[Recap]

"Yeah uhh no problem, See you at school!" He turns around and leaves just like that. He never answered my question.

[Another Day]

[Gilbert's POV]

Bash has been rambling for quite some time now. When can I get peace and quiet.

"When you go to school and leave me here whole day with no one to talk to I keep myself busy. If you cook and the food ain't have no taste I chew and swallow. I've carried this pain, quiet, into the cold Canadian spring. You know me, Blythe. I don't like to complain. So when I say lesser men would've cracked by now..."

"Then?" I ask looking up at Bash.

"Exactly. I'm ready. Close the door." Bash says. He tied his tooth to the door because he had a toothache. He wants me to close the door so it'll be pulled out.

"Uh, no." I tell Bash.

"Give it a good slam. I only wanna do this once." Bash tells me.

"This is a very bad idea. Go see a doctor." I tell Bash, I might just close the door if he doesn't stop.

"For a toothache? Just be my friend. The onliest one I have in this vast, lonely country." Bash says, as he finishes his sentence I get out of the chair and walk to the door and slam it.

I pat Bash on the back as I say "Nothing like a little peace and quiet." I walk away and hear Bash say "AH!" in pain.

[At School, Later]
[Y/n's POV]

Prissy is engaged to Mr. Phillips. She's been saying that he was gonna propose any day now but I didn't think it would actually happen. I can't help but feel like it's kind of wrong. She's still a child and he's a full on adult..

"Diana, you're such a dear. Thank you. Now I have everything I'll need for the perfect wedding." Prissy say as she turns to thank Diana.

"Prissy, do you have a bridal veil?" Anne asked.

"I'm going to be wearing my mother's." Prissy answers smiling. "It's a tradition in our family."

"You should keep this sixpence and hand it down to your daughters." Anne tells Prissy as Josie Pye walks up to the group.

"What are we buying?" Josie asks. When Josie asks that I notice Anne's face just go from excited to blank, I nudge her and whisper.

"You okay?" I ask her. She just nods as Ruby starts talking.

"Diana got a genuine sixpence for Prissy, all the way from London." Ruby says.

"I wrote to my cousin two months ago, as soon as I heard about the engagement. I'm just glad it got here in time." Diana says excitedly. I think I'm the only one who thinks this marriage is a bit strange and kind of disturbing.

"Something old, something new."

"Something borrowed, something blue."

"And a silver sixpence in her shoe."

Everyone laughs when Josie decides to open her mouth. "Sounds painful."

I turn my head to look at Cole, he's fixing up a fire. Just as I look at him, Billy pushes him, What a jerk.

"You need to be more careful, bud." He says as he walks away. It takes everything in me to not walk over there and punch him in the face.

I look at Gilbert and give him a look telling him to say something and he just shrugs and turns to Cole.

"Is it healing alright?" Gilbert says asking Cole as cole rubs his hands together wiping off dust.

"It's getting there. Thanks." Cole responds. He gets up and walks into the storage room.

[At the store in Charlotte Town]

"Hello. Good morning, sir." Bash says as he walks inside. "Tooth trouble. Actually, it's gum trouble causing the tooth trouble. I was hoping for some coconut water. My mum used to give it to me as a kind of healing. Maybe a trade ship came in with some huang lian? It's Chinese." Bash explains as the

"I have no idea what you're saying." The man says with a disgusted face.

"You don't like me." Bash thinks about what to say. "But I see you like money. Just sell me some salt to gargle with."

"We're all out." The man says, Bash looks behind him and sees a lot of bags of salt.

Bash sighs as he says "Sometimes I find bigotry very inconvenient."

"You won't find care anywhere around here. You should be with your own kind in the Bog." The man says still with a disgusted look on his face.

"The what?" Bash asks confused.

"Don't play dumb, you know what I'm talking about. The slum. For people like you, outside of Charlottetown." The man tells Bash.

"People like me? This true?" Bash asks in disbelief.

"Get out of my shop. Go back to where you belong with the other delinquents and indigents." When Bash is still standing there the man gets angry and raises his voice. "Go!"

"I was just leaving. You have no idea how happy you've made me." Bash tells the man as he turns around and walks out of the store.

