Chapter 20

Joe and Demi entered the room where their daughter lay on the hospital bed. She was still sleeping peacefully, but the doctor had to wake her up to go check her signs. Doctor James called Freen's name, while  Demi covered her face with her palms nervously.
"Ok, Sleeping Beauty! It's time to wake up." The doctor chuckled and snapped his fingers in front of her eyes, making Freen move slowly. She opened her eyes slowly and shook her head.
"Mhm... Where am I?"Freen asked with a confused look.
"Hi, Miss Freen! I'm Dr. James. You are at the hospital." Dr. James started talking.
"Freen! Mommy is here, baby girl!" Demi said and ran to hold her daughter's hand.
"Mhm... Mom! Can you please turn on the lights!" Freen said, and this made everyone drop their smiles.
"What?" Demi asked with a shocked expression, and the doctor rushed to check her eyes with a flashlight. He sighed and shook his head.
"What does this mean?" Joe asked, but none answered. The doctor rushed to check her legs. He touched her feet with a pencil, yet no response.
"Miss Freen! Can you feel my touch?" The doctor asked with a sad voice.
"Where? mhm... I can't feel anything." Freen said, and this made the doctor place his hands on his head, like a sign of desperation. This made Demi cry.
"Ok... Freen... Can you tell me what is the last thing you remembered?" The doctor asked with a worried expression.
"Mhm... I don't remember anything.... But, can you please turn on the lights? I can't see. It's scary to talk in the dark." Freen asked.
"Freen... Try and remember anything. What is the last thing you remember? Close your eyes and try to focus. We need this. Tell us an event, or anything." The doctor insisted.
"Mom! Where are you? Tell them to turn on the lights! I wanna go home! I need to study for my SAT! Call Dallas to pick me up! Please!" Demi froze when she heard all the things her daughter had said. "Mom! Why don't you answer? Call Aunt Dallas to pick me up!" Freen started shaking and raising her voice.
"Freen! Calm down, baby girl! Mommy's here!" Demi said softly.
"Miss Freen! I want to tell you that you were a bone marrow transplant donor. Unfortunately, there was an incident during that, and you just woke up. I am afraid that your sleep affected your eyesight. But don't worry! We will have an MRI to check what is going on." The doctor tried to explain to Freen.
"Wait! Am I blind?" Freen instantly said. Everyone went silent and she busted into tears, shaking. "No!! This cannot be true! Mom! Call Dallas! I need her! Please!" Freen said shaking her whole body and this made the doctor order a sedative.
"Please! Take a deep breath, Miss Freen. We are here for you." The doctor tried to calm her down.
Soon enough, Freen calmed down. She closed her eyes and she was not aware of anything. Demi knew exactly what is this. She wiped her tears away and took a deep breath when she turned to the doctor.
"Brain damage because of the overdose, isn't it?" Demi asked with a sad tone, waiting for confirmation.
"We don't know for sure. We need to have an MRI to receive confirmation. She's 24, and she believes that she is in high school, which means she might have memory loss. I'm more worried about her being blind right now. We will check on her again. Being in a coma and suddenly waking up can affect her limbs, but we will also page to the Kinesiotherapy if that's the case so she could start walking again." The doctor assured the parents.
"Thank you! I have a question. My sister died a few months ago. I don't know how to deal with her requesting her aunt..." Demi started but the doctor cut her off.
"She needs to be protected from any shock. I understand there was a strong bond between them, but any stress or shock might be fatal. Avoid talking about your sister, until we have the information we need for her to feel better."
As soon as the doctor left, Joe looked at Demi with a puzzled expression. He wanted to know how did Demi know about their daughter's condition before the doctor said it. He took a deep breath and made his question:
"How comes she might have her brain damaged, Demi?" Joe asked.
"I lost my eyesight when I suffered an overdose a few years ago. I hope my daughter will recover her eyesight the same way as I did..." Demi answered coldly.
"I'm sorry! I never knew about this thing." Joe sighed deeply.
"Of course, you didn't..." Demi said and made her way back to Freen, ignoring Joe.
Becky kept looking for a way to get in contact with Freen, but she couldn't, because Max refused to answer his phone calls. There were rumors regarding Demi's absence in both the media and social media for these couple of days, so he replied to his family only. There was no other way than to keep in touch with Hailee who was also unaware of Freen's state. Something was fishy since she tried to do some leaking data and she discovered Freen is not even registered as a patient. It gave her chills all the way down to her spine. The final solution was to wait for her older friend to contact her, even though she misses her a lot.
The results came by and it seemed like Freen had some minor brain injuries. She will be able to walk in a few weeks and recover her eyesight if she will receive the proper medication. At first, Freen didn't cooperate, but soon enough she didn't have an option, but to obey.
