Targeted

It has been a couple of days since then and I am getting ready for the day but there is something bothering me. Something that could change my life. Yesterday I received a proper threat from James. He has made it personal. Of course, I told Carlos about it but I am scared. I am praying that he only targets me as I don't want to put the 126 in any unnecessary danger. In fact, I may have already. TK rescued me from the man when we were grocery shopping. I am trying my best not to panic but it is almost impossible. I find myself pacing as I wait for Carlos to make breakfast.

"Tristian I am sure that it is nothing," TK tries his best to reassure me.

"TK you were there. Besides, he is not going to stop until I'm dead. I guess now would be a good time to tell you why I'm scared," I snap. I will have to apologise later.

"Well tell us," Carlos jumps in now that breakfast is ready.

"That man we ran into, his name is James Emerson. Five years ago my firehouse in Toronto was called to a fire which happened to be arson. I was the first one who figured it out. Because of that, I was the prime target. Luckily for me, the TPD was able to catch him before he could get to me," I fill them in on what happened. Of course, I am leaving one major detail. James did ruin my life. He took away the person that meant the most to me. Her name was Alyssa Cambell.

"You know you'll be safe with the 126," Carlos says as he grabs my hand. I look him in the eyes.

"Carlos you don't understand. His MO is to go after loved ones first and that means he will go after you or the 126," I counter.

"I promise I will be fine. It's you that I have to worry about," Carlos tries his best to reassure me. To be honest I should just go to work and live my life to the best of my abilities till this blows over. I just need to trust the APD and the Texas Rangers if anything happens. It has been an hour since I got to work and I have filled Owen and Tommy in as to what is going on. They are both on high alert. That is not surprising with the bomb that I dropped. Right now I am double-checking the inventory. I am using it as a distraction. It isn't working as well as I would like. After six hours of various calls, the signal bell goes again. Luckily for me, I am already in the ambulance as I was doing inventory again. I am quickly joined by TK and Tommy. After a tense five minutes, we made it to the scene. My heart sinks as I recognise where we are. It's the precinct where Carlos works. That is not a good sign. It is well a blaze. I glance at TK.

"Hey Cap, it's James. He is after Carlos," I announce. I can hear the panic in my voice.

"Has anyone seen Officer Carlos Reyes?" Owen asks.

"Yes. He went back in. There was someone still trapped," another patrol officer remarks.

"Judd, Marjan, you're with me. Tristian it is going to be alright. Carlos isn't dumb. He knows when to back off," Owen gives his orders. I know that Carlos isn't dumb however, I know for a fact that James isn't going to give up until I am dead. With that, I turn my attention to helping those that are already out. The least that I can do is my job. Time seems to slow down as I wait for Judd, Marjan and Owen. It is taking forever. Luckily for me most of the injuries are superficial so there is not much for me to do.

"TK how are you holding?" I decided to check on him as he is scared. I can understand why as Carlos has pulled him through at his worst times and he doesn't want to lose him.

"I'm scared," he gives me the short answer. As soon as the sentence leaves his mouth Judd, Marjan, Owen and Carlos come out. Between Carlos and Owen is the person that Carlos rescued. She looks like she is in bad shape. I quickly got to work on treating her. After another eternity I turn my attention to Carlos. I notice the pained look on Carlos's face.

"Show me," I demand as I notice what appear to be third-degree burns on his wrists. That can only mean one thing. He had to lift a burning object away. Carlos reluctantly shows me the burns. He is lucky that the burns only appear to be on his arms. A sigh falls from my mouth.

"Tommy, do you mind if I help Carlos?" I ask.

"No, go ahead. TK and I have everything under control," Tommy replies. With her permission, I get to work on making sure the wounds on Carlos's arms are stable.

"Even though you only received burns to your arms you are going to have to go to hospital," I inform Carlos as I gently wrap some gauze around one of the wounds. He looks at me with his puppy dog eyes. He wants to stay here and make sure the rest of his crew is ok. It is a feeling that I share however the burns on his arms require specialist care that I simply do not have the resources to provide. It could be worse though. I quickly do what I can to the best of my abilities.

"But-,"

"But nothing babe. She's right," TK remarks as he joins us. Luckily for me, I have backup.

"Anyway Carlos, the woman you pulled out will be ok," TK adds for good measure. It is at that moment that I notice the look of surrender on Carlos's face. With some help, Carlos is loaded into the ambulance. It has been a few hours since then and I am waiting for information. All I am getting is static. Right now I am supposed to be having dinner with the crew but I can't focus. I am worried about the lack of information.

"Do you mind if I take your food?" Mateo asks.

"Go for it. I'm not hungry," I say as I push the plate towards Mateo. I quickly make my exit. I make a beeline for the ambulance. I have decided to sleep on the gurney. I don't want to face the others as it is going to be a long night. I know for a fact that I will be having nightmares. It doesn't take long for me to be joined by TK. He must have followed me. He looks as bothered as I do.

"Hey TK," I reluctantly greeted him.

"Hey Tristian," He responds.

"You know we are going to get through this. Carlos and Gabriel are going to make sure of that," TK adds as the atmosphere between us grows cold. It is as if a ghost is here.

"The last person who said that is six feet under. I don't think you understand the situation," I snapped. I put it down to the fact that the hour of static is killing me. I find myself fiddling with my fingers to keep myself from crying.

"Then make me understand," TK counters. He is right. TK deserves to know what I got himself into.

"You know how I said James targets loved ones first. Well, there was something I didn't tell you or Carlos this morning. Her name was Alyssa Cambell. She was the love of my life. We were even due to get married but...he, James...he planted a bomb under the ambulance. I wasn't on duty but James made sure I knew it was him. He was out for revenge and he still is," As soon as I am finished with my explanation I realise that he might have done it again. Arsonists normally follow a pattern. I flinch as my phone rings. I look at the caller ID. It's my dad.

"Hello Papa," I answer.

"Hello, Lola. I have some good news and some bad news," He is in business mode.

"What's the good news?" I tentatively ask.

"I contacted the Toronto Police Department and it turns out you were right, however, he has already set the second stage of his plan in motion," My dad informs me as I shoot up to attention. That can only mean one thing. I hang up and look directly into TK's eyes.

"TK we need to go now," I order as I leap into action. There won't be much time. I grab TK's wrist and yank him out of the ambulance. Instead of pulling TK to a safe spot, I pushed him to the ground. I use my body to shield him. I let out a scream as debris hit my back followed by the searing pain of chemicals hitting my skin. As soon as it started it finished. After a few seconds, the others join us. The next thing I know I feel the sensation of water pouring down my back. I am propped up between Judd and Owen. They are making sure that all of the chemicals are washed off before I get treated.

"How is TK?" I mumble.

"He is good thanks to you," Owen seems sincere but I can't really tell as I am fighting to stay awake. Come on Tristian. It doesn't take long for me to succumb to the throws of unconsciousness. After what feels like the briefest of moments I can hear voices.

"Carlos she'll be fine," It's TK.

"She won't be until we catch the bastard," Carlos responds.

"Hermano, I thought you were at the hos...," I cut myself off as I realise where I am.

"I had to make sure my Hermanita is ok," Carlos responds. He is wearing the standard hospital gown and his wrists are covered in proper bandages. He must have had some kind of a skin graph.

"Thank you Carlos but TK is right. I won't be good until James is six feet under," I say as I roll over onto my side. It is a miracle that I wasn't already on my side as the pain is immense. Painkillers can only do so much. I have a long way to go but I know for a fact that I am not going to rest until James is dead or at least captured. I know for a fact that I will do my best to help my dad with his investigation.
