Chapter 39: Announcement

Today Shourya had taken the day off work and was going to take Meera to the gynecologist for a normal check and an ultrasound to see how far along they were. Initially, she was terrified, but when they searched online, she calmed down realising that there were no needles and intense tests. Yet. They were going to come later, which she was scared about, but she knew she would pull through for their child.

Once they would get the confirmation from the doctor today, they would announce it to their family. There were just looking for confirmation. Ever since Shourya found out about the pregnancy he's been treating his wife like a petal, as if she has suddenly been unable to do the simplest of things. A prime example is this morning when they were leaving.

Shourya had decided that she could not walk down the stairs by herself, so he had picked her up and carried her down the stairs, out the door and sat her in the front seat, buckled her in before driving off. On the way there, Shourya could sense Meera's nervousness about the journey of pregnancy but she was putting up a strong facade. He didn't want to ask yet, he knew she needed time to process this herself.

So he just picked up her hand and held it tight. Soon the couple arrived for their appointment, they completed all the formalities and were waiting for the doctor to call them in.

"Mr and Mrs Singhania!"

The couple looked up at the female nurse who was standing near the doorway of the waiting room. The pair got up and followed the nurse inside, she got Meera ready into a coverall and lifted the top to expose her belly.

"Doctor Khanna will be here just in a moment."

After a few minutes, a man walked through the door, holding a clipboard and pen and greets the couple.

"Hello, I'm Doctor Khanna, and you must be Mr and Mrs Singhania."

Meera nods her head and introduces herself and her husband by their first names and smiles brightly at her husband, who was a little distracted by the MALE doctor who was apparently going to be doing their checkups.

"Shall we get started?"

Shourya tries his best not to glare at the MALE doctor smiling at HIS pregnant wife.

"Yes, please!" Meera beams at the doctor and reaches for her husband's hand. Shourya and Meera watch the black screen as the doctor rubs the cool gel onto Meera's stomach.

"So we'll just take a look at a few things, see if you are actually pregnant or not. There is a chance that the pregnancy test can be false. We'll take a look at the sack and the embryo/ fetus. We'll also be able to see if you are expecting one baby or twins or even triplets. Based on the size of the sack, we'll be able to estimate how far along you are. We may even be able to hear a heartbeat. Does that sound okay?"

Doctor Khanna uses the transductor along Meera's abdomen with one hand and applied light pressure with the other. After a while, he turns to the couple and announces that they are indeed pregnant.

"Congratulations to both of you! And by the looks of it, there are two sacks, which means you are having twins!"

Meera beams and Shourya who has held her hand, he leans forward to give her forehead a kiss before turning to the doctor, "can we see the babies?"

Doctor Khanna points to the screen before moving the transductor around. "There you are, I would estimate you are 8 to 9 weeks along, and if you give me a moment, I'll be able to have to hear their heartbeat."

Meera and Shourya gazed at the blurry black-and-white ultrasound. Their babies. Twins!

"I'll print these out for you to take," the nurse said.

And soon the couple were waiting with their breaths held and complete silence in the room as they waited for the doctor to do his magic so they can hear their children's heartbeats.

They held each other's hand and the nurse held up Shourya's phone to capture the moment.

The silence was soon filled by two soft thudding sounds. The sound immediately caused more tears to well in the soon-to-be parents' eyes as they watched the heart rate on the monitor. Meera squeezed her husband's hand tighter before looking his way. The smiles don't leave their faces as the moment is captured on the phone forever. Another memory they would share with their first child. Children actually.

"Pata nahi kyun, pr keh raha tha ki sab yahan aajao."

(I don't know why but he said to come here.)

The Singhania's were gathered at the Rao's as Shourya had requested. They were eagerly waiting for the couple to arrive and as soon as they did, they were bombarded with questions.

"What is going on?"
"You're scaring me beta!"
"Bhai! Lunch ka plan hai kya? That's why we're here."

(Are you planning a lunch outing?)

Shourya and Meera laughed at everyone before quietening down the group. He pulled out an envelope and handed it to Rohini.

"Maa, open it."

Rohini scrunched her eyebrows and everyone eagerly waited to see what it was. Rohini opened the large envelope, took out the report and was about to read through it when a small black image dropped to the floor, Suraj picks it up as Rohini reads the report.

Her eyes water with happy tears as she passes the reports to Suraj, who passes them along to Raj.

"Aare, saaf saaf bolo bhai kya baat hai! Yeh pata nahi kya kagaz sa dekh rahe ho."

(Oh, just say clearly what is going on! I don't know what this paper you're passing around.)

"Haan aur maa, aap ro kyun rahi hai?"

(Yes and maa why are you crying.)

Rohini and Suman hug each other and giggle as Raj and Suraj hug each other. Shourya goes and kneels in front of his grandmother and tells her the news.

"Dadi, aap par dadi baane wali hain!"
(Grandma, you're about to become a great-grandma.)

Hearing the news the group erupts into a roar of cheers and everyone congratulates and hugs each other.

"No way! I'm going to be a chachu! Like Neel chachu is!"

"Aur mein bhua baane wali hun!"

(And I'm going to be a paternal aunt!)

"Hi everyone, I am Muskaan maasi! And I'm going to make this baby the naughtiest like me!"

Meera laughs before saying, "not baby."

The group stops the cheers and looks at Meera.

"Bhabhi what?"
Meera giggles and says, "hmmm, not a baby, But two babies!"

This causes an even louder cheer amongst the families as Anushka goes to get something sweet.

Virat hugs his precious sister and pecks her forehead. The little sister he raised like a child was about to have two of her own.

The room was filled with smiles, laughs and tears as they celebrate the news.

"Aacha, sab ko pata hai ki humare ghar mein jab bhi koi aachi news hoti hai hum ek hi dhaba mein jaakr lunch krte hain. Toh get ready, abhi hum sab wahin jaa rahe hai. Mene phone kr ke table bhi organise krwa liya hai."

(Alright, everyone knows that whenever we have any good news, we all go to that dhaba for lunch! So get ready, I've already called and organised a table for all of us.)
