Ch 23

"He's all over the globe. Robotics labs, weapons facilities, jet propulsion labs, reports of a metal man, or men, coming in and emptying the place." Maria informs us.

"Fatalities?" Steve asks.

"Only when engaged. Mostly guys left in a fugue state going in about old memories, worst fears, and something too fast to see." She says.

"Maximoffs. Well, that makes sense he'd go to them, they have someone in common." Steve sighs crossing his arms over his chest.

"Not anymore." She tells him handing him a tablet.

"Who are these Maximoffs you guys are talking about?" I ask confused.

"They're twins. He's fast, she's weird." Hill explains.

I look over Steve's shoulder to see Strucker's dead body.

"Barton, we might have something." I say turning to the archer.

"Gotta go." He says hanging up his phone.

"Who was that?" Steve asks him.

"Girlfriend." He responds.

Steve gathers the rest of the team and shows them the picture.

"What's this?" Tony asks.

"A message. Ultron killed Strucker." Steve says.

"And he did a Banksy at the crime scene, just for us." He retorts.

"This is a smokescreen. Why send a message when you've just give a speech?" Natasha asks to no one in particular.

"Strucker knew something that Ultron wanted us to miss." Steve says.

"Yeah, I bet he...Yep. Everything we had on Strucker has been erased." Natasha sighs as she looks at a computer screen.

"Not everything." Tony says.

We're in a different room looking through boxes of old folders and files.

"Hey Sarge, did you know that in these files your name's Josep-

"Josephine. Yeah." I sigh cutting Stark off looking through other files.

"Is that your real name?-

"No and yes. On my birth certificate it's Joseph since my folks thought I was a boy but as I got older and hit puberty and I was more female my parents surprised me in changing my name to Josephine. It wasn't because they didn't like who I was or in shame. They thought they were doing me a favor. So when I enlist in the army it was under Joseph because of my birth certificate then Josephine 'cause of my ID but people call me J.D.- it's a whole mix up at first." I chuckle not looking up even though I can feel everyone's eyes on me, especially Natasha's.

"So your parents took this condition fairly well then." Thor says.

"...Yeah. They never treated me any differently. Received some tough love from my dad sometimes but I guess everyone goes through that." I sigh.

"I never got a chance to tell them how much they meant to me before I became a, in Stark's words Sargcicle." I add softly.

"I lost my parents in a car accident. My dad and I didn't have the best relationship but it still hurt. And my mom....I never got to tell them how much I loved them." Tony brings up and my conscious in the back of my mind was eating at me but I don't say anything feeling sadness for him as well.

"Huh, I guess we had more in common than we realized." He says turning to me.

"Yeah, except I lived through the Great Depression." I say.

"Depression? Your family was pretty well off. I don't think you suffered that bad." He chuckles and I look down.

"By the way I don't know how you guys found out about my condition but I'm glad you guys haven't laughed in my face yet." I smile looking at everyone.

"Drunk Tony might've let it slip." Barton says.

"Sorry." Tony mumbles and I shrug.

"Drunk Tony seems to be speaking a lot of truth lately." I say and Steve clears his throat.

He then brings over the file he had in his possession.

"Known associates. Well, Strucker had a lot of friends." He says.

"Well these people are all horrible." Banner says looking at the file and Tony does as well.

"Wait, I know that guy." He says and Banner passes him the photo he was looking at.

"From back in the day. He operates off the African coast, black market arms." He mentions.

Steve gives him an accusing look.

"There are conventions, alright? You meet people, I didn't sell him anything. He was talking about finding something new, a game changer, it was all very "Ahab." He adds as he shows us the picture of a man named Ulysses Klaue.

I furrow my eyebrows as I look at the picture then speak.

"This." I point to the scar on the back of his neck.

"Uh, it's a tattoo. I don't think he had it-

"No, those are tattoos, this is a brand." I tell him.

Banner then goes over to the computer and identifies the brand.

"Oh, yeah. It's a word in an African dialect meaning thief, in a much less friendly way." He says furrowing his eyebrows.

"What dialect?" Steve asks.

"Wakanada..? Wa..Wa..Wakanda." He says and my eyes widen as Steve and I look at each other before we look over at Tony.

"If this guy got out of Wakanda with some of their trade goods-

"I thought your father said he got the last of it?" Steve asks him.

"I don't follow. What comes out of Wakanda?" Banner asks confused.

Tony then looks over to Steve and I shields that are side by side against the wall.

"The strongest metal on earth." He says.

"Where is this guy now?" Steve asks him.

