SCHOOLS CLOSED. Those two words alone should have made teens ecstatic and grateful to finally have a break from a place they call jail.

But instead it just brought on fear of what was lurking outside of people's houses and letting out low growls.

Instead of Esmerelda Alveraz coming home from school and hopping into the shower, feeling the droplets of water fall onto her body like a normal routine, she was coming back to her camp from hunting for animals and any other food she could scavenge to survive.

Instead of droplets of water falling onto her body it was now replaced with filthy blood.

The blood of the nonliving, in other words, the walkers.

But it's not like her life was any better before the apocalypse. With her poor grades and low attendance, she was way too close to having to repeat her tenth year.

With her father cheating on her mom and starting a whole new family when she was twelve everything alternated in life.

Her happiness, her trust, her family and most importantly her love.

But she didn't care, not anymore at-least. Her only priorities in life before it all was her mom, and boxing. In the girl's free time all she ever did was boxing with her mom, if it was either at the boxing place her mom owned or her room, where she had a punching bag that her mom had got her on her thirteenth birthday.

She was thankful that her mom had taught her to protect herself from harm at such a young age. And to be an independent strong woman who didn't need the help of a man. She was prepared for what came at her and just her.

Esmie didn't need to rely on others for help, she takes the initiative and makes changes when she need to. She makes her own choices. She's up for challenges.

After all, Esmie was surviving, but at what cost and for what reason? That's what she always ever thought of while she trailed in woods with her only current source of family, being her mom.

What was she surviving for? What is the point of living if it's never going to be what it used to be?

She always answered those particular questions by saying "For mom.", but what if she ever lost her mom due to one of those blood sucking monsters? Then at that point what was she living for.

But when Esmie and her mom meet a group of people, she finally realizes what she's living for, for her family, the people she's grown to love and protect with her life like it depended on it.

And most importantly a boy who changes her bad perspective on what love is and instead shows her what it can be.

They all came from different areas, had different stories, but they were all drawn together, to help each-other live and protect.

They go through a shit ton of trouble, but at least it's together nonetheless.

Esmie was living. She was still standing. And she was going to continue standing even if it meant that she ever had to sacrifice her life for another because that's what family is.
