January Dramas: Top Picks

My Little Happiness:

Story: 10

Acting/Casts: 10

Rewatch Value: 10

Review: This drama is cute, has impeccable chemistry, and has a cliche storyline. Both actor and actress acted in Put Your Head on My Shoulder. They were high school best friends, unfortunately, they don't have chemistry together. In this drama, it is different the male lead improved SO FREAKING MUCH since Put Your Head on My Shoulders. His visuals, acting, chemistry with the female lead have improved A LOT so give it a try, you won't regret it. I fell in love with the entire cast. The story progresses really well and I'm glad I didn't skip this. I didn't fast forward any scenes but instead, I rewatched. The story doesn't get draggy or boring anywhere. The female lead isn't the typical damsel in distress but quite a strong one for a big change from her previous works. The leads have sizzling chemistry and not to mention the second leads too! They have an interesting story. The actors portray their roles perfectly. I don't know how I'll be able to move on from this! Their smiles are so damn freaking contagious OML I can't stop smiling. The second couple has a really good story pace and is not simply rushed just because they had to be together for the sake of being together. I wish they had an entire drama for themselves!

A Girl Like Me:

Story: 9.5

Acting/Casts: 10

Rewatch Value: 9.5

Review: First off, I highly recommend this drama to anyone looking for a historical rom-com. I find myself laughing at almost every episode. Along with the comedy, this show packs several plot reversals that quickly advances the story. The pacing is quite perfect. A few episodes toward the end suffer from some rushed editing, but it does not affect my overall enjoyment too much. I am very impressed by the character development and casting. Many characters have their own backstory and motivation for their actions. Each actor fits their role perfectly. Among the entire cast, I really can't pinpoint a single bad actor. I am especially impressed by Neo Hou who can delicately depict Rong Xia's emotional trauma. The cast members deserve praise for their outstanding performance. The production team has created interesting characters and select the most appropriate actors for them. Ultimately, what makes this show so heart-warming is the union of family. Rong Xia desperately longs for the family that he has lost. He tries to find another father figure but feels empty after certain events. Without realizing it, he internally torments himself over the issue of "family". Thankfully, Ban Hua stops him from self-destruction through warmth and love.

Always Have Always Will:

Story: 9.5

Acting/Casts: 9.5

Rewatch Value: 9.5

Review: A perfect sweet romance to make you forget your woes and just smile for a couple of hours. The leads were so cute and I appreciated the maturity. Here's the thing about this drama, it is your typical high school/college rom-com with some familiar tropes - enemies-to-lovers, second-chance, ML-has-amnesia love-triangles first-love, etc (and I will be quick to say that I sometimes crave just that...) yet, it was light and so well done, I just breezed through it in true delight. Plus, the slow burn was just right - not dragged-out and exactly as long as it should have been. The love story was amazing. This drama is very interesting! I recommend taking a look at it!

Unrequited Love:

Story: 9.0

Acting/Casts: 10

Rewatch Value: 9.0

Review: This drama was a remake of 2019 Unrequited Love. I love this new version, it is better than the old version. It's completely reckless for all those who suffered from their first unrequited /one-sided love. Moreover, its ML being HU YITIAN has completely raised the bar....it is a totally refreshed version of the unrequited series with the same cliches. FL's performance is worth watching her pain, dignity, self respect yet her unconditional love since childhood is laudable. I loved many times when she handled all the situations with her high-end intelligence and witty answers. The best scene of Luo Zhi was, whenever she felt hard times, she diverted her complete attention towards her study instead of making herself depressed. The Luo Zhi shown in this version is totally unlike the previous versions. Here she shows all her emotions unlike being only cold and complicated. In the past version, the ML, I couldn't get his emotion and his feeling towards FL, which annoys me A LOT.

My Favorite Lines:

-洛枳爱生淮南,谁也不知道。生淮南爱洛枳,全世界都知道。(Luo Zhi loves Sheng Huai Nan, no one knows. Sheng Huai Nan loves Luo Zhi, the whole world knows.)

-橘生淮南则为橘,生于淮北则为枳 (The orange tree that grows south of Huai River will bear mandarin oranges, the orange tree that grows north of Huai River will bear trifoliate oranges.)

Weaving a Tale of Love:

Story: 9.5

Acting/Casts: 10

Rewatch Value: 9.5

Review: First, for me, this drama became one of my favorite historical dramas. This drama took me 3 days to finish this drama and I can't sleep. This drama is well written and well played. I didn't think of dropping this because every episode is worth watching. I love the character of the FL although sometimes her carelessness and being naive are something to worried about. I love her determination, her cuteness, and her wittiness that it's not surprising that even the crown prince fell for her deeply. For the ML of course I love his character so much. He's everything a girl can ask for. He's not just good in writing but also in martial arts. I can't stop being a fangirl for Left guard Pei. However, when it comes to someone he loves, I blamed and felt sad a bit because of his protectiveness, it just resulted in greater damage. Thank God, everything still fell into its right place in the end. I love the concept of this drama. I enjoy watching and learning something about embroidery. I love how this drama shows the Chinese culture and traditions, this is why I love watching historical dramas. Finally, I love the ending so much. It is so well written. Everything in the ending of this drama was not rushed and this is what I love most. "Weaving the Tale of Love" was not, It is not draggy and not rushed, and that made this perfect and great for me.
