Chapter Nineteen | Matrimony

"I Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley

Klaus is drinking a glass of red wine the next time Malia sees him.

"Where are you going?" Klaus looks her up and down. She's wearing a black, classic tea-length dress and a pair of gold earrings.

"Where's Elijah?" Malia asks.

"Out," Klaus takes another sip of his drink.

"Fine," Malia goes to open the door, but Klaus stops her.

"I'm afraid I can't let you go out without supervision."

"What am I, a dog? Let me go, Klaus. I have a gig."

"I'll go with you," he says.

"It's a wedding, you can't just show up."

"I can," he grins, "because compulsion actually works on regular people."

Malia huffed but waited as he got ready.

She tried not to stare as he walked downstairs in a sharp suit and tie.

"Let's go," she commands, finally opening the door to leave.

Klaus sits in the back row of the ceremony, watching as Malia plays Fly Me To The Moon before the ceremony begins. His eyes don't leave her when she plays through a number of traditional ballads, each note so gracefully placed.

Malia switches to Can't Help Falling in Love when the bride walks down the aisle. Against her own will, her eyes drift toward her companion. He is already staring at her, and she quickly turns away.

After the ceremony, the bride and groom go down each row and greet their guests. Malia looks anxiously at Klaus as they get closer and closer to him. He just smirks back at her. She holds her breath as the couple finally approaches him. The couple looks at each other, expecting the other to indicate to them who Klaus is.

"Good to see you again," Klaus pats the groom on his back, getting him to turn toward him. He looks intently into his eyes. "It's been since, what? High school?"

"Yes," the man says, as if in a daze. "High school, that's right."

Klaus turns his gaze toward the bride.

"You should have seen this one. Always the troublemaker."

"Oh really," the bride smiles to her husband. "I thought you were the teachers' pet in high school."

"I was a troublemaker," the groom repeated Klaus's words.

"Congratulations," Klaus finally said, smirking toward the couple.

His gaze shifted past them to a nervous Malia at the piano. She was playing La Vie En Rose, but her shoulders were tense and she sent several nervous glances in their direction. He throws her a wink as the couple moves past him. She shakes her head but breathes a sigh of relief, focusing back on the song.

At the cocktail hour, Malia still plays tunes in the background as the guests mingle. Klaus takes two glasses of champagne from a tray as a server passes, holding one out to her.

"I can't, Klaus. I have to play."

"Beautiful ceremony," he continues seamlessly, setting the glass on the piano.

"That compulsion thing," Malia says, not stopping the song. "That was pretty amazing."

The big band arrives with their instrument cases and audio equipment. The horns would take over for the reception portion of the night, and she would be done. They nod to her once they're all set up, and Malia brings the song she is playing to an end.

She stands and goes to leave, but Klaus pulls her toward him.

"May I have this dance?"

"Dream on," Malia goes to leave again, but Klaus grabs her hand. This time, he accidentally touches her bracelet. He pulls his hand away.

"When did you get a vervain bracelet?" He questions.

Malia sighs.

"My friend is a witch, she charmed it. And she hates you. Can we go now?"

"After I get a dance."

"Fine," Malia gives in, allowing him to take her to the dance floor.

The band was playing a swing, and Klaus instantly began spinning her around.

"How do you know how to do this?"

"Come one, love. I was there when this dance was first invented."

As they danced together, Malia began to laugh. It was so much fun to be spun around, and she hadn't danced like this since before her sister died. He ends the dance by pulling her into a dip against him.

"Okay," Malia laughs as he pulls her back up. "Not bad."

He smiles back at her. They both realize how close they are and how fast they're breathing. Klaus looks between her eyes and lips, then starts to lean in.

"We should go," Malia says suddenly, turning her back to him.
