on her face because before she could even let out a breath to ease her nerves, Jungkook had stopped in front of her with a stupid smirk on his face.

"Scared now, are we kitten?" The nickname left his mouth in amusement, playful eyes observing her features. Her startled expression turned into an annoyed glare as she looked up at the boy; in her mind she might have shown him a death-stare, but to him she looked like a cute little prey trying to appear like an intimidating predator.
Absolutely adorable.

"What is it with you guys and those stupid nicknames? Can you just stop it?! I'm not a kitten, not a bunny, not a princess, not a lamb, not your baby girl, not a fruit, not any of that!" Eunha's breath was heavy as she had spit out the entire sentence without a pause. For some reason she was really fed up with his teasing. Maybe it was a build up from all the comments she had received throughout the weeks of walking, but she couldn't keep in her frustration any longer.

Her outburst seemed to surprise the others as all creatures looked at her in silence. A sense of pride filled Eunha as she took in their dumbfounded expressions, mistaking their silence for agreement to stop calling her all those names.

With a satisfied smile on her face the girl passed through the group of men who stood scattered in front of her, and made her way to the wobbly looking boat.
She despised the ocean, not knowing what kind of evil would be lurking in the deeps of the water, but if this was their only way in then she had to get over that childhood fear.

As she stood by the edge of the water, trying to figure out how to get all eight of them on the wooden thing, the pleasant silence was interrupted by someone clearing their throat.

Eunha turned back around with an eyebrow raised, noticing how all of the men had replaced their surprised look with either a smirk or a playful grin.
They seemed to have come to a wordless agreement.

"So shorty it is then?"

Eunha pulled a face that showed how done she was with every single one of them. They knew she'd rather be called things as princess and baby than shorty, because that was just low.
"If you're referring to elf-boy, then yes, shorty it is."

A look of offense crossed Jimin's face as he inched closer to the girl, purposely trying to broaden his shoulders and straighten his spine to appear taller. His eyes glistened dangerously as he peered down at the human. "You want to say that again, bunny?"

He had somehow managed to deepen his voice, the tone making Eunha's heart flutter nervously in her chest.

"You're short." Eunha remained eye-contact as she spoke, not wanting to show Jimin that he actually succeeded in being intimidating. He could be the softest cinnamon roll in the world, but damn was he scary when angry.

Jimin looked slightly taken back by her blunt response, but then a frown appeared on his face as he broke character, "You're literally shorter than me, you midget!"

Eunha let out a dramatic gasp; that struck a nerve. "Midget? Excuse you! I'll show you what this 'midget' can do!"

Before Eunha could jump the elf and beat his ass, Namjoon appeared behind her, arms circling around her waist as he picked her up. "Alright kids, that's enough."
Eunha didn't even have to look at his face to know he was both amused and tired with their behaviour.

Taehyung neared the three with a playful grin on his face as he waved his hands around in the air, his deep melodic voice sounding tauntingly, "Yeah, why fight about this when obviously you're both dwarf-sized?"

Jimin and Eunha, who had been holding a stare-off until now, focused their deadly glares on the smug demon. Before he could protect himself the two had reached out and smacked the back of his head simultaneously.

Namjoon let out an sigh, turning Eunha away from both the demon and the elf in case she decided to jump them, and put her down next to Yoongi. In response the doll placed his big hand on her shoulder, his laid-back nature calming her down in process.

After making sure Eunha wouldn't try anything, Namjoon turned back to Jimin and Tae just in time to see the demon slap the elf on the back of his head in return.
"Seriously?"

Hoseok jumped forwards, arms circling around Jimin's small waist to break him away from the demon, while Namjoon picked up the latter.
They put the two on their feet when there was some distance between them and let out an annoyed sigh. "Okay look, I know you guys have been in each other's presence for the past couple of weeks or so, but let's at least try to be nice to each other." The angel said in a warm voice as he glanced at the guilty three.

"He's right. We've all got our frustrations, but if something is bothering you just talk about it like the grown-ups you are instead of fighting, understood?" Namjoon watched how the three meekly nodded their heads. "Good, now apologize."

Deciding not to mess with the obviously irritated vampire, Taehyung and Jimin mumbled their apology, both of the boys looking anywhere but each other.
The girl however, did not say anything and this didn't go unnoticed by the tall man. He looked at her expectantly, one eyebrow raised in question, "Eunha?"

A slight pout pulled on her lips as she crossed her arms stubbornly, "You said grown-ups, I'm still seventeen." She shrugged her shoulders, eyes glued to a random leaf on the ground. She didn't like getting scolded, especially not in front of others.
The vampire gave her a look that said, 'do you really want to try me?', the moment Eunha dared to glance at him, making her shift uncomfortably before looking the other way again.

"As you're not yet a grown-up do you want me to count to three then, baby girl." His voice was calm which honestly made it all the more intimidating. The low tone secretly warned her as his dominant aura made her feel smaller than ever.

