Chapter one:Manhattan

It's quiet, eerily quiet, but it wouldn't stay that way for long.

As for now, Riley Cassidy is sat quietly drawing in her bedroom, earphones in, blissfully ignorant of the world around her.

The peace is disturbed by the sound of the buzzer to call their apartment goes off, Riley looks up confused nobody calls their home.

Neal Cassidy, the teenagers farther comes over to her.

"Grab your stuff we gotta go?"Neal tells his daughter sternly but kindly.

"Seriously papa?"The teenager asks annoyed and confused.

"Yes, seriously"Neal replies a stern parental look on his face.

Riley sighs but complies, a roll of her eyes to accompany the sigh.

Riley quickly starts packing her belongings into her backpack.

The father and daughter quickly run from the apartment, the escape down the fire escape and start running into the busy streets of New York.

The father daughter duo run all though out New York until they reach an alleyway, someone then spears Neal to the floor.

Riley looks over and sees someone she hasn't seen in years.

Emma Swan.

"No. Neal? Riley?"Emma asks almost in disbelief.

"Emma?"Riley asks.

"Neal?"Emma asks directing her attention to the adult of the two.

"I don't understand. What are you doing here?"Neal asks his ex.

"What am I doing here?"Emma asks with attitude in her voice.

"Yeah"Riley asks.

"I'm not answering anything until you tell me the truth. Are you Gold's son?"Emma asks once again directing her attention to Neal not Riley.

"What are you talking about? Who's Gold?"Neal asks genuinely confused.

"You played me. You're from there. You played me. And he played me. You both played me! You and Gold!"Emma rants.

"Whoa, Emma, slow down! What are you talking about?"Neal asked trying to calm Emma down.

"Who's Gold?"Riley asks Emma.

"Your Grandfather, Rumplestiltskin" Emma replies bluntly.

Riley looks to the her father who looks deathly pale, Riley had heard stories from dad about her grandfather and most of them weren't good.

"He's here?"Neal questions.

"Why else would I be in New York?"Emma replies kinda snarky.

"You brought him to me! Why would you do that?!"Neal questions the blonde angrily.

"Hey! I am the only one allowed to be angry here! Did you know who I was, where I was from, the whole time? Was this just some sort of sick twisted plan? Did - did you even care about me at all?"Emma shouts begging to rant.

Riley begins to fiddle with the straps of her backpack, the tension of the situation starting to make her uncomfortable.

"Emma, do not-"Neal starts trying to tell Emma he does care about her.

"I wanna know! I want the truth, all of it!"Emma declares.

"Fine! We- we gotta get off the street. We can't do it out in the open. I spent a lifetime running from the man. I'm not gonna let him catch me or Riley. There's a cafe down the street. We can talk there"Neal tells Emma.

"I'm not going in a cafe with you! Whatever you're gonna tell me, tell me now"Emma tells Neal.

Riley sighs and rolls her eyes, annoyed by the whole situation she decides to pipe up.

"No, the cafe will be better. Don't worry you continue to yell at papa when we get there"Riley replies snarkly before walking off.

"Wow, she grew up"Emma says aloud.

"Yeah, she's not a little kid anymore"Neal replies and then follows after his daughter.

After a short walk the trio enter a cafe, the trio sit down at a table in the corner.

"Well, what do you want to know, Emma? You want the truth? Ask away"Neal asks.

"Did you know who I was when we met?" Emma asks him.

"If I had, I wouldn't have gone near you"Neal tells her honestly.

"Come on"Emma replies not really believing Neal.

"Come on?" Come on, what? I was in hiding. I had a toddler to take care off. I came here to get... a-away from... all that crap"Neal replies to the blonde honestly.

"So if you didn't know, then you were just using me. You just needed someone to take the fall for all the watches that you stole"Emma tells him.

Riley sits their quietly, whilst she doesn't remember it fully being so young at the time, she does know about her father's previous criminal life.

"I wasn't using you. When we met, I didn't know. I found out"Neal tells Emma honestly.

"How?"Emma asks cautiously.

