Chapter 25 - "You're forcing our friendship?"

The roar of Juilliard's food court swam around Amelia. Her leg started buzzing and she dug out her phone. The number unfamiliar, she answered.

"Hello?"

"Hello beautiful, I'm outside," the voice on the other end said cheerfully.

"I'm sorry who is this?"

"You couldn't tell who it was by my soft, melodious voice and charming greeting," the voice said.

"Hi Danny."

"Right you are Aims."

"How did you get my number?"

"Bash, of course. Now like I said, I'm outside, about to come in," Danny said, his voice jovial.

"Come in where?"

"Juilliard. I've come to kidnap you and sweep you away," Danny said, sounding pleased with himself.

Amelia froze and her feet clattered to the floor, as she pulled them off the chair.

"Danny don't come in, I'm serious..."

There was a clear shout on the other end of the line, that Amelia also heard from where she was sitting. There was the thundering of footsteps as recognition spread through the entrance of the school.

"Aims, help!" Danny said, the sound of girl's eager voices drowning out his own words.

Amelia was already on her feet, stuffing her things into her satchel as her gaze darted around the food court, searching for someone. Slinging her strap over her head, she sprinted through the crowded area, stopping at one specific table. Her eyes locked onto the biggest guy.

"Hey Ameli-"

"James, I need your help," Amelia said, hurriedly.

She tugged the guy from his chair, leading him towards the entrance.

"Amelia, you want to tell me what's going on?" James asked.

"Yes, their is a pack of girls down by the main doors about to tear a guy to shreds and I need your help to get to him. And get us both out of the doors. Can you do that for me?"

He nodded, confusion still sitting in his eyes. Layers of girls formed a large huddle around Danny.

"He's in there?" James asked.

"Yes. Make a hole and I'll stay right on your tail."

James moved through the mass of girls, stopping at the center.

"Hi I'm James, I'm here to help you out," James said, his voice as carefree as if he were walking through the park and stopping to say hi to a friend.

"Lead the way," Danny said.

James started moving again. Amelia pushed herself around James's large frame to slip out the entrance with Danny.

"Thanks James, see you in music theory class," Amelia called over her shoulder.

James waved goodbye and pulled the glass door shut. Girls burst from the other doors, streaming towards Danny and Amelia.

"Where's your car?" Amelia asked.

Danny didn't bother answering, instead took off running towards the right. He rounded a silver Aston Martin and yanked the door open. Amelia slipped inside, the car purring to life as she slammed the door shut. They had melted into the thick of traffic by the time she let out a deep breath. A brown paper bag crinkled at her feet and she shifted to avoid crushing it.

"That was a close one," Danny said, with a shaky laugh.

"Danny, what are you doing here? More importantly why didn't you bring your body guard?"

"First off, is that anyway to greet someone who just faced death to come see you?"

"Answer the question."

"I came to pick you up. We're going to go visit Bash at the recording studio and bring him lunch."

"Oh, of course why didn't I know that's why you were here. It's so obvious."

"Really?"

"No, of course it's not obvious. Besides I thought Bash was in LA?"

"No, he leaves tomorrow."

"Right, my bad." Amelia said, mockingly.

"It's okay no ones perfect."

Amelia gave him a flat look.

"I appreciate you facing death and everything for me, but why didn't you bring your bodyguard? He could have saved you instead of me," Amelia said.

"Do you see this car? Where would be put him? The trunk? Please like he would fit in there," Danny said, shaking his head. "Besides Bash said whenever he had shown up at the school, it wasn't too bad. I figured I could slip in and slip out."

"He always brought Jones and took the back way in and out. You waltzed in through the front doors during the biggest lunch break."

"Oh, well at least we're both safe. No harm done," Danny said, nonchalantly.

"I guess so," Amelia said, turning her attention out the car window.

Heads swiveled to watch as the car sped by, it's sleek shape and sound catching pedestrians' attention. Amelia looked around the car, noticing it for the first time.

"Danny, did you seriously buy a James Bond car?"

"Aims, please, it was the very first thing I bought after my tour."

"Of course it was."

She shifted her feet and they knocked against the brown paper bag again.

"What did you get him for lunch?" she asked, glancing at Danny.

"It's funny actually, I got him sandwiches from a place only a couple blocks from your apartment. He said it was his new favorite joint."

A smile bloomed on Amelia's face.

"It's not a coincidence, it's the same place I bought him sandwiches from when we were working together."

"Is that so?" Danny said, his tone layered with intrigue.

Amelia eyed him with suspicion but didn't say anything. She turned to the window, watching as the world zipped by.

"Aims," Danny said, cutting into her thoughts.

"Hmmm."

"What do you usually do during the summer?"

This comment pulled Amelia's focus to him, studying his face.

"Usually internships of some sort."

"When do you usually apply for them?"

"At the beginning of March, why do you ask?"

"Curious, that's all."

He didn't expand on the comment and she didn't ask him to.

****************

They walked off the elevator and into a quiet hallway with rows of doors lining it, silver numbers hanging on the dark wood.

