Chapter 16

   "Try aiming higher, Stonepaw."

Mosspaw watched as her brother and sister practiced fighting each other. She shivered at the thought of having to use those moves on other cats. The injuries that came from them would take so many resources to treat.

"Mosspaw, do you want a turn?"

Mosspaw glanced up at Rosetail. "Err, I guess," she mewed awkwardly. Featherwhisker insisted on training her in basic battle moves, despite her training in StarClan.

"You need to try them on living cats," he had insisted.

"Try attacking me," Mistypaw provoked. "Pretend I'm going to destroy your herb storage."

Filled with rage at the thought of her hard work being destroyed, Mosspaw launched herself at her sister. Mistypaw toppled backwards but quickly regained her balance, then rolled on the ground in an attempt to get Mosspaw off.

Mosspaw anticipated the move though, and grasped on harder, kicking her sister's chest as she rolled. Mistypaw let out a yowl of frustration and Mosspaw lessened her grip.

Mistypaw took the opportunity to shake her off, but Mosspaw landed on four paws and leapt back at her, knocking her over and pinning her down by the throat.

"Do you surrender?" Mosspaw taunted.

"Get off me!" Mistypaw growled.

Mosspaw stepped off her sister, who awkwardly stood up and shook her head.

"Beaten by a medicine cat? And on her first fight?" Stonepaw teased.

"Shut up!" Mistypaw hissed. Her gaze softened as she realized what she had said. "I'm sorry!"

"It's okay," Stonepaw mewed, gently batting her ear. "We'll just have to keep practicing!"

Guilt surged through Mosspaw. She hadn't told her siblings about her power or training in StarClan yet. Snowfur had walked her through a similar fight just days before.

"Let's try again!"

Mosspaw stepped forward, getting ready to bat her paws at her opponent. But just before she could strike, she froze from horror.

"Look out!" she screeched. But nobody was there. Mistypaw, Stonepaw, and their mentors were all gone. Mosspaw was alone, in front of the biggest creature she had ever seen. It was orange, as bright as a sunset, and covered in black stripes. It looked like a cat, but larger, with giant, sharp claws. It's mouth was dripping in blood, creating a pool at it's feet. It snarled at Mosspaw.

"Help!"

"Mosspaw!"

Mosspaw blinked and Mistypaw was in front of her, her eyes round with concern. Mosspaw's fur was fluffed out, making her look twice her size, and she glanced frantically back and forth.

It was a vision. But what did it mean?

"I- I need to go," she stuttered, backing up. The other cats in the clearing stared at her, all with worry glittering in their gaze.

"What happened? Did you get a vision?" Mistypaw questioned.

Mosspaw turned around and ran back to the camp as fast as she could, not stopping for a second to see if there was anything around her. Shaken, she skidded into the camp, frantically searching for Featherwhisker or Spottedpaw. She saw them sharing a mouse.

"Featherwhisker!" she called, attracting the attention of her Clanmates. "Medicine den, now," she panted.

"What's going on?" Spottedpaw followed them. Mosspaw didn't dare say a word until they were safely alone in the medicine clearing.

"I had a vision," she explained. She told them about the creature in full detail.

"It sounds like a tiger- one of our great ancestors." Featherwhisker tucked his paws under his tail. "But what does it mean?"

"I don't know!" Mosspaw hissed.

"Calm down!" Spottedpaw hissed back. "I know it's scary, but you need to calm down so we can figure out what it means."

"I need to go to StarClan. Snowfur can tell me," Mosspaw muttered, eyes darting between her nest and her mentor.

"If StarClan wanted to tell you exactly what it meant, they would have already," Featherwhisker pointed out.

"I'm sure we'll figure it out in time," Spottedpaw pointed out. "You need to rest. But don't visit StarClan this time," she pleaded. "It'll only exhaust you further.

Mosspaw considered Spottedpaw's words, but only for a moment. Being in StarClan made her calm. As soon as she arrived there, she was flooded with the feeling of complete peace. That's what I really need!

"I won't visit StarClan," she lied.

"Thank you." Spottedpaw looked relieved. "We worry about you, you know."

"It's a big responsibility for a young cat. To have that kind of power," Featherwhisker added. "Use it wisely."

"I will!" Mosspaw sighed and padded over to her nest, laying down and tucking her nose under her tail. They didn't understand what it was like. How could they?

"We need to hold a Clan meeting."

"No, we don't. None of us have any idea what the vision could mean."

"So we all got the same one? The tiger, its mouth dripping with blood?"

Mosspaw woke to voices in the distance. She walked towards them, finding a group of cats, most of whom she recognized..

"Mosspaw!" Moonflower trilled, padding up to her and licking her head. "We had a vision and needed to share it with you, but we don't know what it means yet."

Mosspaw tilted her head. "StarClan doesn't know?"

"We don't know all, young one," a dark brown tom sighed.

"Why didn't you show it to Featherwhisker? Or Spottedpaw?"

"We didn't want to cause stress," Snowfur explained. "Showing the same vision to all the medicine cats would symbolize something of great importance. But showing just one apprentice, we hoped, wouldn't raise too many questions."

"Why not Spottedpaw, then?"

"This message was for you, Mosspaw."

Mosspaw didn't say anything more.

"You know, there's one cat in ThunderClan with tiger in his name," a gray tabby tom that Mosspaw recognized as Tawnyspots pointed out. He looked full of life, nothing like when he was asleep in the medicine den. Mosspaw decided to tell Sunstar that his old friend and deputy was doing well.

"Tigerclaw is a good cat, Tawnyspots," Snowfur hissed. "There's no reason to suspect him."

"His eyes burn with ambition," the other brown tom sighed.

"And is that a bad thing, Pine?" Snowfur questioned.

Pine? As in Pinestar? Mosspaw could tell her leader that he was alright, too.

"Not on its own," Moonflower rested her tail-tip on Snowfur's shoulder. "But it could lead to problems."

"Don't tell me you think he's a threat too! Just because you all hate Thistleclaw-"

"Of course not," Moonflower soothed. "But we need to keep an eye on cats like that, to keep them on the right path."

Snowfur growled but said no more.

"Until we know more, we mustn't make any assumptions," the other brown tom decided.

The rest of the cats in the clearing nodded in agreement.

"I agree, Oakstar," Snowfur chirped. "We don't know anything yet."

Mosspaw nodded, pretending to know what was going on.

"Come with me, Mosspaw," Snowfur mewed, stepping away from the others. Mosspaw followed her through the overgrowth until they arrived at the river.

"How do you feel?" Snowfur asked, gazing into the blue depths of the water.

"Confused," Mosspaw admitted.

"That's understandable."

"I always thought StarClan knew everything," Mosspaw sighed.

"We don't know all, my dear. We watch the Clans, and we dream, like you. But we don't always know what it all means."

Mosspaw nodded in understanding. "I better go. Featherwhisker will be missing me."

"Alright." Snowfur licked her ear. "See you later, Mosspaw."

Mosspaw dipped her head and headed back into the overgrowth, looking for a suitable place to lay down.

She heard a twig crack to her side and glanced over, seeing a dark brown, almost black, tabby tom looking back at her. He quickly bolted away. Mosspaw's ear twitched, but she continued, wondering who the cat was. She hadn't seen him before.

As Mosspaw curled up on a mossy patch, she wondered if she could trust Tigerclaw. After all, if the vision was about him, could it be a warning?
