Chapter 4 - Intertwined Destinies

-Maya's Point of View-

Gran-Gran hurried outside and I followed right behind her after closing the chest. But I kept the necklace in my hand.

Once I got outside, I saw Katara trying to get the people inside their tents and igloos.

I went to her and asked, "Where's Sokka?!"

"I don't know!" she replied. I looked around to search and I saw him at the entrance of the village near his watchtower.

I was about to call out his name when a big silhouette appeared and it grew bigger and bigger until a large fire navy ship appeared.

Oh no... They really have come...

I suddenly remembered everything that Gran-Gran and I talked about.

Fire nation... Whoever's in there, is one of my kind...

I can't help but feel angry. I just can't really accept this yet. Even if I am a fire nation native, I am still born in this tribe and I swore to protect it with all my life.

The ship then suddenly came crashing in on the ice grounds making a huge crack that went creeping inside the village.

One kid tripped and fell while running away. I noticed that the crack was creeping toward him.

I ran as fast as I could to save the kid and when I got him in my arms I looked over at Katara.

"Katara!" I shouted, and then I handed him the kid I was carrying.

I looked at Sokka and he was still there at the top of the ice wall. The ship was just a few meters far and he was still not moving away from its path.

"SOKKA, YOU IDIOT! GET OUT OF THERE!!!" I yelled. He still didn't move and the ship crashed the wall down. Luckily, Sokka wasn't injured. He was dragged by the ice down to the ground safely.

Once the ship has stopped moving, I ran up to him and gave him a knock on the head.

"YOU'RE CRAZY! DO YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH?!" I yelled.

"AH! THAT HURTS! I WAS JUST TRYING TO—" his sentence was cut when the ship suddenly made a noise as it released pressure from the bottom.

Everyone went outside of their tents and they all stared at the ship with silence. I angrily stared at it too.

We all stood there waiting for something to happen when suddenly, the tip of the ship went coming down where Sokka and I were standing.

"Watch out!" Katara yelled.

I grabbed onto Sokka's collar and I dragged him out of the way. We both fell to the ground and when I looked at the ship again, it now has a pathway.

At this moment, everyone was terrified, but me? I wasn't— I was furious.

Then suddenly armed men came out of the ship— five of them. The one in the middle had no helmet, but he has a big scar on his face, while the rest have their faces hidden.

I can't believe that these are my fellow men. I still don't want to accept it! This is crazy!

They started walking down the pathway, while Sokka and I, cautiously stood up.

Out of nowhere Sokka suddenly started shouting and went running towards the fire nation people.

"Sokka! No, wait!" I said as I tried to stop him but I wasn't able to. He was quick.

He raised his weapon while yelling, but as soon as he reached the one with the scar, that person kicked Sokka's weapon away, followed by a kick in his face.

Sokka landed on a pile of ice making his head get buried inside it.

"Sokka!" Katara shouted. I clenched my fist and I wanted to come at him as well but then suddenly I remembered that I stand no chance against them. So I backed away and went beside Gran-Gran while Katara was on her other side. The other village people were also there.

The one with the scar went closer to us and he started to examine each one of us.

What is up with him? For some reason, I feel irritated just by looking at his face.

"Where are you hiding him?" he suddenly said. Nobody answered him. Nobody knows what he was talking about.

Who are you looking for? You'll have to be specific mister if you want us to answer your questions! He started looking left and right and when nobody answered him still, he stared directly at us.

I don't know if he was looking at me or Katara, or Gran-Gran, but then he quickly reached out his hand giving me the greatest shock of my whole life.

He grabbed Gran-Gran's hood and pulled her in. Katara and I tried to stop him but he was strong.

"He'd be about this age! Master of all elements?!" he suddenly shouted.

I took a step forward trying to get closer to Gran-Gran. Don't he ever dare lay a finger on her or else I'm gonna kick his butt!

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

He looked at me and then he suddenly pushed Grandma towards Katara.