After two more weeks, Freen was discharged and she could go home. Her parents were by her side during this whole process. She started walking a little, and the blindness kept fading away. When it comes to memory, she didn't make a big improvement. She only accepts the situation. Demi made sure her daughter receives the best medical care at home, so she will get well as soon as possible. She wouldn't leave her daughter alone in that situation.
"Max!" Demi shouted her bodyguard's name, from the dining table, and he came quickly in front of Demi.
"Yes, Demi! Need any help?" Max said worriedly.
"Please, take these medical documents and bring them to Freen's college. Make sure they will understand that Freen cannot take the exams now and they will not require her to retake the courses. We need to prepare everything for her to come back as if nothing bad happened." Demi said and Max nodded, taking the documents from her hands.
"Demi... We might have a problem... Not that I don't like Freen and I don't treat her as my own daughter, but she told everyone that I am her father. The day when she had the transplant, Taylor Swift's daughter came by and asked me about her condition. Hailee was there and I just went on with the lie...A few days after, their bodyguard called me, and I didn't answer. I'm pretty sure that girl wanted to check on Freen." Max said scratching his chin.
"Oh, no... That's all we needed now... I swear that Swift is like the devil... She keeps coming back to me to fuck up my life..." Demi sighed deeply and placed her head into her hands. "I'm saying thanks to God I don't get to interact with her, and here comes her daughter, ready to get involved with mine." She let another deep sigh and then looked at Max for a few seconds.
Max looked at Demi's face and noticed that she was troubled. He didn't know what to say, but he got caught up by surprise when Demi started laughing out of nowhere. He looked at her with a questioning look thinking she might go crazy after everything that happened.
"This kid... I just can't believe she said you are her father... You! A blonde guy, with blue hair, being the father of a brunette, dark-eyed girl. Who would be that stupid to think that you are her biological father? The only feature that you might have in common might be the shape of your ears..." Demi said between the laughs and Max busted into laughter...
"True... Don't worry... I will keep being her father after you just hurt my feelings..." Max laughed, placing his arm near his heart, pretending to be hurt by Demi's words.
"Thanks... Seriously, now... Freen and I are extremely lucky to have you in our life. I couldn't thank you enough." Demi said cracking a smile.
"I'm very lucky to have you too. You know how much I wished to have a child, and I couldn't. At least, I adopted you and Freen." Max said letting out a small laugh.
"Ok, Grandpa... Please, handle the documents. After you finish, we have to go to the studio. The paparazzi missed me already..." Demi rolled her eyes.
"Father, not grandpa, please... She made me younger. Demi... Have you contacted Hailee? I believe that Freen needs a friend right now... She would help her remember some things and it will be great to cheer Freen up a little bit." Max asked in front of the door, ready to exit the house.
"I asked Freen first, and she said she doesn't want her to be seen like that by anyone. I tried to make her see a therapist but she declined it. I will respect her wishes. I know that it would be great if she would talk to someone else besides me."Demi said with a sad tone.
"Ok.. I'll call you if anything happens. Bye!" Max said making his way out, and Demi waved back to him.
Freen was alone in her room and stared at the wall. She hated her state. She couldn't walk without crutches yet, and this made her very frustrated. Also, she was trying to remember things and she couldn't. Demi entered her daughter's room with a warm Chocolate milk mug in her hands, smiling.
"Hi, sweetie... Look what mummy brought you.."
"Mom... Stop treating me like a 3-year-old..." Freen gave Demi a cold stare.
"Can't I take care of my daughter?" Demi said giving her daughter the mug.
"You are acting weird. Where is Dallas? Since when do you have time for me? The last thing I remember is that you were on a tour around the world." Freen said taking a sip from her drink.
"Can you, please, stop asking about Dallas? It makes me shiver when I heard that you want to see her." Demi told Freen without thinking.
"Why? I mean, Dally is an angel? Did you fight?" Freen asked scanning Demi's face.
"Yeah... An angel indeed. *she sighed* No... We didn't fight, love! It's complicated. Please rest... You did the brain exercise on your tab, didn't you? You will soon recover your memory, sweetie..." Demi placed a kiss on her forehead.
"Mom... So, Dad had a daughter, and he asked me to help her out and I accepted... Then what?" Freen asked Demi with a stern look.
"The anesthesiologist gave you a double shot of anesthesia... This affected your brain a little... But don't worry! I'll make them pay... I'll sue the hospital..." Demi said feeling the anger taking over her but tried to calm down.
"Mom! Don't do that! They could also leak our personal data. Just let them go." Freen said trying to reach her mother's hand.
