chapter 3

"I am your potions professor, Professor Snape," he paused and sucked in quickly, "you will address me as Professor Snape and nothing more." The man slammed five or six textbooks on his desk and looked around the room. Through clenched teeth, he snarled, "Open your Potions & Spells volume one."

The Weasley twins were sitting at the back of the class at the desk across the row from Lylie's desk. They were clearly working on something they were not supposed to be. From Lylie's perspective, it looked like they were doing a sort of origami. She watched them as Snape spoke about the course of the school year. Once the twins looked like they were finished, George pulled out his wand and hexed it quietly.

Lylie's jaw was hanging open as they were about to attempt to throw it into the air.

She spun around to whisper to Aria, "Those boys are going to launch that paper airplane - they hexed it to fly!"

Aria leaned over Lylie to see for herself. The boys were counting down with their fingers, five, four, three, two, one, "Blast off!" the twins whisper-yelled.

Lylie grabbed the side of her desk and bent down as the airplane came zooming toward her, around her head and right for Snape. Snape dodged it just in time as it flew into the wall behind him and crumbled. The look-alikes high-fived under the table and laughed to themselves.

"Which one of you was bold enough to interrupt my class with this insolent behaviour?" Snape's voice was low and raspy.

The boys kept their heads low as they pretended to be reading their textbooks. The twins were funny in their own way and Lylie was beginning to enjoy that.

That night at dinner, Lylie, Aubrey, Aria and Cordelia were eating together in the Great Hall.

Cordelia said with a full mouth, "I'm still hungry and I've had two pieces of meat pie, one big serving of mashed potatoes and vegetables and three bread rolls." Lylie laughed while drinking her cup of pumpkin juice. She was getting along with these girls quite nicely.

Just as Lylie was finishing up desert, she glanced down the long table and saw the red heads, laughing at something their friend Lee said. Lylie took a particular interest in these boys and couldn't place her finger on why. There was something about their energy she was drawn to.

"Well, I'll be going. I'll see you guys later." Lylie stood up abruptly, grabbed her things and hurried off. She was on her way to pass Lee and the boys to get a glimpse of them.

As she was approached them, Lylie heard George say, "Hey boys, she was in potions this morning!" Lylie spun around while she was walking to look back at them, to make sure they were talking about her. Just as she passed, the sleeve of her robe was caught and yanked back.

"Hey! You -" Lylie was about to scold whoever did that but she realized it was Fred.

"Lylie, right?" Fred asked her as he let go of her robe.

"Yes." That's all Lylie managed to spit out. She was caught off guard.

"How'd you like our ruse in potions this morning?" George leaned over the table along with Lee, they chuckled.

"Oh it was ... pleasant. Nice to see Snape get all peeved like that without knowing who did it. You boys got off easy, huh?" Lylie replied.

"Yes, yes I did find it very pleasant, I suppose." George mimicked how Lylie said the word. Lee laughed at George's imitation.

"Well, Lylie was obviously going somewhere so she should be getting on her way." Fred nodded at Lylie as she turned and walked away.

Fred turned back to his friends and instantly resumed talking and chattering. Lylie was just about to go through the doors into the main hallway when she turned her head back toward the boys to steal a glances at Fred. She smiled at them.

As she turned around and was walking out, Fred turned his head toward Lylie to steal a glance at her.

*

In the dorms, Fred was sitting on his four poster bed, resting his back against the backboard of it. He was reading a chapter of Magical Water Plants of the Highland Lochs for Herbology.

Suddenly, Lee said thoughtfully, "What do you think of that girl Lylie?"

Fred looked up from his reading and answered, "I don't know, I've only just met her." Fred calmly looked down at his textbook and continued reading.

"But maybe you think she's fit?" Lee continued his questioning.

Fred looked up from his book and eyed Lee, "Is there something you would like to get out of me?"

Lee raised his eyebrows and answered, "No. Not at all." Fred looked down at his book again.

"But, do you?"

"Do I what?" Fred set his book aside and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Do you think that girl Lylie is lush?"

Fred sighed.

"I just was wondering."

"Why can't you just ask George these questions?"

"Because George is not here at the moment."

"Do you mind? I'm trying to finish reading." Fred picked up his textbook again and resumed reading.

It was quiet for sometime before George came in with Monty Baker, whom the boys were sharing a dorm with. After everything went back to silent and the four boys were occupying themselves with homework or reading, George looked over at Fred and asked, "What do you think of that girl from supper earlier?"

"Bloody hell, you both are ridiculous. What is wrong with you guys? Why do you care?" Fred set aside his book once more and stared at George and Lee.

"I'm sorry, did I miss something?" George sounded astounded to have Fred answer him in such a rude way.

"I just asked him the same question." Lee answered shortly.

Monty chimed in and asked, "Who's this then?"

"She sits behind Rover in Astronomy." Fred replied.

"How is it you know exactly where she sits in Astronomy? We sit in the third row and she sits near the back!" George threw his hands in the air.

"Bugger off. I know where everyone sits. For targets for our pranks, George." Fred countered.

George snorted, "Pathetic, lying to your own brother." George paused, then his eyes sparkled. He added, "Alright then, if you know where everyone sits, where does that girl, Cordelia sit?"

Fred tensed up as he clenched his jaw.

"Just as I suspected."

Fred felt himself growing frustrated. He stood up and marched out of the dorm wearing his blue pyjamas. He stomped down the stairway and into the common room. The room was warm and dim filled with a smokey candle smell as if a flame had just been blown out. The night air swept in through a window cracked open. The breeze circled around quietly and escaped under the floorboards. There was not a single sound. Fred thought the room was empty as he walked in but he noticed a slim figure scribbling on parchment. She was sitting on a cushiony couch against the wall. He slowly walked over to see who was sitting there and he realized it was Lylie.

The floor creaked as she shifted to look up from her writing and simply said, "You."

Fred smirked. He took a seat next her, not too close, but close enough to speak with her. "Don't you know what time it is?" Fred asked.

"Don't you?" Fred smiled slyly.

"It's late. What are you doing up?"

"What are you doing up?"

"I could ask you the same question." Lylie chuckled, "And I did."

"I was speaking with my friends and they were bothering me. I came down here for some peace and quiet. Your turn."

"I'm writing my latest story. I'm a writer, you see. I am constantly writing and reading. I've got tons of works that I hope to publish, though I don't feel as though it could possibly happen." Lylie explained as she look down at her parchment again.

"Why not?" Fred asked.

"I don't think anyone would buy my works."

"Can I see what you're working on?"

Lylie hesitated, she wasn't sure if she wanted anyone reading it yet. But, caught up in the moment, she handed it to him. The room fell silent again as Fred read through Lylie's story. The light breeze bounced off the walls and twirled toward the high ceilings. A few candles were put out from the wind. The room grew dimmer.

He looked up from reading. Fred paused and then smiled, "This is brilliant. I'd buy it."
