"yeah, bella, since when"

•••

The following months after the Cullen's left were hard, especially for Bella. She never talked to Hayley anymore, or any of her friends for that matter. Charlie often called her, asking for advice to help his daughter, but Hayley had nothing to give.

Hayley was also dealing with her own heartbreak, but she was dealing with it differently. Instead of moping around and crying all day, she trained. She grew closer with the wolves and her brother, who came to Forks to visit. Jack's arrival was unexpected, but welcomed in the hard times of Hayley's life.

Ellen did her best to comfort her daughter, but all Hayley insisted on doing was train. It was like she was angry at the world, and all she could do was fight. Ellen and Jack didn't mind training with Hayley, but she often lost control of her anger, which wasn't healthy. Ellen could tell she was just using training to distract herself from the truth.

Growing closer to the wolves was another welcomed thing. Hayley had grown the closest to John Call, as well as Nicole Lahote. With Nicole being the only female wolf, the two girls would often train with each other and hang out, both bonding over their shared love for photography.

It wasn't until February that Bella finally snapped out of her depressed mood. First, it was a movie night with Jessica. From what Hayley had heard, it didn't go well at all and Jessica was never going out with Bella again, but it was something. Next, Hayley got a call. The Swan girl stuttered a lot and made awkward conversation on the phone, trying her best to apologize and convince Hayley to come out with her.

Hayley, of course, agreed to go out with Bella. She had no idea what the Swan girl had planned, and decided not to question it when she saw a giant tarp covering something in the back of the truck.

"How have you been?" Bella asked Hayley, her voice quiet.

"Busy," Hayley answered. "My brother is visiting town, so I've been training a lot with him. I also met some new people, so I've been hanging out with them."

"That's cool," Bella said, nodding her head.

"How have you been?" Hayley asked, deciding the awkward conversation was better than the silence.

Bella adjusted her grip on the wheel as she swallowed thickly. "I miss him," she said.

Hayley sighed and looked out the window. "Me too," she mumbled.

The conversation stopped as the truck in front of a unfamiliar house. Hayley slowly unbuckled her seat belt and got out of the orange vehicle. She was about to ask whose house they were at, but Jacob called out to them as he ran towards the truck, answering her question.

"Where the hell have you been, loca?" Jacob asked as he picked up Bella and spun her around, making Bella laugh.

When Jake put the Swan girl down, she sighed and pointed to her truck. "I, uh, I brought you something," she said.

"Okay," Jacob said, sending a questioning look towards Hayley, who shrugged in response.

"It's a little crazy," Bella told him before pulling off the tarp to reveal two motorcycles .

"Wow," Jacob said. "Scrap metal. You shouldn't have."

"I saved it from the junkyard," Bella told him.

"Did you really though?" Hayley asked as she looked at the bikes.

Bella cleared her throat, "I think they'll probably cost more to fix than they're worth, but then I thought that if I had a mechanic friend to help me out.." She trailed off.

"Ah! Me being the mechanic-type friend?" Jake asked,

"That's right," Bella said, nodding her head.

"Since when are you into motorcycles?" Jake asked.

"Yeah, Bella, since when?" Hayley pressed.

"Since now," Bella answered quickly.

"Right.." Hayley said slowly, sharing a look with Jake.

"I get it if you think that this is really stupid and reckless," Bella said.

"Yeah, I mean, it's completely stupid and reckless," Jacob said, pausing. "When do we start?"

Bella seemed surprised by his response. "Um. Now," she said, the two laughing. "Please?"

Hayley sighed when Jake agreed. She didn't know why Bella was suddenly into motorcycles, but she knew that it wasn't good. Jake removed the tarp completely and went to grab one of the bikes, Hayley moving to grab the other.

"Oh, hey, be careful," Bella warned. "Those things are actually really heavy, so.." She trailed off when Jake picked up the bike with ease. "Jake, you're, like, buff. How did that happen? You're, like, 16. I don't get it."

"Mmm-hmm," Jacob hummed. "Age is just a number, baby. What are you, like, 40 now?"

Jake turned to grab the other bike out of the truck, frowning when he watched Hayley pick it up with ease and set it on the ground.

"It feels like that sometimes," Bella said, pulling Jake's attention away from the dhampir.

Hayley sat on the ground of the barn, her camera in hand as she listened to the romantic song play on the radio. Jacob sat on the ground next to one of the bikes, humming along to the song while tightening bolts. Bella got up and turned off the radio, making both of them look at her.

"That song's good," Jake told her. "You don't like it?"

"Um, I don't really like music anymore, kind of," Bella answered, making Hayley frown.

"Okay. No more music," Jake said.

"So I was thinking, if we're gonna do this every day, and hopefully we will, we have to, like, fit homework in there somewhere," Bella said. "I don't want Billy thinking that I'm a bad influence on you."

Jacob stopped working. "You? Influence me?" He questioned before scoffing. "Please."

"Are you.. I'm older than you, so that makes me the influencer and you the influencee," Bella explained.

"What does that make me?" Hayley questioned.

"Also an influencee, since I'm also older than you," Bella answered.

Jake laughed. "No, no, no. My size and knowledge base actually makes me older than you because of your general paleness and lack of know-how," he said, going back to working.

"Ooh, nice one," Hayley said with a smile.

"I convinced you to build two-wheeled death machines with me," Bella pointed out. "Don't you think that makes you kind of young and naive?"

Jake stopped working and faced Bella, again. "Okay. So where do we stand?" He asked.

"I'm 35," Bella stated. "And you might be, like, 32. Hayley, you're probably 33."

"What?!" Hayley exclaimed with a laugh.

"Come on," Jake said, rolling his eyes.

A knock on the door interrupted the conversation. "Yo, Jake, you in there?" A male voice asked.

Bella went to grab her stuff before Jacob stopped her. "It's okay. It's just my boys," he explained.

"Hey, Jake," One of the boys greeted.

"Hey. Guys, this is Bella and that's Hayley," Jake introduced. "This is Quil and Embry."

Hayley knew Embry from hanging out with his older brother, John. The two weren't really close, and barley spoke to each other, but they still knew one another. Hayley offered a small wave to the Call boy, which he returned.

"Thought you'd be out sucking face with my brother," Embry joked.

Hayley rolled her eyes. "You know that we're only friends," she told him.

"I'm Quil Ateara," Quil flirted, and Bella gave him an awkward smile. "So the bike building story is true."

"Oh, yeah, yeah, I taught him everything he knows," Bella joked.

"What about the part were you're his girlfriend?" Embry asked, a sly smile on his face.

"Uh, we're friends, you know," Bella said.

Embry laughed. "Burn," he said.

"Actually, remember I said she's a girl and a friend," Jake lied.

"Embry, do you remember him making that distinction?" Quil asked.

"Nope," Embry said, shaking his head.

"So you guys have girlfriends? That's awesome," Bella said, defending Jake.

"Nice one," Hayley whispered to her protected.

"Yeah, right," Jake laughed. "Quil's actually taking his cousin to prom."

"Yeah, that's still a riot," Quil said, rolling his eyes. "You want funny, Black? I'll give you funny."

Quil charged at the boy, and the two began to play fight. Hayley snapped a few pictures of the action with her camera as Embry walked over to stand next to them.

"Hey, that hold's illegal!" Jake yelled.

"I got five bucks on Quil," Embry said.

"You're on," Bella challenged.