[Avonlea school]

[Y/n's POV]

"The area equals one half times the sum of both bases multiplied by the height. Simple enough. Begin. The student who finishes last..." he pauses for a second looking in Coles direction before he looks away and continues, "will wish he had stayed home from school today." Mr. Phillips finishes going on about today's lesson. He always talks in such a boring voice, Since Mr. Phillips is moving on soon due to his engagement I hope the new teacher is less rude and judgmental than Mr. Phillips.

"Sebastian!" I hear Gilbert say as the door opens, I turn to look and see Sebastian standing there.. he doesn't look so good.

"Good morning. Pardon me, I need to have a word with Gilbert and Y/n please."

"I'd thank you to stay in the cloakroom." Mr. Phillips says with a disgusted expression on his face because of Sebastians presence, of course Mr. Phillips would be racist.

"Sebastian, what are you doing here? You look terrible." Gilbert says as he and I walk into the cloakroom to stand in front of Bash.

"You're not welcome here. He tried to kill me at the Christmas Pantomime." Billy says with a mad look on his face.

I walk a little bit close to Billy and say in a rather loud voice "Shut your mouth Billy Andrews before I shut it for you!"

"We do not support violence Miss Y/l/n, you can add 'I will not participate in violent acts' to your daily 50 sentences." He pauses and turns to the class before saying, "Return to your lesson."

I turn around and walk back to Sebastian and Gilbert, I see Gilbert holding in his laugh so I nudge him with my elbow and turn to Bash.

"You never told me about the Bog. Can I get my own doctor there?" Bash asks looking at Gilbert.

"Uh, just... sit down before you fall down." Gilbert tells Bash as he grabs Bash's shoulder and leads him to sit down. Bash grunts as he and Gilbert both take a seat. Gilbert gestures his hand to the seat next to me and I shake my head no.

"I didn't think you'd want to go there." Gilbert tells Bash and he lifts his hand and touches Bash's forehead. "You have a fever, Bash." Gilbert sighs.

"No doctors round here for me. That's what the man said." Bash says, he doesn't seem angry though.

"Unbelievable! Are you serious?" I say, I'm so upset that I decide to sit down across from Gilbert and Bash.

"That... is just..." Gilbert says before he pauses. "I know a doctor in Charlottetown. I'll take you to him right now."

"I want to go to the Bog." Bash says sternly.

"Bash, the Bog is just not a place for you. It's sad and unlawful and full of poverty and..." Gilbert explains before he's cut off by Bash.

"People who resemble me."

"I'm sorry. I'll take you. But first, let me bring you to a doctor that I know can help you! No time to waste." Gilbert says. He looks to me and lifts his eyebrows kind of asking me if I want to go.

"You coming?" He asks.

"But w-we're in school and I- uhh.. Sure." I say to Gilbert and he shifts uncomfortably before turning to Bash to help him. Gilbert and I are still in a awkward place since the last time we talked, we kissed and I kind of asked him what we were and he never answered and we never talked about it again. So yeah.. Akward.

[At the train station]

"So what you're really saying is CP Railways is prejudiced?" Gilbert asks. They won't let us on the train because they say Bash isn't allowed on.

"I'm saying there's no place on this train for your... guest." The man tells us before turning to the other man next to him. "Isn't that right, Isaac? On this train, we put the coloureds to work."

"We might find space enough for him in the back. With the cargo." The man who I presume is Isaac says sternly.

"I am a passenger. I'm not going to any back. This man my guest. I paid for his ticket, the girls ticket and mine." Bash tells the man.

"Is that true?" The man asks us. I just nod my head in agreement to Bash.

"Sir, unless this train is legally segregated we will be taking our legally purchased seats." Gilbert tells the man stepping forward. I'm biting my nails.. I don't do well with these kind of situations I guess, sometimes I'm like fire but other times I'm just still grass that doesn't wanna move. Just as I'm thinking I see.. Marilla? She's walking towards us rather fast.

"Oh... Gilbert! Y/n! Sebastian! I wondered where you'd got to. I have seats saved for you. This way." Marilla says as she leads us to where she's sitting, she must have seen the situation unloading.

"Good morning, Mrs Lynde." Gilbert says as we get seated across from Marilla and Mrs. Lynde.

"Oh, hello, Gilbert. And, um, uh, and..." Mrs. Lynde says stuttering.

"Heavens, Sebastian, what ails you?" Marilla says.