"You... Where did you get that royal necklace?" he suddenly asked. I remembered that I was still holding onto my mother's necklace!

I placed it behind my back and said,

"I-It's none of your business!" I said to him as I stutter. Wait, did he just call it a 'royal necklace'?

He crossed his brows and then he suddenly released fire out of his fist right towards us!

Everyone cried in fear as he did that. I was terrified as well at how much destruction fire can do, but then when I saw the fire, I don't know why but I found it beautiful.

"I KNOW YOU'RE HIDING HIM!" He suddenly shouted.

WHO?! WHO'S HIM?! WHO ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

Then from right behind him, Sokka went charging in again but he misses and was thrown down to the ground.

The scar-face boy blasted fire at him but Sokka was quick to dodge. He then threw his boomerang at him but the firebender was able to dodge as well.

A toddler suddenly grabbed Sokka's spear and yelled,

"SHOW NO FEAR!" then he threw it at Sokka.

Sokka then caught the spear and sprinted toward the firebender, but he broke the spear as soon as he had contact with it. Not only did he break it once, but thrice!

And then when the spear was of no use, he pulled it out of Sokka's grip and started poking Sokka on the head with it three times, before completely breaking it apart and throwing it to the ground.

This should be a serious matter but... i can't help but let out a faint laugh. Seeing how that firebender didn't exert much effort into fighting but Sokka gave his best, I felt like giggling but I remembered that this is no laughing matter.

FOCUS MAYA! FOCUS! I gave myself a faint slap on the cheek and I shook my head.

Just when everything got serious again, Sokka's boomerang came back from the sky and it hit the head of the firebender.

This time I couldn't help it. I let out a small giggle but I quickly covered my mouth so that no one will notice but the firebender saw me and it made him angrier.

I quickly removed my hands from my mouth and stopped smiling. I tried going to the farthest part of the crowd to hide but he was able to grab a hold of my arm.

He pulled me close to him and he raised my hand where I was holding the necklace.

"Where did you get this?" he asked again.

"I already told you. It's none of your business!" I answered. Why does he eagerly want to know?! What is with him?

He let out a big sigh through his nose and then a blade of fire went out of his other hand.

"Maybe this will make you answer me seriously," he said and then he raised his hand while aiming the fire at my face.

Just when he is about to hit me, Aang came in while riding on a penguin and he passed in between the firebender's legs, making him fly into the air and then fall to the ground, face first.

Aang pulled me away from him by grabbing onto my coat, so I fell to the ground as well while being dragged away. The necklace suddenly slipped out of my hand when Aang tugged on me.

"My necklace!" I yelled.

Aang drifted onto the ice and stopped right in front of Sokka, Katara, and the others. The penguin pushed him off and he sat on the ground.

"Hey Katara, Hey Sokka!" Aang said.

"Hi Aang, thanks for coming," Sokka said still looking defeated.

"Hey, Maya!" Aang said as he looked at me.

"Yeah hi, thanks for dragging me away," I said with a straight face.

I stood up and looked back to where my necklace fell. It slid right beside where the fire boy was and when he sat up he grabbed it and gave it to the other soldier.

"Hey, that's mine!" I said and just when I was about to run towards him, Aang held on to my wrist.

"I'll get it for you. Get back, for now, you might get hurt," Aang said in the most comforting way.

I nodded my head and went back to where Katara and Sokka were.

Aang stood in front of the whole village, and the fire boy together with his men surrounded him.

They were all in their battle stance, including Aang. Before they even got close, Aang blew air that scattered snow toward them— to his left, then to his right, and in front, where the scar-boy was standing.

Aang then stood straight and seriously asked, "Looking for me?"

"You're the Airbender? You're the Avatar?" the scar-boy asked back.

WAIT, WHAT?! THE AVATAR?! AANG IS THE AVATAR?! NO WAY!

I mean... I already had a gut feeling he's not just an ordinary airbender, BUT AN AVATAR?!

