Chapter 32: Bolson and Zelda's Chat

Zelda sighed as she leaned over her wooden desk under the stairs. Maps of Vah Ruta that Zelda had drawn herself were sprawled everywhere as books she had scavenged from the castle weeks prior had been open around her. The original legends of Calamity Ganon, the History of Ten Thousand Years ago, notes the Sheikah Researchers had taken a hundred years ago, and the notes she had taken during their escapade into the Beast only a few days ago.

Nothing.

Nothing in the books had anything passed Sealing the Calamity with her Sealing Powers and the Sword that Sealed the Darkness. Nothing in the Beast schematics had anything to do with Ancient Sheikah Monks controlling the Beast by will. Nothing had anything she needed. Zelda groaned as she leaned back in her chair, doing her best to rub the tired out of her eyes. She really did have a habit of stressing herself out, didn't she?

Zelda dropped her arms before blinking a few times, staring back down at the desk. She smiled, her eyes locking onto the woodwork of favorable area. She remembered the day Link had showed surprised her with it after climbing practice. Sometimes... This felt like the safest place for her when alone. A place built specifically for her and her interest by the one closest to her. Really though, it was only when she was alone.

When she was with Link, anywhere was the safest place.

Zelda pushed her chair back, standing and choosing to stretch. She ended up filling the shelves around the desk with books and maps they had gathered from the Castle, claiming they would be of use later on. In fact, she had come back to their home in Hateno to read those very same books, insisting that they may be a bit useful to their efforts. They hadn't, but it was worth a try.

Zelda walked away, grabbing the Sheikah Slate she had used to teleport here from the Domain with, and headed towards the cabins entrance. Link must be waiting for her to return to the Domain. She had told him she wouldn't be gone long, having left early that morning. She opened the door, the blazing sunlight blinding her as she rose her arm to shield her eyes. She brought the Sheikah Slate up, looking at the time on the screen. 3 P.M...

"Hiiiiii," A lofty voice said a small distance away from her. Zelda jumped, surprised by the sudden disturbance of the silence around her, turning to see Bolson yet again sitting under the tree.

"Why if it isn't Marin! It's wonderful to see you again," Bolson continued, giving the blonde girl a small wave. Zelda looked confused for a second. Who was Marin?

Suddenly the realization hit her almost as hard as the Lynel did. That was the name she used before they reached Zora's Domain. The Zora remembered her from a hundred years ago, they didn't need a cover up name over there.

"H-Hello Bolson, it's good to see you. Enjoying the view under the tree yet again I presume?" Zelda asked, recollecting herself.

"You know me well. I believe I remember having a similar conversation with that dashing swordsman of yours. Where is he anyway?" Bolson asked, looking around just a bit.

"Back at Zora's Domain at the moment. You know how we like to travel," Zelda said with a smile.

"So... He's not here?" Bolson asked. Zelda, with a bit of a confused look, shook her head. Bolson smiled.

"Wonderful. Come here, hun. Sit right here," Bolson said, patting the grass patch next to him. Zelda blinked a few times before slowly making her way over to the eccentric man. She sat gently before Bolson turned towards Karson, relaxing behind them.

"Karson dear! Go clean the shudders off the display houses across the bridge!" Bolson called out. Karson, seemingly out of instinct, jumped to his feet. He started making his way towards the bridge before stopping short of it.

"Uh, boss? I thought you retired... Why are you thinking about the houses?" Karson asked suspiciously. Bolson waved him away.

"Just because I don't build anymore houses doesn't mean I shouldn't keep up with the beauties I have already designed! Now shoo!" Bolson said. Karson shrugged, running across the bridge. Bolson turned his attention back to the girl next to him.

"So honey. You and Link. What's going on there?" Bolson asked. Zelda's cheeks immediately flared.

"W-W-What? What do you mean by that?" Zelda stuttered out. However Bolson brought a finger to her lips.

"Ah ah ah! I see the way you look at him. Link hides it a bit better, but you Darling? You're an open book," Bolson said, lowering his finger. "You like him don't you?"

Zelda stared up at Bolson before bringing her knees to her chin, wrapping her arms around her now tight legs.

"It's... Well... Its complicated," Zelda said quietly. Bolson put a hand on Zelda's shoulder.

"Talk to me hun. This isn't my first horseback ride down the path of love. What's got you feeling so uneasy?" Bolson asked gently. Zelda glanced up at him again before burying her chin in her knees yet again

"Link... Link has amnesia. He remembers a lot of things but... Ultimately he isn't the same person as before. He isn't the person I fell in love with..." Zelda said. Bolson raised an eyebrow.

"And yet...? I know there's more than that hun," Bolson said.

"And yet... It feels like I'm falling in love all over again with this new Link." Zelda finished, now looking out towards the green fields of and mountains in the distance passed the bridge. Bolson thought about what Zelda had said for a moment, a humming a few tunes as he thought.