"Poor manners and a sore tooth. Many thanks, Miss Marilla." Bash thanks her.

"Sebastian, I must speak. I insulted you when we first met assuming you were the help. Avonlea has never been home to a... Uh... You are the first... Well... All that to say, you must come to tea someday soon. You too, Gilbert." I get second hand embarrassment as Mrs. Lynde 'apologizes'.

"Thank you. I appreciate the apology, and the invitation." Bash says thanking her. I get tired and rest my eyes, before I know it I fall asleep.

[Gilbert's POV]

I didn't notice Y/n fell asleep until I feel her head fall on my shoulder. She looks cute sleeping. I decide to just leave her there and not wake her until we arrive to our stop.

"I haven't been on a train since my father and I travelled west." I tell Marilla.

"Was it difficult? Travelling with John in such poor health?" Marilla asks with a concerned expression.

"He loved every minute of it. I'm taking Bash to his doctor, actually. I guess Anne didn't tell you but I'm looking to pursue a career in medicine." I explain.

"My, won't that be wonderful! Finally, a doctor in Avonlea!" As Marilla says this she turns to Mrs. Lynde but just like Y/n she's asleep, she turns back to me, "Your father would be very proud."

"He'd be glad I'm back home, anyway. Me? I'm not so sure. Returning to a one-room schoolhouse with an apathetic teacher might not have been my smartest move. Mr Phillips will be moving on after the wedding. I hope whoever they get next will actually be interested in teaching." I tell Marilla as she digs into her bag.

"Ah, yes, my surprise. I forgot all about it!" Marilla says as she pulls out something wrapped in a light brown cloth, as she unwraps it, it's decorated rather pretty, I assume it's from Anne.

"It's pretty. That must be from Anne." I say.

"I wonder which aspiration, from her many passions Anne will choose when the time comes." Marilla says smiling.

"Anne Shirley-Cuthbert is a passionate individual, alright." I tell her and smile, Anne is some girl alright.. Marilla hands me a cookie bringing me out of my thoughts. "Oh, thank you."

[At the doctor in Charlotte town]

[Y/n's POV]

Gilbert knocks on the door before opening it.

"Gilbert Blythe! It's been awhile."

"It has. I was very sorry to hear about your father. Who do you have with you?"

"This is my friend, Sebastian, and this is my... friend! Y/n." Gilbert says awkwardly, 'friend' ouch.

"It's an emergency."

"Yes, yes, I can see that."

"It's Blythe that needs help. Cure him of thinking he knows what's good for everybody else." Bash says turning to look at Gilbert. I see Bash is still upset about not being in the Bog.

"That's a sentiment I've heard in this office before. Open up, let me see it. It's criminal."

"Blame him." Bash says looking at Gilbert.

"I was coerced. My judgment was impaired by my need for silence." Gilbert says defending himself, he turns to me Smiling and seeing my still upset expression he awkwardly turns his head.

"You have a fever from the infection. I can give you something for both. You're going to have to have some sutures."

"Sorry to be rude, but I can't stay. They must have doctors who can help me in the Bog." Bash says, still upset about not being at the Bog.

"The only person who can help you in the Bog is a barber who pulls teeth with rusty tongs."

Bash thinks this over and turns to look at Gilbert, "Blythe, new plan. I'll get fixed up here, and then we go to the Bog."

Dr Ward takes out a needle and as soon as he does Gilbert mumbles something.

"Oh, God..." I turn to look at him and see him start to faint, I try to wrap my arms around him to maybe stop him from falling but fail and he falls to the ground, unconscious.

"Blythe?" Bash says with a confused but slightly worried expression.

[After Bash is done]

Dr. Ward puts something under Gilbert's nose and Gilbert sneezes as he wakes up.

"I'm not convinced medicine is for you, Blythe." Bash says as he looks at me and we both start laughing.

"What happened?"

"You fainted." I tell Gilbert.

"You want to be a doctor, eh?"

"You sure? It's never pretty."

"He has a knack for it. Most of the time."

"Well, this is exciting news."

"Nowadays his nose is always in a book. Ready, Blythe?"

"Dr Ward? Do you need an apprentice? Maybe I could help around here every now and again and, in exchange, you could help me craft my study plan? I promise I won't keep fainting." Bash and I both chuckle at the last part.