I was with the Avatar all along! No wonder why sending him away felt like a big mistake. HE WAS THE ONE I WAS WAITING FOR— THE WORLD'S HOPE!

I don't know why but, just the thought of Aang as the Avatar made me smile.

"Aang?" Katara asked.

"No way!" Sokka said in amusement.

"I've spent years preparing for this encounter; training, meditating... YOU'RE JUST A CHILD!" the scar-face shouted. Wow, I've created so many nicknames for him. Who is this boy anyways?

"Well you're just a teenager," Aang said with a confused look.

The scar-faced started firebending and he blasted out fire aimed at Aang.

Aang on the other hand was trying his best to block it with his staff with some airbending but a part of the fire was still able to get out of his control.

The whole village was just right behind him. We were all behind Aang, and the fire was close enough to reach us. All of us cowered in fear as we tried to get out of the fire's reach.

One toddler was even screaming, and I saw Aang's reaction to it— he was terrified. He put out the fire and placed his glider behind him.

"If I go with you, will you promise to leave everyone alone?" he asked and he stood there.

Everyone went silent for a moment and then scar-faced nodded his head.

Two soldiers grabbed a hold of Aang and they started dragging him into the ship.

Katara stepped forward and said, "No Aang! Don't do this!" I stood beside her, trying to stop her from getting any closer.

"Don't worry Katara, It'll be okay! I'll be okay!" he said with a smile, as he was being dragged into the ship.

"I will be back, I promise!" Aang said to Katara and then he changed his gaze to mine. "I'll have your necklace back with me Maya," he continued.

Suddenly the scar-face boy commanded the other two soldiers and said, "Bring in that red-eyed water tribe girl as well."

Then the other two soldiers went towards me, pushed Katara away, and grabbed me by the arms.

"Hey! What are you- Ugh!" I said as they pinned me to the ground and tied both my wrist, behind my back with a rope. They grabbed my arm, made me stand up, and pushed me toward the scar-face firebender.

"Let me go— ugh! Katara, Sokka help!" I yelled.

"Maya!" Katara and Sokka shouted.

Aang then tried to run toward me but he was stopped by the other fire nation soldiers and they tied his wrists behind his back as well.

"Hey! I thought you said you are going to leave everyone alone?!" Aang shouted while still being held by the soldiers.

"Not this one. This girl has something to tell me," The scar-face said as he looked into my eyes.

I looked back at him and boy do I want to break his smirking face right now. If only I can firebend then I would've burned the other side of his face so that his scar is balanced.

"And I believe I have what she wants," he continued while holding my mother's necklace in front of my face.

"Give that back!" I said as I struggled to get out of the soldiers' grip. He gave me an angry look and pulled the necklace away.

"Take them in!" he shouted and then the soldiers started dragging me and Aang inside the ship.

"Ugh! Let me go!" I yelled.

"Take care of Appa for me until I get back!" Aang yelled to Katara.

The scar-faced went ahead of us and he said, "Head a course to the fire nation! I'm going home."

We all stopped and waited for the pathway to close up. I looked back at them and I saw Katara crying while looking at Aang, Sokka with his worried and confused look, and Gran-Gran who was looking at me with a worried look as well.

I was worried too. I didn't know what to do. I looked at Aang and he was looking at Katara with a smile on his face but when the pathway closed, his smile faded.

This day is seriously crazy! Everything was going fine! Until I found out that I was from the fire nation and not really from the water tribes; then some fire nation men came out of nowhere looking for Aang, only to find out that Aang is the Avatar; and now I'm heading towards the fire nation?! PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK!

I hope this is just a dream! Please let this be just a dream!

---------------------------------------------------------

-Kanna's Point of View-

This is a disaster...

The fire nation has caught the Avatar. Also, Maya has been taken away just because of the necklace her mother left for her.

Anika... What life did you live before you got to the south pole?

