albatross

i glimpsed a bird in your throat     the wink of an albatross that i would prefer to meet

please tell me its painful name     that bird is in your eyes and it flies south i swear

as you try to speak through rib-less wings     your grin stretched by the span of the tips

a grimace torn     horned bones crimson brittle barbed through your lips     i'll untie

her from your neck now     send frozen breath to gnaw the pain     but tell me -     that

bird -     i need to know her name     i have at last grasped the dance we will not need

for that i am not sad     i have brushed up on my albatross     heed this     i want to

know the name     shall i set her free or shall i feast     your courage is mine it soars in

me     it makes me fly so let the big wings go for now until they need to rest and i

a perch will whisper when the carnage is over     when grace arrives     but now i feed

her the spikes from your lips and your tongue from where their blood is wrung

when an albatross first returns to the colony it will dance with many partners, but after a number of years the number of birds an individual will interact with drops, until one partner is chosen and a pair is formed. they then continue to perfect an individual language that will eventually be unique to them only. having established a pair bond that will last for life, however, most of that dance will never be used again. how sad it that?