"Freen! I could have lost you! You could have died!! I can not forgive them for almost taking away the person I love the most. What if there are other people like you, huh? Will we let them die?" Demi said standing up angrily and walking around the room.
"Mom! Calm down! Am I dead? No! So, please, forgive them! For me!" Freen said trying to stand up and reach her mother, but Demi jumped in front of her.
"Don't you dare to move without any of us near you!" Demi said with her dark piercing eyes.
"Ugh! I hate this Mom! I hate that I cannot move. I wanna walk again!" Freen busted instead into tears, and Demi hugged her shushing her down.
"Shh... Baby... Please! Don't do this! You will be normal again, soon! Trust Mommy on that!" Demi said feeling how the tears are building up. "You know... Let me call Hailee. Let her visit you. You need your friend." She kissed Freen's cheek.
"She will see me like this!" Freen mumbled between the sobs.
"Hailee saw you worse than that. She knows you since you were in diapers. Please! Let her visit you!" Demi insisted.
"Ok... Call her!" Freen said letting go of her mother's hug.
Soon enough, Hailee came over to Freen's house. Demi warned her not to tell Freen about her aunt and to take care of her, knowing that she was in a fragile state. Hailee stepped into Freen's room after knocking on the door. She analyzed her friend's state and noticed her sad face looking at the door. Hailee jumped into Freen's arms and hugged her, petting her head.
"I missed you, Jonas!! How dare you not tell me about anything! Are you that dumb? When will you stop having this hero syndrome? I wanna kill you!! You have no idea what I went through!" Hailee kept scolding her friend while hugging her.
"Can you shut up, Hailee? I wouldn't let you come here if my mother wasn't insisting." Freen said with a tired voice.
"Wow!" Hailee broke the hug. "Congrats, Freen Sarocha Jonas! Well done!" Hailee fake applauded her friend. "I was worried sick about you, and you wouldn't let me come here. I know since we were in diapers!! I know everything about you and you still keep secrets away from me! I kept your secret about being Joe and Demi's daughter up until now. I always protected you like you were my baby! Do you realize how bad you were?" Hailee angrily snapped at her friend.
"Hailee!! I can't walk!! I can't remember things!! Do you realize how it is for me??" Freen broke down into tears. "I can't remember my last years of life. I want my aunt near me, but Mom refuses to call her over. I don't know what happened between them. I don't wanna be disabled, Hailee! I don't want you to see me like this. I don't want this!!" Freen said letting down her thoughts. Hailee couldn't stand anymore and pulled her into a tight hug.
"Freen! I love you to death! You are my sister. You can't let me be an outsider. I will help you. Demi told me you're improving day by day. Let me fight with you! You will walk again and you will remember everything." Hailee kissed her friend's forehead.
As soon as Freen calmed down, Hailee broke the silence again. She let go of her friend's hug again and caressed her cheeks with her thumbs, wiping off her tears.
"So, baby! What happened? Tell me everything!" Hailee said.
"I don't know. My father has a young kid, and she needed a transplant. I helped her, and unfortunately, the anesthesiologist made a mistake and I had a double shot of anesthesia. It affected my brain. At first, I wasn't able to see anything, and I thought I'll be blind. Now, I can't walk properly, and I don't remember anything as I said." Freen said staring into her friend's eyes.
"Poor you! Damn! That anesthesiologist! Was he even a doctor?? I wanna kill that bastard. Freen... you never told me about that sister of yours. I knew your father had two other daughters because it was in the news." Hailee said sighing. "You knew I wouldn't let you be a hero again, and that's why you didn't tell me..." Hailee said in an angry tone.
"Yeah, maybe that was it... I have no idea." Freen said cluelessly.
"Ok... I suppose you don't remember about Becky. Am I right?" Hailee asked.
"Becky who?" Freen made a poker face, and Hailee slapped her forehead.
"Becky Swift! Your girlfriend!" Hailee teased her friend making kissing noises.
"What girlfriend, Hailee? Stop being an idiot!" Freen felt her cheeks burning.
"Gosh! You are blushing! So adorable! Aww..." Hailee teased her friend.
"Stop it, Hailee! I don't even know who that girl is." Freen snapped.
"It's the girl you exchanged saliva with, twice at least.." Hailee kept teasing and laughing when her friend became red.
"I don't know what are you talking about, Steinfeld. I don't know that girl. You are just making this up, just to mock me for hiding my condition from you." Freen arranged her hair in frustration.
"I swear to you that you sucked each other's faces!" Hailee laughed.
"Ugh! I wanna punch you so badly now!" Freen said letting out a frustrated sigh.
.....To be continued...