"When I went to sell the watches... I ran into a friend of yours --August"Neal replies.

Riley watches as Emma face becomes even more angry.

"You left me... and let me go to prison because Pinocchio told you to?"Emma asks Neal angrily.

"Emma"Riley says cautiously.

"I loved you, both of you"Emma tells the two.

"I-I was, um, I was tr... I was trying to help you"Neal tells Emma nervously, genuinely believe he did the best thing for Emma.

"By letting me go to jail?"Emma asks.

"By getting you home"Neal replies to her.

"Are you telling me... that us meeting was a coincidence? How the hell did that happen if it wasn't in your plan or your father's?"Emma questions the two.

"Think about it. He wanted you to break the curse. Us meeting, that could've stopped it. Maybe it was fate"Neal tells the woman honestly.

"You believe in that?"Emma asks confused.

"You know, there's not a ton I remember about my father that doesn't suck, but he used to tell me that there are no coincidences. Everything that happens happens by design, and there's nothing we can do about it. Forces greater than us conspire to make it happen. Fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it, the point is, maybe we met for a reason. Maybe something good came from us being together"Neal says with hope in his voice.

"No. Not that I can think of. I just went to jail. That's it. Doesn't matter now, I'm over it. And you"Emma says but with clear emotion in his voice.

Emma stands up and prepares to leave.

"Why do you wear the keychain that papa got you?"Riley asks piping up.

Emma looks down at the keychain before pulling it down and placing it on the table.

"To remind myself to never trust someone again"Emma starts.

Emma looks down for a moment.

"Come on. I made a deal with your father I'd bring you to him"Emma says turning to Neal.

"You made a deal with him?"Neal asks.

"Fantastic"Riley says sarcastically.

"Yeah, and I'm upholding my end"Emma tells him.

"No, no you don't have to. You know that"Neal tells her.

"I know"Emma tells him honestly.

"Okay. So this should be really easy for you. Tell him that you lost me. Tell him you can't find me. You do that, you never have to see us again"Neal tells Emma.

Emma agrees to this and just heads off.

Riley looks to her father.

"What will happen to Emma if your father finds out she lied?"Riley asks.

"I don't know Biscuit"Neal replies.

"We have to help her"Riley tells him.

"What!"Neal says.

"We have to help Emma, if she gets hurt because you didn't go and see your farther, you will never be able to live with yourself"Riley tells her dad honestly.

Neal looks at his fourteen year old daughter and realises she right.

"I hate when your right"Neal tells her jokingly.

"Love you too papa"Riley tells him.

The duo leave the cafe.

A few minuets later, after a short walk through the busy streets of New York, Riley and Neal arrive back at their apartment, Neal turns towards his daughter.

"I want you wait outside ok"Neal tells his daughter seriously.

Riley rolls her eyes.

"I'm not a little kid papa, I can handle anything"Riley tells her dad.

"Please Riley'Neal begs.

"ok papa"Riley tells him.

The two then hear raised voices coming from inside their apartment, hearing the voice of his father shouting sends shivers down Neal's spine.

Neal charges into their apartment,Riley waiting just behind the door.

"Hey! Leave her alone"Neal shouts.

Neal looks at his father and then to Emma.

"Bae?"The voice of Rumpelstiltskin a.k.a Riley's grandfather asks his son.

Neal nods.

"You came back for me?"He asks his son.

"No. I came to make sure you didn't hurt her. I've seen what you do to people who break deals"Neal tells his farther.

"Please, Bae, just let me talk?"The older man asks.

"I have no interest in talking to you. You can go"Neal tells him.

"I'm not going anywhere"The older man says definitely.

"Get out of my apartment!"Neal yells rasing his voice.

Riley decides now is the time to make herself know, trying to make sure no one gets hurt.

"Papa calm down"Riley says making herself know to everyone in the apartment.

Neal turns and looks to his daughter.

"I am calm Riley"He tells her.

The older man looks at the teenager.

"Who's this?"Gold asks.

"She's my kid"Neal tells him.

"Neal..."Emma says piping up.

"Emma, I got this"Neal tells her.

