Hard to Love

Hannah looked out the window in the kitchen of the lake house she and Jesse had gotten for the weekend. She picked up her cup of tea and walked out the doors on to the patio. She set the cup on the balcony railing in front of her. Watching the sunrise over the lake made her feel peaceful. She hadn't felt that in a while.

The drive to the lake house had been awkward. Neither she nor Jesse said anything to each other. Hannah had gone back and forth between writing articles on her lap top and looking out the window. She knew that getting away was the right thing, but she was not happy about the five hour drive out of Chicago.

Another sign escaped her lips as she leaned against the balcony. The birds were chirping, and the forest around the lake smelled crisp and fresh. She closed her eyes and just focused on her breathing. She honestly couldn't remember the last time she had meditated. She was taking her last deep breath when an arm wrapped around her waist, jolting her out of her trance.

"Hey," Jesse murmured.

"Hi," she murmured.

"You got up early."

"Yeah. Just an early riser," she shrugged.

"Mhm," he nodded, taking a drink of his coffee.

He wasn't in any big hurry to move his arm from around her waist. Hannah smiled a little as she leaned her head against his chest. She had missed being close with him. She honestly couldn't believe how out of hand their fight had gotten. They had both said horrible hurtful things to each other.

She had cried on the phone with Dean. Dean was furious and ready to get on a plane back to Chicago. Hannah appreciated how protective he was, but she told him that wasn't necessary. Her mom had suggested that they go to therapy. It was Marie's idea to ship them off to the middle of no where, just the two of them to work through some of their problems.

"Jesse?" She whispered. It felt almost foreign to hear herself say his name.

"Yes?"

Hannah looked up at him and in the eyes for the first time in days, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry; I know I'm hard to love sometimes. I love you so much, Jesse. I can't lose you.

"You are never going to lose me, Hannah. I love you so much. You're not hard to love. Loving you is probably the easiest thing I've ever done," he pressed a kiss to her forehead.

Hannah dissolved into tears. Jesse pulled her into him and held her close. She wrapped her arms around his waist and sobbed into his chest. She hadn't meant what she said about dating Luke. She had just wanted to hurt him worse than he hurt her. And Luke was the easiest way to do so. Jesse and Luke got along, but she knew he was still slightly uneasy about the left back.

"I'm so sorry too. You're a great mom. Emily is so lucky to have you," he whispered, "I'm lucky to have you."

"You're everything I've ever wanted in a life partner. I didn't mean what I said about Luke. I'm glad I moved to Chicago," she moved her hand to the back of his neck.

"I'm so glad I met you. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. I knew you were the one quickly. I love you, Hannah." It felt good to hear him say her name again. She loved the way he said it.

"I love you too, Jesse," she leaned up and kissed him.

Jesse cupped her cheeks as they kissed. Hannah had missed that. She had missed them. In the three days since their fight, they had barely looked at each other, let alone been in the same room. They had slept in separate rooms at their house and in the lake house the night before. She held on to his waist with the hand that wasn't tangled in his hair.

"Let's go inside and talk," Jesse pulled away and kissed her forehead.

"Okay," Hannah nodded.

She grabbed her mug of tea and turned back to Jesse. She took his hand in hers and leaned her head on his arm. She smiled when Jesse wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her in closer to him. Her head was on his chest now, and she could hear his heart beating erratically. She figured he was just as nervous as she was.

Jesse lead her over to the sofa. Hannah set her mug down on the table. Jesse sat down, and she sat down next to him. They turned in towards each other. Jesse took her hand and squeezed it. She smiled and moved closer to him. She leaned forward and pressed her forehead to his.

"I'm sorry," she murmured again.

"I'm sorry too," he kissed her nose, "I love you. I love you so much, Hannah, it scares me."

"I never wanted a relationship until I met you. Luke and Jonah tried for a year before I met you. I said no every time, but then I met you. And you were all I ever wanted," she rested a hand on his cheek.

Jesse kissed her lips and pulled her closer. It was a very gentle kiss. Hannah and Jesse were usually hot and heavy, so she appreciated this tenderness between them. They needed to heal together. She pulled away and smiled at him.

"I've been thinking a lot, and you're right. I shouldn't be travelling," she murmured, "I have a daughter who needs me."

"No I was wrong. Travelling is a very important part of your job. I have no right to tell you not to do your job," Jesse ran his fingers through his hair, "maybe we can work something out?"

"What were you thinking?"

"Maybe you travel for the important MLS games like LA and Atlanta, and then the rest of the away games from home and the home games at the stadium?"

"That's a good idea," she nodded, "thank you."

"Of course. I know travelling is a big part of your job."

"It is. I'll make sure to stop travelling a couple weeks before you start filming and then be at home for the rest of the Hawk games."

"Hannah-"

"No it's fine. I need to be there for Emily since you're going to be around a lot more people."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive," she nodded squeezing his hand.

"I think that's a good plan," he kissed her forehead.

"I still think we should go to therapy."

"Yeah that's a good idea," he nodded, "after breakfast maybe we can look for one?"

"Mhm, good idea."

"I love you."

"I love you too," she leaned forward and kissed him again.

"Me and you," he squeezed her hand, "always."