Knowing that the vampire would probably punish her like a little kid if she didn't listen, Eunha decided to apologize. In all honesty she was acting like a little kid. Why? She had no clue. This never happened before. At home she had always been the 'grown-up' figure who took care of everyone. Here she didn't have to which kind of confused her.

Letting out a frustrated sigh the girl pushed away her pride and glanced at both Tae and Jimin, "M' sorry." The two nodded in response, showing her a small smile in acceptance.

"Good girl." A slight blush appeared on Eunha's cheeks at Namjoon's words, but she decided to ignore it. Instead she pointed at the boat to divert all the attention that was on her, "Let's go now, shall we?"

They turned to look at Jungkook who, as well as Jin, was looking at everyone with wide eyes.
The prince leaned closer to the soul-keeper, his eyebrows furrowed in slight confusion, "What just happened?"

"I have no clue. Let's just ignore it." And with that, Jungkook stepped forwards, hand pointing towards the boat. "Alright, it's steadier than it looks, though we should probably spread the weight evenly. I'll be standing at the back to get us inside..."
His voice trailed off as he pressed his hand to his lips in thought, his slightly wavy hair moving as the night's wind danced through it.

Slowly nodding his head as he thought of a setup. His dark eyes quickly searched the ground around him, lighting up as they landed on a lost stick. He picked up the slightly muddied thing, swiftly sliding the bottom of his black boot over the ground to create an even surface. Then he started drawing.
"Okay how about this. This is the boat, I'm standing here in the back. To even that out, I think Namjoon should sit in the front of the boat." He pointed his stick at the shortest bench in the front, drawing a little circle to indicate that the place was taken. There were now two benches for three people per plank left, one in the middle of the boat and the other in between the aforementioned and Jungkook.

The soul-keeper pointed at the bench in the middle, "As both Taehyung and Hoseok have their wings which adds quite some weight, they should sit on either side of this bench. Eunha can sit in between them as she is in fact the smallest, no offense." The girl nodded her head, showing him that it was alright. Small was something else than short, though both were true.

He then pointed at the last bench in front of him, "That leaves Jin, Yoongi and Jimin to sit here. I think Jin should be in the middle as you two are around the same weight."

The group nodded their head in agreement, Jimin patting Jungkook's shoulder softly, "Sounds good!"

"Alright, let me first get us some light before we step in." The soul-keeper walked towards the boat, grabbing the little lantern that was hanging at the front. His brown orbs focused on the palm of his hand in concentration. Then, out of nowhere, an icy blue light so bright that Eunha had to divert her gaze, appeared in his hand. He put the ball of whatever it was that he had created, inside of the lantern and hung the thing back in it's original place.

Because the lantern's windows were tainted a yellow colour, the light illuminating from within the magical lamp turned into a neon green, casting an eerie glow over the night's darkness.

"Wow." It came out more as a gasp of amazement than an actual word, but it still expressed Eunha's wonder for what the man had just created. "I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing all the supernatural stuff."

Hoseok let out a laugh, softly patting the girl's head in adoration. "Does that mean you expect to be around us for a long time?" The angel said in a teasing voice.

"It means that even though I think all of your skills are kind of cool, they are mostly surprisingly strange and I will not get used to that. The powers." She emphasized, especially not talking about the slight attachment she had grown to the group of people around her. It sure would be weird to suddenly never see them again after everything was done, but by then she had her family to take care of. It was not like she would have a lot of time to dwell about a lost friendship...right?

"The powers, of course. Well mortal missy, it's your turn to climb into the boat without those 'surprisingly strange' powers." Hoseok pointed his hand to show that half of the group had already sat down.

The girl threw him a cute smile before hurrying into the boat, grabbing tightly onto both Namjoon's and Jin's hand as they helped her keep her balance.
Once she had sat down she felt her body tense as the thing heavily shook side to side as Hoseok entered.
Feeling the fear radiate off of the girl, the angel made sure to firmly clasp her tiny hand into his, silently reassuring her that it would be okay.
To her surprise she felt another large hand slip into her free one, a thumb circling on the back of her hand to ease her nerves. She quickly glanced to her right, eyes meeting Taehyung's who was staring at her with an expressionless face.

Slightly shocked, but not bothered, Eunha showed the both of them a grin in appreciation, focusing her attention on Jungkook who had stepped in at the back of the boat. He was holding a dark wooden paddle that shone in the light of the glowing lantern, the hood of his cloak back onto his head, though they could still see his handsome face this time.

"Lady and gents, welcome aboard of JK's sailing trip, please keep your hands, feet and wings inside of the boat at all times, and don't forget to tip the sailor at the end of it. I hope you enjoy this ride, because you'll be going on it again after you've died. Only then, you'll never be coming back~"
