Chapter 6

Everyone was discussing the days plan as Minnie sat with Ada and the baby.

"He's growing so quickly." Minnie grinned as she rocked him in her arms.

"He is, isn't he. He's such a good baby." Ada smiled and Polly stuck her head through the door as it opened.

"Come on." She whispered and Ada gently took the baby before standing. They both walked through the door.

"I'd like to introduce the newest member of the Shelby clan." Polly announced.

All the men began clapping as Ada made her way to the front of the room, where Tommy stood.

"Welcome home Ada." Tommy greeted with a nod.

"We named him Karl, after Karl Marx."

"Karl bloody Marx. Let me get a look at him." Arthur walked over to them.

"Oh here we go." John laughed as Arthur took Karl and put a hcap on him.

"Hey look, he looks just like me." Minnie laughed along with the others as Karl was held in the air.

"That's his arse that looks like you Arthur." John remarked and Minnie slapped his arm with a laugh and John messed her hair up.

"He's alright. He's a Shelby." They all gathered around baby Karl and passed him around so everyone could hold him.

One the plan was thoroughly sorted Tommy insisted they all go to the pub for a drink. One pint and a chaser only he said.

Minnie grabbed a drink of water and moved off into the side room when they got there. The men were being very rowdy and she didn't like that sometimes.

She looked up as the door creaked open, in walked John holding a whiskey.

"What are you doin in 'ere?" He asked.

"Just thought i'd go out the way for a bit." She shrugged. John sighed and sat down near her,

"You've been doin that a lot lately."

"I've had a lot to think about." He carried on staring at her, clearly wanting an answer. She decided she could trust him.

"It's Grace."

"Min, whatever you have against her no one knows. But Tommy is happy again." She shook her head at him.

"That's the problem John. Grace is with the coppers." He just laughed at her and drank his whiskey before standing. "I'm not lying John."

At that moment Tommy banged the door open and pulled Minnie out.

"Quick John, get ready. They are comin 'ere." They both ran to the house and Tommy pushed the door.

"Ada wake up, you and the baby go to the bull ring where there's lots of people." Polly walked in as Ada stood and looked at Tommy's frustrated face.

"What's going on?" She asked and Ada looked just as confused.

"We've been fuckin betrayed." Tommy huffed and leant against the mantel piece. "Someone let slip. Kimber's men are on their way 'ere."

"Yeh but you can handle them Tommy." Polly urged and he shook his head. Minnie slumped down into a chair looking scared. These men were coming to kill her family.

"It's just us. All the Lee's are on their way to Worcester. We're outnumbered. Fuck." Be banged a fist against the mantel as Polly looked at him.

"But who else knew today was the day you were moving on Kimber? You said you kept it secret. Who else did you tell?" Polly's face then dawned with realisation at the look in Tommy's eyes. "There's only one thing that can blind a man like you Tommy. Love. It's that barmaid."

"Grace." Minnie growled. "No surprise."

"What does that mean?" Tommy hissed and she stood to look at him properly.

"I saw her in the graveyard with Campbell." Minnie laughed coldly. "I even saw him try to propose to her." Hi eyes looked dark and dangerous, but there was a hint of sadness there. "I didn't say anything because you were happy and I didn't want to spoil it."

Polly put a hand on his chest before he could speak. "I'll deal with Grace. If you set eyes on her again you might kill her." He stormed out of the door and it slammed shut behind him. Minnie looked at Polly and Ada before rushing up the stairs and into Tommy's room.

She went over to the fireplace and popped open a little flap underneath before pulling out the item she was looking for. Minnie lifted up the small black and silver revolver. The metal felt cold and heavy in her hand. The anger coursed through her and she would not let that Irish bitch get away with betraying her family.

Although she didn't like Grace, she could see her dad was happy and then the look on his face when he realised just broke her heart. She copied what she had seen her dad do and pushed the barrel to the side. She counted 6 bullets in there.

Minnie then crept across the landing and into her room where she grabbed her small bag and shoved the gun inside. She held the bag tightly and took a deep breath as she stood in the middle of her room.

She walked down and through the house, you could have heard a pin drop. The street was just as quiet as she went towards the Garrison. Minnie knew she wouldn't kill Grace, she was just going to try and scare her. She knew threats worked well, her dad taught her that.

The door to the pub opened with a creak and Minnie stepped inside, wondering over to the bar. Grace appeared from the back room and she jumped when she saw Minnie sat there.

