BEEP. BEEP. BEEP

I let out a groan and dug around in the messy bed covers in search of my phone. I clicked off the alarm and stared at the ceiling not wanting to get up yet, no light sprayed out from behind the curtain, meaning it was still dark out, and a very inappropriate time to wake up. The little voice in my head kept nagging me to get up or I would miss my flight. With a large sigh, I sat up and rubbed my eye trying to wake myself up. A banging from the door sounded and then Cat, Dan, and Phil, walked in just as groggy and sleepy as me. Phil walked in last and turned on the light.

“No, turn it off.” I slumped back into the heaps of pillows the hotel provided.

“Come on, we got up this early for you.” Cat pulled all of the blankets off my body, I whimpered and curled into a ball trying to keep myself warm.

“Get up curly, we got to get you to the airport.” Dan pulled my arm so I got up again

“Don’t call me curly, Howell.” I narrowed my eyes at him, “My hair isn’t even that curly today.” I mumbled grabbing clothes and walking into the bathroom. I looked at my reflection then just put a button up plaid shirt on over the black tank top I was already wearing. I took off my polka dot PJs and shimmied into some dark wash jeans. My hair was curly in some spots and wavy in some others, I scrunched my nose in disgust, grabbing the beanie off the counter I placed by the sink and put it on my head. I leaned closer to the mirror and looked at my nose, the swelling had gone down a lo, you could barely tell. It’s been 5 days so I guess that’s good. My wrist still hurt quite a bit though.

Playlist had been a lot of fun, but now I have to go to Idaho.

Ugh.

School, back to my regular schedule, no Cat, Dan, or Phil to hang out with. Just the same old routine.

Make at least one video a week; work at the coffee shop, school, and repeat.

I leaned against the counter and turned on the tap splashing my face to wake myself up.

“Baylee we need to go!” Cat knocked on the door, I dried my face and walked out. I slipped on my black Vans and ran around my room checking to make sure I got everything. I got my guitar, my backpack with laptop and camera, Penny Board, and my suitcase.

“Okay, let’s roll.” I yawned.

We piled all my junk in the backseat and hopped in the small rental car. Cat decided to drive this time, Florida scenery whirled past us and we talked mindless chatter on the way there. Dan, and Phil were set to leave later that day, and Cat tomorrow.

“We’re here.” Cat parked the car in unloading area, they got me a cart and loaded all of my stuff on it.

“Well, I guess this is goodbye.” Phil came up to me and hugged me tight.

“Whoa Phil, I’m not dying.” I laughed hugging him back.

“I know, but I’m just going to miss you, like, a lot.” His voice was muffled by my hat.

“I’m going to miss you too.” I snuggled my head into his chest and then released, “Maybe I can visit you and Dan in London sometime.” He smiled widely and nodded. He leaned down closer to my ear, “If you ever need anything, just call me, please? I don’t care about the time difference okay, just give me a ring.” I looked into his eyes, they were extremely serious, I nodded. “Good.” He walked back over to the car and leaned against it giving waiting for Dan and Cat to say their goodbye.

“It was a pleasure having you draw a dick on me.” Dan smirked. I giggled, “It was a pleasure drawing the dick on you.”

“Oh my god I’m going to miss you,” he laughed. He leaned down to whisper in my ear just as Phil did, “don’t go around making out with random guys like you did with me, it’ll just confuse them.” I rolled my eyes, “Maybe that’s what I want,” I leaned up and kissed his cheek and ruffled his slightly curled hair. He went over to where Phil was and they started a conversation of their own.

“I’ll see you soon yeah?” Cat hugged me gently.

“Yeah, I’m getting my apartment this summer, you need to come and see it, help me decorate it.” I smiled at her.

“I look forward to it.” She looked at her phone, “You need to get through security and stuff, I’ll miss you, stay safe, no tattoos or piercings or drugs.” She jokingly warned.

“Whatever, you sound like my mom.” I shoved her playfully.

“Bye guys, I’ll miss you!” I walked through the automatic sliding doors and waved goodbye to them.

Okay, now I need something to wake me up. I walked up to a coffee cart with a short line, “Hello, I’ll have one quadruple espresso with 4 sugars so it doesn’t taste like ass.”

The guy at the cart laughed and handed me my drink, I thanked him and wandered slowly to the security area drinking the bitter drink.

I handed the guy at security my ticket, “Idaho huh? If you’re from Idaho where are all your potatoes?” The security guy laughed. He looked at me and my unamused expression.

“I’m sorry sir, but I’ve lived in Idaho all 16 years of my life and haven’t once seen a potato field.” I felt kinda bad after I said it but fuck man, it’s early and I don’t have time for your shit. His face looked shocked and he handed me the ticket back letting me through. I mumbled him a quick apology and walked to my gate after going through the metal detectors, no knife jokes this time.

“How was the flight?” My mom asked as I jumped into her car.

“Long.” I muttered.

It was a lot colder in Idaho than Florida. Clouds littered the sky, maybe we would get some rain.  I took my phone out of my pocket and turned it off airplane mode and checked my messages. My mom was dressed in her work scrubs and her hair was up in a bun.

“Oh no, I didn’t pull you away from work did I? Mom, you know I’m more than capable of getting a cab home.”

“No, no, I got off early.” She passed a car speedily and pulled onto the freeway.

I looked at her skeptically. “How was Florida? I still can’t believe Cat got you into a dress. You posted a lot of pictures with fans on Twitter.”

“Oh, it was amazing, I can’t wait for VidCon in August.”

My mom nodded silently and pulled into the driveway, “Are you going to school tomorrow? Or are you waiting for Monday.”

