Chapter Thirteen: Healing?

Autumn's P.O.V.

My dad explained to me that I came from the fall practically unscathed. Apparently my Fairy protector swooped in just in time to catch me before I hit the ground, and the headache was because of the fatigue from exhausting myself from flying around too long. I got a stern talking to, him telling me that if I risked flying around again in daytime, he'll have an ankle monitor put on me my own protection.

Whatever. Like I'd ever trust anything he says again. His keeping too much of my own heritage away from me and his always giving me vague answers.

I offer to pick up Jade for with my dad's Volvo, because I heard that she fell down the stairs and sprained her ankle. My fall didn't give me amnesia; I still know Jade is a Hunter and I'm still a little pissed about the fact but I figured if she was scoping me out that night in my yard to find out if I was a Fairy, she would have killed me the second I showed her that I was. The fact that she pushed me out by the window stating that it wasn't safe for me at her house, just proves that she never intended to kill me at all.

I'm also not planning on mentioning this new obtained knowledge to her, if only to give her the chance to tell me herself.

I lean against the door of the Volvo, feeling like one of the cool kids, now that I will be one of the elite, who drives a car to school. Jade emerges from her house, sporting clutches under either side of her arms. Her backpack slung lazily over one shoulder. I run up to her offering to take the bag from her. I don't bother putting it over my shoulder because the car is only a few feet away and it will be going in the trunk. Jade kisses my cheek to say thank you. I can't help but look around to see if anyone is watching. I guess old habits die hard.

Sure enough her mom is standing in the doorway. The look of displeasure, clear even from all the way across their lawn. I smirk at her, knowing it will just piss her off even more.

Ace comes barging past her running with a huge grin of his own, plastered on his face.

"I'm so driving with," he throws his bag in the back seat.

I just shake my head and smile at him.

On the way to school we listen to 'boomerangs and seesaws' by Shannon Curtis, both Jade and I singing along, ignoring the snide comment from Ace that it's freaking chick music.

I pull up in the school's parking lot, trying to stop as close to the hall entrance as possible. Jade will be walking around a lot as it is already, and I don't want to add to that.

We lose Ace along the way to our lockers. I pull out my French book then go to Sally's to get hers. Upon opening the metal door, I stop the books from falling out. I resist the urge to repack everything neatly and find the book way in the back. Just because I have a pinch of OCD doesn't mean that I can't respect how others choose to live their lives, even if I find it maddening in a sense.

"You should really consider cleaning that thing out. I won't be surprised if there's a half-eaten sub, growing mold in there." I tease.

She sticks out her tongue at me. I decide to be spontaneous and grab it between my lips, turning our teasing banter into a make-out session.

We finally pull away when the bell rings, giving us three more minutes before the tardy bell follows. I lean my head against hers.

"How is it possible that it always feels like ages since the last time we kissed and yet and the same time it still feels like the first one?" I say, hoping she doesn't tease me for being corny.

"Must be some kind of magic," she kisses my forehead.

"Dykes!" someone yells, breaking our romantic moment.

"Bigot!" I call back, not really bothering to see who it is.

We enter the class just as the tardy bell rings, Miss Dubour's scowl changes to a look of sympathy when she sees Jade's crutches.

I put down Jade's textbook then pull out her chair for her to sit. I saunter over to my own seat to see a forced smile on Sally's lips.

"Well aren't we being all sweet," she says pressing her glasses back her nose. I ignore the undertone in her voice and just smile.

♀♀♀♀♀♀♀♀

I drive to Ace's house and park the car on the sidewalk, grabbing Jade by her wrist before she can get out, "not you, I have something special planned, to say sorry for ditching you Saturday," I whisper in her ear, placing a gentle kiss on her cheek.

"Get out loser," I catch Ace's gaze in the review mirror. A playful smile tugging on my lips. He moves to the middle pulling himself closer by the sides of the car seats.

"Tomorrow I get the Aux cable, God knows I can only handle so many depressing songs," his grin splits his face in two. He steals a quick cheek kiss from me and then gives Jade one also.

"Don't do anything I won't," he wiggles his eyebrows.

"You're a pig," I say, now pushing at him so he can just get out already.

I shift the car into first and pull away.

"I just need to get a few things by the supermarket and we'll be on our way." I say turning up the music a bit. Jade has always been impatient when it comes to long drives, so I figured I'd keep her distracted by playing all the music I know she likes. On the plus side, it's not that far of a stretch from what I listen to, so I guess it's a win-win.

After much debate I convince Jade to sit in the car while I quickly get all her favorite fruits, some yogurt and a little chocolate of course. I put the paper bag on the backseat, putting on the A/C so the chocolate doesn't melt.

Jade removes her seat-belt so she can lean over the seat to see what's in the bag.

"No peeking, missy," I say sternly, waving my index finger side to side.

Jade turns around crossing her arms over her chest like a five year old who couldn't get her way.

I smile thinking that she is very adorable when her cheeks are puffed up.

As I drive I can't help but look at Jade, who has been singing to everything single song with so much passion, that a person would swear she is the artist. It's a good sight, even if it isn't as good for my ears. She looks unconditionally happy in this moment, that I wish I could take an actual picture instead of a mental one, especially when those dimples pop.

"What?" She asks, turning the music down

"I was just thinking, is all," I shrug.

"I gathered, what I wanna know is what is going on in that mind of yours."

I turn on to a dirt road that is surrounded by trees.

"Just how exquisitely beautiful you are and how much I love you," my cheeks warm up at my own confession.

She grins, flashing her pearly whites at me, "I love you too."

I follow the dirt road all the way up to the lake. The trees become fewer but the few that there are now, reflect off the dark water. A little further up the lake there is a little wooden house and a tire swings. I don't want to bother the people who are vacationing there so I stop the car.

