8: Moony and Padfoot

The next day, I was allowed out of the hospital. I walked to class slowly and saw people wearing badges that said 'SUPPORT DIGGORY' and 'POTTER STINKS'. I waited outside the Potions class and was fifteen minutes early. I didn't care though, I didn't want to go to the Great Hall. No doubt, somehow, someone would have found out my secret and by now everyone would know.

'Are you OK?' asked a voice behind me as I stood running my finger over the words on my wrist.

It was Nico who spoke. Him, Ron, Hermione and Harry were all standing there. I nodded slowly then looked down, pulling my sleeve over my wrist. I could have killed Nico or worse... bitten him.

'Molly!' said Josh, running towards me and hugging me.

I flinched and moved away. I couldn't do it. He could have died. I shouldn't be allowed near him, I was a monster. Why was I even allowed back at Hogwarts when I was bitten, they knew the dangers.

'Are you OK?' he pulled away and looked into my eyes.

'I could have attacked you...' I said quietly.

They all looked at me in concern. I avoided all their eyes and played with my tie.

'I'm too dangerous... Dumbledore should have never let me continue here after I was bitten,' I continued.

'No... It was not your fault. It wasn't your mind! You couldn't control yourself,' said Josh.

'That's the problem. I can't control myself!' I whispered.

'I think you'll find none of us care!' said Nico and the rest of them nodded.

I gave him a sceptical look and he sighed.

'Dude, everyone falls down at some points in their lives. You just have to get up and carry on fighting!' he said, and everyone nodded.

'But what if I had attacked you? I wouldn't be able to live with myself...' I said, still looking away.

'But you didn't! So just forget about it. We have forgiven you, we didn't blame you in the first place,' said Josh and he hugged me again but I pulled away quickly.

'Miss Black! Will you please come with me,' said McGonagall, coming along the corridor.

I sighed in relief. I didn't have to suffer Potions with Snape. I followed her as she headed to her Office. She opened the door and inside was Dumbledore. He gestured for me to sit down and I felt a sickness rising in my throat.

'You are to go home for a while. You didn't come to breakfast this morning and I overheard your conversation with Mr Freeman and Mr Cortell,' said McGonagall.

'It is not because you are dangerous. We are worried for your own well-being,' said Dumbledore, 'It will only be for a week or two, just until this whole incident has blown over. You are not expelled, you are merely taking a break. For your own sake.'

'So, I'm going to miss the second task...' I said miserably.

'I am sorry, Molly, but it's for your own good!' said Dumbledore then he gestured to the fireplace, 'Go to Remus!'

I nodded and took some Floo Powder. I sighed and said the name of the cottage then arrived in the kitchen. Remus, who had been sitting at the kitchen table reading the Daily Prophet and drinking a cup of tea, jumped about a foot in the air.

'Molly! What are you doing here?' he asked, placing the cup of tea and the paper on the table.

'Dumbledore sent me here,' I said, grumpily.

'Why?' he asked, concern written all over his face.

'Last full moon... Snape gave me a detention and wouldn't change it... I transformed in the library and almost attacked Josh, Nico and a few others...' I said quietly, 'Dumbledore said it would be best for me to stay here for a week or two.'

A dog growled underneath the table. I hadn't realised Sirius was there. He transformed human again and hugged me. I flinched but didn't pull away this time.

'I will get Snivellus for this... He should be fired!' he said angrily.

'No, you will not, Padfoot! Dumbledore will deal with it!' said Remus.

'No he won't! Dumbledore will most likely just let it pass, Moony!' said Sirius angrily.

'So, what do you expect to do? March into Hogwarts and hex Snape!' said Remus, standing up.

He was about five inches taller than Sirius and was glaring down at him.

'Well, if I get sent back to Azkaban, it will be worth it!' yelled Sirius. The volume of his voice startled me and I moved backwards.

'No, it won't! You're just going to abandon your child after being away for twelve years?' Remus shouted, I had never seen him this angry, 'Well, what a great father you are! I'm sure Molly will be so proud!'

'Don't you dare say that to me, Lupin. You're not a dad, you don't know what it's like,' Sirius said in a dangerously low voice.

'I'm as much her father as you are, I've looked after her for longer than you!' said Remus, now even angrier, 'I'm mad too, but you can't do something stupid like this and get sent back to Azkaban.'

