Chapter 8: Parks and Rec

Dear, Evan Hansen,
I was thinking, it would probably be better if I came over to your house. Is that okay? And do you have Netflix? If you don't, I can just log into my account.
          Sincerely,
                 Me

Evan smiled, immediately writing back.

Dear Connor Murphy,
That sounds okay to me. And we do have Netflix. So... you can come over. Address is 813, West Elm.
         Sincerely,

                Me

Evan put his laptop to the side, tapping his leg nervously.

"I get that you like this guy, but do you have to do this in the common area?" Jeremy asked. He was wearing a dramatically oversized sweatshirt that Michael had left there, weed socks, in his underwear.

"W-We're gonna be w-watching stuff in here soon, so... probably?" Evan said. Jeremy groaned.

"Does that mean I have to leave?" He asked. He didn't want to move. He had slept there the night prior.

"O-Or put on some pants." Evan said. He got an email.

Dear, Evan Hansen,
Of course you would live on a street called West Elm XD. I'll be over soon, you don't live too far.
          Sincerely,
                 Me

Evan smiled. Before seeing his soon to be step brother, who was laying on the couch, sipping water through a straw, on his phone.

"C-Connor's gonna be here soon, y-you should probably put on some pants." Evan stuttered. Jeremy pouted.

"Fine, whatever. I'mma go to my room." He said before rolling off the couch. He picked himself up before trudging up the stairs to his room. Evan cleaned up the small amount of things that Jeremy had left behind before looking in a mirror and fixing his hair.

There was a knock at the front door and Evan ran to answer it.

"Hey, Hansen." Connor said. Evan smiled.

"H-Hi, Connor!" He squeaked.

Why did he feel so nervous...

"T-TV's over here." Evan said, leading Connor to the couch. He took the remote, shakily pressing the buttons.

"Sweet."

"S-So why did you want to come to my house anyway?" Evan asked. He pressed his Netflix icon, a sea turtle from Our Planet 1.

"I didn't want to be watching the show and you're distracted by looking at my idiot sister." Connor said. He sat gayly, with one of his legs against his chest and the other underneath.

"Sh-She's not an idiot."

"Well, I have better grades than her, that should say something." Connor said. Evan handed Connor the remote.

"Could you..." Connor nodded, trying to find the show. "A-And maybe you're just smart." Evan suggested. Connor let out a hefty laugh.

"Yeah, no." He said. He clicked a button, turning on Parks and Rec. "Do you mind me coming over?" Connor asked.

"It's f-fine. I really don't mind." Evan said. "B-But Jeremy's going through a rough time right now. So... if he was still down here, I'd be a little iffy on having you come over and I would've insisted on coming to your house instead, even if I were distracted by your sister."

"Why, what's up with Jeremy?" Connor asked with a small laugh. Evan shifted nervously, subconsciously getting closer to Connor.

"He and Michael aren't talking right now. I-I think that it's breaking him. He hasn't changed in 3 days. He's wearing a sweater that I've seen Michael wear, I think it's his. And he keeps not wearing pants." Evan said nervously. Connor laughed.

"Oof, that sucks." He said. He put his arm around Evan's shoulders.

"O-Oh." Evan squeaked.

"Oh, do you want me to not--"

"N-No! It's fine!" He said nervously. "Sorry..." He muttered, realising how loud he had been. Connor chuckled politely.

"It's fine, Hansen." He said. Evan let his head fall onto Connor's shoulder, cuddling a bit closer.

"Sorry." He said again, referring to his warming actions.

"It's fine." Connor said. "Are you cold?"

"No. I'm fine." Evan said, but cuddled a bit closer to Connor. Connor smiled. The front door opened and Evan darted back to the other side of the couch.

"Hey, Ev-- Oh." Heidi said. "I didn't know that you had a friend over." She said.

"S-Sorry for not telling you." He said, pressing his legs to his chest nervously.

"It's okay! I'm just glad that you're getting closer with someone." Heidi said happily. "You must be the famous Connor Murphy." Evan's face tinted pink.

"Mom..."

"Sorry, honey."

"Famous?" Connor asked with a small smile.

"Evan talks about you a lot, you know." Heidi said. "He loves talking to you. Sometimes he eats dinner as fast as he can just so that he can email you back." She said with a small giggle. Evan buried his face in his hands.

"Mom!"

"Most of the time I just eat in my room so I can talk to Evan." Connor said casually. Evan looked up from his hands, his blush now for a different reason.

"Aw! Well, I'll leave you two alone right now." She said. "I'm just glad that Evan has a friend now." She said before walking into the kitchen.

"So that's your mom." Connor said. Evan laughed nervously.

"Y-Yeah. I love her, but she's apparently embarrassing." Connor suddenly snapped his fingers loudly, which startled Evan.

"That would be the other reason I didn't want you at my house." He said, kind of loudly. He laughed slightly. "Sorry, that was kind of loud. But seriously, Cynthia and Larry would be weird about the fact that I actually have a friend, they'd think that you're a junkie, I don't want them looking at you like that." He said.

"O-Oh."

"Just wait until you're together with Zoe to meet my parents, you'll get a better first impression." Connor said, getting Evan's attention.

"What?"