I couldn't be at ease. I was filled with regrets and my conscience are killing me. Just right after I banished the kid, I found out that he was the Avatar, and just when I revealed to Maya the secrets of her identity, she was taken away by her own kind!

My life for the past years has been silent enough, and now I think there must be a reason why this is all happening.

The Avatar is back, my grandkids found him. They need to take him back.

I ran as fast as I could to prepare their things as well as Maya's stuff. I went inside my tent and I saw the chest that Anika left for her child. I grabbed it and went to find Sokka and Katara.

When I saw the siblings at the edge of the village where the ship went off, I was about to tell them to go after the Avatar and Maya, but I saw Sokka already preparing a canoe behind Katara and lodging their things into it.

"We have to go after that ship, Sokka. Aang saved our tribe, and Maya was taken by that evil scar-face nut head! We have to save them!" Katara said without even noticing that his brother has already planned on leaving.

"Katara I-" Sokka tried to explain but Katara was serious in her thoughts.

"Why can't you realize that Aang is on our side?! I know you don't like Aang but we owe him! And besides, our cousin was taken too! If we don't save them, no one wi—"

"KATARA! Are you going to talk all day or are you coming with me?" Sokka shouted. Katara turned around and when she saw that his brother has already prepared the canoe, her face lit up. She ran towards his brother and hugged him.

"Sokka!" she exclaimed.

Even though you both quarrel most of the time, you two still are great at knowing each other's interests and looking out for each other.

I can't help but smile at them but I figured to play a little bit out of the situation.

"Get in. We're going to save your boyfriend and our cousin," Sokka teased.

"He's not my—" Katara argued but Sokka cut her off again.

"Whatever," he said and then he shrugged.

These two are a wreck without Maya to balance them out and keep them together. I let out a sigh, placed the things I prepared for them behind my back, and then I walked closer to the two of them.

"What are you two doing?" I said with a strict tone and a serious face. Both of them looked back at me with scared looks on their faces. I smiled and then I handed them the stuff.

"You'll need these. You have a long journey ahead of you," I said.

Both of them looked at each other, confused. I gave Sokka the camping beds and then I handed to Katara the red chest that belonged to Maya, as well as her stuff.

"It's been so long since I've had hope, but you brought it back to life my little waterbender," I said to Katara and then I hugged her.

"And you, my brave warrior, be nice to your sister," I said and then I hugged Sokka but he was too shy to hug back.

"Yeah... Okay, Gran..." Sokka said with an awkward smile.

"Aang is the Avatar, he's the world's only chance. Maya your cousin, also has a mystery about her life that intertwines with the fire nation," I explained.

"The fire nation? Gran-Gran what are you talking about?" Katara asked.

"It is best that she told you herself when she is ready. Katara, you have to make sure that this chest will reach her. Do not open it nor take a peek at it because that's her mother's belongings, and they're confidential," I warned.

Katara nodded her head and then I continued with my speech.

"The three of you found the Avatar for a reason. Now your destinies are intertwined with his. Now go take him back, and take your cousin along with you. I want you both to help the Avatar and your cousin Maya to find themselves amidst this war going on," I told them.

They both looked again at each other and then Katara looked at the canoe.

"There is no way we're gonna catch a warship with a canoe," she said.

Suddenly the Avatar's pet bison came out with a roar.

"Appa!" Katara yelled and then she ran towards it.

"You just love taking me out of my comfort zone, don't you?" Sokka complained.

I smiled once more at both of them and truly, they need Maya to be their mediator. Even though she is not their real cousin, I am happy that she was able to be like a real cousin to these two naughty kids.

The two of them started packing their stuff and carried it one by one on the bison's saddle and when everything was done, they both hopped on its back.

"Thank you Gran-Gran. I promise we will be back," Katara said while looking at me from up on the bison's saddle.

"I hope you won't be back soon... Now go! Hurry! Before you lose them!" I said and then the bison swam away.

Be safe my grandkids. I will be waiting for your return.
