Hired

"Damn, I'm bored as hell," I muttered to myself while eating cereal. I'm searching for a job somewhere that doesn't involve killing in such a brutal manner. Even though I don't feel much when killing another person, I get paid to kill with no remorse or guilt... But still, He feels like I could do something other than that and help people. I might have some meaning in my life if I do. Maybe I should go to that Laminax Labs place or whatever. Seems pretty shady but hey. it is better than nothing and beats working at some fast-food garbage. I wear my favorite piece of clothing. My black hooded cloak pretty much covers my eyes but I can still see. It's just any other person can't see my eyes.

After a few hours in an awful interview! I got the job. I managed to convince the man to keep my cloak and two brief cases saying that they are for my room in the lab which was a lie. They gave me a bat since I'm working as a guard around this place.  I sighed, "I knew they would give me a shitty weapon to defend myself" My hunch was right. Which is why I sneaked in some weapons.  I even have a grappling hook attached to my arm under the cloak.

I sneaked in my trusty revolver and a bow mostly because I could use something more silently.  Also brought some scrap and explosives to make some dangerous toys. Even though it could be an ordinary job. I just only focus on what could go wrong. A scientist notices me and walks up to me with a smile. "Hey! You're the new guy, right? I'm here to give you a tour and... why do you have that cloak and those briefcases?"

"Well, I feel more comfortable with this. Anyways can I get a tour please?" Twelve said calmly.

"Sure thing. It's just that uhh... your cloak covers your eyes and it kinda makes me feel uneasy that's all" The scientist chuckled a bit. We walk around the lab while the scientist explains the various landmarks, The pool room, and an area with gas canisters. Then I notice something that catches my eye. A goo creature inside of a cell is being researched by two other scientists.

"What is that? It looks like a big slime dog" I calmly said but still seemed to be interested in this creature. The creature is standing on its two legs and looks like a lime-colored dog or hound.

"That is a gootraxian. It is a slime hound and this is what we are researching at Laminax Labs." I got interested even more because of this fact. Are there more of these? Can they talk or be intelligent? There are so many questions forming in my head right now.

"They seem to act on instinct but some can be intelligent and can understand human language sometimes but they sadly cannot speak." The scientist explains and then starts to look a little sad, "They were human once before you know... I don't like how we treat them here but we can't deny our orders." The scientist looks at me waiting for my response.

"Why do you do it then?" I said, The scientist sighs and responds with a serious tone this time.

"I need the money and I want to give my daughter the best birthday. She is going to turn 8 next month." He then looks away for a second and looks back at me. "Those gootraxians can infect other people which is a painful process. I feel bad for those who got infected and are getting experimented on" I feel like the scientist is trying to say is to not treat these things like animals.

"Okay," I said and continue to walk with him. after a few minutes of silence, I decided to say something.

"Anyways what is your name? You never really introduced yourself. Oh, and my name is Twelve if you are wondering" I said.

The scientist looks at him and starts to speak, "I'm Jacob or just Dr. J" The scientist continues walking down towards a garden. "This is the garden. A lot of the plant-type gootraxians try to break out to water the plants here. They like plants and I mean like a lot."

"Why are they locked up? They don't seem all that dangerous" I said with a little confusion. These guys don't look like they could hurt anyone well maybe they could if they felt threatened.

"That's what I thought so too until one of them gave a flower to one of our employees and he got infected. I know the creature didn't mean to but we can't take any chances after that"

After a few more minutes the tour comes to an end with the final destination. "This is the staff break room. It scans your face and then opens the metal door or someone inside can open it for you." Dr. J says in a happy tone seemly liking Twelve a little even if he doesn't show his eyes or emotion.

"Okay, Thanks I will keep this in mind" Twelve calmly said before going to his room to leave his stuff there and relax a little before his shift starts.

—--------------------------------------------------------

My shift has started and...