"Okay, he's in here," Danny said, his hand reaching for a door handle.

Amelia's hand shot out and hit the door frame.

"Stop," she said.

Danny looked at her surprised.

"Danny, why am I here?"

"Because I brought you," he said, plainly, reaching for the handle again.

Amelia moved her body between him and the door, forcing Danny to take a step back.

"Why did you bring me? Why me, Danny? My work with Sebastian is over. There's no reason for me to be here."

Understanding settled into his dark brown eyes and he sighed heavily.

"Aims, did you know that Jules and Dodger did go over to Sebastian's apartment after New Years?"

Confusion flashed through Amelia's expression.

"No. I thought they were working on different projects. They didn't know about Sebastian."

"They knew and when he told them to leave, they did. Simple as that. I don't blame them. But Aims you were the only person he told to leave but came back."

"We still had work to do on the album."

Danny gave her a frank look.

"Is that really the reason you came back?" he asked, meaningfully.

She shook her head.

"That's why I brought you, Sebastian needs someone like you in his life. You've helped him in a way I couldn't. So even though he would never make the effort, I am on his behalf," Danny said.

"You're forcing our friendship?"

"I think of it as merely encouraging what is already there," he said, with a mischievous smile.

Amelia stepped aside and he pushed the door open. A man with long hair pulled back into a small bun sat in a leather chair at the sound board. Sebastian was on the other side of the glass, headphones on, singing into a microphone, his eyes closed. Danny stepped lightly up to the man in the chair and slapped his arm gently.

"Hey Max," Danny said, his tone quiet.

"Danny, good to see you, it's been awhile," Max said.

Danny nodded and looked back to Amelia.

"Max, this is Amelia, the drummer Sebastian worked with on the album. Amelia this is Max, Sebastian amazing producer."

Max held out his hand and Amelia took it.

"You're the amazing drummer Bash has been telling me about?" Max said. "Keith just started laying down some of the tracks. Nothing permanent yet. I know Bash still wants you to work with Keith to make sure it all right. But still what I've heard so far is great."

"Thanks."

Max swiveled back towards the window, as Sebastian held out the final note, hitting a button.

"That was great Bash. We'll play it back and talk it over, but first you have visitors."

Sebastian pulled off the headphones and stepped out of the studio.

"Aims! What are you doing here?" he asked, his tone light.

"Danny showed up at my school and kidnapped me. So your guess is as good as mine."

"I've told him kidnapping is illegal here but he doesn't listen. Apparently it's different up North," Sebastian said.

Danny spun around and punched Sebastian hard in the arm, making his laugh.

"Quit making jokes about Boston," Danny said, annoyed.

Sebastian laughed.

"This what I get for bringing you sandwiches from across the city. In retaliation I'm going to eat your's," Danny said.

"Did you really?"

Danny held up the brown bag as testament. Sebastian reached for it but Danny snatched it back, so Sebastian raised his hands in submission.

"I apologize for making fun of you and your misfortune of growing up in Boston, and I'm an idiot."

"I guess that works," Danny said.

*************

Tossing the wrapping of her sandwich away, Amelia looked around the room. She took in the wear and tear of the place, that made the air heavy with memories of songs sung, instruments played and hundreds of voices discussing their work. Sebastian looked over at Amelia, a small smile coming to his lips.

"You want to hear what we got so far?" he asked.

"With the album?" she asked.

He nodded.

"Of course!"

Max twisted the chair around to face the sound board, and touched something on the computer. Sebastian's voice echoed through the space, his voice clear and resonant. Amelia's mouth fell open as the song progressed, layers of instruments except for the drums backing up his singing. When the song ended, another moved into fill its spot. Song after song played, all of them mostly complete. When the last note faded away, silence expanded around them for a heart beat.

"Oh my gosh, that was amazing!" Amelia said, her face beaming at Sebastian.

He looked down his face holding back a modest grin.

"Dude, this album is going to be your best," Danny said.

"Where did you get time to record? I thought you were just starting?" Amelia asked.

"I started recording in November," Sebastian said. "Once we had a solid base of songs and melodies, I was in the studio."

"That makes sense. It's sounds amazing, I can't even wait to see what it sounds like with the drums," Amelia said.

"Same."

Amelia glanced at her watch.

"Crap! I have to go," Amelia said, scrambling to her feet.

"I thought you didn't have anymore classes today, it's Wednesday," Sebastian said.

"I know, but now I have rehearsal for the final showcase. My first one is in half an hour, so I need to get back."

Danny tossed on his jacket and moved towards the door, keys already in his hands.

"Thanks for coming, it was nice to have a break," Sebastian said.

"Agreed," Max said, from his chair.

"I'll see you when I see you, I guess," Amelia said, her tone hesitant.

"Yeah, we still have to celebrate, remember," he said, cheerily.

"Right. Good luck at the Grammys," she said, already walking to the door.

Sebastian nodded and waved as she slipped out into the hallway.

"Bye Aims."
