the general support method

The general support method is actually something that I discovered when my friend was having a panic attack and needed my help. I just came up with the name because it's literally just general support for the person, so I apologize if this was already a name for something. This method helps with spiraling specifically after a triggering event, this also takes two people. This is particularly good for those who use venting as a coping mechanism. Here are the steps to the general support method:

1. Have a friend or trusted loved one near you and focus on your breathing. Have the person guide you through natural breathing and deep breaths.

2. Vent to the person about what specifically triggered the attack and try and get as much as possible out of your system. This person should just listen, they should not be giving input as that could sometimes induce more spiraling.

3. It's time for the other person to redirect. The other person should redirect the situation. They could ask about your day, the most fun thing you did, the funniest thing that happened, etc. all while continuing breathing deeply.

Why does this work?

Similar to the last method, however still vastly different, this method uses strategies of breathing and redirection to prevent spiraling and a panicked heartbeat. This method calms your breathing, allowing your brain to receive enough oxygen and blood which can clear your head and prevent a black-out. This method also plays toward mindfulness, allowing you to feel your emotions and express them before trying to redirect to prevent spiraling. The redirection right at the end combined with the breathing is really helpful and can allow somebody to calm down and focus their mind on happier subjects or situations.