"Wait here until I come and get you," I say to Jade.

I walk alongside the car to pulling out the quilt I found in my dad's bedroom cupboard. I figured it was supposed to be mine because it has a picture of an autumn leaf sown in and a whole bunch of other pictures about a green land filled with mountains and trees, a man Fairy with a crown, two other Fairies standing next to each other and then the same to men standing next to each other with a crooked line between them, indicating a split. Like the kind you draw to example a broken heart. And a whole bunch of other Fairy stuff.

I lay the blanket on the grass and then go to the car to get the paper bag. I set everything up in the corner, so that Jade and I have enough space to lie down.

I open her door, offering my hand for her to take which she does. Instead of getting her crutches that are on the back seat I pick her up, bridal style, and carry her to the quilt. I lie her down gently and go sit down opposite of her.

"I knew we we're coming here for a picnic, the moment we turned onto the dirt road," she smirks.

"I figured as much," I say, finding it hard to remove the smile from my face, "I used to bring you here as much as I could, because it was the only place we could truly be ourselves back then."

Jade sits up, throwing her legs over me, leaning on one hand, to keep her balance. She takes a slice of guava and puts it in her mouth. Not chewing it right away. I pick up the two plastic cups and fill them with soda, handing her one. She sips at it and then puts it down next to her. I examine her swollen ankle a bit, taking it between my hands and rubbing gently at it.

"Mhmm, that feels so good," she says. I smile at her.

"So tell me a bit about London, what was it like there?"

I can't help but notice her tense up a bit.

"Cold and wet all the time and all the kids I went to school with were stuck up snobs."

I chuckle at her answer, "it wasn't all bad, was it?"

"No, I went on the London eye, I can cross that of my bucket list," she pauses, "let's see, I also went to the British museum. That was pretty amazing, oh and I went to the Big Ben and I watched a concert at the Royal Albert hall," Jade's smile turns into a frown.

"What's wrong, that sounds amazing," I keep rubbing at her ankle.

"It was, but I can't thinking how much better it would've been if you were there with me," she half smiles this time.

"I promise you one day we'll go do all those things together."

I reach for the guava slices but Jade slaps my hand away. I quirk up an eyebrow.

"Don't touch my fruit. You've been rubbing at my stinky feet."

I laugh at her, "It was you ankle and you have a bandage over it," I defend myself.

"Let me just feed you instead," she picks up a slice and dangles it over my head. I open my mouth and she smears it all over my mouth, making me sticky.

"You're gonna pay for that," I launch at her and smear the stickiness all over her face.

She throws her head back as she laughs. I wait for her giggle fit to end and as soon as her lifts her head back up I kiss her. Tasting the faded guava on her mouth. I lean my weight on her forcing her to lie down. Our tongues entwine, sending chills down my spine. I know what's about to happen next so I break free from the kiss, staring intently in her eyes.

"Please be my girlfriend again?" I say before I lose my nerve. I watch her eyes fill with joy.

"Always," she breathes wrapping one hand around my head, pulling me down for another passionate kiss. Once again I have to break free, giving her an apologetic look, "I don't mean to be a buzz kill, but kissing you like that makes my Fairy want to escape."

"I get it, you're afraid that someone here will see it."

I kiss her on the forehead and then sit back on my original spot.

"What did you do to my leg anyway, it feels much better," she says, standing up, putting some of her weight on it.

"Don't know, I just kept thinking that I wish I could take your pain away."

A knowing look crosses her features for a brief second, "well it worked because it doesn't even hurt anymore," she lifts up her good leg, to prove her point.

"I... I healed you?" I ask, clearly stunned.

"I guessed you did," she says nonchalantly. Jade is taking this way better than I am.

"What do you want for your birthday, it's only a month away," she tries to change the subject, but I don't let it go that easy.

"How are you so cool with"- I stop mid-sentence, hearing footsteps coming from the trees all the way down by the lake house. They step out from the behind the trees and I change my eye color to purple so I can use my Fairy sight to see who is approaching us.

Its two male's both wearing flannel shirts. One has a shotgun and a beer in his hands, the other has a rabbit or something.

"I think we should get going," I start packing up.

Jade turns around and watches the two men who keep getting closer.

"It's hunting season, there are bound to be a few passers," she shrugs, "besides we just got here."

"This may be their land and that makes us trespassers. I don't know about you but I don't want to be taken downtown," I add the last part as an attempt at humor, but I can't help but feel uneasy. I'm not gonna lie, it's the gun that scares me.

"I'm sure it will be fine," she says.

I on the other hand, am shoving everything back in the paper bag, carrying it back to the car. When I get back to Jade, the two gentlemen are standing there looking at us. I'm glad that I changed my eyes back to blue before coming over.

"Well I'll be darned, looksss like we have a couple of queerss in our midssst." The man with the long ginger beard slurs. The shotgun resting on his shoulder.

"We don't want any trouble, in fact we were just leaving," I say, rolling up the quilt. I protectively shove Jade behind me, placing the car keys in her hand.

"Don't you know it's a sssin," the other man says, scratching his stubble, then burps loudly.

I don't say anything and I'm grateful Jade is also silent.

"Lookss like we'll have to ssshow thessse young ladiess what it's like to be with real men sso they can stop their evil wayss."

"Run!" I shout to Jade, pushing the man with the stubble away from me, he falls over, causing his hat to fall off. The dead rabbit that was in his hand is now laying in the dirt, next to his hat. The other man stumbles around to help up his friend. Picking up his hat and handing it to him.

Jade runs to the car and starts the ignition but doesn't drive away.

"What are you doing? Drive! I'll meet you at home," I locked my thumbs together and wave my fingers, indicating to her that I'll fly home.

She nods her head once and spins the car away.
