55. The Cybermat

ON THE GROUND FLOOR, THEY'RE ALL HIDING AMONGST THE PERFUME AND MAKE UP COUNTERS. George, the same security guard as earlier, is making his rounds, so they have to stay hidden. This isn't ideal in the slightest, but it doesn't last long, so that's something at least.

When it's clear, the Doctor starts scanning with his sonic screwdriver. "Right, let's be having you then, Cybermat."

Alfie begins to cry. Aurora has to take him out of his stroller, and hug him. "Shhh..." He really doesn't like the sonic's noise.

"Can't you put that on quiet?" Craig cries out.

"No. It's a sonic screwdriver. Sonic equals sound." He hands Craig a papoose. "Take this. I got it on my discount, ten percent off. It's a papoose."

Craig stares at it as if it was disease-ridden. "Why do I need a papoose?!"

"Alfie wants you attached to him. You are far too slow when he summons you."

Aurora snorts, Craig glaring at her. "When's he going to stop giving me marks?"

"Never. That's parenthood. Couldn't you have just got a babysitter?" Alfie coos. "No, any babysitter. Doesn't have to be a hot one."

Arora turns to them. "Disturbing."

"I told everyone I know I didn't need their help this weekend," Craig sighs.

"Well..."

"They won't even answer my calls," he explains. "I didn't know there was going to be an invasion of Cyberman."

Alfie is making too much noise again, so Aurora shushes him. He fusses as they try to put him in the papoose, but eventually relaxes once he's near his dad.

Aurora hears some beeping behind her, and before she can even scream, the Doctor snares the Cybermat in the butterfly net. It immediately stops beeping.

"Ah ha!" The Doctor picks it up, and brings it up to their faces. "That's very odd. It must be on low power. Or I'm better at that than I remember."

Aurora looks at the small thing, smirking. "Oh, is that it?"

"Yeah."

"Oh, that's quite cute," Craig says with a smile. "Look at that. Look, Alfie, look."

The Cybermat bares its teeth, making them scream as Craig yanks Alfie away.

Its teeth. His real, yellow teeth. The Doctor sonics it into submission.

"Metal rat, real mouth!" Craig panics. "Metal rat, real mouth!"

"Yes, I know it is."

"Metal rat, real mouth!"

"Stop screaming," Aurora tries. "Stop, stop screaming! Shhh."

Craig strops screaming. The next scream doesn't come from him. It comes from the basement. They barely even look at each other before running downstairs.

Aurora stays behind as she helps Craig put the papoose on, struggling for what seems minutes before she runs after the Doctor.

When they reach the basement, her pulse quickens as she sees the Doctor on the ground. "Doctor! Doctor!" She kneels next to him, to make sure he's okay. He doesn't die yet. Does he? "Doctor!" He opens his eyes, gasping, and she lets out a sigh of relief. "What happened?"

"Oh, I've been, I've been chipped... chapped... chopped." She helps him up with a grunt as Craig arrives with the papoose on. "The Cyberman. It killed George, took him back to the ship."

"The Cybermen are here?" Craig asks. "But you said..."

"Yeah, I know what I said. I say a lot of things."

"Don't you just?"

"But I fused the teleport. It should have taken them days to repair..." He has to lean against some boxes.

Aurora pats his back worryingly. "Are you okay?"

"Oh, I should be dead, but the arm it chopped me with, it was damaged. Old spare parts. Must have changed those missing people."

"Was that trying to reassure me? 'Cause you failed."

"They've changed the missing into Cybermen?" Craig exclaims. "Why didn't they change you?"

"A long story. I'm not exactly compatible. But why are they using spare parts? Why? Everything I find out makes less sense."

Aurora puts her hands on his shoulders to calm him down. "Doctor, listen to me. If the Cybermen are here, then we're not safe. We've got to go. We've got to go back to base."

"We've got a base? When did we get a base?"

THE BASE IS, IN FACT, CRAIG'S KITCHEN. Where the Doctor is mixing something weird in a bowl while Aurora supervises with a disgusted face. She doesn't know what's in there, but it doesn't seem too good.

"I'm going down the shop," Craig tells them as he walks past. "We've run out of milk. You know what to do if he cries."

Craig throws a mobile phone to the Doctor and leaves. "No," Aurora tries.

"Me neither!" Craig calls out.

And, the second Craig closes the door, Alfie starts crying. The Time Lords look at each other.

"Oh." They stand up and walk hesitantly to Alfie's room.