African Coast

"Don't compare me with Stark! He's a sickness!" We hear Ultron exclaim.

"Ahh Junior." Stark says as Thor, Steve and I walk behind him.

"You're gonna break your old man's heart." He adds.

"If I have to." Ultron responds.

"We don't have to break anything." Thor says.

"Clearly you've never made an omelette." Ultron retorts.

"He beat me by one second." Tony says.

"Ah, this is funny, Mr.Stark. It's what, comfortable? Like old times?" Male Maximoff speaks.

"This was never my life." He replies.

"You two can still walk away from this." Steve tells the twins.

"Oh, we will." The girl says.

"I know you've suffered-

"Uuughhh! Captain America. God's righteous man, pretending you could live without war. I can't physically throw up in my mouth, but..." Ultron cuts off Steve with distaste.

"If you believe in peace then let us keep it." I speak up.

"I think you're confusing peace with quiet. Like yourself Sergeant, you think staying quiet you can hide what you really are?...A cold blooded monster-

"Yuh-huh. What's the Vibranium for?" Tony cuts him off as my jaw clenches and grip my shield hard.

"I'm glad you asked that, because I wanted to take this time to explain my evil plan!"

We're suddenly attacked by his robot minions. Natasha and Barton then join the fight and we're all spread out. A robot rams me hard into a different abandoned part of the building. I groan standing up and I see the girl and I bring my shield up standing straight.

"Give me your best shot." I say waiting for her first strike.

"Gladly, Soldier." She smirks and I see her eyes glow red.

"Alright." I say going to approach her.

J.D. drops her shield and drops down to her knees.

I find myself standing on a sidewalk in front of a nice house with a white picket fence. I look around confused then down to see that I'm wearing my old uniform. The front door opens and two kids run out. The older child being a girl around 6 and younger child being a boy around 4.

"Momma!" The girl says running to me and I catch her lifting her up as if in instinct along with the boy.

"H-hey." I smile looking between them.

"Mommy's been wondering when you'd come back." She says and my eyebrows furrow.

"Emma." I mumble setting the two children down gently before running into the house.

"Emma? Emma?!" I call out then make it into the kitchen and my breath hitches in my throat.

"Em-Emma." I say breathless as I see the woman before me making her turn to me.

"Joe." Her eyes gloss over as she comes over to me embracing me tightly.

"I missed you so much." She says.

"I missed you too an- and the kids." I say with a chuckle.

"You've been gone for so long." She tells me.

"I know but I'm here now." I assure her.

She gives me a guilty look.

"Joe, I've moved on." She says and my heart drops.

"Wha-

"Honey I'm home!" I hear a male voice say making me go towards where I hear it, leading me to the front door.

I see it's Daniel Granger, a fellow soldier from the army. I then turn back to see Emma walking past me and up to Granger.

"But I thought-

"I deserve better Joe. He gives me what you can't. A normal life." Emma tells me makes my eyes gloss over.

"B-But the kids.." I say turning to see the two kids from before looking at me with blank faces.

"Kids?" I ask going to take a step towards them but they take a step back.

"Emma-

I take a step forward to her but I'm suddenly somewhere else. The Avengers Tower. I look around to see it empty but hear muffled voices. I follow them and near a balcony where see Natasha and Bruce. Natasha wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him. She backs away and turns to me.

"Sorry J.D. I deserve better. He's smart, not just a meathead soldier." She says making my heart break.

"But, I thought-

"What? That I liked you? You were a good distraction but I don't have a future with you." She says leaning into Bruce's chest.

I close my eyes feeling tears stream down my face.

When I open my eyes I found myself in the middle of a highway. Steve's next to me and we're standing in front of the unmasked Winter Soldier.

"B-Bucky?" I ask.

"Who the hell is Bucky?" He responds and brings out his gun.

BANG!

He shoots Steve and he flops down, dead. Eyes open staring at me.

"Steve!" I cry out then get tackled to the ground.

Bucky is on top of me chocking me with one hand and has a pistol in the other pressing it against my forehead.

"I'm like this because of you." He says staring coldly in my eyes.

BANG!

I gasp as I feel like all the air was knocked out of my body. Tears down my face. I look around to see where I am. I slowly get up wiping my face and make my way out the building.

"Sarge!" I hear Barton call making me turn to his direction.

"We've been looking for you. You okay?" He asks walking towards me.

I nod wordlessly swallowing hard walking to the Quinjet.

"J-

I ignore everyone whose looking at me tossing my shield aside and take a seat. I bring my iPod out and plug my earbuds in my ears then tune out as I put my face in my hands.
