Vegetable Soup (Winter)

A loud sneeze was heard in the quiet kitchen.

"Damn it..." Y/N muttered under her breath as she wiped her nose with the tissue.

She leaned behind and rested her forearm on the dining table as her eyes noticed the wall clock. The clock was showing 8 p.m. and it was almost time for her girlfriend to come home.

Just then, the front doorbell rang, and a light knock was heard. Y/N stood up while huffing out loud due to a lack of energy in her body. She staggered towards the door and turned the doorknob to be greeted by the woman she loves.

"Hey, baby!"

"Hey, Win, "Y/N said, trying to put a smile on her exhausted face.

Winter, her girlfriend for more than five years and still going strong, was a hard worker. She was a creative designer at her company and Y/N loved the dedication she put into her work.

Her personality was one of the many reasons for Y/N to fall in love with her.

Winter walked past Y/N and she closed the door behind her. Y/N turned around to see Winter waiting for her with a broad smile on her face as her blazer was neatly folded in her hand and her bag was in her other hand.

"I missed you today, "Winter said with her cheerful voice.

Y/N smiled and nodded, saying, "I missed you too, but how about you get to freshen up first."

Winter instantly kept her bag and her blazer on the table near the shoe rack and pulled Y/N by her hand. She wrapped her arms around her waist and stared at her with adoration. Y/N's heart skipped a beat at that but her head was now banging all of a sudden.

"No, baby. I want to kiss you first, "Winter said as she leaned a little closer at which Y/N ducked her head down.

Winter kept her finger beneath her chin and made her look up as she inclined forward to kiss her. However, she was met with Y/N's hand instead, causing her to pull apart with utter confusion.

"Y/N? What happened?" she asked.

Y/N in an instant sneezed to her side and in her elbow crook, startling Winter slightly.

"I have a cold, Win... A bad one, "Y/N said and she pulled away from the hug, going to the kitchen to get herself another tissue.

Winter looked at her girlfriend as her heart sank at her dull health. Following her, she stood behind her and rubbed her palm on her back as worry took in her demeanor.

"Do you think we need to go to a doctor? I'm ready if you want to--"

"No, Win, "Y/N said, her voice hoarse. "I'll be fine... I just need some rest. That's it."

"Are you sure?" Winter asked, uncertain.

Y/N turned around and gave her an assuring smile, replying, "Yes, Win. I'm sure. Don't worry."

Winter sighed out loud and said, "Okay... Let's get you to bed then."

She held onto her shoulder and held her hand to help her to the bedroom, but Y/N resented, saying, "But, what about your dinner?"

"I'll make it. Now, let's go, "Winter replied and begrudgingly Y/N obliged.

Opening the door to the bedroom, Winter made the bed for Y/N and carefully laid her down, covering her with the duvet. She shuffled through the bedside table drawer to find some medicines.

"It's in the other one, "Y/N said and Winter looked at it to find the pack of tablets.

"Here, have this. You'll feel better, "she gave Y/N the medicine and a glass of water, helping her through while stroking her head.

"Thank you, "Y/N replied as she again laid down and covered herself with the duvet.

Winter stood up and looked around the room, saying, "I'll go and freshen up. Don't get out of bed unless it's something very important. Okay?"

Y/N smiled with closed eyes and replied, "Okay."

"Good."

With that said, Winter picked out her comfy clothes and went to the bathroom to get herself a warm shower. After 15 minutes, she walked out and saw Y/N resting with her arm over her forehead.

She quietly got her hair done and then padded her way out the room to the kitchen. Winter was hungry too and she decided to make Y/N some soup too, to help her soothe down the cold.

"Let's do it, "she rolled her sleeves up and looked around the kitchen.

But, she found an empty counter with a stove sitting there and everything else in its place. Winter was now moreover in confusion because she realized that she didn't know how to make soup.

"I think I may have a problem..." she muttered under her breath and smacked her forehead with disappointment.

Truth be told, Winter was never a kitchen person. She never cooked, unless it was an emergency, and didn't try to learn it also. She was busy, busy building her career and reputation and being amazing in the field she wanted.

But, her cooking skills were far away from being good. It was worse.

When Y/N came into her life, she never felt the need to cook herself. Y/N was an amazing cook and she loved every dish that Y/N made. Perks of being a girlfriend of a Restaurant owner. Y/N was very well known in the town and everyone admired her for her cooking skills.

But, she loved Y/N too and wanted to make a soup for her to get better. Winter never worked in the kitchen, yet she would do it. Just for Y/N.

So, with a determined mind, Winter took out her phone and found some YouTube videos on how to make a great vegetable soup. She kept her phone on the counter and looked around to find a pot similar to the one the lady showed in the video.

"Where do you keep pots like that?" Winter asked as she opened every kitchen cabinet.

After 10 minutes of searching, she found one. "Aha! There you are, " she exclaimed and kept the pot on the stove.

Now as said in the video by the lady, Winter took out all the vegetables she had in the fridge and kept them on the counter. She listened to the lady again and turned around to the sink, washing the vegetables thoroughly.

"Okay..."

Winter wiped them all with tissue paper and then took a knife same as the lady in the video had and took the chopping board of the hook. One by one, Winter started to cut the vegetables and for the first-timer, she thought she was pretty good.

"Damn, I must be born talented, "she said out loud with a smile on her face.

However, when she was done with the vegetables, she found that all the pieces and slices were uneven. Her expression turned into a disappointed one and she shook her head.

"I'm an idiot..."

Getting to the next step, she started rummaging through the different containers to find the small leaves that the lady in the video called "Bay leaf".

"Now, where are they..."

