Chapter XIV

The next morning, I wake up with a terrible headache. I barely slept last night. Not because I was scared, but rather, because a part of me deeply regretted telling Moon-Jo to leave my life. When I get to the school, I do not see Moon-Jo in his classroom. I want to talk him one last time in order to part on good terms. At the lunch break, I see another man walk out of Moon-Jo's classroom. I walk up to him and ask him if I can help him. Looking at me for a while, he replies, "Ah, you must be the English teacher, Miss Anna?" I nod my head, and he continues, "Nice to meet you, I'm the new substitute Geography teacher..." He can barely even complete his sentence, before I am basically sprinting to Mr. Marino's office. When I get there, I ask him what happened to Moon-Jo. "He resigned Miss Anna," he says while looking at me with concern. "I'm sorry Mr. Marino, but I have to take the rest of the day off," I say before he can even reply. The minute the elevator doors open on my floor, I dart towards Moon-Jo's apartment. I knock repeatedly on the door, but he never answerers. "Anna, he's gone," Paulo says as he rests his hands on my shoulders. Feeling crushed, I slump down and hug my knees while crying uncontrollably. Paulo stands by me as moral support. "I'm the reason why he's gone Paulo," I say as I regret not being able to give him a proper goodbye. Squatting down, Paulo asks, "How about you go and get some rest Anna?" I shake my head and ask him to just leave me alone. Reluctantly he heads towards the elevators. I spend the rest of the afternoon crying in front of Moon-Jo's apartment door. When the sun sets, I finally go to my own apartment. When I get in, there is a letter on the side table with my name on it. I eagerly pick it up and take out the letter as I walk over to my couch. After sitting down, I begin to read the letter.

My dear Anna,

By the time you read this, I will be out of the country. I'm not one for letters, so this will be short. I just want you to know that my affections for you, aside from being obsessive, are also full of genuine love and admiration. You are very special to me Anna. Remember to always keep my gift around your neck. As the inscription says, You will Always be Mine, because it was always you Anna, no one else.

Seo Moon-Jo

If my eyes had any tears left, I would cry my heart out, but they are as dry as the Sahara desert. Clutching the letter close to me, I curl up in a ball on the couch and fall asleep.