The Doctor is the first to enter. "Hello, Stormageddon." Aurora holds back her fond laugh. "It's the Doctor." He gives the baby a thumbs up, but he keeps crying. "Here to help." He grabs a rabbit plushie, and hands it to him. "Shhh. Hey. There, there." Alfie coos. "Be quiet. Go to sleep. Really. Stop crying. You've got a lot to look forward to, you know. A normal human life on Earth. Mortgage repayments, the nine to five, a persistent nagging sense of spiritual emptiness. Save the tears for later, boy-o." He notices Aurora's weird look despite her amused smile and grumbles. "Oh, no. That was... crabby. No, that was old. But I am old, Stormy. I am so old. So near the end."

As if they weren't already broken, her hearts shatter a bit more in Aurora's chest. He told her once, that a Time Lord lived too long. Too much pain. Careful what pain does to you.

The Doctor takes Alfie in his arms, and he stops crying. She gulps, and steps forward, putting her head on the Doctor's shoulder, smiling at Alfie as he takes her finger. "You, Alfie Owens, you've just started, haven't you?" she tells him softly. "And, just so you know, right now, everything's ahead of you. You could be anything." He coos, and she smiles wider, patting his chubby cheek, softly stroking it. "You could walk among the stars. I did." She looks around the room, at the stars and moons made by Alfie bedlight. "They don't actually look like that, you know. They are way more impressive." She takes the Doctor's screwdriver from his pocket, and sonics up a holographic starscape. The Doctor chuckles and Alfie coos happily. "Yeah, cool, right?" She laughs, but it sounds a bit sad. "You know, when I was little like you, my brother told me about the stars. And then I walked among them. I hope you have as much fun as I did, Alfie." From beneath Alfie, she feels the Doctor's finger shyly search for hers. She links their fingers and tightens her grip. "I hope you find the best people to do it with. And I hope they never leave you." She feels the Doctor's lips on her forehead, and that's when she notices tears spilt on her cheeks. She laughs awkwardly, quickly trying to deflect from whatever feelings she's been spilling out loud. "Your dad's trying his best, you know."

Alfie coos.

"Yes, I know it's not his fault he doesn't have mammary glands," the Doctor sighs, his cheek resting on the top of Aurora's head. "No, neither do I. Don't try it on her." Aurora snorts, shaking her head, and they both laugh. There's a short silence. "Aurora, why is there a sinister beeping coming from behind me?"

Aurora is yanked out of the moment when she turns around and sees the Cybermat gnashing its teeth at them. "Get away!" She sonics it. "Come on, take Alfie." She takes Alfie in her arms quickly, taking a blanket with her. "Run! It's just stunned."

They race down the stairs and into the kitchen.

"It's going to be okay," she soothes Alfie as he starts crying. "Good Alfie. Don't worry about anything. We're just going to go outside." She opens the door, but drops the screwdriver as she goes through, to the garden. It's locked inside. She looks at the Doctor, realizing her mistake. "Oops."

They start to pace in the garden, the Doctor calling Craig and Aurora putting Alfie in the blanket. No screwdriver, very real Cybermat in the house. What could go wrong?

"Come on, Craig, pick up, pick up, pick up, pick up." He goes to answer-phone. "Craig? Don't worry. Alfie is fine. But on no account enter the house."

"Doctor!" The scream comes from the house.

Aurora's eyes go wide. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!"

"Help me!"

She thinks quickly, puts Alfie in the baby bouncer, and crashes through the glass door despite the Doctor's screams.

The Cybermat is trying to kill Craig, aiming for his throat. "Where's Alfie?" Craig screams. "Where's Alfie?"

"He's safe. He's safe!"

"Get it off me!"

The Doctor gets inside the room, taking the sonic. "I think I can find the right frequency, shut it down again!"

"Kill it!"

Aurora grabs the Cybermat and yanks, but it keeps slipping through her fingers. "All right, all right, all right! Move!"

Aurora gets out of the way and the Doctor hits the Cybermat with a large pan. It leaps onto him.

"Argh! Baking tray. Baking tray!"

Aurora scrambles for the screwdriver as Craig gets the tray, trapping the Cybermat onto the floor under it.

"Hold it down!"

"Get on with it!"

She finds the frequency. "Stand back!"

Craig gets the tray off of it. Aurora zaps the Cybermat. It stops moving.

They all get up slowly, panting, gasping for breath.

"Success. That was amazing." He kisses the top of her head, panting and dazed, before turning to Craig. "You must be really, really strong. That thing should have had you easily."

"Is it definitely dead?" Craig presses.

"Inactive, yes. Technically never been alive." Aurora makes a face at him, gasping too much to speak, and he winces. "It was playing possum before, to take us by surprise. Bravo."

Craig folds himself in two, panting. "Phew." Suddenly his eyes blow wide and he starts running. "Alfie!"