After struggling for 10 more minutes, Winter found them and she started the stove, pouring the oil in the pot, thinking it was a little too much. She put in her bay leaves and garlic and spring onions.

Stirring them and then she saw that they started to get brown. Panicking, she lifted the pot to prevent them from burning down.

"How do you even know when to add the other things?" she frustratingly asked and looked at the video.

Keeping the pot again on the stove, she added the vegetables and stirred them. Her eyes juggled between the video and her one dish. Then, she added water and again stirred it.

"And then cover it until the veggies are slightly tender, "the lady said as Winter put the lid on the top.

Looking at her smartwatch, she waited for a few minutes and lifted the lid. The warm steam hit her face suddenly as she staggered back while fanning her face.

"Jeez..."

Then, she boiled the white powder, also called corn starch into another small pot and stirred it. Completely forgot about the veggies that were boiling with an open lid, the water started to boil up and it started to pour out of the pot.

"Oh my god, "she almost shouted as she lifted the pot again and sighed, desperately needing some kind of help.

"How does she even do this?" Winter asked, mentally referring to her lovely girlfriend.

Finally, she was successful to put the cornstarch in the pot and stir it carefully. Adding some salt and black pepper and white pepper, Winter turned the stove off and rested her hands on her waist.

"Thank god it's ready, "she took out a soup bowl and a plate with the spoon.

Pouring the soup with the ladle, Winter inhaled the aroma of the soup and smiled, saying, "It smells good!"

And it didn't look so bad either.

Picking up her first-ever soup, Winter proudly rushed to the bedroom to give it to Y/N. She put the plate on the table beside and saw Y/N deep in her slumber. She sat on the edge of her bed and caressed her cheek with her thumb, smiling lovingly.

She just loved Y/N too much.

"Hey, wake up. Baby, "Winter said as she leaned down to place a kiss on her forehead and the tip of her nose.

Y/N stirred in her sleep as she rubbed her eyes and yawned. Finally, opening her eyes she saw Winter smiling at her.

"What happened?" she asked.

"I made you some vegetable soup."

Y/N nodded, but then as she realized the words, she opened her eyes wide open, making her sit up and blurted out, "You made what?"

"Vegetable soup. For you, "Winter said, the smile evident.

Y/N knew how Winter never cooked and how she never knew how to cook. But, listening to her say that she made her something made Y/N flustered and she felt her heart fluttering inside. A blush appeared on her face as she controlled herself to not smile in front of her.

"Are you serious?" Y/N asked.

Winter nodded and picked up the plate to present her creation to her, saying, "Ta-da! Vegetable soup exclusively made by me. Just for you, baby."

Y/N gazed at her face as she smiled and then down at the soup bowl to see the soup. But, she noticed something unusual about the soup. It was watery than it should be.

It's her first time. Let it be, Y/N. She thought to herself and took the plate from her.

Bringing the plate near to her nose to get a whiff of the smell, Y/N figured that some of the vegetables were burnt and it was noticeable. She looked at Winter who was staring at her with hopeful eyes.

"How does it smell?" Winter asked.

"It looks good and smells good too, "Y/N replied, at which Winter's smile broadened a little.

"Taste it. I wanna see your reaction, "Winter urged her as she leaned a little closer.

Y/N looked at her and noticed how her doe eyes were sparkling as her cheeks were puffed out with an adorable smile settled on her face.

Picking up the spoon, Y/N sipped on the soup as she chewed the chunks of vegetables in it. However, the salt was way too much in it making it impossibly bitter. But, she maintained her expressions, not wanting to hurt Winter's feelings.

Y/N knew how much she worked on that soup because even though the ingredients were not in the desired proportion, the efforts were visible. She smiled as she swallowed the soup and looked at Winter.

"It's good. Thank you, Win, "she said and Winter beamed at that.

"Really? Let me taste it too, "Winter said at which Y/N's eyes widened and she shook her head, saying, "N-No. This is for me, Win. Let me enjoy it."

"But, I wanna taste it too. Please? Just a little bit, "Winter pleaded with her pouty face that Y/N found it difficult to resist.

"Win, no--"

But, before she could stop her, Winter took the spoon out of her hand and tasted the soup. She smacked her lips for a few moments and then coughed out loud. Reaching for the glass of water, she gulped it down and wiped the corner of her mouth.

"It's disgusting! Why did you lie to me?" Winter asked, taking the soup bowl away from her.

Y/N looked at her and then held her hand, replying, "It was good. Trust me."

"It was not. There was too much salt in it, Y/N, "Winter said, her expressions showing distaste. "Why did you eat it if it was that bad?"

"Because you made it, "Y/N simply replied.

"You could've told me though. I wouldn't mind it, "Winter retorted.

Y/N chuckled and pressed a kiss on the back of her hand, saying, "You don't cook. But for me, you cooked. You made me vegetable soup, which I love. How could I not like it?"

Winter sighed as she looked down at her lap shaking her head. Y/N smiled and lifted her chin, making her look at her.

"I'm sorry. I just... I just wanted to make you your favorite soup to cure your cold. But... I ruined it. Didn't I?" Winter said, her voice low and timid.

"No, Win. You didn't. Do you know that you made me fall in love with you even more with this?" Y/N asked, eyes soft with love.

Winter's eyebrows furrowed and she asked, "How?"

Y/N stifled a laugh, saying, "Because... the way to every person's heart is from their stomach. And you made the soup with your love, which reached directly to my heart."

She pointed at her chest and then looked at Winter, who was staring at her hand.

"Really? You love me more now?" Winter asked.

"Yes, Win. I love you more now."

A smile finally crept onto her lips as Winter said, "I love you too, baby."