"It would be my privilege to mentor you. I've been thinking I might like to share my practice someday."

"Ah. Settled. Let's go to the Bog."

"I've never seen anyone in such a hurry to get to a slum."

"I imagine it's a beautiful place where black people dance beautifully in the snow." When Bash says this I start chuckling as Gilbert looks to Dr Ward.

"He's fine. Just a little laudanum."

"Oh. What do I owe you, Doctor?"

"No charge, if Gilbert will clean up around here. I've got some time before my next patient if you'd like to start our discussion too."

"Could you meet me back here in an hour?" Gilbert asks.

"You can come and fetch me. If you can find me. I'm going to blend in." Bash says kind of drowsy.

"I'll keep an eye on him." I tell Gilbert.

"Thanks! I owe you." As we're about to walk out Gilbert turns around and gives me a quick kiss on the lips and then walks back to Dr Ward like nothing happened. I stand there confused before I take Bash and we walk out.

[In the Bog, still Y/n's POV]

We stop walking as the man we saw, Isaac if I recall, from the train stops in front of us.

"If it isn't the man from the train... So, your guest ditched you? Where you from?" Isaac asks us.

"Trinidad. I worked a steamship to get here." Bash answers.

"I mean where do you live when you're not slumming down here with us in the muck?"

"Avonlea."

"Farming community. Hear it's pretty up there. Must be nice. I was rounding off a 72-hour shift when you got all uppity. Boss rode me till the end like a mule."

"Sounds like you had it bad before I stepped foot on that train. Pushing me to the back wasn't bound to help you."

"Boy... it's alright for you to be those people's pet but you don't know your place and that's dangerous."

"What I can't understand, boy is someone who was born free but still likes the taste of the bossman's boot enough to lick it when he doesn't have to." As Bash says this Isaac KICKS bash and bash falls to the floor and lands on what I think is.. Horse poop?

"A steamer's just a floating train! You licked your share of boots to survive! I could've hit you in the mouth." Isaac says before lending out his hand to pull Bash up. "Laundry's a few streets that way. They'll take care of you both." He tells us and points us in the direction of the laundry building.

I turn to Bash to help him and we both make our walk to the Laundry.

[At the laundry building]

Bash is just looking through the window, me being confused I decided to look through too. We stood there until a lady gave us an invitation in by waving at us so Bash opens the door.

"Afternoon, ladies." Bash says, I'm standing behind Bash and he's standing in the door way so I'm still outside.. in the cold. "I have to be honest..."

"I hope so! The last man who tried to rob us left here with less than he came in with."

"My situation might be a bit of a challenge." Bash says

"Well, bring your challenge inside and close the door!" I hear one of the Lady's inside yell.

When Bash walks in I can feel the warm heat rushing out. I slightly push him forward so I'm not standing in the cold anymore. "Ooh, hot in here! Feels just like a perfect Carnival Monday."

"If I didn't have to smell him, I could listen to him talk all day." One of the Ladies say.

"Lucky you got a warm place to be in, in this bone-chilling winter." When Bash says this l slap my hand on my forehead, I already know this is gonna go bad.

"I'm lucky?"

"Yes?"

"I'm lucky to be working here all day, hunched over this tub cleaning dirt and worse out of peoples' foul-smelling underthings?"

"Now that you put it like that..."

"Nickel per item, press and starch included."

"I hope you don't mind me sayin' so, Miss, but you're very pretty. Like a Julie mango shining in the sun. Mm-hmm."

"I do mind. Why is it that men think women are waiting around to be complimented? I'm working."

"S-sorry. I used to be good at this."

"Good at what? Dropping off your laundry?"

"Talking to ladies. Must be out of practice."

"Must be. March in here with your mango this, lucky that?"

"I'm sorry. For a moment, you made me forget all my troubles."

"Well... Let's have your things." I stand behind Bash hesitantly, I'm not sure if they've noticed it's not just Bash in here.

"Come on now! You don't have anything Jocelyn hasn't seen before."

"I don't mind seeing it again."

"Wool pants! I'm not so good with the cold." When Bash says this I step to the side a little so I can get warmer and out of the door way. One of the ladies who works here looks me up and down and I just look at the

Suddenly the door opens behind me and I see Gilbert walking in, he looks at me, then bash, then all the laundry ladies with a confused look. "I've been looking all over for you. What happened? Why are you standing half-naked in a room full of women?"

