Chapter 12

"I'm in. Let's do it." Leo said. Then he turned to Indigo. "Did I mention I was the lead vocal of our school band? You like Ed Sheeran?" Leo put a shoulder around Indigo and started leading her out of the room, not even bothering with their plates still on the table.

Eris came back and saw the plates, then Leo on Indigo. I swear if it was physically possible to roll her eyes any further, she would. She cleaned up after the two and went out.

"You're coming too, right?" Cana asked.

"Sure," I said, "Just want to write down my report, first. I'll see you there?" She nodded. We took our plates to the sink, where Cana and Demi volunteered to wash the dishes. The rest of us trickled out of the room.

I just wanted to get it over with as soon as possible so I can fully enjoy the party. There was no need to squeeze my brain to recall every little detail that happened. I remember them all. The memory was still fresh, as new and as disturbing as when it happened. Just writing them down made the pen in my hand shake but I was determined to get it done. Words turned into a paragraph in a matter of minutes. I was in frenzy, my hand was writing on its own. It didn't take me long to retell the experience and jot down the strange observations we've made.

I finished my report, which looked more like a diary entry and lie down on my bed for a while, my hands still holding the pen and handbook. I figured they haven't started yet so I took another minute to read the handbook again, checking to see if I somehow skipped any information that could explain what we've seen last night.

There's got to be something we've missed. I thought, because if there were, then that would mean that last night, we just got careless or it was all just an accident. That would also mean that the rules still worked and the dorm still safe.

Even after experiencing all of that first hand, I still just can't bring myself to believe everything that I'd witness last night. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I didn't miss any details about the Shade growing eyes because there simply wasn't any, which means that whatever we saw last night never happened before and we are the first to have seen it.

"Lucky us," I muttered. My feet were kicking the bed on the floor, reminding me that Demi left his bed here. I'll tell him next time.

I walked up towards the window. Kent's body was gone but the tree was still there. I wondered why Major Coleman didn't have the tree moved. But then it hit me, after staring at the tree for a while. The tree was wide and huge, must have weighed tons. Clearly, Major Coleman didn't have the manpower or machinery to move it.

Why did it fall in the first place?  I thought.

I perked right up as if an electric current had been applied at the base of my spine. The Shade growing eyes. Mr. Donovan's scream and the tree falling. Kent bleeding out, choking. All these frightening disturbances last night made us missed the simplest details. Why did a huge and wide tree fell down last night?

Curiosity sent me dashing downstairs. On my way out, I saw Cana just stepping outside the dining area.

"Oh, hi," she said. "I was just—"

I grabbed both of her shoulders. "Cana, we missed something big."

My intensity took her by surprise. "Oh—uh—we—what do you mean?"

I let go of her and lowered my voice to a whisper. "I'm going outside. Check things out. Wanna come?"

"But what about Harmony? And the party?" she said, still looking confused.

"I'll see you there, then," I said, rushing out of the dorm.

"No, wait," she said running after me. "I'm coming."

Warm sunlight greeted us as we head outside the dorm. It was so bright that I had to squint. My hand provided cover for my eyes. The sky was a clear brilliant, blue. A gentle morning breeze blew over, in contrast to the warm, sunny morning, which felt nice. It was a perfect day. For laundry. For field trips. And basically everything else except for what we were planning to do.

I looked up the rooftop and saw that Major's men are still in their position. Knowing that soldiers with assault rifles are watching over us in broad daylight made me feel a little better.

"What exactly are we doing again?" Cana said, walking up to my side.

"I may have something, about last night," I said. "But I need to check some things first..."

Outside, there were two others already looming over the fallen tree. Darius and his sister, Scarlet. "Should we tell them?" Cana asked.

I have no idea what to expect, of what we will find and after causing a scene last night, I'm really not too excited to start another one right here. "Can we keep this between us, is that okay?" I asked Cana.

She met my eyes, studying me, trying to read my mind. "Sure."

"Hey," Darius greeted as he walked up to us, her sister, Scarlet followed closely behind. "Just thought we should see it..."

"You know," Cana said. "I don't remember seeing you guys last night when it crashed."

"Yeah, well," Darius said. "After that tree fell...I knew I had to get her away," he said, pointing at his sister with his thumb.

"He was panicking the whole time," Scarlet said with a blank expression. "At one point, I thought he was going to cry."

Darius glared at her. "Says the one who can't sleep last night without hugging Captain Snug—"

Scarlet let out what can only be described as a war cry and pounced at his brother, her arms went flying, trying to cover his mouth but his brother was taller, and faster. "It's cute when you were five, now, it's just weird," he said while blocking her sister's hands. Scarlet stomped the ground hard, her hands balled to fists at her side. She tiptoed to get into his face. "At least I don't wet the bed!"

This went on for a while, with a lot of insults and name-calling being thrown and embarrassing secrets being revealed after every exchange. Cana was laughing at the scene, hugging her ribs.

"Shouldn't we stop them?" I asked Cana, who was trying to catch her breath.

She wiped a tear from her eye. "What? Why?" I must have looked pretty confused because she added, "I guess you wouldn't know, huh? Siblings always get into fights like this. I do, with my older brother. It's almost nothing serious." She explained. She must have remembered that I told her that I was an only child back in the school van.

I've always wondered what it would be like having a brother or a sister. Even wished to have one at some point. But if this is what it's like to have a sibling, I should probably thank my parents for stopping at me. My parents. I wonder if I was going to see them again.

"By the way," Cana said, stopping my thoughts from becoming more depressing any further. "If they can embarrass each other that much, it just shows how close they are."

"Oh, yeah," I agreed. "Close to killing each other."

Finally, Scarlet stomped away and headed back inside the dorm, with her brother running after her.

"You know, it's hard not to envy them..." Cana said. "They didn't had to see Kent die in their faces. Maybe it would have been better if we just ran inside the same time they did..."

I was wondering how they could act like this. Sure, we are all acting like last night didn't happen, but not to this extent. But now I kind of get it. Like seeing the news about murder in your area. You're afraid, but you don't walk around the neighborhood, thinking you'd be next. Hearing about something is very different from experiencing it yourself.

"Maybe..." I said. "Come on, I need your help with something."