"How different is this Link from the previous Link?" Bolson asked. Zelda shrugged.

"He's more... open. Playful. Sweet when he wants to be. Yet he still has that knightly side to him..." Zelda said quietly. "You should have seen what he did at the Domain yesterday, carrying me in his arms in front of all the Zora..."

Bolson grinned, hearing Zelda's out loud thoughts.

"Sounds like he really hasn't changed that much. It sounds like he only got comfortable around you. That's a good thing isn't it?" Bolson asked. "Or would you prefer he went back to his old ways?"

Zelda's eyes grew wide as she lifted her head to quickly look at Bolson.

"Never! I love that Link is more comfortable around me!" Zelda said honestly. The Link of the past had opened up to her slightly, but this Link now... He felt much more.... Real.

"Then you are a hypocrite, and are continuously lying to yourself." Bolson said, almost in a singing voice. Zelda blinked a few times, taken aback by what the retired carpenter had just said. A hypocrite? Her?

"Excuse me... But how am I a hypocrite?" Zelda asked, trying not to allow her annoyance to slip through her tone. Bolson, however only continued to hum, seemingly enjoying her frustration.

"You said the issue of your feelings were complicated because it felt like you were falling in love with another version of Link. However from what I've gathered he's almost the same, if not better than before. And after what you just said, you seem to be rather enjoying it. No, it sounds like the Amnesia is just an excuse. What's the real issue, hmmmmmm?"

Zelda remained silent, choosing to return back towards staring out into the mountains. Bolsons grin grew a bit larger.

"The issue isn't with Link is it? Its with you, isn't it honey?" He asked. Zelda sank deeper into her knees, her face buried in her thighs. The same thoughts she had in the river that day started to return to her. Why would Link like a failure such as herself?

Bolson sighed as he stood, dusting himself off.

"Look dear," He said in considerable the most serious tone he had ever had. "I don't know why you feel as if you're an issue, or why you wouldn't deserve Link. But if you feel you don't deserve him, than you'll act like you don't deserve him. I've watched as Link put you through those exercises. Even through those trainings you had nothing but love in your eyes. And yet you never made any attempt from what I saw to act."

"I have acted!" Zelda said with a muffled tone through her thighs. "He's dense... I've told him he can act friendlier with me..."

"So you've done nothing but push all the responsibility on him to act in order to save you hardship." Bolson said. Zelda lungs filled with air, her chest expanding. Is that really what she was doing?

"No boy is going to hear that and think they can make a move on a girl, at least not gentlemen. And especially a gentlemen as dense as Link." Bolson said. "You need to take more initiative, Love! You need to show you like him!"

"Bolson I'm the failure of my own family!" Zelda said suddenly, her head shooting up to look at the older eccentric man. "Why would Link ever love me like that? Why should I drag him down? I want to put effort in... I want him to like me back... But why do that to him?"

"If that's what you think you're doing than you really shouldn't be with him." Bolson said, almost scolding the girl. "You're much worse off than I thought! You must not have been in this type of romantic situation before. It almost hurts listening to you. If that boy thought that low of you, then why are you living in his house? Why are you traveling with him? Why did he take the time to teach you? He stayed through all of that and I'm sure you've had a history before then. If he thought any of that then he wouldn't even be here!"

Zelda couldn't respond. She returned to staring in the darkness of her thighs. Bolson wasn't necessarily wrong... No, he simply just didn't understand her. Yes that was it... Right?

Bolson sighed. He wasn't truly upset with the girl. Not at all. But boy, she needed a much larger push than he had originally anticipated. What has this girl gone through to think so lowly of herself? She was just a teenager. Maybe it just wasn't her time yet.

"I'm sorry. Maybe it's just a bit to early for you. I'll leave you be." Bolson said, turning to leave. However he stopped as soon as he heard the tiny voice behind him.

"What... What do I do to make Link notice my feelings...?" Zelda said quietly and muffled, refusing to look up from her position. Bolson turned, a sweet smile on his face.

"Act," Bolson said. "Even if its at your own pace. You need not rush. It doesn't need to be a large act. But you have to start somewhere. Don't you think? I think it would make your parents proud."

Zelda silently nodded as Bolson turned to cross the bridge. Maybe... maybe Bolson was right. Maybe she was just sitting in self pity. Maybe... Maybe she should try acting on her feelings just a bit. But what counted as acting on her feelings? She had never done anything of the sort before... Make her parents proud? She couldn't even remember the last time her father had been proud of her. And her mother...

Zelda sighed as she took the Sheikah Slate off her belt. 3:30... She sighed yet again as she stood. She really shouldn't keep Link waiting any longer. How was she supposed to face him now though...? Zelda groaned as she tapped the Shrine in the center of Zora's Domain, feeling much more lost than before.