“Monday,” I opened the door, “I have a lot of things to edit and I still have to do like, 2 pages of homework.”

I got all of my things out of the back and carried them up to my bedroom. I opened my door and walked into the darkened room, I flicked on the light, band posters covered the walls, my bed was still unmade and the bulletin board that was always behind me in videos was slightly tilted. It was cold; the drawers of my dresser were open still from my quick packing job. I set my guitar in my instrument corner along with my violin and keyboard and lifted my suitcase and put it on the bed taking all of the dirty clothes I wore and flinging them into the hamper, I took all the things I didn’t wear and put them back in the dresser closing the drawer. I flung myself onto my bed and let out a long breathy sigh, I didn’t know I was holding in.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“So what are you doing today?” My mom handed me a cup of coffee and the bottle of French vanilla creamer. I dumped some in my coffee and stirred it turning the black drink into a light brown .

“Well, before I go to work I’m going to go look at some apartments, so I need the car.” I sipped the hot drink, it burned my tongue; I cringed and set it down.

“I need you to drop me off at work then.” She walked over to the toaster and pulled out some toast spreading jam and butter on it, she offered me some but I waved it away and she shrugged.

“I can do that.” I got off the stool and placed my mug in the sink with a clink.

“Okay, we need to go than.” She put her toast plate in the dishwasher.

My mom got out of the car and waved goodbye to me. I watched her walk into the hospital in her Winnie The Pooh scrubs and pulled out my phone sending out a tweet.

Going apartment hunting today c: Wish me luck!

I turned on the car again and pulled out of the hospital’s large parking lot. I got onto the right road and started heading towards downtown Boise. I kept my eye out for any apartment complexes or duplexes, due to the fact I really had no plan. I saw a larger building in the distance and drove that way. I pulled into the lot and parked. I unplugged my phone from the stereo and shoved it into my pocket. Locking the car, I walked into the building, the doorman, looked up from the desk.

“You don’t look familiar, can I help you with something?” He asked.

“Uh, I’m looking for an apartment, are there any available?” The guy smiled and nodded.

“Right this way.” He led me to the elevator.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

After several apartment buildings and about 7 apartments I pulled into the driveway smiling like mad. I had found a really nice one for a good price. I left the car running and ran inside grabbing my backpack where my homework had been left, I threw it in the passenger’s seat so I could do homework while the shop was empty. We never have very many customers on Thursdays anyway, except for in the morning when everyone is on their way to work or school, I never work the morning shift except on the weekends.

I threw my black and white bag with doodles all over it, over my shoulder and jogged into the building so I wouldn’t be late. The familiar warm feeling of the shop took over my body, the homie feeling made me feel happy and safe, the red painted walls and leather couch in the corner next to a TV mixed well with the sweet smell of coffee and different kinds of cakes.

“Yo Dani!” I yelled, “Did you miss me?” I assumed she was in the back, so I began walking over, before I could take another step she hustled out with wide eyes, indicating for me to shut up.

“Is something…?” I trailed off when from behind her a woman emerged and I recognized that woman as our boss. I immediately bit my lip, I probably looked like a deer caught in the headlights of a speeding car.

“Hello Baylee.” She nodded at me and I gave a small wave.

She wasn’t necessarily the meanest woman in the world, just very intimidating. Her brown eyes were definitely something you didn’t want narrowed in your direction. Her hair was perfect too, not one single wave or frizz to it. Her heels made her a lot taller than me. She made me feel small. She made everyone feel that way. She made you feel like you were an ant and she was an elephant. One of those people that would walk down the hallways in school and people would move to the side just for her.

“I trust Danielle will notify you of a couple changes I’ve made.” She gave a professional smile, one without dimples or teeth.

I glanced over at Dani who was looking down at her apron and messing with the messily tied bow on the front. She walked out of the shop causing the door to ring leaving behind a cold feeling and silence, like a ghost had just walked past. I got a bad feeling in my stomach and looked back at my fidgeting co-worker. Slowly walking over behind the counter, I placed my backpack in its usual spot, and walked over to her.

When I got up to her, she looked at me with an extremely guilty look on her face, she pushed her lips into a straight line and avoided looking into my eyes, the bad feeling in my stomach got worse.

“What happened, what’d she say?” I asked.

She finally looked up at me and shook her head.

“Um, well, she-“ She stuttered.

“Come on Dani, spit it out.” I said in a soft tone.

“You’re fired.” She said it super fast.

I straightened up and widened my eyes.

“What?” I said still in shock.

“We can’t afford to keep you, you’re always out of town, and you’re in school, you talk to the customers too much, and… I’m sorry, those are her words not mine.” She looked down again. I stayed silent in a sort of state of shock.

“I guess I’ll just… uh.” I swallowed and picked up my backpack slowly. I grabbed my apron off its hook and stuffed it in the bag wrinkling some papers. I zipped it up and threw it over my shoulder. I opened the door not looking back and walked to my mom’s car. I put the bag in the front seat and slammed the door hard. I sat in the front seat gripping the steering wheel staring off into space.

“Fuck!” I yelled. I punched the steering wheel with my right hand making the horn honk for a millisecond. I squeaked with pain and cradled my wrist which was still kind of hurt. I leaned my head on the wheel and closed my eyes sighing.

Okay.

I breathed.

“I still have YouTube, that’s a lot, some people live off that.” I said to myself. “Just a little bit less.” I bit the inside of my cheek and turned the car on. It rumbled to life under me. I made my way through the streets and to my house. I pressed the garage door opener and waited for it to open all the way and pulled in, got out of the car, leaving my backpack and making my way upstairs to my room. I opened my laptop and typed in the password.

Well, on the bright side, I guess I have more time for Tumblr.
