The Spell

I'm walking through school with Mal and Jay. My hand is in Jay's safe grasp.

"Look, it's Mal. Hi, Mal! Love my hair, Mal!" Some girls call to Mal. We stop at Mal's locker.

Jay leans against the locker and he lets go of my hand. "Are you feeling kind of weird about this? I mean, It's not so bad here, you know."

"Are you insane? Long live evil! You're mean! You're awful! You're bad news! Snap out of it!" Mal snaps his fingers in his face.

"Thanks, Mal. I needed that." Jay wraps an arm around my waist as we laugh. He looks at the girls then at me. "I promise I won't cheat on you."

"I trust you." I peck his lips before walking over to Ben and Audrey. "Hey, guys."

"Do you think they actually paid for those?" Audrey looks at the girls. I look at Jay.

"Oh, hello. The name's Jay. You all going to the tourney game tonight?" He asks the girls.

"Yeah." The girls giggle.

"Keep a lookout for number eight, all right? Scoring the winning goal." Jay winks at me.

"Okay." The girls look at me. I look back at Audrey and Ben.

She did it to Jane's hair, too, and Fairy Godmother's not happy about it." Audrey shakes her head.

Ben shrugs. "What's the harm?" He asks.

"It's gateway magic! Sure, it starts with the hair. Next thing you know It's the lips and the legs and the clothes and then everybody looks good and then...where will I be?" Audrey places a hand on her chest.

"Listen, Audrey-" Ben looks down.

"I will see you at the game after my dress-fitting for the coronation, okay?" Audrey smiles.

Ben smiles back. "Okay."

"Bye, Bennyboo." Audrey air pecks his cheek.

"Bye." Ben says. He turns to me. "I'm sorry for what I said yesterday. I didn't mean it."

"It's fine." I hug him. He hesitates. "Waiting for utani?"

"Yep." Ben hugs me back.

"Not today." I step away from the hug.

"Still best friends?" Ben asks hopefully.

"Forever." I smile. "And I'm dating Jay."

"Since when?" He asks.

"Since last night." I blush at the memory.

Mal shuts her cooker and impersonates Audrey. "Hey, Bennyboo!"

Ben turns around. "Hey." We walk up to her.

Mal holds up the bag of cookies. "I just made a batch of cookies. Double chocolate chip, do you want one?"

"Oh, I, uh, I've got a big game. I don't eat before a big game. But thank you so, so much. Thank you. Next time. Next time." Ben turns to walk away.

"No, yeah. I completely understand. Be careful of treats offered by kids of villains." Mal seems really down at that.

"No, no, no." Ben shakes his head.

"No, I'm sure every kid in Auradon knows that." Mal looks at me with Ben. I nod.

"No, that's not it. No, no, no, I...I really do-" Ben gets cut off by Mal.

"No, I get it. You're cautious. That's smart. Oh, well, more for me, I guess." Mal takes a cookie.

"No, no. Hey." Ben takes the cookie and eats it. "ee that? Totally trust you. Totally." I turn to look at Jay while Mal looks at Evie and Carlos.

"How are they?" Me and Mal ask him.

"They're good. They're great! They're amazing! They're, uh...I mean, they're chewy and, and you know, they...is that walnuts?" Ben asks. Mal nods. "I love walnuts. I mean, uh, you know, the... The chocolate...the...the chocolate...the chocolate chips are...I'm sorry. Um...uh, they're...they're warm and soft. And they're sweet...Mal, have you always had those little golden flecks in your eyes?" Mal takes the cookie from him. VICTORY...I think.

"How you feeling, bro?" Jay asks him.

I feel... I feel... I feel like...like singing your name. Mal!" Ben sings. Mal covers his mouth with her hand and we push him away. "Mal!" Ben carries on singing. The five of us look at each other a laugh.

"Someone probably heard that." I smile.

"You've got that right." I look behind Evie and Carlos to see Margaret and Ming.

"What the hell just happened?" Ming asks. I get out my phone and I message them about the cookies.

"Don't tell anyone." I tell them.

"This is the second best thing I've ever heard." Margaret smiles.

"We won't tell anyone. We wouldn't do that to you." Ming puts her phone away.

"Anyways, Ming wants to practise our song." Margaret groans with me.

"I'm in a good mood." Ming claps her hands together.

"Do we have to?" I ask. Ming nods. I look at my friends. "I'll see you all later."

"Can we come?" Evie asks.

"YES!" Ming screams. Me and Margaret yank her hair. "Owie."

"Lets go." We walk back to our dorm. I shut the door. I sit down at my piano while Margaret and Ming quickly have some beer.

Jay sits next to me. "What's the song called?" He asks.

"Better Together." I peck his cheek. I look at Margaret and Ming. "I'm only doing the first verse, the pre-chorus, the chorus, the bridge, the last chorus and the outro."

"Fine." Ming pouts. I smile and I start to play.

Margaret starts to sing. "Don't have to win the gold all on your own. We're a team now we're stronger."

"Don't gotta face the whole world all alone 'cause we can go further." Ming side hugs me.

Margaret and Ming sing together. "The road could be hard and the night could be dark. Like a jewel, we'll shine brightly wherever we are."

I take a deep breath. "If we stick to the dream, we'll never fall apart."

Us three sing together. "Because we're better together, stronger side-by-side. This is our moment, it's our time. So we're different, whatever. Everyone can shine. This is the moment of our lives 'cause we're better together."

Ming does the next part while she does a dance we created last month and Margaret. "We are stronger. All of us together. Only makes us better. We can do whatever. We are stronger. All of us together. Only makes us better. We can do whatever."

"Yeah!" I smile at Jay.

"Because we're better together, stronger side-by-side. This is our moment, it's our time. So we're different, whatever. Everyone can shine. This is the moment of our lives 'cause we're better together." We sing together.

I back them up as they sing the outro. "We are stronger (oh, oh). All of us together (oh, oh). Only makes us better (oh, oh). We can do whatever (oh, oh). We are stronger (oh, oh). All of us together (oh, oh). Only makes us better (oh, oh). We can do whatever (oh, oh). 'Cause we're better together." My friends applaud us.

"That was incredible!" Evie squeals.

"You were amazing." Jay pecks my cheek.

"Thanks, babe." I lean my head on his shoulder.

"Come on, Romeo." Carlos stands up. "We have to get ready for the game."

"Sure." Jay looks at me. "I love you."

"Not as much as I love you." I peck his lips. Jay stands up and leaves.

"We should head to the Tourney field for the game." Ming pulls me to my feet.

"Fine." I look at Mal and Evie.

"We'll be at the bleachers with Lonnie." Evie hugs me from behind. "Bye."

"See you later." I smile. Ming hands me my cheer clothes, we get change and we walk to the Tourney field.