"What are you doing here?" Grace questioned and the glare she received was deadly.

"You betrayed my dad and my family." Minnie hissed. She pulled the gun from the bag and held it up, hand shaking. "As much as I don't like you, I could see he was happy. I had a feeling you knew that inspector."

"It is none of your business. I know you won't shoot that gun." Minnie could see she was reassuring herself. Grace's hand twitched closer towards her own bag. Her eyes never left the tip of the gun pointed at her. "You wouldn't use that. Your only a young girl." Minnie smirked and tilted her head to the side.

"You know who my family is. What they do. I could be capable of anything." Grace's eyes widened as she shook her head. Minnie jumped off the stool and stood closer, taking in her slightly red eyes and sad look on her face.

"At first I did what I had to. Tommy wasn't part of that."

"But then he was. I saw you and Campbell in the Graveyard. He proposed."

"I said no." Grace shot back. "He was my fathers friend." Minnie laughed humorlessly.

"Please tell me your leaving."

"I-I am. The train leaves in a few hours." Minnie nodded in assent.

"Good." She walked forward and pushed Grace against the bar, the gun pushed against her stomach. "If I ever see you again, I won't be responsible for my actions." She then turned and smiled as she heard Grace sigh in relief.

For some reason Minnie had a feeling it wasn't the last she had seen of Grace as the bond rushed through the back door. She wondered out the front after putting the gun away. A couple of men were hanging around and she gasped and ran over into once of the coal bays as suddenly two large groups of men came from both directions.

Minnie could see her dad and Uncle's amongst the one group, Billy Kimber and his men stood opposite. They were talking but Minnie couldn't really hear them.

"All guns and no balls, right Billy boy." John shouted. A couple of the men laughed but Minnie couldn't hear the response. She looked behind her and saw the bays were connected, so she ran further inside.

She found the middle one and went down to the front where she hid behind some crates. She could hear them now properly.

"-bit off more than you could chew you little toe rag and now i'm gonna take over this shit 'ole." Kimber spat. He lifted his gun and so did everyone else. Minnie's heart was beating fast, she held her breath, waiting.

"If we have to use guns." Tommy spoke. "Let's use proper guns." Minnie looked over and smiled as Freddie came walking out carrying a big machine gun, Danny following behind.

"Sergeant Thorne reporting for duty sir." He spoke with a smirk.

"You were sayin' something about being outgunned." Tommy announced and the men laughed.

"Move" A voice ordered and Minnie groaned as she watched Ada come in between the two groups pushing her pram. Freddie looked furious.

"What are you doin'?" He couldn't believe his wife could put their son in danger like that.

"I believe you boys call this no mans land." She started.

"Ada."

"Shut up and listen-"

"-Have you lost your mind!" Freddie shouted. Minnie almost found the situation funny, it was odd to have this happening in front of her eyes.

"I said shut up. Now most of you were in France, so you all know what happens next. I've got brothers and a husband here. But you've all got someone waiting for you. I'm wearing black in preparation. I want you to look at me. I want you all to look at me. Who'll be wearing black for you? Think about them. Think about them right now. Fight if you want to, but that baby ain't moving anywhere and neither am I."

"She's actually serious." Minnie muttered, shocked.

"She's right ya know. Why should all you men die, should just be them who's caused it." The gun was lifted into the air and quick as a flash a bullet soared towards Tommy.

Minnie screamed and ran from her hiding place as Tommy fell to the ground. Another bullet cut through Danny and he fell to the ground dead.

Within a split second two gun shots fired and Billy Kimber dropped to the floor, no longer moving. The ringing in Minnie's ears got louder and louder, the blood rushing, chest heaving. She stood in front of the man she had just shot, looking down at the wound in his head and one in his chest.

Her knees painfully hit the ground as the gun dropped from her hand. She had completely zoned out, not hearing a thing through the ringing of her ears. The body was dragged away and she jumped as someone touched her shoulder.

"Minnie." The voice spoke. Her shoulder was shaken gently as she looked up. It was her father.

"Dad." She muttered. She pulled herself up and hugged him. A hiss of pain escaped his lips but he pulled her closer. "I shot him dad."

"I know Min. It's okay. Everything is okay now." She nodded into his chest.

At that moment father and daughter stood together in the middle of the street, Minnie felt hopeful that life might get better from now on.

She didn't realise how right she actually was. Sort of.