'I'm going to Hogwarts to get Snivellus,' said Sirius, 'And you can't stop me! Come on, Molly!'

I didn't move. I just stared at him in shock.

'So... You don't care if you get sent back to Azkaban and never see me again,' I said quietly.

I ran to my bedroom and barricaded the door. I never wanted to see him again. It showed how much he cared about me if he was just going to go get sent back to Azkaban.

'Molly! Please let me in!' came Remus' voice.

I got up slowly and opened the door. Remus came in quickly and I shut the door behind him.

'He's not going anymore. He didn't realise how much it hurt you,' he said and I could tell he was trying his hardest not to hug me, not to startle and hurt me even more.

I moved away and walked to the other side of the room. I picked up a picture of me and Sirius when I was one. I looked so happy, carefree. I wished it was still like that, I wish I was still as untroubled.

'Come on,' he said, walking out the door.

I sighed and followed him, head down. I walked back through to the kitchen to find Sirius sitting at the table, looking incredibly guilty and Remus making another cup of tea.

'I'm so sorry,' said Sirius when I walked in.

'It's OK,' I said and shoved my hands in my pockets.

'I... I want to be there for you more... As soon as I am free, we'll take a holiday together. We'll get away from here and spend some quality time together,' he said, 'We can forget our troubles and be happy.'

'Go get some rest,' said Remus, 'We'll call you when it's time to eat.'

I nodded and walked slowly back to my room. I got out a notebook and a quill and began;

I'm not always like this. It's something I become. A terrible weakness, in my nature, in my blood. Save me. Save me from myself. Before I hurt somebody else... Again...

Please don't blame me... I can't help what I am... Believe me, I've tried...

I sighed and placed the things on my bedside table. I buried my head in my hands and slept, never wanting to wake up again. Nothing worse could happen though, could it? I mean, already, I had recalled a past nobody would want to remember, my mum had died, I had almost died, I had fallen about a thousand feet, I had transformed in a library full of students and been sent home from Hogwarts for a while. It couldn't get any worse!

I woke up again late afternoon the next day. It meant that I must have slept for about twenty-four hours. I sighed and dragged myself out of bed then trudged slowly towards the kitchen.

'Molly! We were beginning to think you had died!' said Sirius and I grimaced. He obviously didn't realize that talking about death reminded me of my mum.

'Padfoot, shut up!' said Remus, noticing I had gone pale.

'Alright, Moony!' said Sirius, holding his hands up then he turned to me, 'Who did you go to the Yule Ball with?'

I sighed. He could have asked me that ages ago.

'Josh Freeman,' I said and Remus raised his eyebrows. He knew Josh was a Slytherin.

'Who is that?' asked Sirius.

'A Slytherin boy,' said Remus and Sirius narrowed his eyes.

'Thanks,' I muttered in annoyance.

'You're going out with a Slytherin!' said Sirius, disbelief clear in his voice.

'Yeah, got a problem?' I replied calmly.

'Padfoot!' said Remus, trying to calm Sirius down as he was seething.

'A Slytherin! Of all people you choose a Slytherin,' Sirius said quietly, ignoring Remus.

'Yeah, because he is different to the other Slytherins!' I said.

'Different!' yelled Sirius then Remus dragged him out of the room. I flinched at his loud voice. He was angry, he had never been angry at me. Memories of the way I was yelled at before flooded my mind and I struggled to keep a brave face on. I didn't want to lose my dad, I didn't want it to back to how it was.

After ten minutes they came back and Sirius looked calm.

'Sorry... It was none of my business...' he said quietly and I nodded.

'He's the one who wasn't going to say that he had seen you,' I whispered, 'He cares about me, and I trust him.'

'Molly, I...' he didn't get to finish before I had thrown myself at him, hugging him tightly. He had scared me with his loud voice, sure, but he was still my dad. I knew he was only looking out for me, he just didn't quite know how to go about it yet. I could trust him.

'Anyone here?' asked a voice from the door.

'I better leave!' said Sirius and he ran out the back door after giving me a tight squeeze, 'I'll be back.'

Remus opened the front door just as Sirius had leapt on Buckbeak the Hippogriff, who had been hidden in the garden, and they flew off.

'We have some questions concerning Sirius Black!' said the voice and I sighed and headed to my room. What a great start to the day.
