Chapter 6

Taking a deep breath of the filtered air within her helmet, Idranya readied herself for what was to come as her hand tightened around the hilt of her sword and the diminutive Griibrs surrounded her. Determination filled the young Oathsworn who truly wished not to displease her master which struck a chord within Naranthir for he could sense that despite his only partial mental  domination, her desire was indeed genuine.

Not far away from the recruit, the Lord-Archon had telepathically linked his mind to her own and had he the will to do so, he could assume direct control of her body as if it were an extension of his own body but for now, he was content to merely remain as an observer and witness events through her senses. The Oathsworn was aware that she was surrounded and outnumbered by the vermin but she was not worried for she reached out to them with her mind and she could sense their crude thoughts.

One of the Griibrs behind her immediately lunged forward with a curved short blade clenched in its hands. Attacking with the desperation of a cornered animal, the creature was rewarded with a booted heel to the face as the Oathsworn had known of its intent before it struck and she spun about to intercept it.

Her kick was delivered with such force that it snapped the fragile neck of the creature and the Oathsworn did not give its fellows time to recover as she already went on the attack. Her sword of which was wreathed in a crimson light, cleanly sliced through the top of the skull another next to the one she kicked and into its brain of which was cleaved in twain and the creature collapsed with its green blood spilling upon the floor

The other Griibrs immediately attacked in unison which the Oathsworn had anticipated and she wreathed herself in an invisible telekinetic barrier which their weapons harmlessly struck against as if it were a solid surface. In response, she detonated the shield which sent a shockwave a short distance around her which of course did not reach the watching audience while her attackers were painfully knocked down to the floor.

In the next moment, she was upon one of the prone creatures which had been dazed by the telekinetic blast and she ended its life by impaling her sword upon its gut before quickly retracting it. Moving on to another of the things, she kicked one in the face as it got up, knocking its head down upon the floor with a crack that did not kill it yet and she quickly stomped down on its neck which proved to be the death blow.

And so the bloody performance went, the Lord-Archon's newest guardian easily butchered the vermin with a mixture of fine swordsmanship or through a deliberately showy use of the power which the Alfarin knew as Weaving, to harness the power within some species and transform one's own mind into a weapon onto itself. A chorus of mirthful laughter broke out among the lords and ladies of the Gloaming Court as one Griibr was incinerated by a bolt of lightning from the Oathsworn and sent flying into another of its fellows.

At least two of the creatures attempted to flee, one almost made it to the watching crowd around them but an Alfarin courtier reached out with his mind and the Griibr was telekinetically lifted it up into the air before the other members of the Gloaming Court used their minds to tear off its limbs as easily as one would rip out the legs of a cooked Charikk Beetle. Torrents of green blood gushed out from the fresh wounds as the creature screamed in pain while cruel laughter emanated from the Court, even the Lord-Archon smirked in amusement as its body was slowly crushed as if by a great hand and its eyes popped out of its sockets, the mangled body was then gently laid down upon the floor as if a child were putting down a toy they would play with later.

The other runner was killed in a less showy manner by one of the other Oathsworn guards who merely drew a holstered disintegrator pistol and shot the creature in the gut with a bright cyan energy bolt. The Griibr collapsed with a pained screech as its flesh was slowly reduced to smoking dust which, it tried to scream but its lungs had been atomized and after a few seconds, there was nothing left of it but a pile of ash.

The slaughter lasted for about a minute and a half more where as much at it amused the Lord-Archon to witness this whimsical diversion, he knew deep within that it was just a temporary distraction and nothing more. The Gloaming Court soon gave a polite round of applause to their Monarch's young guardian as alien slaves came by to drag away the Griibr corpses which would be fed to those among them with primarily carnivorous diets.

Simply giving his own quiet words of praise to the Oathsworn recruit for providing them with some amusement, she was dismissed back to their barracks to recuperate while other forms of entertainment were prepared for The Gloaming Court of which would then be followed by matters of business regarding their domain. Adulation was also of course afforded to Lady Zhelanria for providing the Griibr captives; the Hierarch of course was pleased and had humbly spoken about how she lived to serve the will of the Lord-Archon.

A band of alien musicians from one of their vassal worlds were ushered onto the bloodstained floor where they carried with them the instruments of their performance. The Lord-Archon could sense their anxiety and fear for failure to please The Gloaming Court would result in slavery yet if they could satisfy the gathered Alfarin nobles then they would be rewarded with riches beyond their wildest dreams.

Soon that familiar languor would return to Naranthir who softly sighed before once more resuming that well practiced demeanor of aloof indifference which was expected of his position. It was going to be a long night, he thought.
