Chapter Thirteen - Witch Tradition

Lucresia

I gripped Nick's hand tightly as we waited for Father Blackwood to enter the Church of Night. We were all waiting for the barbaric tradition to take place. I was extremely anxious for everything, I can't believe that tonight Prudence would be eaten. Prudence was already sitting on the throne of skulls, looking at her I felt light-headed. I just wanted to go home. Suddenly Father Blackwood came out as I shifted with anxiety.

"Brethren, sisters, a very unholy night to you all." Father Blackwood said as everyone responded, except me. I just wanted out of here. Nick got close to my ear and whispered, "It's okay Lu."

"Each year, the Feast of Feasts commemorates the selfless sacrifice that saved our coven." Father Blackwood continued being interrupted by the whole coven.

"Praise Freya! Praise Freya! Praise Freya!" The witches and warlocks chanted as I simply looked at Nick in plain disgust. How can everyone be alright with this?

"However tonight, I must be the reluctant bearer of dark tidings. In an unexpected turn of events, through circumstances entirely out of our control Prudence Night cannot fulfill her duty as Queen of the Feast." I sighed in relief and looked over to Nick who looked very confused. The rest of the coven was furious.

"Blasphemy! We're ravenous. We must feast!" The lady behind me chanted as I looked at my mother who had a look of indignation on her face. I felt the exact same way that she did. My dad had a very serious look on his face.

"Moreover! Moreover! The Dark Lord has revealed to me that this year there shall not b-" Father Blackwood was interrupted by a lady with curly hair walking to the front.

"Freya lives! Praise Satan!" She exclaimed taking a knife to her throat and slitting it in one swift motion. I instantly buried my face in Nick's shoulder as he hugged me tightly trying to comfort me. People started digging into the girl on the floor, I literally could not look.

"Let's just go. I can not stand this awful scene. " My dad stated as ny mom nodded. They quietly made their way to the doors. Nick and me following behind them, everyone was so busy and crazy that they did not notice us slipping out.

Once outside I looked over at my parents who looked furious. "I can't understand this, we have to talk to the Dark Lord... How is cannibalism okay?" My mom ranted as my father just nodded.

"Let's just go home." My dad said as he took my mom's hand and teleported them home. I looked at Nick who had an upset look on his face. I felt traumatized, in my 16 years worshipping the Dark Lord I had never encountered something so gruesome and unspeakable.

"Want to go home?" He asked me as I shook my head. "Not really." I said as he nodded and took my hand.

"Let's go to Cerberus'." I said as he nodded lightly. I knew he didn't stand being around so much mortals but Nick still agreed. He agreed to everything for me,  earlier today we celebrated thanksgiving with my sister and not once did he complain.

We walked all the way into town, not even bothering using our magic. We didn't once talk, I guess we were both stunned by today's events, or at least I was. Soon enough we reached the small cafe and made our way inside. I sat down on a booth as Nick went to get us some coffee.

"Hey, you're Kennedy's sister right?" I looked up to see Harvey, the curly haired girl, and the short haired girl. I smiled at the group, not finding a reason to be rude to the bunch.

"Yeah I am. Lucresia Good; a pleasure to meet you." I said while looking at Nick who was still leaning on the counter waiting for our order.

"Nice to meet you too! I'm Roz, this is Susie and that is Harvey." The girl; Roz said nicely pointing at each of them as they smiled and waved my way. I smiled at the group warmly.

"So how come we haven't seen you around school? When Kennedy talked about you we thought you would be younger and not our age." Harvey said as my heart pounded strongly, no one has ever asked me this. I've never talked to any mortal besides my sister.

"I'm homeschooled. All my life I have been homeschooled so I figured why change now?" I said forcing out a small chuckle. I saw Nick coming over and lightened up a bit because he would probably save me from the awkward situation. Just as Harvey was going to open his mouth again Nick cut him short.

"You ready to go, Lu?" He asked me, smirking at the group and handing me my cup of coffee. I smiled and nodded standing up from the booth. "Well you guys, nice to meet you!" I exclaimed as they smiled and said the same. Once we left the shop Nick turned to me.

"What did they want?" He asked me as I shrugged.

"I honestly don't know..." I said as Nick looked rather mad.

"We should probably stop coming over here, the safest places for us witches and warlocks are the academy and the church." He said as I nodded slowly. We started walking towards the woods holding hands.

"Well yeah, you're right. It's just that sometimes I'm kind of jealous of mortals." I said as Nick frowned in confusion. I sighed and looked back to the little shop fading in the distance.

"Why is that?" Nick asked as I shrugged and groaned. "They just have so much freedom, they can do what the want. They have nothing to hide, nothing at all. And I'm not being ungrateful to Satan at all but we basically live for him." I ranted as Nick chuckled.

"I used to envy mortals. They invest themselves in their relationships and give their all to their partners and I used to be so jealous watching them from afar. But then I met you and I understood that I would trade it all for you." Nick said as literally my heart set in flames.

"I know that Satan is a jealous god but I swear not even the god below us can separate the two of us." Nick chuckled as I tackled him in a bear god and laughed. "Stop it Nick! I have butterflies in my stomach." I chuckled as he shrugged and pecked my lips.

"We should probably head over to your house since tomorrow we have to go back to the academy." Nick said as I nodded in agreement. We walked hand in hand the whole way home, basking in each other's presence.

-

The next morning I woke up very early, getting dressed and knocking on Nick's door. We went down to the kitchen and had breakfast, soon after that we left my house and headed over to the Academy to continue our classes like always.

When we got to the academy, we were just going to head over to our separate dorms when Dorcas and Agatha skipped happily over to us. "Did you hear?" They said in unison as I frowned.

"What do you mean?" I asked the sister as Nick shifted his position and rolled his eyes at the girls. He is such an eye roller.

"The Kinkle mines collapsed, too bad for the witch hunters." Agatha said and laughed, they skipped away laughing. I frowned and looked over at Nick who had a dull expression on his face. "That's awful." I said as Nick shrugged.

"It's a natural event, Lu. There's nothing we can do." Nick as I suddenly remembered my sister and how devastated she would be for Harvey. My stomach churned in worry for my mortal sister and her mortal friends. I shouldn't care but I could not help putting myself in their position.

"I know." I whispered as we headed over to our individual dorms. As I entered my dorm I just couldn't help thinking about the mortals and how awful it must be. I kept thinking about if anyone got hurt.

"Hey Lucresia!" I was startled by Vera coming out of the bathroom and plopping herself on my bed. I smiled at her as she watched me unpack. "Hey Vera." I said weakly as she frowned and sat up.

"What's wrong?" She asked nicely as I sat down and shrugged my shoulders. Vera being nice to me was somehow comforting, I've always wanted a girl friend that was not ny sister.

"Remember what you said at the party the other day?" I asked her as she looked ahead and then turned toward me and nodded. "Of course, and I meant it you know." She said as I smiled warmly.

"Why? Is something wrong with Nick?" She asked confused as I shook my head rapidly and she chuckled.

"No! It's just that it would be refreshing to have more friends here that's all." I said as she nodded and smiled.

"You probably thought I was being a freak when you got here and I told you that Nick was bad news, but I honestly was just trying to look out for you. Nick was an asshole before you got here but I really believe you changed him." She said as I smiled and blushed.

"Thank you... I did think it was weird but I get where you were coming from definitely." I said smiling. Suddenly I forgot about the mortals and just talked with Vera. Having a witch friend and a warlock boyfriend would definitely separate me from my sister's world and it is just what I needed.
