Chapter 6: Gymnasium

Later that day, Kevin and Double D made their way to the school Gymnasium. The walk down the school corridor was a rather silent one. Double D clutched the strap on his bag, feeling a little nervous. He would occasionally looked over at Kevin, without being obvious, of course. He noticed that Kevin's expression wasn't the same cold, stern expression he normally wore any time the Eds were within 3 feet of him. It was somewhat... Softer. As if he wasn't fussed by Double Ds presence. Or perhaps he just couldn't care less about the whole ordeal.  But if he wasn't interested, why would he agree to it? "Yo, Double Dork."

And we're back.

"U-Uh, yes Kevin?" Double D responded. He had gotten lost in thought, and almost forgot that Kevin was right next to him.

"Do you know what sports were gonna be checking out?" Kevin asked, looking over at Double D. The dorky teen stared down at the floor, a focused look on his face. "Now that you mention it, I actually don't recall seeing any information about the sports we would be participating in..." He said, with a small shrug of his shoulders. He may not have remembered what he read, but that may be because of him blacking out after reading the note. Kevin huffed, and rolled his eyes. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a slip of paper. It was the note.

Kevin skimmed the paper, not saying a word. After a moment, he sighed and placed it back into his pocket. "Well, there ain't anything on the note about it either." He said. A chuckle followed not long after. "Guess we'll just have to wait and see what's in store, huh?" He said, keeping his eyes straight ahead. Double D slightly looked up at Kevin, a smile of his own playing on his face. "Y-yes, I guess we will." He said with a small chuckle. After some time, the two teenagers had arrived at the doors of the schools gymnasium. For Kevin, this would've been a breeze. But for Double D, it was a struggle.

Every time he had to pass through these doors, a wave of anxiety would crash over him, bringing back memories. Horrible memories. Double D hesitantly reached forward, and placed his hand on the silver door handle. It felt cold against his clammy palm. The two stood there for a moment, not saying a word to one another. Double D couldn't bring himself to open the door. The gymnasium only ever brought him embarrassment, or pain. Sometimes, both, if he were lucky.

"Dude, what's taking you so long?" Kevin grumbled, annoyed. No response came from the nerdy boy. Double Da eyes didn't look away from the handle. Before something happened.

A hand was placed over his, unexpectedly. Double D blinked a few times, and followed the arm back to its owner. To his surprise, it was Kevin. "You just grip the handle," he explained, his hold around the door handle, and Double Ds hand slightly tightening. Double D only stared at their hands, still not saying a word.

"And open it, like this." Kevin finished, pushing the door open. Once the door had opened, he removed his hand from over the dorks. "See? Was that so hard?" Kevin said with a smirk, before walking in. Double watched Kevin for a moment, wide eyed. He couldn't believe it. That was practically the first time Kevin laid a hand on him without physically abusing him. It felt... Strange. But he didn't complain.

The boy looked around the gymnasium, and saw various students setting up equipment, doing stretches, or sitting in the bleachers, chatting. These must've been some of the other kids who were helping out. Double D swallowed hard, and walked into the large room, gripping onto the strap on his bag. As he passed different groups, he felt several gazes fall on him, and that made him a little uneasy. Sure, he was never a very sporty kid, let alone, an expert. And many students knew this.

This is probably what triggered many of the stares. After what felt like the longest trek in his schooling life, he had made it to the other side of the gymnasium, and sat down at the bottom of the bleachers, resting his head in his hand. "Why did I ever think I could do this...?" He sighed, with a small shake of his head. Before long, Kevin dropped himself down beside the nerd. "Hey, don't sweat it, man. Half the kids here probably have no idea what they're doing... unlike me." Kevin smirked. Double D couldn't help but roll his eyes.

"So, don't think you're the only one." He said, glancing over at Double D. He couldn't help it, but a small, crooked smile appeared on Double Ds face.

Kevin shrugged his shoulders. "Besides, I'm sure the new sports aren't THAT bad." He said, before standing, and walking off, to one of the numerous coaches. Double D laughed quietly. "He's right!" He said to himself. "How hard could this possibly be?"

Looks like he spoke too soon.

Two students walked passed him, gossiping about something.

"Dude, did you hear about Kyle?"

"What? No, what happened?!"

"James took him out in a game of football! He got rushed to the hospital with a broken rib, and a fractured collarbone!"

"No way!"

As the students walked away, Double Ds eyes grew wide in fear. Yeah... how hard could it be?