"You two know each other. You two know each other. How?"Gold asks the two adults.

"You sent me chasing after him"Emma says trying to defend herself.

"No, no, no. Stop it! You're lying. How do you two know each other?!"Gold demands.

A young boy Henry mills, then enters the room with the adults and Riley in.

"Mom? What's going on?"Henry asks his mother.

It doesn't take Riley long to figure out what is happening.

"Who is this?"Neal asks cautiously.

"My son"Emma replies.

"What?"Neal asks.

"Is that Baelfire? Who is she?"Henry asks.

"I need you to stay in the other room for a little while longer, okay? Come on"Emma says trying to usher Henry away.

"Wait. How old are you?"Neal asks the boy.

"Don't answer him"Emma tells her son sternly.

"How old are you, kid?!"Neal asks rasing his voice this time.

"Eleven! Now why is everyone yelling?"Henry yells confused by what is happening.

"He's eleven?"Neal asks looking at the boy then back to his daughter.

"Mom?"Henry asks confused.

"Is this my son?"Neal asks.

Riley looks at the eleven year old and the confused looked on his face, Riley always wanted a little brother so with shock in her voice she turns to Emma.

"He's my brother isn't he?"Riley asks purely for confirmation of what she knows is true deep down.

Henry turns to the adult and teenage girl.

"No. My dad was a fireman. He died"Henry tells them clinging to the lie his mother told him.

He then looks to his mom.

"That's what you told me. You said..."Henry says looking for reassurance.

"Is this... my son?"Neal asks again.

Emma crouches down to talk to Henry face to face.

"Yes"Emma tells him.

Henry backs away from his mother upset and sad, He then ran away from her.

Emma tries to go after him.

"No, let me go talk to him"Riley says stopping Emma.

"Riley"Emma says cautiously.

"Let me, you three clearly have a lot to discus"Riley tells the adults.

She the heads out the window, and onto the fire escape, she finds Henry looking out to the New York streets.

Riley stands next to him.

"Penny for your thoughts?"Riley asks her newly found out younger brother.

"So, your my big sister?"Henry asks.

"Yep, my name is Riley"Riley tells the him.

"I'm Henry"Henry says introducing himself.

"Nice to meet you half-pint"Riley tells him jokingly.

Riley and Henry laugh.

"You know I always wanted a little brother, someone to annoy me, someone to take my stuff and immediately lose it, Someone to play games with stuff like that"Riley tells him.

"I always wanted a older sister"Henry tells Riley honestly.

Riley puts her arm around Henry and pulls him to a side hug.

Emma then approaches the two.

"Riley, could I talk to Henry alone please"Emma asks the teenage.

Riley turns to Henry.

"I'll be inside if you need anything"Riley tells Henry.

Riley climbs back through the window and into the apartment.

Neal enters the main era of the apartment at the exact same time, Riley notices the sadness on his face.

"Are you okay papa?"Riley asks him.

"Yeah, I'm ok Biscuit"Neal tells his daughter before pulling her into a hug.

Neal holds onto his daughter tightly, scared to lose her.

Emma then climbs through the window and sees the farther and daughter hugging.

"He wants to meet you"Emma tells Neal.

"You weren't gonna tell us about him, were you?"Riley asks Emma.

"No, I wasn't"Emma tells them honestly.

"Yeah, well, he's my kid, too, so you don't get to make that decision by yourself anymore"Neal tells Emma bluntly.

"Great. Go talk to him, then"Emma starts.

Neal walks towards the fire escape so he can go meet his son.

"But... don't break his heart"Emma tells him.

"Trust me, I'm not gonna do to him what he did to me"Neal tells her promising to never hurt his kids.

"And what you did to me"Emma tells him.

Neal sighs.

"Okay. I get it. We're all messed up. But I'm doing right by Riley so why don't we both try to do the same for Henry"Neal tells Emma.

"All right"Emma says, Neal the heads out of the fire escape to see his son.

Emma turns to looks a Riley.

"I missed you a lot"Emma tells her honestly.

"Yeah me too"Riley tells her before heading into her bedroom.