"Fortune finally smiled on me." Bash says smiling, i look around and notice the bad looks Gilbert and I are getting, so I look at the ground again. "Ladies, this is my friend and business partner, Gilbert Blythe."

"Forgive me. Pardon me." Gilbert says.

"And you are?" One of the laundry lady's asks Bash.

"Name is Sebastian. You can call me Bash, Bastian, Trini. Whatever you like." Bash says still smiling at the lady, he must like her.

"Turns out there's no train until tomorrow so we'll need to find a hotel. Can you recommend one?" Gilbert asks.

"Caters to black folks? Good luck."

"I know someone. Who has a room. She... lets it out to people in need." She hands Bash these ugly pants, she looks at my muddy clothes and hands me a small pink dress, I smile at her as a way to thank her. "These were never claimed."

"I wonder why not." Bash says holding the pants up.

"Best I can offer."

"What is this someone's name, who takes in wayward travellers?" Bash asks.

"Mary."

[At Mary's house, later that night]

We argued for about 10 minutes about who sleeps where, Bash and Gilbert both wanted me to sleep on the bed but I wanted Bash to sleep on the bed since he still has a fever and a ache where his tooth used to be. I didn't give up and I got Bash to sleep on the bed. Gilbert and I are both laying on the floor by the door until there's a knock on the door and I sit up on my elbows guessing it's Mary.

Mary pops her head inside before entering. "How are you two? Not still hungry?"

"Oh! Or fragrant." Gilbert says. Bless you for drawing him a bath."

"Thank you Ma'am- I mean Thank you Mary!" She smiles at me.

"Yes, bless you, Mary. You're an angel."

"I brought your receipt." Mary tells bash handing it to him, he opens his wallet and takes out the money and hands it to her, as she examines the money I assume there's an error when she makes a confused face. "Oh. You gave me too much."

"I was hoping for some breakfast?"

"I do know how to cook, don't I? Good night, then." Mary says smiling before walking out.

"Bless you, my angel." When Bash says this Gilbert and I look at each other and then we start laughing.

"Tease all you like. I don't shy away from the truth of how I feel like some fellows I know." Gilbert stops laughing when Bash says this but I continue.

"I don't think I'll sleep much."

"Too much has happened today."

"I know exactly what you mean."

[At Avonlea church, the day of Prissy's Wedding]

As the music starts playing everyone's voices fade and the doors open. Although I still don't support their marriage, Prissy does look quite beautiful. As she walks down the aisle, she passes Gilbert and Anne who happen to be right across from each other. When Prissy passes I see Gilbert and Anne staring at each other, I can see Gilbert smiling. Anne looks at me and then awkwardly looks away. I just look back to Prissy walking down the aisle.

When prissy gets to the end of the aisle and stands in front of Mr. Phillips, Prissy smiles but Mr. Phillips doesn't return the gesture. He stands there frozen. Prissy stops smiling and looks between Mr. Phillips and everyone who's seated. Mr. Phillips calls her name but she doesn't respond. When all of the sudden Prissy's flower bouquet drops to the floor. She looks at the door and runs. She never looks back. She just runs all the way out. Anne, Diana, Ruby, and Jane all run after her. I decide not to run after them, I would dumb since I'm not very close to any of them except Ruby and Diana. I look around to see what's going on, I look at Prissy's mother and I see her smile. She's not going through with the wedding. She won't be trapped in a house with Mr. Phillips, she can go to school now, like she always talked about before Mr. Phillips said she couldn't. I look at Gilbert and notice his confused expression, he's looking at me confused, probably because I'm smiling.

After a couple minutes everyone starts clearing out including Gilbert, Bash, and I. I came with my Mother and my brother Tyler but I sat with Gilbert and Bash. I say goodbye to some people, not all and then hop in my Mothers carriage, you see not everyone in this town likes my Mother, mostly because she does things that women apparently shouldn't do, I love her for it but people think it's not lady like but eh who cares what they think.

Before we leave I look back at Gilbert and realize he hasn't looked at me, he looked at me when I arrived and when Prissy ran out but that was it. He didn't look at me the way he looked at Anne. Does he like Anne and not me? Does he love her?