"Who knew standing in one spot could be so boring" I muttered under my breath. There hasn't been anything interesting yet and wanted something to happen. He is just guarding nearby a metal door containing a gootraxian called a catte apparently. The other guards seem to not have guns and it is against the rule since it could cause damage around the facility but I don't care and brought my revolver anyways safely hidden on my waist covered by the cloak. Before the break is about to start. The lights start to flicker and then the lights go out. All of the cell doors are open. Twelve is in complete darkness. The only weapon he brought with him was a revolver. The catte ran out and escape trying to find an exit. It seems intelligent enough to try to find an escape route and hide away. Twelve still sits there waiting for his break to start while chaos is happening all around him.

"Finally some action" I whispered to myself. The catte notices him and looks at him for a bit. Confused about why Twelve isn't panicking or anything like that.

-Catte's Pov

I watch the human leaning against the wall unfazed by the chaos of the blackout. Humans usually attack sight without thinking or run away if they are cowards but this one is different. Should I try to infect him? No! He is way to calm about this which is suspicious and I can't even see his eyes. I can't tell if he is looking at me or not.

catte then backs away and continues to stare at the human which was Twelve. Twelve looks at catte which makes him run away afraid of him.

He is way too calm for this situation, catte thought to himself. catte sprints off into the crystal cavern on all fours.

-Twelve's Pov

That was odd. I was wondering why it ran away. When I was about to think of another question if those things were once human because of Dr. J informing me on what they do. It is break time and I decide to forget about it and go towards the Staff Break Room. The door was wide open because of the blackout. I walk inside and saw nobody there. They all probably went to one of the emergency bunkers.

I heard breathing behind one of the couches and I walked toward it. A female with blond with long hair and red ruby eyes. The scientist immediately stood up from behind the blood-red colored couch to try to hit what she thought was a gootraxian with a bat. I immediately grab the tip of the bat and yanked it from her hands.

"Oh god, I am so so sorry! Please forgive me I thought you were one of the test subjects that got out or worse a panther." The scientist was shaking from how afraid she was about all of this while I am calm and looked emotionless about the situation.

"I forgive you I guess," I said calmly

The scientist was crying a bit but tries to be quiet because of the threats nearby. "Thank you but we should really get out of here before a panther finds us and tear us apart." I got interested. What's a panther I thought. Before I could speak a black shadowy figure with yellow and red eyes looked at us with murderous intent. The female scientist starts to shake from fear.

"We are so dead!" The scientist sobs. I quickly get out my revolver and shoot it between the eyes. It collapses presumably dead. The scientist was surprised at how accurate I was but more surprised that I brought a gun with him!

"You killed it.. where did you get that?? How? when?" The scientist quickly said in her trembling voice. I just ignore her and examine the creature. It is a black cat with really sharp claws. It must be the panther she was talking about.

"We should exit out through the elevator," I said. The scientist is amazed at how I was so calm in this terrifying blackout. She answers my question anyways.

"I a- already tried to go there... b- but it seems to be broken and there is goo all over it." The scientist begins to tear up again. "We're never going to get out of here!!"

"You cry too much Ms," I said trying to make her laugh somehow, clearly I did a terrible job. The scientist looks up at me with a little anger in her eyes. She goes to pick up the bat that I grabbed from her and angrily looks at me.

"How the hell can you be this fucking calm!!!" The scientist was being a little loud. She is so confused about how this man (me) can be this calm about this disaster. Is he insane??

I just reply "Do you want me to be afraid?" The scientist starts to think a little and just replies in a soft low voice...

"no..." The scientist starts to think about what to say to him. "My name is Ruby. What's yours?" She couldn't think of anything else other than that.

"Well, I'm the new guard here and you can call me Twelve." I then start to walk out leaving Ruby behind while she is still shaking. She then hides behind the couch again thinking if I will be okay.

I just continue to look around and notice a panther biting the flesh of a poor guard. I just shrug it off and continue to find a flashlight or any kind to see better in the darkness. I find myself in a large cave area with a lot of glowing crystals. The big shiny rocks are all pearl white. Before I could comment on the beauty of the cave a low growl is heard behind me, well crap. A mean lizard looking at me with a pair of purple glowing goggles. It does not look so friendly...

"You seem nice" I mutter to myself before leaping out of the way of the beast trying to pounce on me. "I was wrong!" I said getting up and staring at the lizard.

This is going to be a hell of a shift huh...
